Minister’s ReportHave you noticed that “goodbyes” are harder than “hellos”? Perhaps that’s the reason we read more from the openings of the epistles than we do from the closings. But, as I’m writing this, we are approaching a Sunday on which we will read closing words. Now, like Paul concluding the letter we call Second Corinthians, the time has come for me to write, as he did: “I must say goodbye.” I do that with a deep sense that I carry many of you in my heart and all of you on my shoulders.Because of that, I need to borrow more words from Paul’s farewell. We’ve read together from several translations on Sunday mornings, so here are several renditions of Paul’s goodbye to those he knew, loved, and cared for in Corinth – 2 Corinthians 13.11.

“I must say goodbye. Mend your ways. Encourage one another. Live in harmony and peace.” (The Inclusive Bible)“Be cheerful. Keep things in good repair. Keep your spirits up. Think in harmony. Be agreeable.” (The Message)“Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace;” (NRSV) “Try to get along and live peacefully with each other.” (CEB)

Over the past thirty-four months we’ve worked together on your Interim Goals. While these are “interim” goals they are not time-limited. Rather, most – if not all – of them are on-going. They are not about “arriving” but about “journeying” and more specifically about “how you journey – together.” As a reminder, here are four of those goals.

Page 6: tssuc.comtssuc.com/.../uploads/2017/06/2017-06-18-Annual-Boo… · Web viewtssuc.com

1. Rebuild positive relationships within the congregation.2. Improve lines of communication within the church family.3. Lead the congregation in a re-visioning process to identify who we

are, who we wish to become and how we can get there.4. Develop strategies for conflict resolution within the congregation.

I don’t know how it seems to you; but, to me responding to Paul’s farewell appeal – which I am making my farewell appeal – would moment by moment, meeting by meeting, day by day, decision by decision, allow you to meet those goals and prepare for and make possible your meeting them again and again as you journey together into the future – a future which is at once both uncertain and assured.Paul wrote to a community; but, his appeal required individual responses. Not all will respond at once, or with the same degree of commitment, trust, enthusiasm, patience. But, all must respond even if that response is a refusal to respond. There’s a saying of which I’m particularly fond, “Answers divide; questions unite.” So, let me leave some questions as I begin to take my leave. How will you “encourage” others and “keep your spirits up” – both yours and theirs? How will you work with Council, Trustees, the Worship Team and others to “mend your ways,” “keep things in good repair,” “put things in order”?If and as you’re willing to live with those questions – to ask them and keep asking them – and answer out of your best self then the promise Paul made to the Corinthians will be yours. If you, like them, respond to the appeal then “the God of love and peace will be with you.” God’s love and peace are not with those who passively wait; but with those who actively strive to be part of a community living out that love and peace. Apparently God does not barge in nor is God at home where there is no love and peace.May you, Trinity-St. Stephen’s, strive to live, and journey, in peace and love; may God, and God’s love and peace, find a home in you; and, may your home be forever in that love and that peace. In the fullest and deepest meaning of the word I bid you ‘adieu’ and from the bottom of my heart say “thank you” for the privilege of ministering with you.May the peace and love of God be with us all.Respectfully submitted, Rev. Nigel Weaver, Intentional Interim Minister

Church Council ReportAt the June 2016 Annual Meeting the Congregation of Trinity-St Stephen’s United Church approved a new governance model for a 1 year trial. This model was to be composed of a council consisting of 6 members plus the clergy. We only have 5 members; Kathy Curtis, Jean Smith, Beth Dickinson, Mark Milner, Wayne Bishop and Rev. Nigel Weaver. There is no chairperson. This has been on a rotation basis. We have met twice a month with 1 meeting being a grounding session, where we discussed Bible Scriptures, etc. The second meeting is designated for the business of the church.

This process has been a learning experience for our members with many things to be covered. There are people who are still involved with the previous structure and are still functioning as committees. Each committee member under the new structure has been assigned to keep in contact with these people to understand what is happening in our church. Since we only have a small council, we have set a structure called a Circle of Service Board, where the congregation can express their concerns and ideas. These concerns are addressed by the current structure. The council has been very busy dealing with a number of issues received from the congregation. We have met with the Trustees and M & P to discuss their functions of the church. Some of the issues we have discussed concerning the governance of our church have involved security, membership, tellers/ushers, finances of the church, alcohol use in the building, remits, washrooms, new photocopier and new lighting and electrical for Burgess Hall and the Sanctuary. As this is a 1 year trial, this structure will be revisited at the Annual Congregational Meeting in June 2017. Respectfully submitted, Wayne Bishop, Treasurer

Board of Trustees ReportThe Board had four regular meetings and one special meeting in the 2016-2017 church year. September 27, 2016:

- We were advised by letter that TSSUC had been bequeathed $5,000.00 from the estate of the late Margaret Pauline Gray.

- We were advised that our insurer had made an “offer to settle” in the case of TSSUC v. P. Hebb. Harold Farrow had attended a discovery in the same case.

- It was largely uneventful summer at the Ft. Lawrence Cemetery which is continuing to finance and maintain itself from its investments.

- Ron Wilson attended the meeting on behalf of the Property Committee of Council and reviewed a report dated 24 Sept 2016 outlining eight property issues which needed attention: principal among these was the repair and proper hanging of the main light fixtures in the sanctuary - the necessary work was approved.

- Harold Farrow reported that the total cost of the roofing project to that date was $120,749.41.

- $30,000 was transferred from Investment income to church operations to cover August through November expenses.

- Mark Milner provided a long-term income projection for the Investment Funds. In essence, his report showed that if present low-interest rates continue and givings continue at their present rate, by 2020 the cost of church operations will exceed Endowment Fund interest.

November 30, 2016:- An inspector of our Automated Sprinkler System noted some deficiencies.

Repairs/updating was ordered and an Inspection Certificate was received. - A Fire Inspection Report, dated October 26, 2016 from the Town of Amherst,

ordered upgrading both exit signs and emergency lighting. Our stage curtains needed fire resistance testing and/or treatment or removal.

- Bruce noted that the sanctuary lighting had largely been re-installed and all bulbs replaced.

Page 8: tssuc.comtssuc.com/.../uploads/2017/06/2017-06-18-Annual-Boo… · Web viewtssuc.com

- Roof Replacement - After final costs were totaled and a rebate received from NS Power, the total project costs inclusive of HST were $120,751.20. Half of the HST amount is recoverable. MacBeth Bros. gave us a five year warranty on their work. The shingle manufacturer gave us a fifteen year warranty on their product - “35 year” shingles.

- It was noted that work was required on the old kitchen and the basement washrooms.

- Investments were reviewed in some detail thanks to a report from Blois Hennigar. Gary Wilkie provided a report on our cash situation, expenditures and the resulting recommendations.

March 8, 2017:- Bruce reported that the exit signs and emergency lighting were upgraded as

required, new receptacles were installed in Burgess Hall, fire extinguishers had been inspected and fire retardant had been applied to the stage curtains. (Sprinkler system previously dealt with). We await a new fire inspection report stating that we are in compliance with all fire prevention regulations.

- We received a bequest of $25,000 from the estate of Margaret Smith by way of executor Michael Smith. Our direction was to invest the amount and to use the interest (only) as we saw fit.

- We received a bequest from the estate of Robert John Gray in the amount of $10,000. This amount was not restricted as to use and after consultation with the executor Robert J. Gray, was placed in the Capital Reserve Fund.

- Harold Farrow is in discussion with MacBeth Bros. re: eavestrough issues resulting from the roof replacement.

- We received, with much regret, the resignation of Blois Hennigar who served as chair of the Investment Committee. Blois & Bev are moving to Halifax. Gordon MacGregor also noted his pending retirement from the Board.

- Treasurer Gary Wilkie reported on the states of the various funds and the disbursements and expenditures including $6,940 for insurance.

- It was noted that custodian Terry had completely repainted the old kitchen causing it to be more presentable than it had been for years. As well through a combination of Terry’s efforts and the hiring of a plumber, both basement washrooms had been restored to use.

Special Meeting - Thursday, April 27, 2017:- At this meeting, Harold Farrow updated us on the costs of the new rear

entry, which will include the removal of the existing wooden doors for refurbishing and later installation at the South entrance on Havelock Street, a new automatic opener aluminum and glass entry like the one on Ratchford Street, a new sidewalk, and possibly some sort of railing. Although this could add up to $2,700 to the cost. Our best estimate is that the project will cost at least $12,000 although it could go as high as $15,000, which we will cover with income from the Endowment Funds.

June 5, 2017:- The Board met for the last time before the annual meeting on June 18th. Ian

Naylor and Bruce Baxter agreed to accept reappointment. Harold Farrow will continue as a ‘friend of the Trustees’ and chief property representative; as the congregation has not formally voted to remove the two consecutive term restriction on Trustees, he could not be fully re-appointed. Gordon MacGregor will retire after two consecutive terms.

- Various reports were received and discussed. On the recommendation of Treasurer Gary Wilkie and based on the projections of church treasurer Wayne Bishop, $35,000 was transferred to the General Operating Account to cover monthly operating deficits May-August. $15,000 from the Designated Fund and $20,000 from the General Fund.

- We noted receipt of a bequest in the amount of $5,000 from the estate of Margaret P. Gray unrestricted as to use as was the case in the bequest from her husband R. John Gray, this amount was placed in the Capital Reserve Account.

- It was noted that all the exterior trim on Heartz Hall is badly in need of scraping and painting and some areas of rot will have to be cut out and replaced. A couple of quotes will be sought.

- The replacement of the rear entryway will take place within the next couple of weeks.

Respectfully submitted, Bruce Baxter, Chair of Board of Trustees

Christian Education Committee Report The Christian Education program for our youth this year continued the Godly Play format which we began last year. Sunday school was held twice a month during worship time, with the leadership of Dody Dickinson, Wanda Bickle and Shelley Hallman. Using the Godly Play format of Storyteller and Doorperson, the lessons were presented throughout the year. New story materials were prepared and added to the Godly Play room. On average 7 youth were present for the sessions. In January, our Sunday school class was joined by representatives of Christ Church Anglican’s Christian Education program. They were interested in the Godly Play format and had been invited to observe a session to get a feel for the program. The offer to share resources was also extended. The last session of Sunday school was held on May 7, and an afterschool gathering on May 10 in the Games Room of the church wrapped up the activities for the season.Bible study sessions resumed in September. The resource material, “We Make the Road by Walking” by Brian D. McLaren was used again this year. Bible study has on average 20 committed attendees, who engage in the lively discussions. For the Christmas Eve service this year, the youth of the congregation gathered on Bethlehem Market weekend to have costumed pictures of the Nativity story taken. These were incorporated into the Christmas Eve service in a narrated slide show of the nativity. Our Lenten project this year was to gather donations to help support our local Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) branch. $1620 was realized to be used for the purchase of a Doppler Ultrasound machine. This device is used to assess the Ankle Brachial Index to determine blood flow to the lower extremities. VON was very appreciative of the support of the congregation for this project and for providing equipment to support their care of folks in our community.New books were purchased for the adult library following a book launch event for the “ Three Testaments” and” Four Testaments” by Brian Arthur Brown. A donation from a member of the congregation assisted with the purchase of these materials. Rev. Nigel and Ed Calhoun from First Baptist led a study program

based on these materials in May. These books are available for loan from our Library rack in Heartz Hall. “Fishing Tips: How Curiosity Transformed a Community of Faith” has also been purchased for the library. Members of the former Christian Education Committee along with volunteers staffed the Canteen for the Yard Sale and Bazaar on April 29.Camping sponsorship will be offered again this year to youth and adults wishing to attend camps. $120 per person is provided towards the cost of the camp.Appreciation was expressed to all our volunteers in a variety of programs, for their ongoing support of activities within the congregation. Respectfully submitted, Wanda Bickle, Chair of Christian Education

Outreach Committee ReportWe no longer meet as a formal committee but we informally chat and continue providing “outreach” activities within our church and community.Food Bank – We ensure that our church’s yearly contribution for rental space is submitted to Trustees Committee. Birthday bags are replenished two months at a time, three times a year, for a total of six months each year. Congregation and outreach members volunteer working at the Food Bank and assist with the annual Spring Food Drive and Christmas Food Drive.Coats for Cumberland – Volunteers contribute their time to this project which provides coats and accessories to people in Cumberland County.Project for Homeless Youth – We continue, as need be, to supply and full backpacks and distribute them to various agencies/locations in Cumberland County. Our Daily Bread – We submit a monetary request to Trustees who in turn send a donation to Our Daily Bread Ministries.Coffee Time – We supply the juice, milk, tea, and coffee for coffee time each Sunday. We also we take our turn providing kitchen duty, as designated. United Church Observer – We manage the yearly Observer subscription campaign. Rummage Sale – We continue to provide people support.Souper Sunday – In Fall, 2016, we provided dessert (cookies).Canadian Refugee Families – We continue to provide support, as needed/requested. Respectfully submitted, Shelley Hallman on behalf of the Outreach Committee

Worship Committee ReportThe small worship committee (Jeanne Milner, Rev. Nigel Weaver, Jeff Joudrey, Elaine Bourque) has met when the occasion for decisions and worship planning was necessary. Involving the congregation in the weekly church services is ongoing and well appreciated as the effort to include congregation members is important. The Sunday congregation attendance ranges from 80 to 100 persons

with 130 at special services. Communion has been served on six occasions since the fall of 2016.A January meeting identified the need for a realization around the “authenticity” of the Sunday services that include both the minister’s as well as the music director and choirs involvement. Our church has a long and valued music history and is a very relevant part of the worship services. We hope that a new minister will be willing to participate in a “thoughtful, collaborative and structured style” of worship in our small worshipping community so as to keep the worship experience “authentic”.The feedback regarding the screen services in use since Christmas as been very positive and it is considered although basic, it functions well for the time being. We continue to appreciate the recording of each Sunday service by Ron Bickle very valuable as he further prepares these both on Eastlink and You Tube. Our church has welcomed the First Baptist choir members on several occasions as our mutual partnering together is ongoing. The worship committee has assisted in several baptisms during the past church year. In addition our members are also involved in the “worship team” who assistin the worship services when necessary under the guidance of the minister.Submitted by, Elaine Bourque, Secretary

Annual Presbytery ReportThe Chignecto Presbytery includes United Churches in the Moncton, Riverview, Salisbury, Petitcodiac, Kent County and Sackville areas in New Brunswick along with Amherst and Parrsboro areas of Cumberland County. There are 30 pastoral charges in Chignecto Presbytery. There are 14 presbyteries in Maritime Conference and 91 presbyteries in the United Church in Canada. Each Presbytery has oversight of all Pastoral Charges within its bounds including oversight of all ministers. Judy Jonah and Ron Patterson are the lay representatives from Trinity St Stephens. Nigel is also a representative of Trinity St Stephens as all members of the order of ministry are automatically members of Presbytery. Our Presbytery conducts full day meetings 5 times per year and the next meeting is here at Trinity Stephen’s on June 21st. Committees of Presbytery generally meet in the mornings and the full church court meets in the afternoons. The executive of Presbytery meets monthly. The Chignecto Presbytery has the following committees:

1. Archives2. Christian life and Growth

(Nigel is the Chair)

6. Finance and property (Ron is a member)

The funding of the Presbytery and Conference annual budget comes from congregational assessments, which are determined based on the average of the past three years actual operating costs of the congregation. It is important that congregations do not include capitol costs as this results in an inflated assessment. Trinity St Stephens has the second highest assessment in Chignecto Presbytery. We have found our involvement in Presbytery work to be rewarding as we learn about the work of our wider church and the contributions the United Church of Canada has made to Canadian Society over the years. We welcome questions regarding any concerns you may have with the work of Presbytery. Respectfully Submitted, Ron Patterson and Judy Jonah

Ministry and Personnel Committee Report No report submitted

Intentional Interim Ministry Transition Team (IIMTT) ReportThe IIMTT is approaching the end of its mandate. The committee was formed in November, 2013. Our task was to create a position description for our Intentional Interim Minister, interview and select a candidate to fill the position. Rev. Nigel Weaver came to Trinity-St. Stephen’s United in September 2014 for a three year term, and that term is now almost over. Rev. Nigel has lead the congregation through the IIMT time as we addressed the six goals set by the IIMT team. The six goals were: 1. Build positive relationships within the congregation, 2. Improve lines of communication within our church family, 3. Lead the congregation in a re-visioning process to identify who we are, wish to be, how we get there, 4. Develop strategies for conflict resolution within the congregation, 5. Educate our church family in stewardship i.e. the gifts of the people, 6. Review the governance structure re: the changing demographics. Some goals were accomplished, such as a review of our governance structure, and other goals will always be in progress, such as building positive relationships with the congregation. The IIMTT has completed their final report to be accepted by the congregation. The report will be attached to the JNAC report and used in the search for our next minister.Respectfully submitted, Jennifer Furlong, Chair of IIMTT

Joint Needs Assessment Committee (JNAC) Report Our JNAC started developing a new report on January 26, 2017, using the Chignecto Presbytery Assessment Process of November 2016. Through the use of this process, we compiled information on our Church and activities in point form and made many references to Web sites, such as www.tssuc.com, www.amherst.ca and others. After nine more committee meetings, our JNAC Report was submitted and reviewed by the Pastoral Care Committee on April 19, 2017. Our report was initially approved, but required the completion of the Intentional Interim Committee Report May 20, 2017, and then to be attached as an appendix. Our 11th. and final committee meeting was held on June 8, 2017 to approve minor changes. Our congregation will vote on a total of seven Recommendations in the JNAC Report, dated June 8, 2017, during the Annual Meeting, on June 18, 2017.

Special thanks to our Committee members: Judy, Ivan, Gordon, Margaret, Bruce and Bonnie and from Presbytery: Ruth, Jennifer and Marlene. Erika deserves a huge thanks for all her work on this project.Respectfully submitted, Gary Wilkie, Chair JNAC 2017.

ReGenesis Report While this actual group has not been active in the last 5 years, we, as a congregation, have been doing the work of visioning for our congregation. We discovered during our 2013 JNAC February report that we needed to change from a 2 minister pastoral charge to 1 minister. In July we approved the intentional interim model and our Search Committee began its quest. We were served well by the -2 person but 1 position- team of the Rev.’s Victor and Caroline MacLeod in 2013-14 while that search happened. That journey took some time too but we did fill the position and Nigel Weaver came to lead us though the next 3 years working on a set of goals that had been chosen by the congregation. We are now at the end of the intentional interim and need to consider our next step. The Current JNAC Committee has its report in and soon we will be searching for a minister of some sort to lead us. We also need to continue looking forward and hopefully a visioning process will continue in the time ahead. How we set that up will be decided by the congregation and will need to lead by members interested in being a part of a enthusiastic, vibrant Christian community.

Visitation Committee ReportThe primary purpose of the Pastoral Visitation Committee is to ensure that out Trinity- St. Stephen’s United Church members, who can no longer attend weekly services, are visited by members of our congregation. This will keep them informed of our many church activities, special services, musical events, or just delighting in some light conversation.Approximately fifty members of our church are being visited either in Nursing Home Facilities or in their own homes. The facilities would include: Centennial Villa, Gables, Northumberland Hall, White Birches, High-Crest Nursing Home (Springhill). Bulletins are being delivered by: Mary Dickinson, Lillian Estabrooks, and Shawnie Kinnear. Visitation people...

Director of Music ReportAnother season of music at Trinity-St. Stephen’s has come and gone with a number of highlights worth mentioning. Those faithful folks in the Church Choir, who commit to leading in the Ministry of Music week after week, have had another really busy year. We have welcomed a couple of new members this year and have a solid core of about 22 singers who are committed to weekly rehearsals and Sunday services. This year, rather than a Lessons and Carols Service, it was decided that for each Sunday in Advent we would try to do something musically special. Some Sundays we had a number of anthems, the Trinity Youth Singers sang a service, we had a brass quintet one week, etc. It was a worthwhile project and we will assess in the fall, how we will celebrate Advent of 2017.As part of African Heritage Month in February, we lead a service called “We Shall Overcome” - a hymn festival of spirituals and gospel songs. The service was really well received and we had great support from various people outside the choir as readers and worship leaders. We appreciated your support of this service as it made all the hard work and rehearsals worthwhile. The Trinity Youth Singers underwent a physical and philosophical change this year in that TYS became a Girls’ Choir for young women aged 12-17. After much discussion and their filling out a survey, the girls made it clear to me that some of the activities they wanted to focus on included:

- singing in church- sing repertoire with texts in which they could identify- engage someone (other than me) to do a vocal production workshop- share their music outside TSSUC (perhaps a nursing home or another

church service)We managed to do all of that this season. Although their numbers are small, we have had nine committed young women who meet each Sunday after church to learn about choral music and develop healthy singing instruments. I love working with these kids – they are enthusiastic, fun (and funny!) and have a genuine caring about the music they sing, with each other, with their families and their world. What more could I ask? We do need more numbers but not just warm bodies to fill a seat – I want kids who want to develop as singers in a choral context and will be committed to regular rehearsals. If you know of any girl aged 12-18 who wants to sing with the TYS and is willing to commit to its schedule, please give me their name.Music at Trinity has just completed its most ambitious season yet with the Oliver Jones Trio (November), Rachael MacLean (November), Duo Fortin (February) and Symphony Nova Scotia (March). We are a small, dynamic committee of interested

people who are lead by Chair, Gary Miller and we believe that this series contributes to the musical fabric, both within our church and to the wider community of Amherst and beyond. In closing, I would like to thank the Worship Committee under Chair, Elaine Bourque and offer my sincere appreciation to Rev. Nigel for his continued support of and commitment to the Ministry of Music here at TSSUC. As we all know, Nigel will be ending his term as Intentional Interim Minister at Trinity-St. Stephen’s and we certainly will miss him. His support for the Ministry of Music has not gone unrecognized or under appreciated. Colleagues such as Nigel are rare and his understanding of the importance of music as ministry and working together as a team with the Director of Music have been appreciated beyond measure. I also appreciate Nigel’s understanding (and that of the Council and congregation) that due to other professional responsibilities, I do have to be away from time to time. I do my best to ensure that things will run smoothly in my absence. Finally, I want to thank the members of both choirs for their support and friendship over the last year. It is a pleasure to work with each of you, week by week and I look forward to this new chapter as we move forward in the life of Trinity-St. Stephen’s.Respectfully submitted, Jeff Joudrey, Director of Music

Music at Trinity Committee Report “Music at Trinity” (MAT) is an “outreach” program managed by a small church committee. This on-going initiative has two purposes: to provide quality, varied musical performances not only for the congregation but also for our wider community; in addition, to raise funds for church operations. Committee members are: Gary Miller (Chair); Jennifer Furlong (Secretary); Wanda McSorley (Treasurer); Bruce Baxter and Jeanne Milner. Jeff Joudrey, Music Director, acts as committee advisor.MAT presented four (4) concerts during the 2016-2017 season:

The Oliver Jones Trio presented a jazz concert on Saturday, November 12, 2016.

Rachel MacLean gave an Advent concert on Monday, November 28, 2016. Duo Fortin-Poirier presented a piano recital on Sunday, February 12, 2017. Symphony Nova Scotia performed on Wednesday, April 19, 2017.

In addition to providing outstanding musical performances for our concert-goers, the overall financial success of the above 4 concerts has enabled Music at Trinity to transfer $ 5000. to the funding of church operations. Artists who have presented concerts in our sanctuary invariably comment on the excellent acoustics, the uninterrupted sight lines and the versatility of the loft area. It has been referred to as a “performance gem”.The Committee’s work is now well underway in assembling artists for the 2017-2018 season. More information will be available in late summer.Respectfully submitted, Gary Miller, Chair of Music at Trinity

The committee continued the new format of hosting a yard sale along with the United Church Women’s Rummage sales. These events were held in October 2016 and April 2017. The April event also included a scaled down Bazaar, with a silent Auction, the ever popular canteen and the UCW providing a bake table. $2200 was realized from this event.Bethlehem Market also underwent revisions this year as there were no designated committees in the revised Church Council format. The market included the Nativity Pictures, used Christmas items, staffed by former Outreach committee members; the UCW Bake table and Deborah’s Deals; and a craft table and silent auction. The Committee also provided the turkey soup luncheon as part of the market. $3771 was realized from this project. The committee also catered to several private functions throughout the year. These projects allowed us to meet our budget target of $5000 towards the operation of the church. As always, we depend on our dedicated crew of volunteers to help us out with all of these projects. We could not continue to host these events without this ongoing support from the members of the congregation.Respectfully submitted, Wanda Bickle for the Fundraising Committee, who include, Evelyn Bishop, Gloria Fraser, Shelley Hallman and Jean Thompson.

Friends Unlimited ReportFriends Unlimited consists of a group of people (couples and singles) who meet the last Saturday of each month (except during the summer months) at 6pm for a time of food, fellowship and fun.In 2016/2017, approximately 35 people gathered each evening for a potluck meal in Burgess Hall. Following the meal the tables were cleared for games: Dominoes, ‘Count Your Cards’, Bowling (downstairs), etc. This year it was decided that we (usually 4 people) would take turns in hosting the evening and it has proved quite successful. A coin collection is taken following the meal which purchases the items needed – such as compostable plates for dessert, tea & coffee, etc. We would invite anyone who would like to come out and join us for a great evening of delicious food (potluck) followed by games. You will be most welcome! Contact the Church office or any of our members for more information and/or to confirm dates. Submitted by, Gloria Colborne and Vera Faulkner

Open Circle ReportThis group meets every Thursday afternoon at 1:00pm for dominoes and games of cards. Although most attendees are church members we have and do welcome anyone who wants to join us. Although this is not a fundraiser, a free will donation keeps us supplied with tea, coffee, milk and cheese. Lunch (because there is always lunch!) is provided by those same attendees. Surplus money is used to support various charities but the underlying purpose is to get together and have fun!

Goodtimers The Goodtimers Men’s Group meets the last Wednesday of each month from September until May. The men gather at a local restaurant for a time of fellowship and an enjoyable meal. All men of the congregation are invited to attend by contacting Wayne Bishop so he can notify you where they will be gathering as they rotate restaurants each month. We have approximately 15 men from our church who participate and you only attend at your convenience. Please plan to join us for an evening get together. Respectfully submitted, Wayne Bishop

Amherst Food Assistance Network The Amherst Food Assistance Network is a Christian based organization overseen by a Board of Directors in conjunction with the Amherst Ministerial Association. Two representatives are appointed by each of the founding churches as well as three community representatives. The two representatives from this church report to Church Council. Our representatives attend bi-monthly meetings. This church contributes one month rent for the Food Bank. The Food Bank has two part-time employees. One person stocks shelves and oversees the food distribution. In June 2016 we were able to hire a Coordinator to oversee the day to day running of the Food Bank. This person has also been responsible for computer training for the interviewers which was implemented in May. A student is employed for the summer months to help relieve some of the workers. Two successful food drives were held in October and April. We supply hot and cold beverages for the Food Drives organized by the Y’s men. Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church has approximately 45 willing volunteers who work on rotation to fill our commitment of operating the Food Bank every Monday in February, April, June, August, October and December. Bread pick-up is also part of the daily task. Birthday bags are provided as required along with back-packs for the couch surfers. This Food Bank serves families in Amherst and surrounding areas with food assistance to help meet short term requirements. Year end results for 2016 show the total number of people served as 6921 (adults + children). This is an increase from 2015 of 993 served persons. New families served in 2016 total 135, an increase of 18 families over 2015.Thank you for your continued support of this most necessary project. Respectfully submitted, Evelyn Bishop and Heather Wilkes

Parents ‘n Tots ReportWe had another wonderful year of Parents ‘n Tots which met Friday mornings from 10:00-11:30 a.m. Our great team of volunteers included Ollie Williams, Lyn Estabrooks, Beth Dickinson, Bonnie Wilkie, Kathleen Woodworth, Carol Jolly and Katherine Hatheway. We all thank Terry Lawless for his help setting up and putting away the chairs and larger toys.

Parents ‘n Tots is an unstructured drop-in playgroup open to infants and pre-schoolers and their caregivers. We generally have 20 to 26 children attending and as many adults, including mothers, fathers, grandparents and babysitters. We have different play areas including a kitchen set, tea table, play dough table, an infant mat with smaller toys, and a large open area for ride on toys and running around. We provide a healthy snack and juice to all the children and coffee and tea is available for the adults. The kids are happy to put a loonie or toonie in our piggy back to help cover the cost of food. This year, we were able to make donations to Christmas for Kids and to our church’s Lenten Project to purchase a Doppler machine for V.O.N. Our program has been running for 25 years and continues to offer a relaxed and fun atmosphere for kids to develop personal and physical skills, for new parents to meet other new parents and for newcomers to our town to make friends. So many of our parents tell us how much their kids love coming to Playgroup and we love having them each week. If anyone is interested in volunteering in the fall, please contact Katherine Hatheway at 902-667-3107. And please spread the word about our Playgroup to any young parents or caregivers you know.Respectfully submitted, Katherine Hatheway

United Church Women (UCW) Reports

TABLE OFFICERS: Chignecto Presbyterial Liaison: Another very busy and interesting year has come to a close and I enjoyed all the events I was able to attend. The executive meetings and annual meeting give us all a wonderful chance to be with other women in the Chignecto Presbyterial. I did a program for the “order of the day” on Child Poverty at Presbytery in April; presented a Poverty Doll to our local Member of Parliament, Bill Casey; attended the spring Rally at Cape Jourimain, and although I was not able to attend, I heard that the Rev. Jean Ward gave a wonderful presentation at the UCW retreat at Camp Ta-Wa-Si. The executive meeting in October at Stilesville Visions United was very productive and we are well on the way to making 2017 a great year. Respectfully submitted, Judith A. Jonah

Recording Secretary: During the year 2016, our UCW General held 8 afternoon business meetings with an average attendance of 18 and two social events (June in the evening and December at noon) with an average attendance of 60. We had only one executive meeting. This year we asked each Unit leader or her representative to chair the General meetings on a rotating basis, and this process seemed to work well. The minutes of the General meetings are shared with the executive members, and with General members in an electronic or hard copy fashion as requested. There is also a copy in the red binder in the UCW box in the church office for anyone to read. Many thanks for the help I received with the minutes from Barbara Wood and Gloria Fraser; and to Erika Benjamin, the administrative assistant in the church office. Also thank you to everyone who submitted a written report for the minutes because it made my job much easier. Respectfully submitted, Jean Thompson

Corresponding Secretary: On behalf of the UCW, I have sent and received several cards throughout the year. We have received cards and letters of thanks

for our donations to various organizations and for our continued support of the local church community and beyond. I would like to thank Jean Smith for sending out many messages of sympathy and concern via the computer. Respectfully submitted, Betty Duizer-Logan

UCW GENERAL COMMITTEES: Christian Education Committee: the Christian Education Committee met on a monthly basis from January to June to plan for educational and learning experiences throughout the church year. Bible Study is held weekly on Monday morning with approximately 20 people participating. Sunday School continues to meet twice a month in the Godly Play Room under the leadership of Wanda Bickle and Dodie Dickinson with approximately 7 children in attendance. The Lenten Project was in support of the Cumberland Hospice Society raising $2,280. Four children received support for summer camp. As we are on a trial year with new church governance, committees do not meet on a regular basis. Elaine Bourque and Wanda Bickle presented the early Christmas Eve Service. The children were photographed in early December and the pictures were used during the reading of the Christmas story. This Committee supported the annual church fundraisers held throughout the year. Respectfully submitted, Evelyn Bishop

Letter Writing: Several letters were written on behalf of Amnesty International in 2016 by UCW members. These letters were written in January, April and November to several governments – including our own – to address different human rights issues which were outlined in their periodicals. We expressed our thoughts and requested action regarding the following issues: enforced detentions in jail without trial; forced marriages of young girls; asked for reports on cases of missing students; asked that international law and standards without death penalties be applied; asked that prisoners receive medical treatment and access to lawyers; asked for independent and impartial investigations of so-called crimes; asked that independent monitors have access to all people deprived of their liberty across Syria; asked our government to ensure that appropriated land for resource extraction not violate human rights in Columbia; and asked our government (early in 2016) to maintain its commitment to resettle 25,000 refugees in Canada. Our writers are: Beth Dickinson, Olivia Williams, Lyn Estabrooks, Gloria Colborne, Carlene Patterson and Vera Faulkner. Respectfully submitted, Vera Faulkner

Literature: This year we received 10 subscriptions for the Maritime Conference Newsletter and 32 subscriptions for the Chignecto Presbyterial Newsletter, Now Events We Share. We also had 10 subscriptions to the mission magazine Mandate for a two-year period. I deliver these publications to the subscribers when they come out, and I would like to thank our UCW members for their support. Respectfully submitted, Mary Dickeson

Prayer Shawl Ministry: In 2016 Unit 4 continued our “Shawl Ministry” by presenting 13 shawls to members of our congregation, and of these, 8 were hospitalized or had other health concerns. Two of our UCW members celebrated special birthdays – Melcora Brown her 95th and Molly Allen her 100th. The other 3 shawls were presented following a death of a family member. Since this ministry began on May 23, 2008, we have presented a total of 170 shawls to various people. Respectfully submitted, Mary Dickeson

Outreach: During the year I attended all meetings as they were called until our church governance changed and the committee no longer meets. However, as a need arises the people that used to be on the committee still get together supporting previous projects: couch surfer backpacks, provide supplies for Autumn house; support the local Food Bank, Coats for Cumberland and any other projects that are brought to our attention.Respectfully submitted, Judith A. Press and Publicity: Posters were provided for all UCW fund raising events by Erika Benjamin and we thank her for that. Posters were distributed by me and other UCW members to some of the more popular sites and places that will accept them. Information was also given to the two radio stations. I would also like to thank the secretary, Jean Thompson, whose abbreviated minutes are being sent to the Amherst News for publication.Respectfully submitted, Beth Dickinson

Although we did not provide receptions for all of these members, they included: Millicent Coleman, Diana Elliott, Leona Pedersen, Catherine McKay, Gertrude Smith, Leona Brown, and Margaret Bland. A big “Thank You” goes to all the Units and members for your help in providing the receptions. I greatly appreciate the support you have given me. Respectfully submitted, Gloria Fraser

Supply: I collected and delivered the following: several large bags of pop tabs the sale of which helps with the purchase of wheelchairs; 55 pairs of glasses to the Lions’ Club; card fronts to Maggie’s Place; stamps to the Bible Society (NB Branch) at Crandall University, 33 Gorge Road, Moncton; Campbell soup labels to an elementary school in Tantallon NS (project is no longer active); 230 finger puppets to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre; and bread clips to Truro Presbyterial. On White Gift Sunday the following items were collected and given to the Christmas for Kids Program: 98 pairs of mittens, 21 hats, 1 headband, 10 scarves, 12 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of slippers, and 6 mitten/hat sets. Respectfully submitted, Carol Bennett

SPECIAL COMMITTEES: Amherst Food Assistance Network: Heather Wilkes and Evelyn Bishop continue as TSSUC representatives to the Amherst Food Assistance Network Board. We attend meetings held every second month. This church is responsible for the Food Bank operation on Mondays in February, April, June, August, October and December. Bread has to be picked up on these days as well. We have approximately 35 people working in support of our monthly duties. The Board was able to hire a part-time co-ordinator to carry out the day to day running of the Food Bank. Two successful food drives were organized by the Y’s Men. This church supplies beverages for the workers and looks after the food table for those who have helped with the food drive. The Amherst Food Assistance Network continues to monitor and supply food in an effectively and efficient manner to those seeking assistance. Respectfully submitted, Heather Wilkes and Evelyn Bishop

Christmas Cheer: The Christmas Cheer Committee and the four UCW Units worked through the months of October, November and December collecting boxes, monetary donations and sorting food items for the Christmas boxes. Christ Church was the host for this year. The Salvation Army is no longer able to pay for the margarine, so each church will pay for the amount it needs. A number of men from the congregation picked up the vegetables and fruit from the Feed Nova Scotia truck. Pick-ups for bread, eggs, margarine, oranges, turkeys, and hams were also completed. We were fortunate to have the Fenwick Scouting Movement

bring the food items up from the basement. This year we packed and delivered 78 boxes in Amherst. This included 40 families and 38 single people covering a total of 104 adults and 70 children. There were boxes for 38 single people, 11 boxes covering 2 adults per box, 23 boxes covering families consisting 2 – 4 persons, 5 boxes covering 5 – 6 per household and one box for a family of 10. Our mitten line was blessed with 98 pairs of mittens, 21 hats, 1 headband, 10 scarves, 12 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of slippers and 6 mitten/hat sets for the Christmas for Kids program. A number of UCW members with the help of the congregation looked after and delivered some 60 plants and cards to shut-in members of our congregation. A notice has been placed in the bulletin thanking all those involved. Thank you for all your help and support. A job well done by everyone! Respectfully submitted Marg Archibald, Treasurer and Evelyn Bishop, Chair

Congregational Care Committee: This Committee was formed in 2014 to help members of the congregation enjoy social times together as well as remembering our ill, shut in or in care members. The Committee members are Kathy Curtis, Marina Russell, Jean Smith, Lyn Estabrooks, Betty Duizer-Logan, and Gloria Colborne. The May Muffin Morning on May 14 was enjoyed by about 50 people and it was reported that we had members of other United Church congregations drop in. Rather than buying muffins this time, UCW Unit 1 donated 10 dozen muffins and 2 dozen were donated by committee members. During late June, a couple of our members delivered “thinking of you” cards to our shut ins, sick and in care members. These cards were much appreciated and thank you cards were read at the UCW General meeting. On Saturday, October 1, our next muffin morning called, Muffins, Mugs and Music took place. This event was earmarked to bring back those who have been absent, to reconnect with us. Three dozen muffins were supposed to be donated from each Unit, however many more arrived, so we sold the leftovers the next morning with the proceeds being donated to the defibrillator fund. Although numbers were down a bit, everyone who came stayed until the end of the music at 11:30 am. We met October 25 to update our list of shut ins, sick or in care people, with much appreciated help from the UCW Units. Also appreciated were the donations of extra Christmas cards from Unit members. On November 16, we addressed the cards, and on November 29 we delivered the 60 Christmas cards and poinsettias. Thank you to the extra people from the congregation who came to help us. Plans were discussed to have a muffin morning during mid-winter or mid-summer, in addition to the spring and fall muffin mornings, so more to come on that. We certainly are looking forward to seeing you at our next muffin morning. Anyone interested in joining our Committee, we would love to have you.Respectfully submitted, Kathy Curtis and Gloria Colborne

UNIT REPORTS:

Unit 1: Unit 1 meets monthly on the 3rd Tuesday at 2 pm, except for the months of May, June, July, August and December, usually in the Kimball Lounge. We have 20 members and 3 associate members. The meeting includes the Purpose, a member-led devotion, business and usually a program followed by tea and conversation. Our ladies have worked very hard this year since there are fewer of us to do the many jobs such as: catering to funerals, cooking for bake sales, writing letters for Amnesty International, cleaning the kitchen, working at the rummage sales and helping with the turkey dinner and Christmas Cheer. We are trying to encourage

In January, Unit 3 had their annual meeting at the Loon Onn at 1 pm on a snowy winter day with only 9 members in attendance. Our 3 invited guests were not able to attend due to earlier commitments. The May meeting was held at noon at the Marshlands Inn in Sackville with 10 members present, while the September meeting took place at Gloria Fraser’s cottage at Jackson’s Point with 12 members in attendance. readings, prayers, Bible readings, stories or poems, concerns, business, roll call, minutes, financial reports from the Unit treasurer and Friendship Funds, program and lunch. Those responsible for next month’s duties for worship and lunch are named following the roll call. We sing “Happy Birthday” each month to those celebrating, and we close each meeting with the UCW Closing Prayer or the Mizpah Benediction. This year the overall theme for program was historic women, but we also had a bring and buy auction, and enjoyed a group meal out in June. We donated to and/or worked at the church yard sale bake table, the rummage sales, the Highland Fling booth, the kitchen and communion cleanup, the Bethlehem Market, Christmas Cheer boxes, funeral receptions, the UCW muffin mornings, co-ordinated the take outs and home deliveries for the turkey dinner, and catered to the Maritime Conference Financial Services Committee luncheon. Unit 4 also worked on shut-in visitations and attended the retreat at Camp Ta-Wa-Si. Unit 4 donated to the Alberta Fire Relief Fund. Executive for 2017: Leader Jean Smith, Recording Secretary Carolyn Seaman, Treasurer Evelyn Bishop, Visiting Marina Russell, Social Officer and Prayer Shawl Ministry Mary Dickeson, Supply Officer Carol Bennett, Programs jean Henley, Callers Carol Bennett, Nancy Parlee, and Sandy Burke.Respectfully submitted, Carolyn Seaman, Secretary

Nominating Committee: We sent e-mails or called all members holding a position and many replied that they would continue but there were a few who wished to step down. A “thank you” goes out to all of them for time given to UCW General. We asked those attending General to take word to the Units and ask for volunteers to step up and try one of the secretary positions but there was silence, so that means the slate of officers in not complete at this time. There is no one willing to replace either of the secretaries, to be the social convener or to be a first, second or third vice to begin to rebuild the executive either. Based on our experience with this year’s turkey dinner, we should be considering the options presented to us at the June closing and make a choice to do more, but smaller events.Respectfully submitted, Kathy Curtis and Jean Smith

Tellers ListThe Head Teller will need to:

Contact each of the month’s tellers prior to the first Sunday of the month to see if they will be present or notify you if they cannot be present.

If one of the tellers is going to be absent choose a replacement from the sub list.

Before your month starts, make arrangements to get the teller keys from the office.

Please stay near the back of the sanctuary to offer assistance to the ushers if needed.

In case of an emergency evacuation, all tellers can assist people to nearest exit.

Select 2 tellers to bring the collection forward from the back of the sanctuary.

Going forward, setting the plates down, turning to leave happens during the music.

There are 2 plates on the organ for the choir to be emptied at the end of the service.

Wait until the end of the postlude music before going forward to collect the offering.

Gather up the offering from the front and the teller box from the office. All tellers go to the Kimball Lounge to count and record the offering. The Head Teller will do up the master sheet and complete the deposit. Arrange to have tellers available for special services that fall during your

month.
