The successful Awardees pictured withPresident Tim and Vocational ServiceDirector Steve Baker.

Thirty nine of us (including Héloïse)assembled at North Parramatta at 7.30amlast Saturday to board the coach headed forthe Garnett Goulburn Getaway. The coolstart to the day should have been a warningfor what was to come. Two hours later wealighted in Goulburn for morning tea andimmediately headed for the luggage lockerof the coach to retrieve all our warmclothing. A bitter wind was blowing and itwas definitely on the fresh!!! side. We weretreated to an unexpected procession of largehonking trucks and motor cycles

whilst we warmed ourselves on the tea andbickies provided by our friendly coach driverRod. (back to camera)

We all then retreated to the warmth of thecoach for the short ride to the old GoulburnBrewery where we were treated to a fascinatingtour and historical commentary from theresident tour guide, part time philosopher, andlicensee, Father Michael O’Halloran.

This was followed by an enjoyable lunch andsampling of some of the local brews prior toagain venturing forth into the cold to board theCoach. Our next stop was the striking GoulburnWar Memorial set high on a windswept hilloverlooking the town.

Whilst braving the elements to view thespectacular view over the town we marvelled atthe hapless bridal party trying to capture theironce-in-a-lifetime moment in a raging gale. The bridal veil was seen being retrieved from atree as we scurried back to the warm coach tohead for our next stop, the historic old houseGarroorigang which has been in the historicalHume family for over 100 years. Part of its lifewas as a somewhat exclusive boy’s school withmany of the artefacts from the era still intact.

The Hume family still live in this grand oldhouse and provided us with a most welcomeafternoon tea.

We reboarded our coach to head for our digsfor the night at the excellent TrappersMotel. Rooms were allocated with theminimum of fuss before retreating for ourfree time prior to our pre-dinner drinks.Dinner was a convivial affair in our owndining room at the motel (see pic on P7)before the party animals amongst us againboarded the coach headed for the GoulburnSoldiers Club to sit in on the eveningsession of the weekend long Irish MusicFestival. The first two acts were entertainingbut the party really livened up when theMcCabe brothers took the stage and goteveryone bouncing. The evening culminatedin a spectacular exhibition of Irish dancingby three very athletic young ladies and onedouble jointed young guy. These four keptus spellbound as they performed theirincredibly strenuous routines. The trip backto the motel kept the local Taxi fleet runningwith our tail enders sneaking in a late nightvisit to the Astor before straggling back.Sunday brought a beautiful day which was afar cry from the cold blustery conditions ofthe previous day. An excellent breakfast wasthe order of the day at 8am beforereboarding our coach to head for the grandold steam driven pump on the banks of theMulwaree River (minus a small group of theladies who chose to shop rather than inspectthe old pump). This was one of the highlights of the tripwith a number of our group taking a forensicinterest in this fascinating piece ofmechanical history which was fully fired upand steaming at full speed.

After our wandering shoppers returned weenjoyed morning tea on the banks of thepicturesque Mulwaree River where weassembled for group photo before heading offto our next stop at the Kingsdale Winery closeto Goulburn.

(See enlarged version on P7).

We were hosted at the small winery by theowners who treated us to a tasting of nine oftheir quite drinkable wines and gave us a veryinteresting inspection of their small winery andseven acre vineyard.

We headed off at around midday for our lunchstop at The Magpie Cafe the delightful village ofBerrima prior to heading home.

Permanent Ponderings

I am still waiting for an enquiry. I will, however, continue my push because it isimportant to the Foundation. The PermanentFund is to Secure Tomorrow. It is Rotary’sendowment. The principal is never spent, and a proportion of the earnings aredirected toward Foundation programs.Donations can be outright gifts, securities, bequests, or life-income agreements. All Iseek is the Bequests, where you can make acontribution to the Foundation. Come andsee me.
