Our markets
e2v is globally recognised for more than 65 years of commitment and technological breakthroughs to the most demanding of professional markets.
As a part of our strategic plan for growth we are expanding our facilities in the US and Asia
Geographic focus
To deliver geographic expansion in the US we established e2v aerospace & defense, inc. incorporating the QP Semiconductor business. It has the necessary US security clearances to supply and deliver all e2v products and services into the US aerospace and defence market, projects for which include our ongoing work with BAE Systems against the AN/ALE-55(V) fibre optic towed decoy system for use on the US Navy F/A-18E/F aircraft and with Ball Aerospace for defence imaging
projects. We have relocated into a new larger facility in Milpitas, which provides secure wafer storage, hi-reliability semiconductor assembly and test facilities and capacity for the expansion of our US RF power and imaging businesses.
In Asia our focus has been to increase our footprint in the region to better support our customers from a local base. In China our facility has achieved ISO9002 certification and commenced
production of thermal imaging cameras for the regional markets. We have expanded our sales and technical teams in Korea, Japan and China, supporting new product introductions, particularly those targeted at medical and industrial markets, and the international space business. We also operate an international purchasing office from Taiwan.

Our global operations
e2v has operational facilities in Europe, the US and Asia. Sales, service and technical support to a total of more than 50 countries across established and emerging markets are provided through four sales and support territory offices and field application engineers.
Developing critical technology with the European Space Agency
As part of a programme to develop critical electronic component technology in support of European Space Agency (ESA) programmes, ESA has funded research and development of innovative high performance semiconductor technology and the associated assembly and test capability. Under this programme e2v won funding to develop high reliability and high speed data converters capable of operating in the harshest of space environments, powering satellite communication systems handling up to 10,000 fully encrypted broadband lines and to the levels of reliability required to ensure decades of operation.
Our high reliability data converters enable breakthroughs in the accuracy of radar based earth observation. Space borne 3D radar imaging solutions built with e2v data converters can reach higher levels of performance, enabling satellite systems to better predict natural disasters and improving the accuracy of 3D mapping.
e2v has also supplied imaging devices to more than 150 space-based instruments, including major science observatories, planetary exploration missions and Earth observation systems for the world’s leading space agencies.

To ensure that we develop and nurture the key skills required to deliver our customers’ projects to the highest of standards, we have a broad-based training programme including:
l Apprentice and graduate training schemes
l Ongoing training and development courses for existing employees
l Commitment to the STEMNET (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network) initiative. 40 employees act as STEM ambassadors to schools and colleges to work with young people and develop the next generation of engineers
l In support of our research and development programmes, e2v maintains strong relationships with research centres and universities; examples of which include Institute EURECOM, the Centre for Industrial Microwave Processing (CIMP) in collaboration with the University of Nottingham, the Centre for Electronic Imaging (CEI) in collaboration with the Open University and Université d’Avignon, where a range of research projects are jointly undertaken
ProWave™ mineral recovery system
Case Study
In October 2012 we announced the signing of a development agreement with Rio Tinto, covering the design and supply of large-scale ProWave microwave and radio frequency generators for use in projects to improve the efficiency of mineral recovery. The agreement followed on from the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and forms a framework under which e2v will scale up microwave generation to the scale required by Rio Tinto. Successful completion of the development phase, anticipated at 2 years, could then lead to the supply of mine-ready microwave equipment.
ProWave uses industrial scale microwave technology to reduce energy usage and increase yields in the processing of bulk materials across a range of industries, building on our expertise in microwave and RF sources and power supplies for radar and radiotherapy markets. Operating at a fraction of the power consumption of traditional fossil-fuelled systems and in a more environmentally sensitive way. We are delivering transformational economics to the industrial processing marketplace.

We also ensure that our facilities meet globally recognised quality standards through ISO9001:2008, OHSAS18001 Health & Safety and Environmental Management System (EMS)ISO14001:2004 accreditations. Noting that compliance with legislative requirements is regarded as a minimum standard, with the aim being to deliver much more.
Sustainability and responsibility
Building e2v’s skills pipeline
Alongside global graduate and internship programmes, apprenticeships have, for decades, formed an integral part of our skills planning. In celebration of their achievements we hold an annual awards night, where apprentices and their families are joined by senior representatives from Havering College, e2v managers and former apprentices who have secured permanent roles within the company.
Our graduates and apprentices are also members of our 40 strong Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network (STEM) ambassador team, going into schools to encourage young people into high technology engineering careers.
Global charity action
e2v makes charitable donations, both direct and via the e2v foundation, a long term fund supporting good causes and charitable organisations. Since being set up in 2007 the e2v foundation has supported 18 local charitable causes, with £25,000 in donations.
e2v’s charity committee seeks to encourage active participation by our people in charitable causes close to their hearts, making around 50 financial contributions a year, and supporting core charities around the world associated with our facilities.
We were able to supply surplus computers, electronic equipment and ¤500 to Solidarité Enfance, a charity close to our Grenoble, France facility which supports vocational training helping disadvantaged young people train for a career.
The e2v New York team participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Manhattanville College. Walking 5 miles, our people raised $1500.
Making great use of our facilities over a weekend, we also host the annual Farleigh Hospice Walk for Life fundraising event, where approximately 1,500 people use our Chelmsford car park and site as a base and finish area, where walkers can relax and enjoy refreshments and entertainment.
A questionnaire is also sent to all employees to ask about the support we provide so that we might make best use of our ability to help and support them.
