TSX FP ACC8 Optical / Electrical Repeater1 Presentation
1.1 General
The TSX FP ACC8 Optical/Electrical repeater is a FIPWAY/FIPIO cabling component. It is used to interconnect cells (FIPWAY/FIPIO electrical segments) whose ground levelcannot be brought to the same potential, that are more than one kilometer away (andup to 3,5 kilometers away) and/or separated by areas of high electrical interference. The use of these repeaters also allows an increase in the number of devices on thenetwork (up to a maximum of 64 logical connections) and an increase in the length ofthe network up to a maximum of 5 kilometers. The optical/electrical repeater must be supplied from a 24 VDC or 48 VDC source tooperate.A two meter long optical cable (optical jumper), ref. TSX FP JF020, allows the repeaterto be used as an interface between a FIP optical station and a FIPWAY/FIPIO electricalsegment, or for connecting the repeater via a cable mixer enclosure.
The TSX FP ACC8 repeater is "transparent" to higher FIPWAY/FIPIO layers: it doesnot have an address and does not perform filtering or any other processing of theinformation.

2 Use
2.1 Repeaters Between FIPWAY/FIPIO Electrical Segments
Using two TSX FP ACC8 repeaters and an optical segment (two fiber optic cables) willextend the length of the FIPWAY/FIPIO network and increase the number of physicalconnection points on the transmission media (a maximum of 64 connection points canbe logically controlled). Each electrical segment comprising a shielded twisted pair, with a characteristicimpedance of 150 Ohms (TSX FP CAxxx or TSX FP CCxxx cable) is limited to a lengthof 1000 meters (the equivalent of a "trunk cable") and is fitted with an TSX FP ACC7terminator at each end. For more information, refer to the FIPWAY/FIPIO ReferenceManual.

2.3 Network Layout
Using "optical/electrical" and/or "electrical/electrical" repeaters allows setting-up thefollowing network layouts:
• linear , to increase the total network length (up to a maximum of 5 kilometers) and/or the number of connection points (up to a maximum of 64 logical connections),
• tree or star , to cover large areas (measured in tens of acres) and to increase thenumber of connection points (up to a maximum of 64 logical connections),
• mixed , for a compromise between the total network length and the area covered. Thenumber of connection points is also increased (up to a maximum of 64 logicalconnections).
Refer to Section 4 "Characteristics and Performance Levels" to determine the maxi-mum network lengths supported by the complete network.

It is possible to connect 32 stations and 4 repeaters (TSX FP ACC6 and/or ACC8) perelectrical segment. However, the number of repeaters can be increased to a total of 32,on condition that the number of stations on the segment is restricted by the sameamount. E.g., 28 stations, 4 TSX FP ACC6 repeaters and 4 TSX FP ACC8 repeaters.

3 Installation and Set-up
3.1 Installation
The device must be mounted on a metal base (for example a Telequick AM1 PA... base),that is correctly grounded and connected to the installation grounding network (referto the "Recommendations for PLC Installation Wiring" User's Guide - TSXDGKBL).The device is mounted, when open, via two 5.6 mm diameter screws as shown by themounting template below:
It is also possible to use two LA9 D09976 mounting plates, screwed to the back panelof the device when mounting on a DIN standard rail is required.
3.2 Installing the Optical Cable
Optical cable installation must conform to the environment conditions specified bythe manufacturer and especially, mechanical stress levels for flexing and in tractionmust not be exceeded.
It is recommended that the level of optical attenuation on the cables be measuredbefore and after installation . Also ensure that the levels measured remain withinthe limits specified by the manufacturer.
The mechanical and optical limits on the TSX FP JF 020 cable (jumper cable) arerespectively:
• Curve radius : always greater than 5 cm,• Traction force : always less than 100 Newtons (10 kg),• Attenuation : always less than 1 dB at 850 nm.
The installation of ST connectors (from the optical cable or the jumper) on a TSX FP ACC8repeater is performed taking care to not damage the cable and while ensuring that nodust is present that might affect connection quality. The two jumper connectors areidentified by a shroud (one light colored, one dark colored) for determining thecorresponding base to use, also identified by a light colored or dark colored mark onthe board.

Proceed as follows to install the two connectors on the repeater:
1 Unscrew the 4 cover mounting screws and remove the cover.
2 Remove the plastic protection cover from the first base (marked Tx). Remove theexternal part of the corresponding metal wire seal, then remove the cut-off metalwasher and the split plastic seal contained within it. Remove the small plastic diskpresent in the split seal.
3 Slide the outer part of the wire seal, once taken apart (conical part first), over theconnector of the optical cable identified by the dark colored shroud. Then insert theconnector into the fixed part of the wire seal.
4 Remove any protective cover present on the connector end and connect it to thecorresponding base (marked Tx). To do so, ensure that the tab on the connectoris aligned with the slot below the base. While holding the connector (and not theshroud) between thumb and index finger, push it into the base and turn it one quarterof a turn to lock it in place.
5 Place the split plastic seal around the optical cable, with the conical part turnedtowards the repeater, then push it into the fixed part of the cable seal. Follow thesame procedure for the cut-off metal washer, then screw the outer part of the cableseal onto the fixed part. Torque it down to 3 Nm, to ensure that the module is sealedonce it is closed up again. Be sure to not exceed the torque value to avoid damagingthe optical fiber.
6 In the same way, connect the second optical fiber: the connector with the lightcolored shroud, to the base marked Rx.
Remark
The optical cable connecting 2 repeaters can be a single item, or may be formedby placing a maximum of 4 cable segments end to end. It is strongly recommendedthat the same type of fiber be used for these segments and that they be fitted withtype ST connectors (or with connectors of at least equal quality).A maximum of 3 intermediate connections is therefore possible.

3.3-2 Connecting the TSX FP ACC8 Repeater
The various cables are connected using screw terminal blocks. For a DC supply, it ispossible to use any round cable which has two or three 2.5 mm2 conductors. If a shieldedcable is used, the shielding must be connected to the terminal marked with thesymbol s.
The method is as follows :
1 Open the repeater.
2 Prepare the relevant cable glands by cutting seal 2 placed in nut 1. Pass eachcable through a cable gland. If a line terminator is used, perform the same operation. When reassembling, care should be taken to insert all the parts of the cable glandcorrectly.
3 Prepare the cables as described previously.
4 Place a grounding clamp on each mains supply cable (shielded twisted pair). Theposition of the clamp on the cable should take account of how it is fixed in the unit(to the right or left of the cable).
5 Fit the grounding clamps then tighten those cable glands through which a cable hasbeen inserted, taking care to avoid twisting the cable when tightening the cablegland.
6 Tighten each conductor in the screw terminal block observing the pairing andpolarity of the conductors, ie. for mains supply cables : Red (+) / Green (-) and Orange(+) / Black (-). The following wiring diagrams show the different types of connectionwhich are possible : extension or tap link.
7 If a line terminator is used, attach the TSX FP ACC7 using a grounding clamp, tightenthe cable gland, then tighten each conductor in its screw terminal.
8 Replace the cover and attach it.

3.5 Using the Indicators in Normal Operation
RUN LED: this indicator lights as soon as the repeater is powered-up.
or LEDs: when activity is detected on one (and only one) of the two (optical orelectrical segments) connected to the repeater, it will start to send the re-generated datafrom the active segment to the second segment. The LED corresponding to thetransmission direction (electrical to optical or optical to electrical) will then light until theinitially active segment becomes inactive (or until an error is detected). Generally, dataexchanges are performed alternatively in both directions, giving the impression thatthe two and LEDs are always lit. When using a link to a FIP optical station and if the activity is detected as originatingfrom this station, the data is also sent back to the sender station. If the two segments become active simultaneously, the repeater remains in receptionmode only, until one of the two segments ceases to be active.
DEF LED: this indicator lights during normal operation to indicate an error caused by:
• The repeater itself,• An external failure, generally a "talkative" device (one that sends a frame longer that
what is allowed by the FIP standard).
To determine the cause of the error, power-down or disconnect all other devices fromthe FIPWAY/FIPIO network. If the DEF LED remains lit, the repeater is faulty and mustbe returned for repairs. Otherwise, return the various devices to service one by one, starting with the repeaters and in this way seek out the device that caused the errorcondition (the device found to be too "talkative").
