President’s Announcements
Jeanette makes announcements
Laurie talking about the visioning session
Sergeant Rod welcomed everyone to the
meeting, especially our visitors Lisa
Burgess (who will become a member
next meeting) and Geoff Harrap who
came with Andrew McD. Keith added
an extra toast to the opening formalities
“to the Australian Cricket Team!”
Sandra was invited to share about
“Inspire” see below, before Sergeant Rod
let it rip with a vast variety of fines that
ranged from Lyndon’s hair to Adrian’s
Tesla, all the more impressive as he was
dragged into the role at the late minute.
Michael P won the bottle of wine.
Jeanette had a copy of the Monday Tucker
roster in the middle of the table, looking for
more volunteers to fill the gaps. Also had
copies of the new Coastal Explorer
brochure which includes references to The
Rubeena (and some lovely photographs),
and information from Australian Rotary
Health. She will be sending out an email
on badges
Adrian volunteered to do the Bulletin in
Sandra’s absence.
Laurie J reminded everyone of the
visioning session on 22nd September 2-4pm
at Bond Street. Anticipated to have 5 or 6
activities over 2 hours to collect ideas,
thoughts and views which can be presented
back to the meeting on the following
Tuesday.
Andrew McD has been busy working on
Certificates of Currency and undertaking
risk assessments for Seed, Monday Tucker,
etc. He will be sending out some emails to
check about Working with Children checks.
Don Ripper talking about Rotary’s history and
ethos
Sandra sharing about the ‘Inspire’ event at The
Wedge
Sandra attended the ‘Inspire’ event last Friday that
was facilitated by students from Sale College. The
main guest speaker was Steven Bradbury, the
Olympic Gold Medal winning speed skater. He was
a very funny, but also was a great choice of someone
who could offer encouragement and inspiration to the
young people present. He won a gold medal at his
fourth Olympic Games in 2002 at Salt Lake City. He
had previously broken his neck (spending months in
a head and neck brace) and had his thigh rammed
through by another skater’s skate and had lost 4 litres
of blood and almost died (needing 111 stitches to repair).
Don R is off to New Zealand to
attend the zone conference which
will nominate the Region
Director.
He has been preparing materials
for coming Rotary Leadership
Institute training at Bairnsdale
(which has had second session
changed to 16th November). From
this material he reminded us that
from the earliest days of Rotary,
members have referred to each
other on a first-name basis.
Personal acquaintanceship and
friendship are cornerstones of
Rotary, it was natural that Rotary
clubs adopted the practice of
setting aside formal titles in
conversations among members.
Individuals who normally would
be addressed as Doctor, Professor,
Mister, the Honorable, Sir or Lord
are regularly called Joe, Bill,
Charley Jerry or Madge by other
Rotarians.
The characteristic Rotary club
name badge also fosters the first-
name custom and carries only the
given name or nickname, surname
and vocation.
Kerry had new sign at meeting.
(see photo at beginning of
Bulletin). She asked for members
to go to Payless Promotions (on
the right before the bridge on the
way out of Sale) ASAP to try on
and order their Rotary T shirts.
On a lighter note Alan has a new
steam whistle for The Rubeena.
He had been training hard since the age of sixteen, as his father who was an Australian Speed
Skating Champion, had kicked him out of bed at 6am every morning and made him go
running and train hard.
More photos below to go with last week’s report on progress with the Seed project.
Big thanks to RAL for the lend of their machinery. Sale Mixed Concrete supplied the
concrete and a big thanks to Harry, Johnsy, Corey and Ben for getting the job done.
By 2002 he was no longer the fastest skater in the
world so his coach advised him to not take risks but
rather keep out of trouble, and be ready to act when
others crashed out. That way he might just pick up
a bronze medal. As it was, all four of his
competitors in the final crashed out and he waltzed
over the line to win the gold medal. He said that he
was happy to take it for the twelve years of hard
work he had put in. His advice, have dreams
(otherwise you won’t get far), be prepared to work
hard for them (which includes planning and
discipline), and take good advice.
On the night Scout leader (and Paul Harris fellow)
Wendy Phelan was awarded a Community Award
for her inspiring example of leadership.
Several young people from Sale College and
Maffra College sang and played wonderful music,
and Holly Whitford (AFLW) and Jonathan Kendall
(ABC) also spoke. It was a great effort by the
students who organised the night, and a testament
to their teachers and college principal who
encouraged them.

In the absence of Straussy to give us a laugh this week, the editor offers a joke for
your amusement:
An atheist was taking a walk through the woods, admiring all that the "accident of evolution"
had created. "What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!" he said to
himself.
But then he heard a rustling in the bushes behind. As he turned to look, the atheist saw a 7-
foot grizzly bear charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over
his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him. He tried to run even faster, so
scared that tears were coming to his eyes. He looked over his shoulder again and the bear
was even closer. His heart was pumping frantically as he tried to run even faster, but he
tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up and saw the bear right on
top of him raising his paw to kill him.
At that instant the atheist cried out, "Oh my God!"
Just then, time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. The river even stopped
moving. A bright light shone upon the man. A voice came out of the sky saying, "You denied
My existence all of these years, taught others I don't exist and even credited My creation to a
cosmic accident and now you expect Me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count
you as a believer?"
The ever so proud atheist looked into the light and said, "It would be rather hypocritical for
me to ask to be a Christian after all these years, but could you make the bear a Christian?"
"Very well," said the voice.
As the light went out, the river ran. The sounds of the forest continued and the bear put his
paw down. The bear then brought both paws together, bowed his head and said, "Lord, I
thank you for this food that I am about to receive."
