The Vine and Branches: John 15:1-17 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

BLUEPRINT BIBLE LEARNINGDISCUSSION QUESTIONS Discuss these questions together as a family: Ask: Who is the vine? Jesus * Who is the Vinedresser? God the Father * What does the Vinedresser do in this part of the passage? He cuts away the dead branches, the ones that don’t produce any fruit. Say: So Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. We need to show good fruit like peace, love, kindness. . . When we don’t bear any fruit, we get pruned. God reminds us to grow. He nudges us along through our life, encouraging us to produce this fruit. Eventually, branches that don’t produce are clipped away. Ask: What happens when a branch is cut away from a vine or a tree? It withers away and dies. * Does it grow on its own? No. * Does it make another tree or vine? No. Say: We need to be a good vine. We must remain with Jesus (in His love) and allow him to grow good fruit in us. Love your neighbors. Bring peace wherever you go. We must stay connected to Jesus to produce the good fruit God expects of us! ** Complete the Cross Word Puzzle as you discuss.

CEMENT IT IN CONCRETE ACTIVITIESCONSTRUCTION FAIL (ATTACHED) Items Needed: Paper, Pencil/Pen, Construction Fail Pictures Provide each of your children with a piece of paper and a writing utensil. Ask your child to number their paper from 1-6. Direct your children to the “Construction Fail Pictures.” Instruct your children to examine each picture and write the word wise or foolish based on whether the picture shows a wise or a foolish construction choice. Remind them to write their answers on their papers according to the number on the picture. Discuss together: Discuss their response to each picture. Include why they think the builder was wise or foolish. Do they think the builder was “abiding” by the architect’s plan? Lead a discussion on the importance of a strong foundation to be able to build our lives upon. Comment that we are not wise enough or good enough to build that foundation ourselves. We need Jesus! We have to stay close to Jesus! In today’s Bible Passage, we hear an analogy about a vinedresser. This Bible passage is a beautiful picture of what it takes to build a wise and solid foundation for our lives, or to bear good fruit. . . We have to remain in the love of the Father, the true and best architect!

CEMENT IT IN CONCRETE ACTIVITIESFOOLISH OR WISE SITUATIONS (ATTACHED) Items Needed: Two Pieces of Paper or Cardstock to make two signs- One that says FOOLISH and one that says WISE; Foolish and Wise Situations Sheet

Place the Foolish and Wise signs on the walls in your living room opposite each other so your children will be able to move to one or the other sign based on what they think happened in the scenario.

Say: “I am going to read some situations that might happen in real life and when I finish reading each one, you can run to either the foolish sign or the wise sign, depending on what kind of decision you think was made. We will talk about why it was foolish or wise and then you can run back to your seat (the couch/chair) and I will read another one.”

Read the “Foolish/Wise Situations” to your kids.

After reading and discussing the last situation, encourage kids to think about this activity the next time they are faced with a difficult decision. Discuss why it is important to Abide in Jesus, to Remain Close to Him, so that we can be sure that the decisions that we are making are wise!

Discuss together: Read Colossians 3:12-17. What an amazing passage to remind us what it looks like to ABIDE and REMAIN in Christ.

Remind your children that when we are close to Jesus our lives REFLECT JESUS! When we are close to the Vinedresser we will bear good fruit! We are compassionate, kind, humble, forgiving, full of love and joy, peace makers, and what we are choosing to do is going to honor the Lord.

Discuss the verses. Does their life look like that? Jesus wants us to remain close to Him, for Him to be our Strong foundation. He wants to help us grow and bear good fruit!

Nail it Down: Remind your child of Jesus’ promise to be with them and to love them always. Remind your child that Jesus also wants us to stay close to Him, to abide in Him for He has good things in store! Jesus is the true vine, and our ultimate success in life is dependent upon our attachment to Him. When we abide in Jesus and His Word, we are promised that fruit will be produced in our life. When we abide in Jesus and follow His commands, we have the promise of the full joy of Jesus in our life.

Say: Make a commitment to strengthen your attachment to Jesus. Make a decision to obey his commands, study God’s Word, be in contact with other Christian friends, pray, and devote yourself completely to Jesus!

Main Point: Jesus’ love is the foundation for the rest of my life. Pray: Dear God, Help us to remember that you are the true vine, our source of hope, joy, and life. Help us to stay close to you so that our lives are an overflow of being filled with you. Give me strength and wisdom to follow you and obey you when it is hard. Help me remain connected to you. Amen.
