2013 Education InitiativesKLRN’s Education Department exists to creatively engage

and inspire lifelong learning.

KLRN was recognized by the San Antonio Association for the Education of Young Children as the 2013 Community Leader of the Year. The station

received the honor for its early childhood initiatives.

In 2013, KLRN continued to grow and lead strong early childhood programs for children birth to age 5, through their families, and formal caregivers. The station delivers community-based family strengthening services that prepare children to enter school ready to learn and prepared to succeed.

KLRN believes there is power in sharing experiences, information and ideas. When caregivers learn more about child development, they learn how to promote literacy and school readiness through everyday opportunities.

This year, KLRN served over 2,150 adults and children at 260 enrichment activities. Enrichment activities, like Play & Learn, teach adults practical

strategies to support children’s holistic development and explore

the borderless classroom. As we build engaging experiences, adults learn

more about their role as a teacher, advocate, and nutritionist resulting in stronger, healthier families.

As a partner in education, KLRN is committed to strengthening the quality of child care throughout San Antonio. The station delivered

free professional development opportunities for formal caregivers via Training Through Television, Little Bites, Big Steps and Super STEAM Saturday Trainings (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math).

KLRN engages caregivers, offers support, and encourages their professional development. More than 430 teachers, center directors, and center nutritionists earned 1500+ training hours this year. Early education providers returned to their sites empowered and prepared to create stimulating, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate experiences for children in their care.

KLRN’s Healthy Kids Project supports healthy lifestyles by influencing eating decisions and

physical activities as we share media resources and lesson plans with educators.

As children’s dietary behaviors are formed early, it is important that they take ownership of their personal eating and fitness habits.

In Spring 2013, Harlandale ISD and Edgewood ISD signed a Memorandum of Understanding to participate in the school based phase of Healthy Kids.

“I have become a better teacher for them.

When I began, I didn’t have a clue how I could help

them learn more. Now I have the tools and knowledge to steer my boys in the right

direction. I am truly grateful for this experience.”

KLRN believes it is important to nurture a student’s natural curiosity and to support their interests by involving collaborative, tactile learning,

setting girls on the “science fast track” toward improved critical thinking skills, enhanced problem solving abilities, and a successful career in science.

198 girls have registered for free membership and exclusive invitations to meet-ups.

KLRN knows creative, interactive experiences engages students and inspires teachers. As school budgets are becoming leaner many campuses are eliminating field trips. By delivering the Dinosaur

George-Museum in the Classroom on campus, KLRN cultivates a collective activity for students, faculty, and families.

From October 2012-September 2013, 31,785 children and 6,020 adults attended via 27 school visits.
