Over 2,500 years ago, Isaiah spoke and wrote vital
messages to the nation of Israel as he served in the king’s
court in Jerusalem. The fundamental theme of the book is
salvation, and he shares that people can count on God’s
promise to restore and deliver them. The book of Isaiah
tells the story of this restoration and salvation.
The first 39 chapters of Isaiah deal with the law
and government, as well as the shortcomings of God’s
people. However, compassion and love are introduced
from chapter 40 on. Isaiah 58 is a perfect example of the
prophet informing the Israelites that they are not acting
correctly, how God wants them to live and the promises of
God if they do what He asks.
Let’s study Isaiah 58 in three parts to help us focus on
what honors God and to explore the wonderful promises
that follow our acts of faithfulness.

so justice is far from us,
and righteousness does not reach us.
We look for light, but all is darkness;
for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows.
Like the blind we grope along the wall,
feeling our way like people without eyes.
at midday we stumble as if it were twilight;
among the strong, we are like the dead.
We all growl like bears;
we moan mournfully like doves.
We look for justice, but find none;
for deliverance, but it is far away.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your
whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your
whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is
darkness, how great is that darkness!”
John Climacus, a seventh-century Christian monk wrote, “pride is poverty of the soul, which imagines itself to be rich, and being in darkness, thinks it has light.”

Over 2,500 years ago, Isaiah spoke and wrote important,
vital messages to the nation of Israel as he served in the
king’s court in Jerusalem. The fundamental theme of the
book is salvation, and he shares that people can count on
God’s promise to restore and deliver them. The book of
Isaiah tells the story of this restoration and salvation.
Let’s study Isaiah 58 in three parts to help us focus on
what honors God and to explore the wonderful promises
that follow our acts of faithfulness.
part
1
While Isaiah 58 is a great place to start to understand God’s
heart for the poor, the rest of scripture can expand our
knowledge of how to look at money, charity, service and
Jesus’ own love for the poor. Continue on for the following
three weeks to learn from the book of proverbs, the
gospels and other prophets like Isaiah!
