At fi rst, the idea of reading an entire article
about scrapbooking tools might sound as
much fun as browsing a catalog full of
hammers and drill bits. Think again!
Today’s crafting tools are colorful,
versatile, and often worth their weight
in gold-toned embellishments. From
ATG adhesive guns to Zig pens,
having the right tool for the job
can mean the difference between
creative happiness and misery.
But with all the hardware options
available, how do you know where
to spend your money? We asked our
readers to share the one tool they’d
take along to the proverbial desert
island (equipped, of course, with a
thatched-roof scrapbooking hut) and
to explain how this indispensable implement
makes their layouts shine. Read on to see their
choices. Maybe you’ll discover a new can’t-live-
without-it tool of your own!

Time-Saving Tools • CREATING KEEPSAKES 3
Trusty tools are dependable.I’m an impatient scrapper. The last thing I want is
to waste my precious scrapping time fi ddling with
fussy products or temperamental tools. So when it
comes to placing brads, setting eyelets, or poking
holes for hand stitching, I reach for my trusty paper
piercer and foam mat. I can place holes anywhere on
my page quickly and precisely. No, it’s not fancy, but
who wants fancy? I want reliable!

Trusty tools are thrifty.Smart shoppers know the initial purchase price
doesn’t always tell the whole story. Celeste swears
by her ATG adhesive gun, originally created for
the picture framing market and readily embraced
by scrapbookers everywhere. Despite its bulky
size (and comparatively bulky price tag), the ATG
gun is a lesson in volume discount. “I use the gun
on all my pages,” Celeste says. “It provides a great
sticky bead of adhesive, and the cost of the rolls
of adhesive cannot be beat.”

Trusty tools are fun.Forget plain-Jane grey and boring beige! Today’s
scrapbooking tools run the gamut from cute to
downright adorable! The Bo-Bunny fl ex ruler is a
great example of how you don’t have to sacrifi ce
function for style. If its bubblegum pink color
doesn’t immediately tickle your fancy, its ability
to easily create spirals, curves, and waves will
have you saying, “You had me at ‘Nemo.’ ”

Trusty tools are timeless.Remember those Jackie O. glasses your mom tossed a
few decades ago? And the perfectly broken-in Levis you
wish you’d kept from your college days? Just as with all
things fashionable, scrapbooking trends come in and
out of favor. The good news is, if you keep something
around long enough, it’ll make its way back to the “latest
and greatest” list. Reyanna tries to fi nd a way to use her
Fiskars decorative-edge scissors on almost every layout.
Here she added a postage-stamp edge to her photo mat.
“A few years ago, when they were really ‘in,’ I didn’t use
them,” she admits. “Now, I can’t scrap without them!”

Trusty tools are basic.Like a little black dress, the most-used
item in a scrapper’s toolbox is often the
most basic. Sure, maybe your go-
with-anything circle punch isn’t
hip, but it sure is useful! “My
2-inch Marvy Uchida circle
punch is something I
reach for over and over
again,” says Sonja. By
varying the paper and
the placement of your
circles, you can create an
endless variety of looks, making even
this old workhorse cutting-edge.

Trusty tools are versatile.Looking for a budget-conscious, creative
way to add titles and text to your pages?
Forget about saving your pennies for a
large-format printer, and take a tip from
Andrea: pull out your letter stamps!
More versatile than letter stickers and
rub-ons, stamps are portable and can go
anywhere on a page—in any size or color.
“I love that they are a cute alternative to
handwriting,” adds Andrea, who turns to
this handy little stamp set from EK Success
on layout after layout.

Trusty tools are trendy. The terms “trusty” and “trendy” may not always
go hand-in-hand, but they certainly do with this
adorable threading-water border punch from
Fiskars. Kristina is head-over-heels for this fresh
take on a classic motif. “It’s so fun to use!” she says.
“I’ve created multiple layouts with it. It’s a very
simple thing to do, and I think it adds lots of visual
interest to the layout.”

Trusty tools are sound investments.Everyone loves a bargain, but sometimes you have
to spend a little more money to get the functionality
you want. The key is to think of big purchases as
investments—ones that will pay off in the long run
as you turn to them time and time again. Tracey’s
Wishblade electronic die-cutting machine has
already earned back its purchase price. Tracey loves
the way she can cut just the letters she needs in the
fonts and sizes she desires. “It’s easy to fall in love
with a machine that is so simple to use,” she says.

CIRCLE CUTTERS
8 creatingkeepsakes.com
’Round and ’Round They GoHere are three more cutting systems to try!
Custom Cutting System
and Circle Patterns
creativememories.com
Creative Memories’ Custom Cutting
System includes a self-healing mat and
three ergonomically friendly blades that
cut shapes of varying sizes. When
combined with the Circle Patterns
templates (pictured above), the blades
can cut 18 different circle sizes.
Coluzzle Nested Circle,
Swivel Knife, and Cutting Mat
provocraft.com
Provo Craft’s Coluzzle cutting templates
provide multiple size options in very
little space. The Nested Circle includes
eight concentric outlines that make
cutting rings of varying widths a snap.
For best results, use with a Coluzzle
cutting mat and swivel knife.
Circle Scissor Plus
Cutting Tool
eksuccess.com
EK Success’s Circle Scissor Plus
includes a large circular base and
a swiveling cutting handle. The
central ruler allows for incremental
size adjustments between 1 and
6 inches. Note: This tool works best
when used on a glass mat.

Mix and match circles of several sizes to
create an exciting photo backdrop. Using her
Creative Memories circle cutter, Elizabeth
quickly cut out rings and circles in sizes
ranging from 1 to 6½ inches. She moved the
pieces around until she achieved the playful
look she was going for ; then she plopped her
photos on top. Sticking to her circular motif,
she added a few round phrase stickers, brads,
and buttons to complete her design.

4 FAST CROP-A-DILE SOLUTIONS
With its careful design, gotta-have features,
and noiseless functionality, the Crop-A-Dile is a
scrapbooking dynamo. Boost its performance with the
following tips:
Q For the smoothest operation, press on the tool’s
hump or directly behind the hump.
W If you need help reading the tool’s numbers and
letters, highlight them with a metallic leafing pen.
This worked wonders for a gal named Tina, who
shared her tip in an online forum.
E If you accidentally press too hard while dry
embossing a dot, repeat the process on another
piece of paper. Follow Diane Ouellette’s lead and
carefully glue the new dry-embossed piece in place
on the back of your page.
R The next time you need to punch several holes
in a row, move up the metal pieces below the 1⁄8"
and 3⁄16" dials. Rest your item on the lifted lever and
punch away.
The revolutionary Crop-A-Dile from We R Memory Keepers has made hole punching and eyelet setting a cinch for the busy scrapbooker. With this all-in-one tool, crafters can punch through materials thick and thin and effortlessly set eyelets, snaps, and other metal embellishments.
The following features also make this sanity-saver a scrapbooker’s best friend:
• Complete tasks quickly and quietly. Banging and pounding are now distant memories!
• Punch ⅛" and ⁄₁₆" holes and set ⅛" and ⁄₁₆" eyelets.
• Punch through paper, leather, plastic, metal, chipboard, acrylic, fabric, and wood.
• Space holes at consistent distances with the help of locking sliders on the punches.
• View punch position through a window in the hole-punch arm.
• Tote the compact tool to crops for on-the-go assistance.

and have fun arranging and rearranging them into different shapes and
designs. Then set your favorites on your pages.
Big Bite We R Memory Keepers
Take a Bite Out of DesignDespite what the uninitiated may say, the Big Bite from We R Memory Keepers does so much more than just punch holes. Besides being able to chew through various surfaces (paper, chipboard, fabric, leather, thin metal), it also sets eyelets, snaps, and grommets with ease. But, as any 12 x 12 scrapbooking enthusiast will tell you, possibly its greatest feature is its ability to reach all the way to the center of a 12 x 12 page—not something you can do with just any hole punch. But don’t take my word for it. These three talented designers will show you just what this fantastic tool can do.

With the hands-on control paint dabbers offer, Tina was able to brush a one-of-a-kind frame onto her layout in seconds, using a color that complements the cute photo. And best of all, there was no mess to clean up!

TIP: The next time you find yourself reaching for a pen or marker to draw a
colorful frame or border, try a paint dabber instead. They’re simple to maneuver,
which makes drawing and doodling a breeze.
Adirondack Paint Dabbers Ranger
Dab Me HappyLeave your brushes in the drawer, and forget about any messy clean-up. Adirondack Paint Dabbers from Ranger offer the colorful benefi ts of painting without the hassle. As the name suggests, each paint bottle has a built-in applicator, allowing you to apply paint directly from the bottle to the page—which is exactly what the following three designers did to create these imaginative designs.

Nicole used paint dabbers in fi ve different ways on this fresh layout: to distress the edges of her photo and a clear acrylic heart, to add two-tone color to white vintage buttons, to colorize her journaling strips, to transform a plain white paper frill into a colorful border accent, and to ink the “faq” stamp that appears in the lower-right corner of her photo.

To create the base for this adorable cupcake accent, Mi’Chelle ran her kraft-colored cardstock through a paper crimper to give it a realistic cupcake-liner look. She added the ric rac and “frosting” details last.

TIP: Think of shapes that are naturally textured or wavy, and use a
paper crimper to replicate those looks. Think about water, potato
chips, window blinds, or even pickles.
Paper Crimper Fiskars
Crimp Your StyleWho knew a paper crimper had so much creative potential? Well, the three designers of these layouts certainly did. See how they’ve used the Paper Crimper from Fiskars to create decorative accents, add texture to die cuts, and mat a journaling block. What next? Crimped hair? (Note: Do not attempt to crimp your hair with this tool. Some may say that this hairstyle is coming back into fashion, but this is not the tool for the job!)

Give your journaling a decorative lift by matting it on a crimped piece of paper, as Deanna has on this example. For added interest, she brushed white paint around the edges of her wavy pink paper, emphasizing its texture.

By crimping basic shapes (circles and a heart) die cut from patterned paper and cardstock, Tia created a whimsical winter wonderland, complete with an adorable pink bubble tree.
m a t e r i a l s paper crimper (Fiskars) • patterned papers (Scenic Route, Luxe Designs, Making Memories, Chatterbox) • letter stickers (American Crafts) • ribbon (Autumn Leaves, unknown) • stamping ink • staples • 12 x 12 page by Tia Bennett, Puyallup, WA
TIP: When layering crimped shapes on top
of one another, it’s perfectly okay for the
crimped lines to run in slightly different
directions. It adds to the fun.
TIP: Use this crimped-mat technique
to pop up a focal-point photo, helping it
stand out from the background. This is a
fun way to use up cardstock scraps!
