His latest, Dinotrux, has been filmed by DreamWorks Animation. Lisa See, author of many critically acclaimed international best-sellers, is probably best known for Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. For this novel, she traveled to a remote area of China to research the writing invented, used, and kept a secret by women for over 1,000 years. MGM Studios has acquired the film rights. See’s other books are On Gold Mountain: The One Hundred Year Odyssey of My Chinese-American Family, Flower Net, Peony in Love, and her latest best-seller, Shanghai Girls. them.

From the Leadership CouncilWhat a full calendar our Tucson Brandeis

has! Thanks to Esme Ferrante and Sara

Wisdom for creating a very memorable

University on Wheels program. All in

attendance enjoyed meeting and chatting

with Luke Teece, our scholarship recipi-

ent. Lorraine Sparrow, from the National

Alumni Office, brought Waltham to Tucson.

Dr. Dan Perlman’s insight into ecosystems

around the world and in our own backyard

was fascinating.

It is hard to believe another year has passed since we were

busy selling books for our Annual Used Book Sale. This year’s

sale will be at the Foothills Mall from January 14 to 24. Contact

Meg Sivitz, 615-4739, to volunteer.

We will hold our annual Book & Author Event on February 10

and 11. The evening Soirée will be held at the beautiful home

of Ruthann Pozez. The Book & Author day event will be held

at Skyline Country Club with four authors who are outstanding

in their fields. This is a day not to be missed! An invitation is

on page 3 of this bulletin.

Thank you to Caryl Starobin for opening up her home for

our new and prospective member coffee. This is such a warm,

welcoming environment to learn about the chapter. After each

coffee, we comment to each other that, if we weren’t already

members, we would join Brandeis.

Our study groups are in full swing. Our menu has something

for everyone. Various Community Service Projects are available

and highlighted monthly in the Bulletin. There are many ways

to become involved in our Chapter. I look forward to seeing

you at one of those!

I wish to sit with:

From the PrezHolidays are cause for celebrating historic events.

They are times for relaxing with our families and friends.

Holidays also give us pause for contemplation. At

Thanksgiving, we give thanks for our freedom and good

fortune. Those who observe Chanukkah and Christmas

gain pleasure by remembering one another with gifts.

When we ring in the New Year, we give ourselves the

gift of renewal and rededication by resolving to achieve

something we hadn’t before.

As leaders, you should know giving is good for you!

In the process of giving back, you are helping someone

extremely valuable in your own life — and that is you. The

more articles I read about volunteerism and fund-raising,

the more I understand the feeling of self-worth and how

good it is for our own health, and how important it is for

the health of the Brandeis National Committee.

I wish you a happy, healthy, and peaceful New Year. Plan

ahead for Leadership Training sessions on Wednesday

and Thursday, June 9–10. And plan to stay on for Alumni

College the following day, when Brandeis professors

will lecture on a variety of stimulating topics. Come to

campus to learn valuable leadership skills and be intel-

lectually stimulated.

Marsha Hirsh was born and grew up in Seattle, Washington.

In 1952, while attending the University of Washington, she met

and married Sid Hirsh. Fifty-seven years later, they’re still mar-

ried! After his two years of Army service, they moved to Tucson,

where Sid’s family were owners of Hirsh’s Shoes. Marsha and

Sid had three children: Leslie, Alan, and Jennifer.

As a young mother, Marsha was a Brownie leader, Girl Scout

leader, and Cub Scout den mother. She was also a board mem-

ber and volunteer for the National Council of Jewish Women,

a docent for the Tucson Museum of Art, and a volunteer at

Temple Emanu-El. Her mother-in-law, Rose Hirsh, gave her a

life membership to Brandeis. A close friend, the late Marian

Solot, and Marsha opened a children’s boutique, Grandma’s

Treasures, which they ran for 14 years. Later, Marsha managed

the dance department at Hirsh’s Shoes for five years.

The Hirsh’s oldest child, Leslie, lived in Boulder, Colorado,

and was a nurse. She and John had a son Michael, who is 21

years old. The Hirsh’s son, Alan, and his wife, Sally, have a

16-year-old son, Joey. Alan is a music educator in Winston-

Salem, North Carolina. The Hirsh’s daughter, Jennifer, is a special

needs teacher in Monterey, California. Her partner, Ed, has two

teenage children, so the Hirshes are blessed with four beautiful

grandchildren.

Beside family and friends, Marsha loves the arts, taking classes

in needle weaving, quilting, drawing, and painting. When her

daughter, Leslie, was fighting breast cancer (a battle she lost),

art became Marsha’s therapy.

Marsha’s sister-in-law, Joan Rosenbluth, and Marsha have

cochaired the Brandeis Study Group, The Art Scene, for six

years and are now planning for the 2010–2011 course. They

encourage Brandeis members to join, and even lead, a Study

Group, to meet wonderful people.

Marsha thanks Brandeis. We are grateful to have Marsha as

one of our dearest members.

It is a new year and time to focus on children. There is

a wonderful organization here called Casa de los Niños.

Casa de los Niños offers a variety of programs designed

to prevent child abuse and to care for children who have

been abused. The Crisis Shelter is a safe haven for abused,

neglected, and at-risk children under the age of 12.

You can help these children by volunteering three hours

a week. There are many jobs from which to choose, includ-

ing tutoring, reception, fund-raising, and special projects.

University on Wheels Fascinates AttendeesThis year’s phenomenal University on Wheels, the chapter event featuring a professor from Brandeis University, brought

ecologist Dan Perlman to Tucson. Perlman had a wonderful presentation on the importance of ecology and the ecology in the

Sonoran Desert, our backyard. Special guests included this year’s winner of our endowed scholarship, Luke Teece ’12, who

had graduated from University High; Lorraine Sparrow, from the university’s Development Office; and Gita Bodner, conser-

vation ecologist at the Nature Conservancy in Tucson. Event co-chairs Esme Ferrante and Sara Wisdom and their committee

did an excellent job.

$600,000 Challenge GrantBrandeis University announced the award of a highly competi-

tive $600,000 challenge grant from the National Endowment

for the Humanities (NEH) for innovative programming in the

new Mandel Center for the Humanities. Through fund-raising,

Brandeis will match the NEH grant threefold, a total of $2.4

million, to support interdisciplinary programs and scholarship

in the humanities and social sciences.

The award comes less than one year after the university began

construction on the Mandel Center for the Humanities, a vision-

ary initiative to preserve and strengthen humanistic inquiry, a

critical, yet embattled, area in higher education.

Through its programming, teaching, and research scholarship,

the Mandel Center will integrate interdisciplinary work across

the humanities and the humanistic social sciences. “Brandeis

University’s application was quite strong,” said Stephen Ross,

director of the challenge grant program at NEH. In this quarterly

grant cycle, of 113 challenge-grant applications nationally, only

20 were granted, he said.

Catch-22 at BrandeisThis month marks the ten-year an-

niversary of author Joseph Heller’s

death. Brandeis University’s Robert D.

Farber University Archive and Special

Collections Department has the original

manuscript for his first, and best-known,

novel, Catch-22.

Heller donated the original manu-

script for Catch-22 to the university in

1964, shortly after the book was pub-

lished in 1961. At the time, Catch-22

was ground-breaking for its novel take on war, and the book’s

tone continues to connect with readers today.

Catch-22 never came close to making The New York Times best-seller list, and at first lived precariously as a word-of-mouth

“cult” novel. But as the military intervention in Vietnam gained

momentum, that disaster helped to spawn a counterculture,

and the novel became a phenomenal popular success.

Hello, my name is __________ . May I please speak to the manager?

I am one of over 500 members of the Tucson Chapter of the Brandeis National Commit-tee, a non-alumni support group for Brandeis University, a nonsectarian university located in Waltham, Massachusetts. Through our efforts, we raise money to support the university’s librar-ies and an endowed scholarship for a Tucson-area student who has been accepted to Brandeis University and is eligible for financial aid.

Our major annual fund-raising event is the Book & Author evening gala and luncheon, where we are treated to noted authors discussing their latest works. This year, the Tucson Chapter of Brandeis National Committee is raising money toward an endowed scholarship for a student from the Tucson area who has been accepted to Brandeis University and qualifies for financial assistance.

Our event in February 2010 will feature a printed program for which we are now selling ads. The tax-deductible fees (a donation for individuals, a business expense for businesses) are as follows: $750 for an inside or back cover; a full-page advertisement is $500; half a page is $250; a quarter-page is $125; an eighth-page or business-card-sized ad is $65; a single-line ad is $36; a “Family Treasure” is $10 per name.

Here is a sample of what the ads will look like. In addition, your name and organization or com-pany will appear in our Chapter bulletin, which will be sent to all of our almost 500 members.

All ads must be camera-ready (scannable), or in PDF, JPEG, PNG, or TIFF format. They will be printed in black and white (and gray).

Note: All monies and ads are to be collected by January 31, 2010, prior to submitting the ad to Sandra Rollin, 6661 N. Finisterra Dr., Tucson, Arizona 85750.
