Located on the eastern coast of Bangka Island, Pangkalpinang is the island’s largest city and capital of the Province of Bangka-Belitung Islands. Aside from its role as the center of the provincial government, economic, and commercial activities, Pangkalpinang serves as gateway for visitors who wish to explore the enchanting beauty of Bangka and Belitung Islands. Long known as the center of the tin mining industry, in its heydays Bangka produced some of the best tin ore and tin handicrafts. The tin mining industry drew Chinese workers and their descendants to the island, who brought their culture to root-down on Bangka, thus decorating the city of Pangkalpinang with visible Chinese nuances in its architecture and rituals. But besides its rich cultural heritage, Pangkalpinang also boasts some pristine beaches.

As visitors step down at the Depati Amir Airport, a huge sign welcomes them saying “Welcome to the land of Serumpun Sebalai”. Serumpun Sebalai or Seiya Sekata in Bahasa Indonesia has deep meaning that unity only comes with actions that correspond to speech and promises. More than the Province’s slogan, however,Serumpun Sebalai underscores the spirit that unites the plural society of the islands into one big family. Pangkal or Pengkal in the Malay language means center or beginning. It refers to the city’s role as the center of the tin mining industry. This once small mining town subsequently grew into the island’s commercial center as well as connecting port among all the islands. Pinang on the other hand is the palm tree found abundantly on the island.

To trace the history of tin mining industry on Bangka and Belitung and in Indonesia in general, visit the Indonesia Tin Museum located at Jl. Jendral Achmad Yani no.17 in the heart of Pangkalpinang. Housing various collections on the subject of tin mining, the museum is the only museum of its kind in Asia. The building itself is a heritage of national history since it was once used as venue for a meeting between Indonesian leaders and Dutch representatives for Indonesia’s independence from Dutch colonial powers. Pangkalpinang also boasts pristine beaches. Located some 7 km from downtown Pangkalpinang, the Pasir Padi Beach offers beautiful scenery of white sand and clear blue ocean waters. The beach is also a perfect site to watch the sun rise in the morning. At ebb tide, visitors can walk to the nearby Punan Island and bathe in its calm waters. Not too far from Pasir Padi Beach, about 2.5 km from here is theTanjung Bunga Beach which offers beautiful scenery of a flat beach decorated with huge granite rock formations.

Culturally, Pangkalpinang is heavily influenced by Chinese culture.which began around 1770 when Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II of Palembang Darussalam Sultanate invited laborers from China to work at tin mining industries on Bangka and Belitung. Subsequently, Chinese laborers arrived from Siam, Malaka (in present day Malaysia) and the Southern part of China. Most are Hakka (Khek) ethnic descent from the province of Guang Xi in China, The migrants would soon marry locals, since Chinese authorities at the time forbade women from migrating with their men. Their intermarriage and their descendents call themselves: Peranakan Chinese. Therefore, today the Chinese and native Malay ethnic groups form the majority of the population in Pangkalpinang . As part of the roots of Chinese culture, the Kwan Tie Miaw temple stands beautifully at the Mayor Syarif Rachman Street. Initially called Kwan Tie Bo temple, it is one of the oldest temples on the island and according to inscriptions on the temple’s bell, it is estimated to have been built in 1841. Along with the nearbyMambo market and Singapore Alley, the area is the Chinatown of Pangkalpinang where are often held Chinese traditional ceremonies such as the ritual to repel misfortune called Pot Ngin Bun.

T here is an old Greek proverb that says “Simplicity is the shortest path to beauty”; this is the perfect

expression for the small charming Gedong Village located at Kuto Panji, Belinyu sub-district, Bangka Regency, in the Bangka-Belitung Province. Standing as solid proof of Bangka-Belitung’s uniquely diverse cultural origins and highlighted with heavy Chinese atmosphere, Gedong Village is arguably the oldest Chinatown complex on Bangka island.

A distinct sense of simplicity and serenity envelopes the village. Entering Gedong village, the peaceful ambience will make anyone feel almost like stepping back in time, into scenes of some old Chinese Kung Fu Movie. Set on 2.5 hectares of land, antique buildings with distinct Chinese architecture dominate the scene at Gedong Village. A modest steel monument greets visitors at the entrance of the village before their eyes are treated with antique wooden houses covered by clay roof tiles.

Although some of the buildings have undergone renovations, a number are still kept in their original state. Some houses even still use wooden pegs instead of steel nails. These antique buildings are estimated to be over 100 years old but still firmly withstand the test of time. The village is home to approximately 50 households or about 300 people who still preserve some of the indigenous traditions. For years, the village has also become the center of Chinese traditional ceremonies such as at Imlek (Chinese New Year),Peh Chun, and Qing Ming. While some of the families use electric generators for basic needs, the village has yet to receive electricity. However, the lack of electricity contributes to the creation of a natural ambience to the village.

Romodong beach is located at Bukit Ketok village, Belinyu district, Bangka regency. This beach

isabout 77 km of Sungailiat town. In this beach, the tourists can watch the sunset, because this beach is faced to west side. The length of this beach is about 4 km, it is slope, white sandy and soft. Its water is very clear like a crystal.

Beach Romodong better visited in the afternoon, because we can watch the sunset event. That is because the location of the beach facing west. Rather unfortunate, when the first sights of the car is rubbish leaves and some other junk, so a little less beautiful views. But the scenery more beautiful it will be when we walked to the edge of the beach. When we entered the beach, the first sights seen is a large rock shaped like a turtle.

THE BEAUTY.

Penyusuk Beach truly are world class. The pure white, fine, sand particles are more like powdered sugar then sand and are of such quality that high-end resorts in Singapore and Malaysia have imported it for their own manmade beaches. The sand has such a high silica count that it is also mined for glass making. That’s how God created the beauty on this earth, and within Bangka, and its people, there is a feeling of peace and tranquility. From the placid turquoise seas, bordered by the white sand beaches perfect for swimming, snorkeling and sailing to the friendly smiles of the multiethnic locals to the well preserved colonial era downtown. Bangka Island really deserves the title“The Caribbean of the East” with many beautiful beaches for travel destination. and one of the beach is Penyusuk Beach.

Foreign missions came there for negotiating with our former President; the plane from UNCI (United Nations Commission for Indonesia) flew back and forth from Jakarta to Bangka Island during that period. This place is also called as Wisma Ranggam. The room, which was used, by the late President as well as his car is still can be seen in the building. Located in the western region of Bangka Island, the town of Muntok is not only the capital of the West Bangka Regency, but is also a historical town rich in the legacies of European, Chinese, and Malay cultures.Muntok or also known as Mentok was once an important harbor town. Through this harbor, top commodities of Bangka-Belitung including pepper and tin were hauled to Dutch merchant ships before they found their way to the major cities of Europe. Considering the town’s significant role in the Dutch colonial era, no wonder that you will find the town filled with a large number of Dutch heritage buildings that still stand tall today as witness to a golden bygone era.

Besides Dutch legacies, the town is also decorated with Chinese and Malay architecture. The very existence of these unique buildings divides the city into three major clusters: the old European town, The Chinatown, and the Malay Town. The old European Town is situated in the heart of Muntok, north of the Malay Town. It is here, that a Dutch Tin Mining Company, the Banka Tin Winning Bedrijfwas once established. Along with the Mining Company, several European style building were then erected as supporting offices as well as residences Dutch employees. With the Banka Tin Winning Bedrijf’s office as the most prominent, remnants of the Dutch Tin Mining era can also be seen in other European architecture including that of the Dutch Resident’s Office along with the Wilhelmina Park, the Tin Mining Employees residential complex, the Post Office, and thePesanggerahan Muntok.

The old lighthouse was built in 1826. It is located about 9 km of Muntok district. In the surrounding area we still can find wrecks of Dutch and British ships, which were torpedoed by Japanese warships during the Second World War, on 16 February 1942. Take our time to climb up 199 steps to reach the top of the lighthouse and enjoy the spectacular view from the height of approximately 60 M above sea level. We can see the whole beaches in Muntok.

GEOGRAPHICALLY

North coast of the island is South China Sea, Java Sea on the South coast, Kari Mata strait on the

East close to Borneo Island and Gaspar strait on the West close to Bangka island. The land is about 4833 square km, 89 km long (East to West) and 69 km wide (North to South) with diversified terrain, hilly areas and extensive tracks of marshland. The climate is tropical, temperature around 27 - 31 C degree during the day and 23 - 25 C degree during the night. There only 2 season a year, rainy season (120mm) from October to April and hot season during April to October. The highest land is Tajam Mountain, only 500m above the sea. The others are just a hill likes Burung Mandi, Kubing, Kik Karak, Peramun, Selumar, Guda, ect.

The land surface is originally tropical forest, but since the development palm oil industry in 1992 more than 40% of the surface are palm oil plantation. Downtown Tanjung Pandan is quite interesting due to the many Dutch Colonial buildings and shop houses. Most of the government buildings are original Dutch buildings and the Old Dutch tin mining housing compound is still kept up. Traditional Bugis fishing craft and an odd assortment of other boats make the wharf and fish market an interesting place, certainly for its smells, to visit.

Traditional tin mining methods are cool to watch, there are no chemicals, just water and lots of mud. Also for those who don’t live here every day, the palm, coconut and pepper plantations can be interesting. Culturally, Belitung has a rich diversity of people. Check out the cool Malay style wooden houses that remind you of the Caribbean, or the Bugis traditional raised houses where their half dock is used to dry fish. A Chinese Buddhist temple, said to be one of the oldest in Indonesia, was built by the survivors of an ancient Chinese trading vessel. While Balinese migrants have a thriving community which continues to carry on Bali’s traditions and religion.

If you are familiar with Indonesian food, there are many big restaurants in Tanjungpandan serving Nasi Padang or Chinese foods. There are many stores and supermarkets in Tanjungpandan that provide any stuff needed. In Tanjung Tinggi there are many traditional seafood restaurants along with top international standard restaurant in hotels that are located along some of the beautiful Beaches. The special dishes of the Island are the Suto Belitong, which consists of soup, rice cake and vegetables; and the authentic Balitung noodle or the Mie Belitung.
