A private security company under contract to the City of Chilliwack is offering landlords a service to detect marijuana grow-operations using a mobile heat-seeking device.

Brian Gladstone, CEO at Griffin Investigation & Securities Ltd., said the service, the first of its kind that he is aware of, will be offered throughout the Fraser Valley, Lower Mainland and Greater Vancouver.

He said the $14,000 mobile FLIR (Forward Looking Infra Red camera) is not as powerful as those that can detect human bod-ies, so privacy should not be an issue.

“We’re not out there trying to see people in their homes or what they’re up to,” he said.

However, the unit can measure

the “heat signature” of a rental property and detect the greater amount of heat required by a mar-ijuana grow-operation.

The inspection would normally take place from the roadside, at night, without entering the prop-erty.

Gladstone said once a grow-op is indicated, the property owner can give the tenant two-weeks notice of a physical inspection of the rental unit.

A marijuana grower would then likely quickly dismantle the equip-ment.

“They’re not going to want their grow-op found,” he said.

Property owners who buy into the service will also be able to advise prospective tenants that FLIR inspections will take place on a monthly basis.

“The whole idea is to prevent (grow-ops),” Gladstone said. “I hope we never find one.”

The $75 fee for the monthly FLIR inspection is a small price to pay for the thousands of dollars in remedial work that landlords face when a rental property is used for a marijuana grow operation.

Gladstone, a retired police offi-cer, said his company came up with the idea after doing some research and deciding it could be a money-maker for the company and at the same time help protect landlords from illegal marijuana growers.

“Landlords have no insurance to cover (the cleanup),” he said, which recently cost one Mission landlord $18,000.

Griffin recently won a security contract with the City of Chilliwack, but operates in several other Lower Mainland municipalities with a staff of over 100 and nine security vehicles.

The 20-year-old driver involved in a collision with a Chilliwack RCMP cruiser last Tuesday died in hospital yes-terday.

Steve Genberg of Mission, a graduate of Mission Secondary and an employee of Mission Towing, had been in hospi-tal in critical condition since the head-on collision between his Mustang and the marked cruiser.

A 19-year-old passenger in Genberg’s car was seriously injured.

The Abbotsford Police Department’s Major Crime Unit is investigating the crash, which occurred on the Lougheed Highway near Bodnar Road.

“The Abbotsford Police Department extends its condo-lences to the friends and fam-ily of this young man from Mission,” said a press release from the APD, issued Monday morning.

“The investigation into this tragic incident continues and our objective remains to con-duct a thorough, comprehen-sive and complete examination of facts and evidence.”

The police officer was treat-ed in hospital and released.

A unique summer program for teens in Chilliwack shows there’s a correlation between positive rein-forcement and success.

The Youth Extra Support (YES) program meshes work experience and skills development, with men-toring and counselling, recreation, and community service.

For local youth who didn’t man-age to land a summer job or get registered in a summer day camp, YES has become a structured and valuable program, developed by Ann Davis Transition Society staff.

It’s heading into its fifth year of operation with a solid track record.

“For many of the kids it’s their first experience with positive feed-back,” says YES program coordi-nator Steve Andrews, a child and youth counsellor for ADTS.

“Giving them individualized feed-back at the end of the day seems to make a huge difference.”

Recreation and community ser-vice are key components and the activities are also learning experi-ences.

A typical day will see the group starting out at the Ann Davis offic-es on Young Road for about an hour of skills development in a classroom-like setting.

Then they’ll head out and do a couple of hours of community ser-vice work like painting, landscap-ing, trail-building or walking dogs for example.

Thursday afternoon the kids were helping out at the Chilliwack Community Garden, which is being

developed on Wells Road by Food Matters Chilliwack and Chilliwack Society for Community Living.

The garden plot has been plowed and the YES team was helping pre-pare the lumber to make a series of raised vegetable beds at the site.

But just like in the real working world, if they’re going to be late one morning or too sick to come in, they have to phone in.

“But if they have a bad day and head home a little early, when they come back the next day we tell them it’s fantastic they’ve returned.”

This year Chilliwack school district officials are allowing YES participants to put their work expe-rience hours toward the 30-hour requirement in order to graduate from high school.

The program is for 13- to 17-year-olds who may be struggling in some areas, and it helps them fill in the gaps over the summer holi-days.

“They experience personal growth in this program because we ask them to set goals. For some it’s just arriving on time regularly.

“For others it may be becoming

work-ready or getting work experi-ence, so we’ll talk about interview skills and stress management.”

YES was made possible this summer with a $15,000 grant from Coast Capital’s Community Investment fund.

Two groups of about a dozen kids each are signed up for three week sessions in July and then in August.

“Sometimes kids return and go on to become junior leaders. They end up setting the standard for the others in the group.”

A good attitude goes a long way.

“I always tell the kids they can make things fun or miserable. It’s their choice.”

They are also acquir-ing life skills, which helps along the way to make them employment

ready. The elements of resume writing and interview role-playing are practised.

“They’re moving toward more positive social behaviour at the same time.”

At the end the pro-gram they all receive a written letter of ref-erence for their future studies and career searches.

Plus they get some spending money for their diligent efforts.

“Each youth is paid $25 a week for their vol-unteer work. That’s a big attraction for many of the kids. We treat it like a pay cheque. There’s a real sense of pride in earning and receiving a cheque. It works really well.”

Greenpeace’s Emerging From the Deep Report ranks Canadian supermarkets on seafood sustainability, including Canada’s eight major grocery chains. Western Canada’s Overwaitea Food Group (OFG), which operates Save-On-Foods, Overwaitea Foods, PriceSmart Foods, Cooper’s Foods and Urban Fare, ranked second overall with a score of 59%. Up from 51% last year, the score reflects OFG’s ongoing effort to improve its seafood procurement and offer customers ocean-friendly seafood. In June 2009, OFG announced its Sustainable Seafood Plan in conjunction with Canada’s SeaChoice program, a comprehensive program that ranks seafood sustainability using a simple rating system and provides a customer education and awareness program.Since then, OFG has delisted a number of threatened species, provided an industry leading reference guide for customers and team members and has continued to work with supplier partners to introduce new sustainable choices for

customers. Most recently, the company shifted over 75 percent of the sushi products offered in OFG’s Lower Mainland stores to locally sourced, ocean-friendly seafood, with other regions to follow. In its annual report, Greenpeace wrote “OFG is all about firsts as

the first retailer to source a more sustainable alternative to net-pen farmed salmon last year and the first to stop sourcing Redlisted canned yellowfin tuna

this year. OFG continues to provide more information to its customers and look into the sustainability of different product categories like sushi.”“We’re taking this journey one a step at a time and we’re pleased to see our efforts recognized by Greenpeace and our customers,” said OFG President Steve van der Leest. “Our goal is to help educate when it comes to making the right choices for our oceans. We’ve been busy partnering with our suppliers to bring more sustainable choices to our customers and we’re committed to helping create positive change in the marketplace.”

The city denied both requests.

“We would advise that we are no longer in possession of any records with respect to a review ... as any documentation was previously destroyed in accor-dance with the city’s records management policies,” the city clerk said in an Oct. 21 letter.

Any severance agreements with Sanborn were denied “in their entirety” as an “unreason-able invasion of a third party’s personal privacy,” the city clerk said.

The Progress accepted the city’s ruling on the review, but

appealed the decision not to release the amount of sever-ance pay, arguing that it was public money and taxpayers were entitled to know how it was spent.

City officials appeared to relent, with the assurance that no other details of the severance agreement were being sought, but later dug in their heels again, and an investigator from the Office of the Information and Privacy Commission was appointed.

In June this year, the city finally relented and disclosed the severance paid to Sanborn.

“We are compelled to dis-close the amount of remunera-tion paid to Grant Sanborn,”

the city clerk said in a June 20 letter. “We would advise that the severance payment to Mr. Sanborn was in the amount of $104,473.”

In a July, 5 letter to The Progress editor, investigator Al Boyd said he determined “it was not in keeping with the Freedom of Information and Privacy Act for the City to have refused to disclose (the dollar amount of severance paid to a former employee).”

“I informed the City of my view and it did eventually agree to release a copy of the request-ed information,” he said.

But Rice still felt com-pelled to visit city hall last week to get more information about that intersection. He was told by neighbours that the area was the scene of a fatal crash a couple of years ago.

They thought some-thing had fallen off a truck when they saw Jeremy thrown off the bike last Sunday.

“The problem with that corner is that you cannot make a good decision until you’re out in the roadway,” Rice said. “If you’re trying to turn left or right, you can’t see the traffic com-ing from the eastern direction very well.”

City officials said they made initial mea-surements and will be doing more at the crash site.

The crash history at the intersection is considered “light” by officials, with one crash there in 2010 and two in 2009, including a fatal. But the fatal incident did not have anything specifically to do with the intersection, staff said.

A visibility test is being planned, which is a specific field engi-neering test to assess the driver’s view of side streets.

Judging from all the dogs strolling with their owners at the Harrison Festival of the Arts this weekend, folks are pretty devot-ed to ensuring their pets’ long, healthy lives. Generally, there is a guideline as to which breeds are at risk for certain diseases. But now there’s a new study that provides a rare and comprehen-sive look at the causes of death in more than 80 breeds.

The study, which was recent-ly published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, is bound to be helpful in develop-ing breed-specific maintenance programs.

“If we can anticipate better how things can go wrong for dogs, we can manage their wellness to keep them as healthy as pos-sible,” said study co-author Dr. Kate Creevy, assistant professor with the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine.

Creevy and her colleagues looked at data from the Veterinary Database to find the causes of

death of nearly 75,000 dogs span-ning 82 breeds over a 20-year peri-od from 1984 to 2004. They classi-fied the deaths by organ systems and disease processes and analyzed the data by breed, age and body mass.

“The study was the idea of my collaborator, Daniel Promislow, who is a geneticist,” said Creevy. “He studies aging in a variety of species and became intrigued with the fact that large mammals live longer than small mammals but that situation is reversed among dog breeds. He became curious as to why that might be and whether finding

differences in the causes of death based on the sizes of dogs might yield information that applies not only to dogs but also to people.”

Scientists first mapped the dog genome in 2003 and have since compiled data on genetic varia-tions for over 80 breeds. By com-bining that data with the study material, they could search for genes that influence the risks of diseases.

Some of their findings sur-prised them. Toy breeds such as Chihuahuas and Maltese are known to have high rates of car-diovascular disease (19 and 21 per cent of breed deaths respec-tively), but they found that fox terriers also have high rates of cardiovascular disease at 16 per cent.

Golden retrievers and boxers are known to have high rates of cancer (50 and 44 per cent of deaths respectively) but they

found that the Bouvier des Flandres actually has a higher death rate from cancer at 47 per cent than the boxer.

They found that larger breeds are more likely to die of musculo-skeletal disease, gastrointestinal disease and, most notably, cancer. Smaller breeds had higher death rates from endocrine causes. But breeding for certain traits may also increase the risk of disease.

For instance, short noses in bulldogs could increase the risk of upper respiratory diseases because of the altered airflow. Respiratory disease, though, was also the most common cause of death for Afghan hounds and the Vizsla, which couldn’t be explained.

“Sometimes the cause of death may be related to how we use dogs more than their genetic back-ground,” Creevy said. “Treeing walker coonhounds have a high

proportion of deaths from infec-tion.”

Coonhounds are woodland hunting dogs in the U.S. south-east. The question becomes do these dogs have genetically poor immune systems or are they are higher risk because of the kind of environment they are exposed to?

The study intriguingly raised more questions than it answered and their research continues in the search to understand breed-based genetic differences.

“(We will be) looking at indi-vidual breeds and individual dis-eases,” said Creevy. “It is at this level that the work will become the most valuable to dog breed-ers and owners.”

Learning about canine disease genetics could also help develop new strategies for diagnosis and treatment for human health.

End ICBC monopolyThe latest proposal from the Insurance Corporation of British

Columbia is another clear indication that the Crown corporation is reaching the end of the road in its ability to properly serve the province’s motorists.

ICBC announced last week that it has notified the BC Utilities Commission that it plans to apply for a rate hike.

“What’s happened really is the economy has rebounded a lot faster than most people have expected. That’s put more cars on the road.” ICBC spokesman Mark Jan Vrem told the media. He also pointed to an increase in body-injury claims as a result of wet weather.

And while most, if not all, businesses would celebrate an eco-nomic rebound and additional customers, ICBC apparently sees it as a negative. However, that stance gives rise to a very simple solution: If ICBC is troubled by an increase in drivers, perhaps the time has come to end the corporation’s monopoly on basic insurance coverage.

The latest news comes less than two months after Christy Clark’s Liberal government shot down ICBC’s proposal to increase insurance rates for drivers who receive as little as a single speed-ing ticket.

While those measures seemed excessive, they were imminently more fair than the proposal that will be put before the BCUC.

While the corporation has steadily increased rates on at-fault drivers, this latest proposed hike will take safe drivers along for the ride.

The time has come to see if private companies can provide the service at a better value to the province’s drivers.

Regarding the letter from Patrician Swen, “Licence rules unfair.”

I cannot help wondering when ICBC got into the medical profes-sion of diagnosing dementia. This is something only doctors can really determine. Just because someone cannot remember a set of words told to them, that does not prove them to be a bad driver. When you are on the road your concentration is on what’s

happening around you, not on what has been said. Being vigi-lant in driving is more important for preventing accidents. That’s why a person’s driving record should be taken into consider-ation for preventing mishaps and if necessary a road test.

Also, there is another aspect. We live in a community of senior citizens. Most often they are the necessary volunteers help-ing any number of organizations

with their free time. They need to get around by themselves. These people are badly needed. If their driver’s licence is taken from them because nervousness made them forget words said to them, their usefulness is taken away, their health starts to dete-riorate causing medical difficul-ties, and everyone loses.

I want to convey the message to parents of all kids who are doing very ugly things, espe-cially during the night.

I usually go for a walk in the morning between 6 and 6:30 a.m. every day. But this morning, when I came out of my house for a walk, I was very much surprised by the scene in front of my house. The rocks from our property were scat-tered on the road.

I thought that the kids might be playing

with these rocks and scattered them here and there. I picked them up off the road so that they may not cause an accident to the vehicles. Then I started on my walk as usual.

On the way I was very astonished to see that all the signs of the daycare centre on Teskey Road were removed and thrown away from their original places. The new trees which were planted by the city a few months

ago were removed and some of them were destroyed. I also saw a few glow light lamps, broken glass beer bot-tles, sensor lights, and garbage in the middle of the road.

In this letter I want to convey the message to all parents to please teach their kids not to do this type of mischief when people are sleep-ing. In this way we all could save the personal property from damage, beautiful human lives

from accidents, and the environment, too.

In my opinion this is due to lack of supervi-sion and good behav-iour and less time spent with their children.

I am an immigrant here in beautiful B.C., Canada. I am writing to the editor for the first time. I hope to convey the message to all good parents of kids who are doing very wrong things, especially dur-ing summer vacation.

Seniors need their vehicles

Do you know where your kids are?

I would like to comment on Harrison Hot Springs beach. This past Sunday my husband and I packed up a lovely picnic to spend the day at Harrison. When we arrived and went to find a nice spot on the grass I was so shocked at the repulsive sight. There was duck feces all over the entire grassed area and the sand leading to the water was literally covered in duck feces. You couldn’t let a child walk anywhere in that entire area. Putting down a blanket was totally impossible!

We were so offended by the duck feces surrounding our chair that we couldn’t even find a clear spot to put our picnic basket down, never mind eat around that filth.

Why aren’t they cleaning up this mess? This week is the Arts Festival in Harrison and I would be ashamed if I was the organizer of this event for people to come and see this disgusting mess!

As of today my faith in humankind has been restored. All too often we tend to focus on the evil in people and the

decline of the human race. Partly to blame for that is the news we hear on TV, or

what we read in the papers, which often points out all the horrible things that are happening around the world.

Unfortunately, all the kind and wonderful things that hap-pen to us in our everyday life doesn’t get noticed by many.

Today I was shown that there is most likely just as much right in our world as there is wrong.

As I stood in the Shopper’s Drug Mart parking lot I was in a panic; I had realized that I had left my keys, with my house keys attached, in the car and locked the door (I don’t have family in town, nor do I remember any phone numbers off the top of my head), when this unknown, but incredibly caring and generous lady became my guardian angel. She took matters into her hands and took care of absolutely everything.

And all she meant to do was go for lunch. This kindness I will never forget, and I want to thank her

once more from the bottom of my heart.Heidi Methorst

Chilliwack RCMP are reporting a rash of eight B&Es on the north side of Chilliwack in the past three weeks.

They all may have been committed by one suspect, warn police.

“The break-ins are occurring through unlocked doors and windows in the early morning hours and the

suspect appears to be targeting home elec-tronics,” said RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck.

These are brazen crimes of opportunity and police say if the opportunity is elimi-

nated, so will the crime spree hopefully.

“Patio doors and win-dows need to be locked and stay locked, other-wise we leave ourselves vulnerable to these types of crimes,” said the officer.

It could be one person responsible for the rash of break-ins and police are asking the public for help by reporting to the RCMP anything out of the ordinary in their neighbourhoods.

“It’s pretty brazen to break-into homes in the morning when people are potentially home and we want this to stop.”

The male suspect is described as Caucasian, between five-foot-ten and six-foot and about 170 lbs., wearing blue or green pants and pos-sibly work boots.

The primary mode of transportation is a bicy-cle, say police, but they also believe the perpe-trator has access to a vehicle.

Anyone with info can call 604-792-4611 and ask to speak to Cpl. Williams of the Property Crime Unit or Crime Stoppers for a possible cash reward at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

The strategy when selling your home and buying anotherTiming can sometimes be diffi cult if you have to sell a

home before you can buy another one. Most people need the equity from the sale of their fi rst

home for the down payment on the new house. If your present home goes on the market fi rst, you may

be concerned that it will sell before you fi nd the one you want to buy. If you fi nd the perfect home before your present home is under contract, the sellers may be reluctant to accept your offer, and you may be too nervous to sign a contract.

It is a good idea to sit down with a Realtor for some professional advice before you begin your search. If you have found the house you want, you can ask the lender about arranging a short-term bridge loan that can make it possible for you. Many lenders provide short term loans for just this type of situation. The principal is paid back when you close the sale of your present house.

If your current home is priced competitively, there is a good possibility of selling your home quickly, in which case a bridge loan is a tool that could work for you. Your Realtor and a knowledgeable mortgage lender are the team you need to turn your dream into reality.

As part of your selling strategy, it is a good idea to have your present home listed for sale before you even begin a serious search for a new home. Having a fi rm offer on your present home will make you attractive to sellers in two ways. You won’t have to include a subject clause in your offer to

cover the sale of your present home. And you will look more qualifi ed fi nancially, which will improve your bargaining position if you negotiate on the price or terms. In a situation where there are multiple offers, the chances of your offer being accepted are increased if your offer isn’t dependent on selling another house before you can make a move.

From the point of view of selling your home, should you accept an offer containing a subject clause that makes the buyers’ purchase dependent upon selling their present home? Your decision should be based on several factors. Is their home being professionally marketed at this time? How long has it been on the market? If the house doesn’t sell, can the buyers take out a bridge loan or make other arrangements to get to the closing table? How important is timing for you? If you do accept such an offer you still continue marketing your home and can accept another offer (and void theirs) if their house has not sold.

Therefore an offer that is subject to the sale of another property can be structured so there is no risk to the seller and the buyer runs the risk of their offer being “bumped” within a short period of time (24-72 hours), should you accept a second offer.

Subject sales can work well for the sellers. The buyer is not in a position to ask for concessions on price or terms and may be able to get interim fi nancing.

Each situation is different, however, so your Realtor will go over all the terms before you accept or counter any offer.

Hello, my name is Corny Woelders, I am one of the proud owners of Landmark Realty Chilliwack. I am married and have two great kids. I grew up in Chilliwack and graduated from C.S.S.S. (a long time ago) and then moved to Abbotsford where I met my wife of 23 years. I predominately worked in the poultry and dairy industry and also ran our own Poultry Farm. I became a Realtor® a number of years ago and worked out of the Landmark Abbotsford offi ce. However, I found myself selling a lot of homes in Chilliwack for friends and family, so when a Landmark franchise came available, my partners and I knew that Chilliwack was the place to go. Today’s low interest rates, plus low prices, plus high inventory, equals the perfect buyers market. So come on in and visit our offi ce and I will help you with all your real estate needs.

Karen Corbeil is organizing a chili cook-off at the Birchwood Retirement Suites to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Raising funds through chili

Katie BartelThe Progress

A walk was a chal-lenge, but chili, seniors could do.

When the Terry Fox Foundation contacted the Birchwood asking if the Chilliwack retire-ment home would be interested in hosting a walk, community rela-tions coordinator Karen Corbeil was hesitant.

“A walk is a bit chal-lenging for us,” said Corbeil, noting the age of their residents range anywhere from 70 to 95. “And I didn’t know how much money we’d actually be able to raise from it.”

But because the Birchwood was already hosting a block party, Corbeil suggested they tie in a fundraiser. And chili, she said, they could do.

“The seniors love chili, they really do.”

This Friday, July 22, the Birchwood is hosting a chili cook-off block party that is both a fundraiser and a meet-your-neighbours get together.

“Many people in the

community know us as the Birchwood, the building, and a retire-ment residence for seniors,” said Corbeil. “What people may not be aware of is that we offer activities, social events, meeting space and support for all seniors in the commu-nity – even those who don’t live with us. We thought a block party would be a fun way for the public to get to know us and our residents.”

So far three certified chefs have put their chili recipes into the ring: two from Chartwell Seniors Housing group and one from Best Western Country Rainbow Inn.

“You can have a lot of fun with chili,” said Corbeil.

Whether by using secret ingredients like maybe chocolate or pineapple or something even crazier, or by com-ing up with a totally rocking name like Hunka Hunka Burning Chili, which one chef has already laid claim to.

Chili chefs will be dressed in theme to match their chili, and will be judged not only on the taste of their chili, but on showman-ship as well.

For a donation, guests receive a taster kit that includes cups for the chili, a hot dog,

drink and a ballot for the People’s Choice Award.

As well, judges will accept bribes by way of donation to the Terry Fox Foundation.

“Terry believed that every person could make a difference and we believe that too,” said Corbeil.

“For our seniors, this is about getting actively involved in fundraising. They really do appreci-ate being able to help out.”

A sentiment direc-tors of the Terry Fox Foundation love to hear.

In an effort to con-tinue senior involve-ment, the Terry Fox Foundation created the Silver Fox Run last year, which has the founda-tion teaming up with retirement homes to help create new, innova-tive ways for fundrais-ing that work for the aging population.

Some homes have hosted movie nights, bake sales and book fairs. Some have had participants walking for months, logging their mileage, with a hope that by September, they’ll have clocked the full 10 km distance of the Terry Fox Run. In Chilliwack, they do chili cook-offs – all with the Terry Fox Foundation backing their efforts.

Donna White, pro-vincial director of the Terry Fox Foundation said that because so many of Terry’s origi-nal supporters are now seniors, the foundation felt it imperative to cre-ate opportunities to allow them to continue their support if they so desired.

“We didn’t want to leave anybody out,” said White. “That was Terry’s wish, that any-thing held in his name is open and inclusive for anybody to participate.”

The chili cook-off is the first Terry Fox fundraiser in Chilliwack since the passing of Betty Fox last month.

“I think Betty’s pass-ing has maybe reiterat-ed for people this needs to keep going,” White said. “For 30 years Betty has been the face and the driving force of what we do, and what a nice way to continue to not only honour her son but to honour her.”

The Team Up for Terry Chili Cook-Off Block Party is from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday just outside the Birchwood on Patten Ave.

Any restaurant inter-ested in competing can contact the Birchwood at 604-792-8793 ext. 2015.

They have dragged away a staggering 65 tonnes of garbage off the banks of the world-class Chilliwack-Vedder River system.

The Chilliwack/Vedder River Cleanup Society has been dedi-cated to keeping the pristine riverside area clean since 2002, and is going strong this summer.

The second river cleanup of the year is set to go with volun-teers, groups and rec-reational users head-ing to the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve on Saturday, July 23 for the hour-long registra-tion starting at 8 a.m.

Since the weather has been so unstable organizers recommend that folks dress for rain with gum boots or wad-ers being very helpful but not absolutely nec-essary. Gloves, pick-up tools and garbage bags will be provided. Chilliwack’s Tim

Hortons will also be supplying donuts, cof-fee and drinks as usual. The cleanup runs from 9 a.m to noon. More at www.cleanrivers.ca.

Walking into Birdie’s Bakery and Cottage Catering is like step-ping into the parlour of a country home.

It has all the warmth and appeal of a bygone time, with the promise of something good coming out of the kitchen at any moment.

Situated amongst the funky little shops on Mill Street, Birdies offers a cosy respite from a busy day of shopping. Tasteful decorated, with a black-tiled hearth, framed by a cream-coloured mantel piece, the shop offers both elegance and charm.

But the decor is not what peo-ple come for at Birdies. Taking centre stage inside is a display case filled with an array of bak-ery treats. They come from the big kitchen in the back where Johanna MacDonald and her team start their day each morning, long before most of Chilliwack is even awake.

Johanna emerges through the swinging kitchen door with a wel-coming smile.

She took over the bakery just a few months ago, after seeing it for sale in the local paper. It is some-

thing she’s wanted to do for some time. With a background in pharmacy, her kitchen is now her new lab, where a fresh scone or a sticky bun is just what the doctor ordered on a cool damp morning – the perfect prescription for happiness.

Johanna’s enthu-siasm is palpable. “I enjoy this so much,” she says. “It’s like I’m playing.”

But playfulness aside, she and her

staff of three take the baking seri-ously.

“We work as a team and I couldn’t do it without them,” she says.

The scones and the sticky buns are made fresh daily. There’s fresh soup in the winter, and a hot bowl of chili available any time. She’s

recently brought in the services of a professional cake decorator for that extra dash of flair.

Besides the baking, Birdies also has fresh sandwiches; enjoy them on the little bistro table outside, Johanna says, or take them to Rotary Community Park just down

the street.Birdie’s catering service, mean-

while, offers sandwich and dessert trays for gatherings around town.

Birdies Bakery and Cottage Catering is located at 9371 Mill Street. For more information, call 604.793.1993.

Fashion ideas from Kathy’s ClosetWhen Kathy

Connelly was look-ing for a new name for her clothing bou-tique, “Kathy’s Closet” seemed the perfect fit.

Not only does it describe the tight quar-ters she now occupies on Spadina Avenue, but whenever her friends are looking for some-thing new to wear, says Kathy with a laugh, they often think of her closet.

Kathy is still unpack-ing following her move from Wellington Avenue – where the shop was called Grapevine Clothing.

It’s been a bit of an ordeal going from a 1,400-square-foot loca-tion to a space half that size. But the move has allowed her to further refine her offerings, ensuring that only the best items are available to her clients.

Kathy’s Closet is a consignment store – a very discriminating one. The clothing must meet a couple of criteria, she insists. It must be fashionable, and it must

meet a certain standard for quality.

For her customers, that means they’ll find quality clothing at rea-sonable prices. It also means the fashions they’ll find at Kathy’s are not what they’d find off the rack at the near-est outlet store.

“It’s like a treasure hunt,” she says enthusi-astically.

Her stock is drawn from fashions from a number of sources. People might be look-ing to refresh their own wardrobe. They might have been given something that doesn’t fit quite right, or is the wrong colour. Or maybe they’ve just got too many dresses filling up the closet.

They bring the cloth-ing to Kathy, and she shares it with her cus-tomers.

It’s the perfect way to recycle “previously loved” clothing, she says with a laugh.

Kathy is no stranger to fashion. (She once owned a shop a couple

doors down.)“I’ve always been into

fashion, and art,” she says. With fashion, she explains, “your body is your canvas.”

Kathy is also a good source of fashion

advice. She offers ward-robe consultations for people who might want a new look, but aren’t sure where to start.

She also has plans for the shop. In the future Kathy’s Closet will be

carrying makeup, as well as hand-crafted jew-elry from local artists (including her own).

Kathy’s Closet is located at 45789 Spadina Ave., (next to Cheeki Cherry).

Kathy Connelly has opened Kathy’s Closet on Spadina Avenue.

Two Chilliwack resi-dents were recently hon-oured at a Chilliwack Mt. Cheam Rotary Club dinner by being awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship. Matthew Redekop and Ena Vermerris were chosen as recipients in recogni-tion of the exceptional service that they pro-vide either globally or locally.

Matthew Redekop works with Hope International and his dedication to the global community is exem-plary. Partnering with the Chilliwack-Mt. Cheam Rotary Club, he’s worked on a vari-ety of projects including a water supply project in Ethiopia, providing clean drinking water and chickens in Cambodia, helping reforest areas in the Dominican Republic and working to provide funding for neighbour-hood care points in Swaziland. “These initia-tives have resulted in a dramatic improvement in living conditions for thousands of people liv-ing in poverty. Three of our club members travelled to Cambodia in 1996 to see first hand the effects of our part-nership and the work that Matthew is involved with and they were suit-ably impressed,” noted committee member,

Rick Chappell.While Redekop

works with people in poverty, Ena Vermerris deals with Chilliwack’s abandoned, unwanted and unloved pet popu-lation. Vermerris was an accomplished nurse but after her retirement, decided to dedicate her life to our four legged friends, especially

cats. Along with volun-teers, she started the Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven and today the Safe Haven is a sanc-tuary for cats, many of whom have lived through some horrific situations. Some are adopted and go on to enjoy a loving home while others can’t be adopted given that they

are extremely fearful and apprehensive given their previous circum-stances. The Safe Haven also runs a successful community spay and neuter program which has helped reduce the unwanted cat and dog population. “When I retired, I vowed that I would devote the rest of my life to the cats and

that’s what I plan to do,” she said.

The Chilliwack Mt. Cheam Rotary Club has started its new Rotary year with Dave Sliman as its president. Sliman, along with an ener-getic board and dedi-cated Rotary members are looking forward to another successful Rotary year.

New chlorination equipment is being tested out on Marble Hill and Chilliwack Mountain this week.

It could affect up to 500 residents in the hillside areas served by the self-contained drinking water distri-

bution systems, but it won’t impact other areas of the city, said officials.

The testing comes on the heels of recon-structed water res-ervoirs and pump upgrades in those spe-cific systems which

came with new emer-gency chlorination equipment. That new equipment now has to be tested to ensure it works as intended.

A minimal amount of chlorine is being inject-ed into both drinking water systems, which will then be traced by city staff as it travels through the system. Once it reaches the far ends of each system, the chlorine will be switched off and will dissipate through dilu-tion.

The temporary chlo-rination process of the hillsides started on Monday, July 18 and should be wrapped up by Friday, July 22, according to city staff.

For more informa-tion call the city’s pub-lic works department at 604-793–2810.

Community■ IT’S A PARTY

Crowds start to gather in the Family Fun Zone at Chilliwack’s Party in the Park Friday. The event, which takes place at Rotary Community Park downtown, features music, entertainment and a farmer’s market every Friday night all summer long.

Page 22: Tues. July 19, 2011 Chilliwack Progress

The Chilliwack Chiefs have dipped into the past to fill their coach-ing staff of the present, bringing four ex-Chiefs back into the fold.

General manager and head coach Harvey Smyl announced the hiring of his assistant coaches Monday morn-ing; Doug Ast and Brandon Fleenor and Rob Bruni.

Also coming on board, Paul Nicolls as the strength and condi-tioning coach.

All are current Chilliwack residents, helping Smyl partly accomplish his goal of giving the team local connections.

Ast had a tremen-dously successful play-ing career with the Chiefs, and he remains the only player in fran-chise history to be captain for two seasons (1992-1994).

During the 1993-94 campaign he recorded a whopping 55 goals and 130 points in 51 games. That was Smyl’s first year as head coach, with the team finishing 28-28-4.

Ast went on to a hockey career spanning 13 seasons. He played university hockey at the University of British Columbia before mov-ing on to pro stops in the East Coast Hockey League (Wheeling Nailers), American Hockey League (Syracuse Crunch) and now-defunct International Hockey League (Long Beach Ice Dogs and Manitoba Moose).

He twice attended training camp with the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks, and the dimin-utive forward even spent three seasons playing professional roller hock-ey, suiting up for the Vancouver Voodoo and Los Angeles Blades of the now-defunct Roller Hockey International league.

But Ast’s greatest hockey accomplish-ments came over-seas, playing for two Deutsche Eishockey Liga (German Ice Hockey League) teams.

Ast crossed the pond in 2001, playing two

seasons for the Iserlohn Roosters.

In 2003-04 he signed with Ingolstadt ERC, spending the next six seasons as a Panther.

Ast played in the Spengler Cup in Davos Switzerland in 2008.

Following his retire-ment after the 2008-09 season, the Panthers raised his No. 18 jersey into the rafters at the Saturn Arena.

“He’s had a ton of on-ice success and boasts strong leadership and communication skills,” Smyl noted. “He is very intelligent and enjoys teaching.”

Fleenor is regarded as one of the most popu-lar players to ever wear a Chiefs jersey.

Fleenor spent three seasons in the BCHL, starting with the Langley Thunder before moving home. The big blueliner was a Chief between 1997-99, playing 87 regular season games for the franchise.

During the 1998-99 season he played 56 games and amassed 44 points and 191 penalty minutes.

Fleenor went on to six years of pro hockey in four different leagues. His last season was 2004-05 with the Motor City Maniacs of the United Hockey League, playing alongside NHLers Chris Chelios, Kevin Hatcher and Sean Avery.

Fleenor’s been back in Chilliwack the last five years coaching pee-wee and bantam AAA with Chilliwack Minor Hockey.

“I have so much respect for the Chiefs ownership group, and to be able to coach with Harv will be unbeliev-able,” he said. “Dougie, Robbie and Paul are great guys and I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with them.”

Nicolls returns to the Chiefs for his second tour of duty as a part of the coaching staff. He was an assistant for Smyl from 1998 to 2000, helping the team to a bronze medal at the 2000 Royal Bank Cup in Fort MacMurray, AB.

Nicolls played two seasons for the Chiefs from 1990-92 and was

a teammates of Ast. His playing career didn’t go beyond junior, but Nicolls stayed in the sport as an official, reff-ing five years in the pro ranks.

In recent years, the 36-year-old has focussed his attention on person-al training, opening the Xceed Training Center in Chilliwack (www.

xceedtraining.com).Nicolls graduated

from the Institute of Integrated Nutrition in 2011 and Smyl says he will fit perfectly into his role.

“Paul’s playing and coaching experience provides him invaluable knowledge as a per-sonal trainer,” he said. “He understands what

a player needs to do to play at this level.”

Bruni will be enter-ing his ninth year as a goaltending coach for the Chiefs. As a player, Bruni spent five seasons stopping pucks at the junior level for Prince George, Abbotsford and Langley.

Bruni is the owner/operator of Bruni 5

Enterprises, a floor-ing contractor in Chilliwack.

“Having the Chiefs back in Chilliwack is amazing and being able to work with the coach-ing staff Harv has put together will be awe-some,” he said.

Smyl sees Bruni as a perfect fit for his coach-ing staff.

”Rob as been part of junior A hockey for a long time and his expe-rience will be a real ben-efit for our entire coach-ing staff.”

Season tickets are now on sale for the 2011-12 BCHL season. For more information call 604-392-4433 or visit www.chilliwackchiefs.net.

Chilliwack’s bantam AA baseball Cougars continued their winning ways on Tuesday night, downing the Abbotsford Angels 5-1.

The Cougars opened up a 2-0 lead in the first on singles by Cohen Bogart and Evan Kellington, followed by a double to the fence by Josh Anderson.

Chilliwack chucker Tony Pharand was nearly unhittable, keep-ing Abby off the board until the fourth.

Chilliwack put the

game away with a three-run sixth.

Zac Middleton, Kellington and Anderson banged out singles and Devyn Heggs had a double.

This win leaves the Cougars at 5-1 in pro-vincial qualification play heading into the last week of the season.

Sports & Stuff in the Chilliwack Mall is bring-ing in a trio of B.C. Lion heavyweights on Aug. 6.

From 1 to 3 p.m., Canadian Football League fans will be able to meet and greet star wideout Geroy Simon, one of the top pass catchers in CFL history.

The longtime Lion is closing on in former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Milt Stegall

for top spot in all-time receiving yards — if he doesn’t catch Stegall this year, it’s a near cer-

tainty he’ll do it early in the 2012 season.

So far this year, the Pennsylvania native has 16 catches for 272 yards and one touchdown.

Simon has spent 11 of his 13 CFL season on the west coast.

Solomon Elimimian will be joining Simon

in Chilliwack. The 2011 CFL rookie of the year is off to a dominating start, teaming with Korey Banks and Anton McKenzie to give the Lions one of the best linebacking corps in the league.

Elimimian was born in Calabar, Nigeria and played his college ball at the University of Hawaii.

In three games this year he has 21 tackles and one fumble recov-ery.

The third Lion mak-

ing his way to Chilliwack is placekicker Paul McCallum. The Surrey native is back for his 19th year in the CFL, his eighth kicking for the Lions.

Years ago, McCallum was a member of the B.C. Football Conference Surrey Rams, and last season he beat off a bid by another former Ram, Sean Whyte, to take his job.

During his career, McCallum has punted for 70,079 yards, place kicking for another

17,000.The 41-year-old has

a career 78.1 field goal percentage with 2,368 points scored.

The Chilliwack Mall is located at 45610 Luckakuck Way.

Fans are encouraged to bring their own cam-eras for pictures. Those who arrive early will be eligible for early-bird prize draws.

Mosquito Control Update from the Fraser Valley Regional District

Rain and continuous high-water levels on the Fraser River have led to an unusually large number of mosquitoes this summer, creating a major annoyance for many of this region’s residents. To address the extreme mosquito levels, the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) will be spending an additional $100,000 this summer on ramped-up control efforts. The FVRD’s mosquito control contractor (Morrow Bioscience Ltd.) has been working non-stop since early May to reduce mosquitoes and will continue doing so for as long as necessary.

Efforts to combat mosquitoes are ongoing and include:

On-the-ground larvicide* treatment of mosquito development sites. Wide-scale aerial (helicopter) larvicide* treatment of sites that are inaccessible by foot or boat. To date the FVRD has treated over 1200 hectares spanning from Abbotsford to Hope. Continuously seeking out, monitoring, GPS-mapping and treating of known and new mosquito development sites. The FVRD is also making every effort to respond to the hundreds of emails and phone calls received daily from the public during this unusually busy mosquito season.

Larvicide* is a bacterial pesticide that is used to kill mosquitoes while they are still in the larval stage. It specifically targets mosquito larvae, and as used, is otherwise harmless to the environment.

Adulticide is a chemical pesticide used to kill adult mosquitoes. Adulticiding, commonly referred to as “fogging”, is not a practice that is currently used in BC, as it is not considered to be an effective method of control. The FVRD does not conduct adulticiding.

Apply insect repellent containing DEET according to label instructions when outdoors. Wear shoes and socks and long-sleeved, light-coloured, loose-fitting shirts and pants when outdoors. Avoid mosquito-laden areas at dawn and dusk. Install tight-fitting screens on doors and windows. Eliminate or regularly change water in saucers under flower pots, in bird baths, old tires, pet dishes, gutters, pool cavers, trampolines, tarps and other areas where rainwater may collect. Swimming pools should be properly maintained and chlorinated and wading pools should be emptied and turned over when not in use. Use fine mesh to cover rain barrels and containers that cannot be dumped.

WALMART CORRECTION NOTICEOn page 5 of the yer distributed on July 15 the pic-ture of the Next6 Tablet (#30143088) was incorrect.

The correct picture is as follows:

We apologize for any

inconvenience this may have caused.

Sports

A former Chilliwack Bruins radio voice is heading to the city, and the Abbotsford Heat have lost their voice.

Dave Sheldon, the local American Hockey League club’s director of communications and broadcast, resigned suddenly last week to take a job at CKNW radio.

“I wasn’t looking to leave, but there are opportunities that arise in this business,” Sheldon said. “I enjoyed what I was doing with

the Heat, and I really enjoyed building some-thing from the ground up.

“CKNW, for years in this market, has been the flag-bearer for news and sports in this mar-ket. When someone like that gives you some interest, you’d better lis-ten to what they have to say.”

Sheldon has done plenty of moving over the last five years.

After doing radio in Everett he moved to Chilliwack in time to

be the Bruins colour man alongside Denny Larochelle in 2005-06.

The following year he replaced Larochelle as the play-by-play voice, holding the job for one season before parting with the club.

Sheldon moved to Vancouver to take over as the radio voice and communications man for the Western Hockey League Giants.

He joined the Heat in 2009, prior to their inaugural season.

Among other duties

at CKNW, Sheldon will host Sportstalk on the weekends (9 p.m. to midnight).

On his way out, Sheldon thanked Abbotsford hockey fans for being so generous to him during his time with the Heat.

“This will probably help the Heat in some ways, in the sense that they know they have someone in Vancouver who has their back and is going to give them some coverage,” he said.
