SKI TOURING COMMENTS

On January 7 the WMC held its annual Avalanche class. Over 75 people came for the morning class with around 45 showing up for the outdoor end of it. If there are any conclusions to be gathered from the class they are: it took 27 minutes to find the buried dummy with probe poles where it took only 3-4 minutes to find the pieps. After the burial of 30 minutes the chances of digging out a living person are less than one in ten. The figures speak for themselves. Always equip yourself with the gear that is needed for the trip that you are on. Thanks to Norm Fish, Walt Hass and all the others who helped out.

Probe poles and rescue sled are at Steve Summers, 484-9022.

If you have enough people with pieps on your tour it is a good idea to run a pieps drill, it does not take long and goes a long way in showing people how to work them.

Thanks to all the people who have helped with the tours and the class. Its those folks who make the program work.

Any questions about the skiing or trips, call Steve Summers, 484-9022.

ATIENTION ALL MEMBERS IN ZIP CODES 84107 (MURRAY), 84117 (HOLLADAY), 84403 (OGDEN), 84057 (OREM)

The Postal Service is changing Zip Codes for portions of the above areas. If you are affected, it is unnecessary to send us a regular change-of-address notice. You may instead use the membership renewal form which will be mailed about February 15.

Your mailing stencil will be changed in May or June.

It will be the sole responsibility of the member to notify us of the change. No one connected with the Rambler mailing will do it for you. Mail will be delivered to the old Zip until November 1, 1984. The boundaries listed below may be approximate. Check with your mail carrier if in doubt.

84107: West of I-15 to Redwood Road and from about 3900 South to the southern boundary of old 84107 is changed to 84123.

84117: From 3900 South to 4500 South and from 900 East to the base of the mountains, AND all old 84117 east of and including Wasatch Blvd. from 3900 South to 5600 South is changed to 84124.

84403: West of Washington Blvd. south and west of US 89 is changed to 84405.

84057: South of Center Street is changed to 84058.

Additional Note from the Mail Room

Most mailing stencils have a date in the upper-right hand corner. Every year at dues renewal time, several people comment about it, believing it does not reflect what they think it should mean. The date on the stencil is the date of the stencil, nothing more. It is there because we have members who move once a month and the address changes are return,ed to us juxtapositioned in time. The date helps us keep order. If you have not moved since you first joined, the date is only coincidentally the date you also joined. In some cases, the wrong date or garbage is typed instead but since it is not worth redoing the stencil, it remains as is. Don't panic.

A lilSTORICAL NOTE

Old-timers relate that the Mountain Club had over 1000 members during the Thirties when a membership drive was conducted to raise money for the lodge. _unfortunately there are no records to substantiate this. More recently, some have claimed we had over 1000 members but during this time neither the mailing records or membership lists show over 750, including spouses. If we ever reached 1000 members before there wa~ a tremendous drop in membership because there were only about 600 total. Last year, Just before the calling of dues lapses, we almost made it with about 985 members.

However the January 1984 computer printout listed 1004 members!! which includes 844 regular ;nd life members and 160 spouse members. Counting back in th~ _order_ the applications were typed in, the 1000th member was Rikki Peterson, who qualified with a Thursday Eve hike and a hike to Sunset Peak. Congratulations!

'.fRIP Talk talk talk t~ MOUNTAINEERS GO SOUTH by Jean Binyon

Under the leadership of John Veranth, the Mexican volcano trip drew a total of ten climbers including two from out of state-Dolly Lefevre from Alaska and Canadian John Sloan. Utah residents were John Veranth, George Swanson, Don Thorne, Terry Rollins, Lorri Webb, Diana Schoenberg and Mike and Jean Binyon.

Misfortune haunted our first climb (on Iztacchihuatl) as John V. opted to stay in the Republica de Chile hut overnight rather than return to the Tlamacas hut which was our base for the "Ixta" and "Popo" climbs. John then developed altitude sickness. (Ixta rises to 17,342' and is the 7th highest peak in North America. We took the Las Rodillas route-the "knees"-over the Ayoloco glacier to El Pecho--the "breast" or summit.) George stayed with John overnight and alerted the group the next morning to John's illness. We carried him out on a jerry-rigged stretcher until he regained his mountain legs. John's first climb was his last for this trip. While three of the group returned to Ixta to pick up packs and gear, four others climbed Popocatepetl, the 17,887' peak behind the Tlamacas hut, taking the Ventorillas route up and Las Cruces route on the return.

Terry joined John on the sick list so only 8 of the 10 climbed El Pico de Orizaba, aka Citlaltepetl, at 18,800' the 3rd highest peak in North America. We hired a Tlachachuca driver to take us as far as the Piedra Grandas hut, an international experience all around, then hiked to the summit via the north route over the Glacier de Jamapa. John Sloan planned and directed the climb, appointed rope

4

crews, and generally educated the novices on the finer procedural points.

We returned to Mexico City in our two Hertz cars, now decidedly showing signs of a rough trip, were stopped by the highway patrol (aka highway robbers) for having an obstructed view and "fined" 10,000 pesos on the spot, just 1/2 mile from the Hertz office. (Like the early experience with John's illness, we found hindsight definitely bettP.r than foresight and wished we'd handled the situation more successfully.) Hertz was another costly experience as they charged much more than we expected. The New Year's Eve festivities that evening were underwhelming. All in all, it was not one of our better days.

All but Diana took a Greyline tour on New Year's Day, were awed by the pyramids, pleased with lunch in a cave, and open mouthed at the sights and sounds of one of the world's largest cities. Some of us took in the Museum of Anthropology and other sights in Chapultepec Park; others spent time shopping and strolling. Last impressions: 1) compared to Mexico City, the air at the LA airport was positively clean. Even visibility in fogged-in Salt Lake City was better than in Mexico City. 2) Despite their efforts to create a modern city, we found constant reminders of being in a 3rd World Country --poverty, squatters, street venders and beggers, abandoned construction. 3) The cheapest meals were the best. (Climbers should expect to provide most of their own food.) 4) Losses and delays in getting baggage from the airlines led to resolutions to travel at any other time of year. 5) Many of the group hoped to return to Mexico City and the volcanoes, having learned much and liked much of this trip.

Toll Canyon Ski Tour by Marilyn Earle

As the day dawned, drab and dreary as usual in Salt Lake, with the valley completely shrouded in low-lying clouds, fog, smog, and what-have-you, I was eagerly anticipating a ski tour with Audrey Stevens up Toll Canyon in Timberline. There was no doubt in my mind that the day was dawning clear and sunny in the higher elevations, which has been the case for the last two weeks or so. I felt as if I were really getting away with something; as if I knew of something delightful and delicious that few others knew, as I threw my skis in my car and raced up the canyon. Some people had carpooled from the K-Mart on Parleys Way and I met the group at the Sinclair Station at the Summit.

Let me say that this ski tour was unique from beginning to end. We carpooled to Audrey's house, which can only be reached via 4-wheel drive or on foot. The tour was to leave from the front porch; however, as we entered the side door we were greeted by Audrey's mother, who is a charming woman, and an array of coffee, fresh-baked coffee cake, and other delights on the tour. The snow was interesting, with large ice crystals formed on top and a little crusty in places, due to the sunshine and warm temperatures enjoyed in those areas that are above the low-lying clouds of the valley. The trail wound its way up Toll Canyon to a ridge and we had lunch in a nice sunny spot, soaking up the sun and Audrey's hot spiced wine as we sat there in self-indulgence and total bliss.

Then, after a little more climbing, we started down the other side of the ridge into Lamb's Canyon. There had been snowmobiles on the trail down and it was steep at the top. So, I followed my usual skiing technique of a quick shot down the fall line, totally out of control, followed by an abrupt stop caused by falling down (either voluntarily or otherwise). After the first mile or two, the trail was quite wide and the skiing was very enjoyable

with a gradual downhill slope. I don't believe I've ever been so much in control on a downhill run on cross-country skis! One spot was a little tricky, where the trail suddenly dropped into a streambed without any notice, with just a narrow bridge on which to tippy-toe across. Have you ever seen anyone tippy-toe on skis?

Afterwards, we carpooled back to Audrey's house, where we were greeted with several kinds of wine, cheese and crackers, sweetrolls (all just delightful), and a cozy wood-burning stove. We all settled in, taking off our boots and making ourselves at home as we talked and enjoyed each other's company and the cameraderie. By the time we left, the sun had set and it was dark outside.

A delightful final touch was added by Shelly Hyde as he played a little jazz piano for us. A perfect ending to another fantastic day in the Wasatch (if you are above 6,000 feet). To those of you who weren't there, you missed a good one! My special thanks to Audrey for her generosity in sharing her home and this great tour with us, and to Dave Smith and family for guiding us through these seldom-travelled mountains out of Timberline.

Participants were: Wick and Joanne Miller, Bob and Denna Wright, Dave and Jean Smith, Christine and Ted Smith, Bruce Hopkins, Leo Fontain, Lynn Jorde, Shelly Hyde, Audrey Stevens, Marilyn Earle.
