William Remmes VERMILLION — William Remmes, 84, of Vermillion, SD passed away in his home on Octo- ber 2, 2011. Bill was born February 16, 1927 in Charter Oak, IA to Bernhard and Verna (Staley) Remmes. After his gradua- tion from Charter Oak High School, he joined the Army Air Corps for nine months and then served in the Marine Corps from 1945-1946 as a Corporal. When WWII ended he attended the University of Iowa where he ran on the track team. He joined the ROTC and was commissioned Lieutenant for the US Army after graduating from the Uni- versity. He then served in the Army during the Korean War in aerial re- connaissance, and after two years, he returned to Charter Oak to run an insurance agency and income tax service. He married Geraldine Heine in St. Helena on August 1, 1961, and moved to Vermillion from Fort Dodge, IA in 1972. He was a member of the Ameri- can Legion, VFW and the Knights of Columbus, and served on the SES- DAC board and the Vermillion Hospi- tal board. He was an active member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife Geri of Vermillion, four sons; Dominic (Jen- nifer) of Galesburg, IL, Paul of Chicago, IL, Mathew (Christine) of Lisle, IL and Ryan (Tisha) of Omaha, NE. Also surviving are two daugh- ters Jeanne (Paul) Ives of Wheaton, IL and Sarah (Tom) Taggart of Ver- million and 19 grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers: Fr. Richard Remmes of Arcadia, IA, Leo (Ruth) Remmes of Denison, IA, Joe Remmes of Omaha, and three sis- ters: Jean Remmes of Denison, Helen (Al) Steele of Olathe, KS, Cathy Jessen of Denison, and sisters-in-law Marian Remmes of Ames, IA and Colleen Schaben of Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: James, John and Tom, a sister and brother-in-law Marilyn and Blackie Mechura and a grandchild Mark Anthony Ives. A rosary will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4 at the St. Agnes Catholic Church with a Me- morial Mass at 5:00 p.m. and burial to follow in the Calvary Cemetery in Vermillion. Ray was born on January 14, 1926, to Joseph and Catherine (Plavec) Kocer on a farm north of Tabor, SD. Ray was baptized and confirmed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor. On June 12, 1945 Ray was united in mar- riage to Irene Carda at St. Wences- laus Catholic Church in Tabor. Ray and Irene farmed within the Tabor area for sev- eral years before settling on the family farm in 1966, where they continued to farm and raise their family. In 1993 they retired and moved into Tabor, but Ray continued to be involved with the family farm for many more years. Ray was an active member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and Tabor Chamber of Com- merce. While farming was a big part of his life, Ray also enjoyed socializing with friends and rela- tives, playing cards and playing softball. He organized the Tabor Jets softball team in 1945 with farmers, neighbors, relatives and friends. Ray remained the team pitcher and manager for over 50 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his children and grandchildren’s ac- tivities. Ray was a gentle, quiet, and hard-working man. He touched many people, changed some lives, and left a lasting im- pression on all of us. On August 22, 1970, she was united in marriage to Roger Dale Kostel at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor. She re- ceived her Teacher’s Certificate and began teaching at Petrik Coun- try School and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Grade School in Tabor. On September 7, 1971, she began working at the South Dakota Human Services Center as a librar- ian where she worked for the next forty years. Mary Lou was a 2008 nominee as a Hero In The Fight, in celebration of all professionals fighting for better mental health. She always enjoyed working with patients, to help them with their educational wants of their diseases and recreationally, too, to get their mind off their ill- ness. She enjoyed Czech food, car rides and most of all family gather- ings especially those out in the Black Hills. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and she always had a present for everyone. She loved flowers and researching family ge- nealogy. The band is raising funds to get to the Bowl game. An upcoming fundraiser is the quilt show “Stories of Inspiration” at the Im- manuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge, Neb., at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 9. Band mem- bers will be serving desserts and drawing for door prizes during the afternoon of stories. As a special feature tickets will be sale for folks to win two quilts specially designed and created to commemorate the band’s trip. Ray and Irenefarmed within theTabor area for sev-eral years beforesettling on thefamily farm in1966, where theycontinued to farmand raise theirfamily. In 1993they retired andmoved into Tabor,

but Ray continued to be involvedwith the family farm for manymore years.

Ray was an active member ofSt. Wenceslaus Catholic Churchand Tabor Chamber of Com-merce. While farming was a bigpart of his life, Ray also enjoyedsocializing with friends and rela-tives, playing cards and playingsoftball. He organized the TaborJets softball team in 1945 withfarmers, neighbors, relatives andfriends. Ray remained the teampitcher and manager for over 50years. He enjoyed spending timewith his family and attending hischildren and grandchildren’s ac-tivities. Ray was a gentle, quiet,and hard-working man. Hetouched many people, changedsome lives, and left a lasting im-pression on all of us.

Mary Lou was born on March18, 1949 to Lawrence W. and Tillie(Novotny) Herman at Sacred HeartHospital in Yankton, SD. She wasbaptized and confirmed at St.Wenceslaus Catholic Church inTabor, SD. On August 22, 1970, shewas united in marriage to RogerDale Kostel at St. WenceslausCatholic Church in Tabor. She re-ceived her Teacher’s Certificateand began teaching at Petrik Coun-try School and St. WenceslausCatholic Grade School in Tabor.On September 7, 1971, she beganworking at the South DakotaHuman Services Center as a librar-ian where she worked for the nextforty years. Mary Lou was a 2008nominee as a Hero In The Fight, incelebration of all professionalsfighting for better mental health.She always enjoyed working with

patients, to helpthem with theireducational wantsof their diseasesand recreationally,too, to get theirmind off their ill-ness.

She enjoyedCzech food, carrides and most ofall family gather-

ings especially those out in theBlack Hills. Her favorite holidaywas Christmas and she always hada present for everyone. She lovedflowers and researching family ge-nealogy.

COLERIDGE, Neb. — The Laurel-Con-cord-Coleridge Marching Band is going toplay in the New Year’s Day Parade and atthe Ticket City Bowl in Dallas. The band israising funds to get to the Bowl game.

An upcoming fundraiser is the quiltshow “Stories of Inspiration” at the Im-manuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge,Neb., at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 9. Band mem-

bers will be serving desserts and drawingfor door prizes during the afternoon ofstories. As a special feature tickets will besale for folks to win two quilts speciallydesigned and created to commemoratethe band’s trip.

Library To Offer‘Toddler Time’Toddler Time, a new pro-

gram for toddlers and theirparents/caregivers will beginthis fall at the Yankton Com-munity Library, 515 Walnut.

Toddler Time, designed forchildren ages 1-3, is a 20-minute program that intro-duces children to music,action songs, finger plays,nursery rhymes, short booksand stories.

Adults are encouraged to sitwith their child on the floor, orwith their child on their lap tohelp teach the finger plays andsongs.

The first six-week sessionwill begin on Thursday, Oct. 13,and run through Nov. 17. Eachsession will begin at 11 a.m.
