• Biotic: plants feed the animals. Animals hunt other animals. The large trees help compact the soil.

What is Biodiversity?

• Biodiversity is the variety of plants and animals in an ecosystem. I can be studied on many levels. The smallest scale of biodiversity is a pond or neighborhood park. The largest scale of biodiversity is all of the plants and animals on Earth. One of largest challenges in Science is identifying all of the plants and animals on Earth. This task has not yet been fulfilled.

How does biodiversity contribute to the sustainability of an ecosystem?

• Biodiversity helps sustain an ecosystem by providing food for all of the animals. Sustainability is a key factor in an ecosystem. Plants and animals help to do this. If a certain population gets too large other population species will go down. This will put the ecosystem out of balance.
