King PN # 008 JUNE 2010 Principal s Message Dear King Parents, In order to create an environment that stresses the importance of the California Standards Test (CST) and of doing well on the exam, King held its 1 st Annual CST Video Contest. Students worked in groups to create short videos (no more than 2 minutes long) on test taking tips. King students were highly creative with their entries making judging difficult. First place and winners of $50 Best Buy Gift Cardswent to Lousin Derkhorenian and Hee Jin Michelle Shin and to Christian Lopez and Joseph Lopez. 2 nd place ($30- gift cards) went to Martin Estrada, Brayan Castillo and Joshua Rizzo. The 3 rd place ($20-gift cards) winners were Alineh Garbellini-Ghazarian and Erin Tornoff. The winning videos were shown to all King students during a schoolwide assembly. To create friendly competition among teachers and at the same time provide a constant visual on what good test takers do, teachers participated in a CST Door Decorating Contest. Pictures of the decorated doors are on display in the main hallway. To encourage perfect daily attendance, especially during the CST Testing window, homerooms with perfect attendance will receive a pizza party for their homeroom. It is with your parental support that we achieved the highest attendance percentage so far this school year. Our regular school’s monthly - daily attendance rate was 96% and our Magnet School’s was 98%. This could not have been possible without your parental support. As many of you already know most of our elementary feeder schools will keep their 6 th grade students next school year. In order to provide parents with more options for their children as they enter 6 th grade King MS is: expanding our current Magnet program by approximately 100 students in grades 6 and 7. Congratulations to our new magnet teachers. Ms. Marie Cole – PE, Ms. Linda Harada and Ms. Aileen Rabina–6 th grade. in the process of establishing a new Environmental Studies Magnet for the 2011-2012 school year. This magnet program will be open for all students to apply. We are in the process of meeting with members of the community such as Tree People, Farm Feliz, SEELA and Friends of LA River, who will help King with the development and implementation and this new environmental program. Parents are encouraged to contact me with their thoughts, input, ideas and/or suggestions as we establish this Magnet at King. This school year’s culmination ceremonies will take place, by PLE. On June 17, 2010 King’s Magnet students will culminate at 9:00 a.m. followed by the A-Team at 11:30 a.m. On Friday, June 18, 2010 the Lion’s Pride will hold their culmination ceremony at 9:00 a.m. followed by the Green Team’s ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Please feel free to contact me at 323-644-6700 should you have questions or concerns.
