Thompson Rivers University WolfPack

The WolfPack begins another BC Intercollegiate Hockey League season with a lot of new faces. There are only 10 players who helped Thompson Rivers to a third place finish in the BCIHL in 2012-13 back for the start of this campaign.

Four of them are on the blue line including second year players: Blake Moynes (Burlington, ON) Ben Bula (Kamloops, BC) and Scott Bollefer (Lake Lenore, SK) along with third year forward Travis Herlein (Calgary, AB) who is being converted to defense.

Up front: Jake Howardson (Pitt Meadows, BC), ), Anthony Delong (Castlegar, BC).Josh MacDonald (Calgary, AB) along with Duncan Schulz and Tyler Jackson ( both Kamloops, BC) will be expected to produce more offense.

General Manager Chris Hans and head coach Don Schulz did a lot of recruiting in the Pacific International Junior Hockey, Kootenay International Junior Hockey and BC Hockey League, and feel they have improved the team at every position.

They also received two transfers from BCIHL champion Selkirk College, Stephen Wolff (Logan Lake, BC) and Brodie Gibbon (Parksville, BC).

Wolff will be one of three new faces in the TRU goal this year along with Mark Menicucci(Surrey, BC) and Chris Solecki (Burns Lake, BC). Menicucci backstopped the Aldergrove Kodiaks (PJHL) last season while Solecki played with the KIJHL Fernie Ghost riders.

Menicucci is one of three WolfPack recruits moving to the Interior from Aldergrove. The others are Daniel Higgs (Langley, BC) and Ryan Veillet . The ‘Pack also has two players who were teammates with the PJHL Delta Hawks: Ryan Cuthbert (Richmond, BC) and Alex Martin (Cloverdale, BC) .

And they have two former Nelson Maple Leafs (KIJHL) in Cameron Weir (New Westminster,BC) and Colton Schell (New Westminster, BC).

Former BC Hockey League players now wearing the orange, black and white of Thompson Rivers are Sean Maktaak (Penticton BC-Merritt Centennials), Richard Vanderhoek (Langley,BC-Cowichan Capitals), Tyler Berkholtz (Penticton, BC-Trail Smoke Eaters) and Silvan Harper (Coquitlam, BC-Merritt Centennials).

Schulz will have Kevin Johnston back as his primary assistant coach this season along with former captain Andrew Fisher. Steve Blundell has moved upstairs to assume the role of Assistant General Manager.

TRU WolfPack Coaching Staff

Assistant Coach Andrew Fisher Andrew is starting his first year as an assistant. He played three seasons with the WolfPack (2009-12). He was the winner of the TRU Athletics Sports Task Force Athlete of the Year in his final year of eligibility(2011-12). Andrew was a BCIHL all-star that year as well. He is a graduate of the TRU Police and Justice program.

Head Coach Don Schulz Schulz became the WolfPack’s third head coach in as many years in June 2011. He played with and was assistant coach for the Cariboo College Chiefs in the 1980s. The Chiefs competed in the CCAA Nationals four years in a row. He also led the Kamloops Jardine’s “AAA” Bantam Blazers to a successful season in 2010-11, including winning the prestigious Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament. This is his third season behind the bench of the WolfPack.

Assistant Coach Kevin JohnstonKevin is entering his second year as an assistant coach with the Wolf Pack hockey

team. A coaching product from the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association, Kevin Coached 15 years at various levels as a head and assistant coach. His playing career

included Junior hockey in Ontario and CIAU hockey in the Western Conference with University of British Columbia (after head coach Don Schulz). Kevin is a

Forester and continues to work in the forestry profession.

Assistant CoachAndrew is starting his first year as an assistant. He played three seasons with the WolfPack (2009-12). He was the winner of the TRU Athletics Sports Task Force Athlete of the Year in his final year of eligibility(2011-12). Andrew was a BCIHL all-star that year as well. He is a graduate of the TRU Police and Justice program.

Assistant Coach Terry BangenTerry has a long and storied past with the TRU hockey program. He was the former

head coach and assistant athletic director of Cariboo College and the University College of the Cariboo in the 1980s and early 1990s. He is a former assistant coach of the WHL

Kamloops Blazers, the NHL Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers. In recent years, he was the Director of Player Development with the WHL Tri Cities Americans.

Don Schulz was one of his scouts. Terry still does some work with the Americans.

Assistant Conditioning Coach Shane Mainprize

2013-14 is the first for Shane in this capacity. He was one of the WolfPack goaltenders for two seasons (2011-13). He is a former BCHL goalie with the Merritt Centennials

and grew up in Valemount, BC.

This is Kohorst’s second year as goalie coach. He is the owner/operator of

Pro Active Goaltending.

Strength & Conditioning Coach Greg Kozoris

This is Kozoris’ fifth year with the ‘Pack. He is a former college goalie who owns the

Acceleration High Performance Program in Kamloops. He currently works with a

number of NHL players including Phoenix Coyotes Captain Shane Doan.

General Manager Chris HansHans has been with the WolfPack hockey program since its inception. He was the team’s first coach in 2009-10, before moving into a director’s role with the

Kamloops Collegiate Hockey Society. He returned last season as the general manager. He has coached many different levels of hockey

including professionally overseas.

Assistant General Manager Steve BlundellBlundell joined the WolfPack in September 2012. He is taking an assistant general manager’s position this season. Steve has 18 years of coaching experience with the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association from Initiation “C” to Midget “AAA.” Blundell coached with WolfPack head coach Don Schulz in Bantam “B” hockey in 2004. He is an employee with Tolko Industries.

Stephen transferred to Thompson Rivers this summer along with former Selkirk Saints Brodie Gibbon. Stephen grew up in nearby Logan Lake but his parents moved to Qualicum Beach, BC. He appeared in six games last year with the BCIHL Champs and won all six with a goals against average of 2.62 and had a save percentage of .913. Stephen credits his parents for being his biggest influences because they did so much for him during his life and worked hard for him to get where he is today. He loves to read and enjoys golf. His favorite movie is Black Hawk Down because he likes war films. His favorite food is chicken. Stephen’s greatest sports moments are either winning a bronze medal at the Cyclone Taylor Cup in Junior “B” or winning the BCIHL in 2012-13 with Selkirk.

Sean committed to the WolfPack in May 2012 after finishing his junior “A” career with the BCHL Merritt Centennials (eight goals, 25 assists in the regular season and three points in the playoffs with 66 penalty minutes). He was named the Centennials Most Gentlemanly Player last season. Sean plays competitive lacrosse for the South Okanagan Heat in the off season. His biggest influence in life is his father and he says “If I work half as hard as he did his whole life, I will be successful.” Sean loves pulled pork and his fondest moment was winning the 2010 Challenge Cup. He played minor or junior hockey with current teammates Brandon Watson and Cameron Weir. His favorite movie of late was Ironman 3.

Alex played Junior “B” hockey last season with WolfPack teammate Ryan Cuthbert for the Delta Ice Hawks. He was with the Hawks team which won the 2011-12 PJHL championship and was named his team’s best defenseman the past three years. In 2012-13, Alex had six goals and 23 assists and 78 minutes in penalty time. He has a criminology diploma from Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Alex wants to be a police officer in the future. He enjoys all outdoor activities. Alex loves pasta and his favorite movie is Shawshank Redemption. His greatest sports moment to date was winning the BC Juvenile hockey title with his brother’s team when he was 17. His pre-game routine includes a meal and a nap.

Scott appeared in 24 games last season scoring once and adding seven assists. He had eight minutes in penalty time. He was a two-time winner of the Nipawin Hawks (SJHL) Community Service Award and Best Defensive Player of the Year (2010-12). He had only eight assists in his final season with Nipawin due to a compound fracture in his left arm. He says his last season with Nipawin (2011-12) was the most fun he has ever had playing any sport. Scott would like to graduate with a degree and then become an RCMP officer in the K-9 Unit. He enjoys reading, video games, hunting and sports.

Silvan committed to the WolfPack in late August 2013. He had 16 goals and 20 assists in 58 games in 2012-13 with the BCHL Merritt Centennials. He holds the Centennial all-time record for games played and was the Centennial’s Playoff MVP last season. His father Scott is his biggest influence “His drive and desire for what he wants is something I have always wanted to replicate” Silvan says, and “It has brought me to the places in hockey I have been.” Silvan taught himself how to play the guitar. Silvan played Major Midget with current Columbus Blue Jacket Ryan Johanson. His favorite food is homemade pizza and his pregame ritual is putting on his gear left to right. His fondest sports moment was playing his first BCHL game.

Ben joined the ‘Pack in May 2012. He is one of three SJHL recruits on the WolfPack Team. He is a proven winner—capturing a Keystone Cup and an SJHL Championship with Revelstoke and La Ronge respectively. Ben spent the last two seasons with La Ronge. He played 57 games in 2011-12 with one goal, eight assists and 107 minutes in penalty time. Bula would like to become a personal trainer.

Duncan returned for the second half of last season and put up five goals and seven assists in 12 games along with 22 penalty minutes. He played junior lacrosse for the Kamloops Venom and junior ‘B” hockey for the KIJHL Kamloops Storm. Duncan is the son of WolfPack head coach Don Schulz. He has the same birthday as former pro football player Hershal Walker. His greatest sports moment was watching Canada winning the gold medal in Olympic hockey or anytime the Detroit Red Wings beat Vancouver. He enjoys golf, skiing, soccer and painting. His fondest sports moment came when he scored in overtime while playing for the Kamloops Storm at the Keystone Cup.

Ryan was the defence partner for the last two seasons with current WolfPack teammate Alex Martin for the PJHL Delta Ice Hawks. He was a PJHL all-star in 2011 as the Hawks won the PJHL title. He won a provincial championship in 2005-06 in Bantam “AA”, was a member of the BC U-16 Best Ever-Fraser/Delta team and his Midget team won the Richmond International Tournament two years in a row (2008, 2009). Ryan played two years of rep lacrosse and baseball. He enjoys snowboarding and working out. Ryan’s favorite movie is Happy Gilmore. “It’s funny no matter how many times you see it,” he says.

Anthony played in 22 games in his first season with TRU scoring 13 goals and adding six assists. He had 24 minutes of penalty time. Delong was the first recruit of 2012-13, joining the WolfPack immediately after the BCIHL season ended in March. This followed as season of 39 goals and 43 assists for the KIJHL Castlegar Rebels and he was the team’s top scorer and MVP. His highlight of being a member of the WolfPack is scoring his first ever BCIHL goal in his hometown in an exhibition game in September. Delong enjoys outdoor activities and says his greatest sports moment was getting to the KIJHL final two years ago (2010-11).

Cloverdale, British Columbia (Sullivan Heights Secondary)5'11" Forward1st year (Business)

Ryan came to the WolfPack along with Aldergrove Kodiak (PJHL) teammates Daniel Higgs and Mark Menicucci. All three committed to the team in March 2013. Ryan appeared in 34 games scoring 11 times and adding 19 assists with six penalty minutes for the Kodiaks last season. His brother Chad played for the BCIHL Trinity Western Spartans. Ryan was a member of the Burnaby Winter Club team which was Provincial and Western Canadian Bantam “AAA” Champions. He was a member of the Langley Blaze baseball program from 2000-2008. Ryan says Detroit Red Wing Pavel Datsuk is his biggest influence in hockey: “his skill and determination is what I strive to achieve, his quotes inspire me to constantly push to be better, his passion and drive for hockey are what I aspire to attain.” Ryan adds that his biggest influence in life is God, his family and friends. He enjoys ping-pong, pool and poker. Some of his former minor hockey teammates playing collegiately include Brayden Jaw (Harvard), Tim Daly (St Cloud State University-Minnesota), Joey Lalegia (University of Denver) and Kaleigh Fratkin (Boston University).

Tyler had a solid rookie season with the WolfPack in 2012-13 with 12 goals and 13 assists in 24 games with 51 penalty minutes. He signed with the WolfPack in April 2012. He was the captain of the KIJHL Kamloops Storm in 2011-12. In four seasons with the Storm, Jackson played in 184 games scoring 63 goals—five short-handed and 20 power play—and 117 assists. His sports highlight to date is playing with the Storm in the 2010 Keystone Cup, where they placed third. He wants to become a chiropractor in the future.

Brandon spent 2012-13 in the KIJHL with the Osoyoos Coyotes where he had 27 goals and 34 assists in 59 games played. He was also given the “Fan’s Choice” award. He played in the BCHL for the Quesnel Millionaires and Prince George Spruce Kings and was a teammate of former WolfPack players Rigby Burgart and Shane Mainprize. He enjoys fishing, hunting and rodeoing. Brandon’s favorite movie is Saving Private Ryan. He played minor and junior hockey with Scott Bolland of SAIT (ACAC) and Dennis Pavilina of UVIC (BCIHL). His fondest sports moment was going to Europe to play with his bantam team. His greatest sports moment was scoring his first BCHL goal with his entire family there to watch.

Travis missed the first part of last season and appeared in only 13 games, scoring five times and adding six assists with 45 minutes in penalty time. He came to the WolfPack from the Selkirk College Saints in 2010-11. Travis’ fondest memory with the WolfPack was hosting the BCIHL playoffs in 2011-12 where it was a tournament. He loves to work out and golf. His favorite movie is Step Brothers and his favorite food is Stuffed chicken and pasta. He has a celebrity crush on Carrie Underwood. Travis was the leading scorer of the KIJHL Golden Rockets his final year of junior hockey.

After playing for the Mission City Outlaws of the PJHL in 2011-12, Jake appeared in 21 games in his rookie season with the WolfPack scoring four times and adding 10 assists with 33 minutes in penalty time. His favorite community event last season was going to an elementary school for the Terry Fox run. “It was really enjoyable and the kids were so happy we were helping them out” he says. Jake loves fishing, hunting, tennis, hiking, road hockey and working out. His parents are his biggest influence for sacrificing so much so he could go far in hockey. Five years from now, Jake would like to be a member of the Vancouver Fire Department. His favorite food is Albany Chicken and his fondest sports moment was playing Midget “AAA” hockey. “It was really fun, he says. “ The whole team was as close as brothers”.

Brodie joined the WolfPack from the BCIHL champion Selkirk Saints along Stephen Wolff. He had two goals and two assists with the Saints last year in 13 games. Brodie is a proven winner winning the VIAHA Midget Tier II title in 2006-07, and the VIJHL playoff in 2008-09 along with winning the bronze medal at the Cyclone Taylor Cup where Wolff was his teammate with the Oceanside Generals. Brodie’s favorite NHL player is Martin St. Louis: “Being a smaller player myself I can relate to him” he says. “He has also faced a lot of adversity on his way to the NHL but made it through it all and that is a major motivator.” His favorite movie is MacGruber. Brodie’s favorite sports memory is playing at GM place during a Canucks intermission when he was 10. His favorite food is Pizza and he has celebrity crushes on a number of women including Mila Kunis, Katy Perry and Rachel Bilson.

Josh missed the first half of last season but still wound up scoring five goals in 13 games. He sees himself starting a business of playing some professional hockey in the next five years. His father Cory is his biggest influence for pushing him. He likes working out and golf. Joshua’s favorite community event with the WolfPack was Wendy’s Dreamlift. His fondest sports moment was signing a pro-tryout offer. His greatest sports moment was scoring five goals and four assists in a KIJHL game with Golden. That set a league record. He played minor and junior hockey with current teammate Travis Herlein.

Blake took part in a number of community activities with the WolfPack this past season including Terry Fox runs in the schools. He played 21 games getting three assists and having 12 minutes in penalty time. He was either a captain or assistant captain for all his minor hockey “AAA” teams. He is a proven winner—each team he played with since the age of 14 won a championship. Moynes played OFSAA football growing up and hopes to be a high school outdoor or physical education teacher and coach hockey and football teams. His greatest influence is hometown hero Cory Conacher who is an AHL player (MVP and rookie of the year in AHL). Moynes is a raft guide, and assistant mountain bike patrol guide.

Steven committed to the WolfPack in late August 2013. He played the last few seasons for former WHL’er Kris Mallette and the KIJHL North Okanagan Knights. He had 12 goals and 24 assists and 65 penalty minutes in 2012-13. Mallette is Steven’s role model for helping him take his game to a new level and helping him as a leader (he was captain of the Knights last year). He was the Knight’s fan favorite in 2011-12 and 2012-13 and won the community award in 2010-11. Steven was part of the North Okanagan team which won the Provincial title in 2010. He loves to eat steak and loves to work out. His favorite movie is The Other Guys.

Alex played for the Ridge Meadows Flames in the PJHL this past season scoring seven times and adding 10 assists along with 110 penalty minutes. He sees himself as a certified general accountant and coaching hockey in five years. His father Pat is his biggest influence for pushing him to work hard and improve. Alex loves beef dip and his fondest sports moment was finishing second at the Midget provincials on home ice. He played minor and junior hockey with current teammate Jake Howardson. He loves to cross train and play x-box. Alex’s favorite movie is Step Brothers.

Cameron played with the KIJHL Nelson Maple Leafs and the Princeton Posse where he had career totals in the KIJHL of 120 games played, seven goals and 14 assists along with 257 penalty minutes. He was a member of the U-16 Team Okanagan Rugby squad, the U-16 Okanagan Heat basketball team and went to the Senior High provincials in rugby. His father Peter played Junior Hockey in Quebec and Cameron says he is his greatest influence for standing behind him and coaching him in minor hockey. He enjoys sushi. Cameron played spring hockey growing up with fellow WolfPack rookies Sean Maktaak and Tyler Berkholtz. His greatest sports moment was travelling to Australia for rugby in a season where his Immaculata squad (an “A” school playing “AA”) went undefeated at regionals and placed 11th at the provincials (a school record).

Daniel, along with fellow rookies Ryan Veillet and Mark Menicucci came to the WolfPack from the PJHL Aldergrove Kodiaks. He played 34 games with the Kodiaks last season scoring 13 goals and adding 22 assists. Daniel and Veillet were line mates at times with Aldergrove. He credits his dad Joe for always helping him achieve his goals. Daniel hopes to be opening up his own company and playing hockey in Europe five years from now. He enjoys basketball and baseball. His favorite movie is Miracle because as he says, it shows the underdog can win. His pre-game routine is Subway and a nap five hours before game time.

New Westminster, British Columbia (Penticton Secondary)5'11" Forward1st year (Police and Justice)20 years old (July 7, 1992)Parent’s names: Monica & Merlin

Colton played the last two seasons in the KIJHL with the Nelson Leafs (where he was a teammate of fellow WolfPack rookie Cameron Weir). He was team captain in 2012-13 and was seventh in league scoring with 25 goals and 42 assists and 154 minutes in penalty time. Colton would like to be playing professional hockey five years from now with an eye to being a police officer. His favorite movie is Billy Madison starring Adam Sandler- Colton says he “loves a good comedy now and then.” He was “player of the month’ on his respective junior teams in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Colton’s greatest sports moment so far was when he was named captain of the Maple Leafs and his fondest memory in sports was winning a gold medal in a pee wee tournament. His former minor hockey teammate Matt Hewitt is playing in the CIS for UBC.

Chris committed to the WolfPack in May after finishing his junior career with the KIJHL Fernie Ghostriders. He was named the MVP and most inspirational player last season with Fernie. Chris had a record of 24-12-1 with a goals against average of 2.88 and a save percentage of .912. Chris has two brothers and a sister and his parents are farmers near Burns Lake. His father played university basketball. Chris enjoys playing the guitar, mountain biking and all sports. His favorite food is potatoes and cheese. When he was 13, Chris was attacked by a grizzly bear and broke his femur and fractured his skull in two places. His greatest sports moment was in the KIJHL when Fernie beat Kimberley in seven games in 2010-11(his younger brother was playing for Kimberley at the time).

Mark is one of three members of the 2012-13 Abbotsford Kodiaks (PJHL) who joined the WolfPack in the off season. He led the Kodiaks to the PJHL final and was named to the league all-star team. Mark had a goals against average of 2.17 with four shutouts, a record of 19 and 2 in 28 games. He had a save percentage of .934. Mark says his late grandfather would have been very proud to see him attend university and play hockey. His fondest memory was winning a high school hockey championship in 2011. His former teammates Thomas Hardy and Matt Luongo played last season in the BCIHL with league champion Selkirk. Mark’s second cousin is former Vancouver Canuck great, Trevor Linden.

Tyler played in the BCHL last season for the Trail Smoke Eaters where he had 45 points in 56 games and was named their MVP. He committed to the WolfPack in August of 2013. Tyler played competitive lacrosse and was a member of Team BC which came second at Nationals where he was a second team all-star. He played minor hockey with current WolfPack team mate Sean Maktaak. He loves steak but his pre-game routine is having chicken and pasta. He says his hobbies include anything to get him out of the house. His father Greg is the biggest influence on his life because he looks up to him.
