A long time ago Madame de Staël was asked:"- Do you belive in spirits?

- Of course not, said this woman, but I am afraid of them."( E. Reclus, Les croyances populaires)

This movie was accomplished with the support of the Town Hall of Lugoj, the administration of the National College "Coriolan Brediceanu" and the dr.Brazda family, the owners of the Herendesti Palace, in Timis county.

The script of this film is based on an extensive scientific documentation, historical and ethnographic data were provided by the team of experts from the Museum of History and Ethnography Lugoj.

Project Coordinator: Patricia Ghemeş - mayor's personal adviser in cultural heritage, Lugoj.

"The science that studies life after death unanimously recognizes that all those who die were sometimes transformed, according to classical mythology in delicate shades, flimsy and light, as a belief that the world beyond the grave is an extension of the world here.

There are countless stories of haunted houses or palaces, buildings which legend says that at their foundation a person was buried, the shadow of that persons soul turning into a ghost.

Ancestral customs condensed around the idea that every foundation has required animal or human sacrifice alike, across millennia perpetuating until nowadays.

The durability of a sacrifice, according to popular belief, especially human sacrifice - a testimony of the gesture being the subject of the legendary Ballad Master Manole - a tradition that has it's basis from the creation of living people being biult at the foundation of a construction, a recurring motif of universal mythology of all times. "

(Daciana Vuia, curator and specialist in ethnography of the Museum of History Lugoj).

"The Tower of Saint Nicholas in Lugojis the oldest building of the city. It was not put down by earthquakes, nor major fires that have consumed the city or foreign invasions. The date of lifting the tower is 1402 and its durability is outstanding.

A terrible discovery occurred in 1926, when a man working on the foundation where Virgin Mary's icon is placed, came across a skeleton built in the stones. The skull was kept in very good condition and is protected by a coating of lime. A newspaper called "The noise" from April 25, 1926 reported that it was the skull of girls aged 10-12 years, probably a virgin. Let this be a similar sacrifice to that of Ana from Manole's balad and durabilityof the tower is due to it?

Even if it wouldn't be about sacrifice, mysteries multiply. If the place has been a forgotten cemetery of Lugoj, perhaps excavating beneath concrete slabs would unearth ancient tombs more than 1333, the official date of birth of the city! "

(Dr. Razvan Pinca, archaeologist, Director of the Museum of History Lugoj).
