Man-Yi and Tropical Cyclones

Flood from the Yura river overflow

In September of last year a tropical storm named, Man-yi made its way through Japan. This tropical cyclone was almost as big as Japan and it caused many disasters throughout the country. Man-yi brought nearly 20 inches of rainfall within 48 hours of striking land. The extra rain created landslides, which took at least two lives. The abundance of water in such a short amount of time caused rivers to overflow and flooded the city of Kyoto. About 81,000 residents in the nearby city of Fukuchiyama were forced to evacuate due to muddy waters. Hundreds of people had been reported injured from the havoc of Man-Yi.

Man-Yi and Tropical Cyclones

The Tropical Cyclone caused more than just natural disasters, the flooding forced the Tokoyo Electric Power Company to release radioactive water from another power plant which was previously damaged in Fukushima. 1,130 tons of radioactive water was released into the Pacific Ocean. There are concerns over the safety and future effects of releasing the water into the ocean.

A tropical cyclone, depending on speeds and direction, can also be known

as:

A Tropical Depression - winds 0-38mph A Tropical Storm - winds 39-73 mph A Hurricane or Typhoon - winds 74mph

and up

How does it begin?

- A tropical cyclone life can usually begin in areas of rough weather and thunderstorms in the tropics. When many tropical thunderstorms start to combine, they become an organized system of winds.

However, many things still have to line up for a cyclone to be created:

Winds of at least 74 mph

Warm & moist air

Be at least 300 miles away from the equator.

Tropical cyclones can cause many hazards:

storm surges storm tides tornadoes rough winds rainfall rip currents

When does it end?

A cyclone can weaken very quickly when it travels over cold waters or land.

A cyclone needs the warm moist air above the ocean to survive, it is the fuel that keeps the cyclone alive- once the cyclone loses that- it begins to die down and weaken.

Although if the cyclone moves back over warm waters it can begin to strengthen again.

The storm of Man-Yi is an example of a cyclone being slowed down and stopped by land.
