Before starting this editorial, I want to thank everyone for

the fantastic love and great reception that our first edition

received! Surely those good feelings will motivate us to

continue on to do the best job for you.

September was the month of fashion in Second Life. Some

members of the Tropicalia Bazaar participated in the

fashion shows at the fantastic Modavia Fashion Week

2011. Also in September, Linden Lab held a chat between

professionals, bloggers and residents about fashion in their

official forum and blog, the Second Life Fashion Experts.

Our fashion editorial is filled with delightful looks prepared

by fashion lovers for fashion lovers. By the way, some of

those lovers were part of the Second Life Fashion Experts.

Isn´t this amazing ?!

Vick Spitteler has handpicked some blogs that you should

know in our section, Blogsphere. Silton Mindes explores

every detail on the cute Zigana Sim in search of the best

horizon.

I selected some of the best photos published in the

Tropicalia Bazaar group, and you can see them in That

Tropicalia Feeling. Don´t forget to visit the bazaar, buy

Fashion Moves Us

Second Life may not have been the great success many

predicted in mid-2006 and 2007, and this is not the main

subject in this article, but yet, it still is large and has

significant numbers. The approximately one million

residents around the Second Life world buy the equivalent

of an average of ten million U.S. dollars in Linden dollars

per month according to data released by Linden Lab a few

days ago. The vast majority of residents are driven by

people eager to consume, and within that universe of bids

submitted, much of it is directed at products to improve

the appearance of avatars, i.e. fashion. That's why fashion

moves us.

In mid-2003, a North American created an account in

Second Life: Nephilaine Protagonist is the name of her

avatar and she was one of the pioneers in the new world

made of pixels. When she created her brand of clothes for

fun, Pixeldolls, she barely had any idea of the proportion

that the game would take. Nephilaine Protagonist earned

around ten thousand dollars per day selling her creations

in Second Life and was the protagonist of the documentary

Ideal Life, produced in 2005, and shown in several

countries, including Brazil. Pixeldolls still exists, but has

lost market. The competition that was nonexistent at the

time of Pixeldolls peak became larger and larger, and today,

there are thousands of stores offering millions of products.

Currently, even with more modest numbers, a multitude of

creators still use Second Life as their major source of

income. Of course, some creators have more “staying

power” than others, yet many have turned creativity into

profit because there will always be room for quality and

professionalism.

We have seen many evolutions in the world of fashion in

Second Life since the introduction of sculpts, which

allowed designers greater freedom and creativity, to the

recent introduction of mesh which is beginning to be

explored by many designers of clothing and accessories.

In the world of fashion in Second Life, being a good

designer and producing quality items are usually enough.

But now it seems that many of the management rules

applied to real companies are being used in Second Life.

That is why the big brands in Second Life have on their staff

professionals who are responsible for marketing. These

professionals have the task of identifying opportunities, whether

through partnerships, participation in events, fairs, discount stores,

fashion shows, to coordinating what is disclosed in fashion blogs and

creating groups of bloggers where their company’s items are offered

for review. The disclosure of these brands is intense through groups

and advertising in fashion magazines and blogs. To be remembered, it

must be seen.

Recently, a new wave of fashion blogs in Second Life has emerged and

many of them are really well produced and receive many visits. For

these residents, creating and maintaining a blog is a fun hobby. The

best and most visited blogs are known to divulge their favorite brands,

helping to move the fashion market.

There are always great events going on in fashion, but certainly one of

the biggest was held last month: the Modavia Fashion Week (MFW).

Several renowned brands had exclusive creations and releases in a

week devoted entirely to fashion. The event was a great success and

generated traffic in the order of 50 thousand visitors! The Modavia

Fashion Week is an annual fashion event sponsored by Modavia

Productions led by Poptart Lilliehook. This year there were 50

participating brands and among them were Azoury, Giereh and Indyra

Originals who currently offers its products at discounted prices in The

Tropicalia Bazaar. Giereh Thorr, Giereh designer, believes that

participating in an event of this level is very important for retailers

who have not yet fallen into grace with the public. He says he is

flattered to have his work recognized and to have been invited to share

the catwalk with brands so special and with such talented designers.

Indyra Seigo, the talented designer of Indyra Co, lent to MFW elegance

with sophisticated hats and accessories, all the result of impeccable

design. Azoury currently bets on mesh shoes.

Also in September, Linden held a chat between experts,

bloggers and residents about fashion in their official forum

and blog, Second Life Fashion Experts. The Tropicalia

Magazine was well represented by Thereaver Barrymore,

Vick Spitteler, Lotus Mastroianni and Laylinha Tomsen. We

shared ideas and posts with Iris Ophelia, Felicity

Blumenthal, Frolic Mills, SAYS Scarborough, Whimsy Winx,

Harper Beresford, Poptart Lillehook, Casja Lilliehook, Gidge

Urizar, Strawberry Singh, Lily Karlsba Ponino Oh. The four-

day event featured many fashion topics. Issues such as

working with and using mesh to discussions on the

prominent shops were all part of the forum. Each

participant wrote a post that was featured on the official

SL blog.

For some, fashion might seem to be superficial and without

much importance. But, in Second Life, it is the basis of the

economy where only those that have talent, integrity and

professionalism can survive.
