No hay duda que dentro del sector de la iluminación, el carril

electrificado ha sido unos de los grandes inventos del último siglo.

Llegó hace unos años y revolucionó el mercado de la iluminación,

dando lugar al nacimiento de la iluminación técnica.

En Troll nos sentimos orgullosos que junto al descubrimiento del

primer carril electrificado para aparatos eléctricos que existió en el

mundo, naciera la marca Troll. Y nos enorgullece haber contribuido

al mercado con esta reveladora aportación que indudablemente

se ha convertido hoy en una solución presente en instalaciones de

cualquier rincón del mundo.

Gracias al éxito alcanzado por el invento del carril electrificado,

la compañía experimentó un fuerte crecimiento que supuso su

dinamización. Fruto de exitosas innovaciones posteriores, un sólido

know-how luminotécnico y un consolidado prestigio internacional,

Troll entra en una fase de expansión que la convierte hoy, en una

marca líder en el campo de la iluminación técnica, con más de 75 años

There is no question within the lighting sector that track system was

one of the great inventions of the last century. It arrived several

years ago and revolutionised the lighting market, giving rise to the

birth of technical illumination.

At Troll, we are especially proud that together with the discovery of

the first track lighting system for electrical appliances that existed in

the world came the Troll brand. We feel proud of having contributed

to the market with this revealing development that has undoubtedly

become today a solution present in installations around the world

Thanks to the success achieved through the invention of track

system, the company underwent strong growth that also involved

In 1961, Federico Schönhöfer and Manuel Clausells invented the

first electric track with a continuous contact outlet for slidable

electric appliances (Patent registered in 1961).

The idea of track lighting was created by its inventors from the

need to light several single points at an art exhibition at that time.

Until then, luminaries that required movement to the place to be

illuminated needed the sockets or to have a conductive cord that

allowed them to reach different positions.

Fritz Schönhöfer and Manuel Clausells came up with the idea of a

new system that used a slidable connector that effectively eliminated

previous inconveniences. This invention gave rise to the first electric

track for electrical appliances at a worldwide level, named with Troll

brand. Its name arose from the inspiration of the trolley bus system

in use at that time. And from the name ‘trolley’ to the brand Troll.

In 1962, the Troll track system received a Delta (ADI

FAD), a prestigious award granted upon the merit of

innovation and creativity. With this great discovery, the

TROLL brand was born as a new concept in interior

technical lighting design. After the great contribution

made to the world of lighting, Troll started to develop in

the field of technical lighting.

el primer carril electrificado con toma de contacto continua para

aparatos eléctricos deslizables (Patente registrada en el año 1961).

La idea del carril surge de sus inventores a partir de la necesidad de

iluminar varios monopuntos en una exposición de arte de la época.

Hasta ese momento, las luminarias que requerían un desplazamiento

del lugar a iluminar, precisaban de bases de enchufe o poseer una

longitud de cordón conductor que les permitiera alcanzar posiciones

variadas.

Fritz Schönhöfer y Manuel Clausells idearon un nuevo sistema

con conector deslizable con el que quedaban eliminados estos

inconvenientes. El invento dio lugar al primer carril electrificado

para aparatos eléctricos a nivel mundial, al que se bautizó con el

nombre Troll. El nombre surge por inspiración del sistema de los

trolley bus de aquella época. Y del nombre ‘trolley’ a la marca Troll.

En el año 1962, el carril Troll recibe un Delta (ADI FAD),

prestigioso galardón concedido al mérito en innovación

y creatividad. Con este gran descubrimiento, nace la

marca TROLL como un nuevo concepto de diseño en la

iluminación técnica de interiores. A partir de esta gran

aportación al mercado de la iluminación, Troll empieza a

desarrollarse en el campo de la iluminación técnica.

Troll’s success has been the absolute control over the entire product lifecycle from its conception through its

final application, with production technologies required to complete the production cycle and simultaneously

“Iluminamos sus ideas” sigue siendo nuestro leitmotiv porque representa el espíritu de la compañía para establecer

lazos entre todos nuestros clientes, ofreciéndoles soluciones de iluminación adaptadas a sus necesidades. Y de

iluminar las ideas de nuestros clientes, nace el innovador y sorprendente concepto Customlight.

Fruto de las latentes necesidades todavía no resueltas, sobretodo la creciente demanda de

una iluminación adaptada a entornos más flexibles, se origina Customlight, un nuevo un

sistema integral de iluminación que supondrá una revolución en cuanto a diseño se refiere.

La iluminación técnica y la emoción se han unido para crear este conjunto que nace dentro

del equipo interno de diseñadores de Troll con un único propósito, mezclar luz técnica y

decorativa libremente. Su atributo principal es la personalización que se consigue eligiendo y

combinando los distintos elementos de Customlight, pudiendo crear la atmósfera ambiental

deseada y a la vez obtener una iluminación exigente técnicamente.

El potencial del nuevo sistema se ve ratificado por la obtención del premio DESIGN PLUS

de la feria Light + Building 2006, galardón reconocido internacionalmente y asociado a la

alta calidad de los productos.

A fruit of the latent yet-unresolved needs,

above all as regards the growing demand for

lighting that is adapted to the most flexible

settings, came the idea of Customlight,

a new integral lighting system that will

represent a revolution in the design world.

Technical lighting and emotion have come

together to create this whole that was born

within the internal design team at Troll with

a single objective, to freely mix technical

and decorative lighting. Its main attribute

is the personalisation obtained by selecting

and combining the different elements of

Customlight, where you are able to create

the desired background atmosphere and

simultaneously obtain lighting that is

technically demanding.

The potential of this new system has been

vouched for by obtaining the DESIGN PLUS

prize at the Light + Building 2006 fair, a

prize that is internationally recognised and

associated with the highest product quality.

Customlight es mucho más que una luminaria, es un conjunto de iluminación técnico-decorativo de

superficie preparado para personalizar espacios. Una gran variedad de combinaciones son posibles a

partir de la composición libre de los elementos ofertados y según características técnicas del entorno a

iluminar. Incluso después de la primera instalación se puede elegir, combinar y cambiar la iluminación,

la situación y el aspecto de la luminarias, alterando así la escenificación del ambiente.

Customlight es un sistema a medio camino entre las soluciones actuales de empotrar y de superficie que

viene a resolver situaciones en las que por las características técnicas del local, no se puede empotrar y

a la vez sea necesario que las luminarias queden estéticamente integradas en el espacio.

El sistema se ha creado para que goce de una gran flexibilidad, de manera que las luminarias puedan

evolucionar con el propio espacio. La finalidad de este nuevo concepto es dotar al diseñador de iluminación

e incluso al usuario final, de una gran libertad para adaptar el sistema a sus necesidades, gustos estéticos

y características arquitectónicas del local.

Customlight is much more than just a luminaire; it is an entire surface technical-decorative lighting system

prepared in order to personalise spaces. A large variety of combinations are possible, starting from the

free layout of the elements and depending on the technical features of the setting to be illuminated. Even

after the initial installation, you shall be able to select, combine and change the lighting, the location and

the appearance of the luminaires, thus altering the mood and ambience of the setting.

Customlight is a customised system halfway between the current recessed and surface mounted systems

that resolve situations in which –due to the technical features of the space- the luminaires cannot be

recessed, but there is a need for the luminaries to be aesthetically integrated with the space.

The system has been created in order to provide great flexibility, so that the luminaries can evolve with

the space itself. The objective of this new concept is to endow the lighting designer and even the end

user with a delicious freedom to adapt the system to their needs, aesthetic tastes and the architectural

characteristics of the premises.08 09

Customlight es la unión entre racionalismo e imaginación.

El resultado es un conjunto de elementos móviles que

proporcionan un rediseño del espacio con comodidad

para colocar los distintos elementos donde se desee y

cuya evolución en el tiempo está asegurada. El conjunto

cumple los requisitos luminotécnicos y decorativos

indispensables y combina las necesidades de iluminación

de acento y difusa. Con elementos de fácil montaje, dotan

a la instalación de gran una versatilidad y logran la

configuración deseada, sin necesidad de herramientas ni

personal especializado, porque como su nombre indica,

el sistema es personalizable, el sistema es Custom.

Sistema de carril adosado o suspendido que permite conectar simultáneamente luminarias por la cara

inferior como superior del carril.

Pértigas que dotan de libertad a las luminarias, permitiendo expandir el alcance de las luminarias hasta

la zona a iluminar.

Lamproyectores cuyo innovador concepto los sitúa en la frontera entre la iluminación decorativa y

técnica y donde la base es un elemento de iluminación difusa sobre el que pueden acoplarse elementos

de iluminación de acento, formando un conjunto de iluminación integrado.

Proyectores de acento caracterizados por su simplicidad y estética minimalista, pudiendo incorporar

una pantalla difusa decorativa.

Downlights de haz expansible cuya distribución fotométrica de los minireflectores puede concentrarse

o expandirse modificando el haz general.

Bañadores verticales que pueden ubicarse centrados sobre cuadros y bañar planos verticales, a la vez

que es posible suspender el propio cuadro.10 11

Customlight is the union between rationalism and imagination. The end result is a set

of mobile elements that provide the redesigning of spaces with a comfort to be able to

place the different items wherever you wish and whose evolution over time is assured.

The system fulfils the indispensable technical and decorative lighting requirements and

combines accent and diffuse lighting needs. The elements are easy to both assemble

and install, equipping the installation with great versatility and ease in obtaining the

desired layout, without the need of tools or specialised personnel. This is due to the

fact –as its name implies- that the system can be personalised, the Custom system.

Track system that is either surface mounted or suspended, allows

luminaires to be simultaneously connected both on the lower and upper

faces of the track.

Poles that endow the luminaires with great freedom, allowing the scope

of the luminaires to be expanded throughout the zone to be lit.

Lamprojectors whose innovative concept places them on the border

between decorative and technical lighting. The base is a diffuse lighting

element on which accent lighting elements can be fitted, forming an

integrated lighting system.

Spotlights characterised by their simplicity and minimalist aesthetic,

where a diffuse decorative screen can be added.

Expandable beam downlights where the photometric layout of

the mini-reflectors can be concentrated or expanded by changing the

general beam.

Vertical wall washers that can be centred over paintings and bath

vertical planes, while also possible to suspend the picture itself.10 11

Customlight adapts to the technical specifications of any space, due to being a surface system and because all of the elements are characterised by great versatility and ease of installation. The system is impressive, as it allows the luminaries to be expanded by increasing their scope beyond the location of the track, just in the zone to be illuminated.

Hoy en día estamos acostumbrados a dar

por obvio aquello que no lo es. Muchas

veces no observamos con suficiente atención

nuestro alrededor, donde múltiples ideas

flotan en el aire.

Fruto de una particular visión del entorno

nace Window, una solución imaginativa

que surge a partir de un concepto simple y

existente. Concretamente la idea se origina a

partir de la observación e interpretación de

los efectos de luz que producen las persianas

en diversos ambientes, para iluminar,

para crear sensaciones, para sorprender...

Window nace con un doble propósito, ser un

concepto universalmente conocido y tener

perpetuidad en el tiempo. En definitiva, a

través del binomio observación y creatividad

se ha transformando una idea simple en un

concepto brillante.

In current times, we are used to assuming

that things are obvious when they are not.

We often do not observe our surroundings

with enough attention, where multiple ideas

float in the air.

Window was born as the fruit of a unique

vision held about our environment, an

imaginative solution that arose from a

simple and existing concept. Concretely,

the idea originated from the observation

and interpretation of the effects of light

from window blinds in different settings, to

illuminate, to create sensations, to surprise…

Window is being created with a double

objective, to be a universally known and to

have perpetuity over time. In short, through

the binomial observation and creativity,

a simple idea has been transformed into a

brilliant concept.

Window ha sido ideada por el reconocido diseñador Antoni Arola con el propósito, como en todos sus proyectos, de estimular reacciones con

sus diseños. Generar emociones con juegos de luz es el reto que este diseñador ha sabido culminar con éxito con la creación de Window.

Con una perspicaz mirada del entorno, se perciben diferentes sentimientos que evocan el efecto de luz a través de las persianas: emoción,

intimidad, descanso, relajación, libertad, luminosidad, estabilidad, claridad, solidez, sentimiento, confortabilidad, equilibrio, protección...

Emociones que seducen a todo el mundo, pues es una manera de filtrar la luz de manera universal.

La luz de Window pretende ser una metáfora de la salida de la luz del sol a través de una ventana, conseguida con la reproducción de una

”ventana virtual” que regula la intensidad de la luz.

Window was conceived and designed by the recognised designer

Antoni Arola with the objective, like in all of his projects, of sti-

mulating reactions to his designs. Generating emotions by playing

with light is the challenge that this designer has understood how to

successfully culminate with the creation of Window.

With a perspicacious look at our environment, different feelings are

perceived that evoke the effect of light through window blinds: emo-

tion, intimacy, rest, relaxation, freedom, luminosity, stability, clarity,

solidity, feeling, comfort, balance, protection… Emotions that sedu-

ce the whole world, as it is a universal way of filtering light.

The light of Window intends to be a metaphor for the light that co-

mes through a window, obtained with the reproduction of a “virtual

window” that regulates the intensity of light.

Antoni Arola es una de las figuras más relevantes del diseño español,

cuya trayectoria profesional en interiorismo y diseñado industrial ha

sido galardonada en repetidas ocasiones con importes premios de

diseño, entre ellos el premio Nacional de Diseño 2003.

Su visión particular del diseño está marcada por la voluntad de

crear sensaciones a través de sus diseños.

Un repertorio muy amplio de proyectos avalan su experiencia, desde

el interiorismo y los espacios efímeros al diseño de luminarias,

envases, objetos y diseño industrial.

Antoni Arola is one of the most relevant characters in Spanish

design, whose professional path in interior design and industrial

design has been repeatedly awarded with important design prizes,

amongst which figure the 2003 National Design award.

His unique vision of design is marked by his desire to create sensations

through his designs.

An extremely broad repertory of projects vouch for his experience,

from interior design and ephemeral spaces to the design of fairy

luminaires, packaging, objects and industrial design.

Entorno a la reinterpretación de un concepto popular se ha creado la

gama Window. Este nuevo producto se origina a partir del juego de

los efectos de luz, sin otorgar importancia a la forma de la luminaria.

La razón por la que Window se basa más en la idea de la luz, es una

simple evidencia: trabajar con luz estimula la perpetuidad de las

luminarias, en cambio trabajar con la forma no.

Por ello Window se crea a partir de una forma sencilla, capaz de

integrarse en cualquier espacio y estilo decorativo.

Además se ha ideado el extraordinario sistema llamado “beyond

trimless”, sistema de instalación sin marco que permite que la

luminaria quede totalmente enrasada con la pared, logrando un

acabado perfecto.

Around the reinterpretation of a popular concept, the Window

range has been created. This new product originated from a play

on the effects of light, without imbuing the form of the light with

importance. The reason why Window is based more on the idea of the

light is clear: working with light stimulates the perpetuity of the light

sources, while working with shapes does not. Due to this, Window is

created from a simple shape, capable of being integrated into any

space and any decorative style.

Furthermore, the extraordinary system has been created that is

known as “beyond trimless”, a frameless installation system

that allows the luminaire to be totally even with the wall, a perfect

finishing.

El principal atributo de Window es la posibilidad de la propia

luminaria para adecuar la luz al espacio. Para ello, se ha otorgado al

producto de un sencillo sistema de accionamiento de las lamas que a

través de una pequeña rótula, permite un suave movimiento es éstas,

propiciando un cambio en la iluminación del espacio.

Its main attribute is the possibility of the light itself to adapt the

level of luminosity to the space. Through this, Window has been

designed with a simple slat activation system through which a small

piece allows these slats to be gently moved, providing a change in the

illumination of the space.

El Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Nueva York, MOMA seleccionó

recientemente el Aeropuerto de Tenerife Norte como una de las obras

más representativas de la arquitectura española actual, obra del

equipo de arquitectura Antonio Corona, Arsenio Pérez y Eustaquio

Martínez. El edificio posee gran riqueza de formas y volúmenes que

diferencian zonas y usos, resaltando la cúpula central, cuya gran

altura y cubierta acristalada y el hecho de que los mostradores

de atención y facturación estén en zona abierta, proporciona un

ambiente cálido y distendido, que naturaliza el –a menudo- agobiante

hecho de coger un avión.

Este mismo concepto se ha aplicado al resto de las zonas del

aeropuerto, buscando la máxima transparencia entre los diferentes

volúmenes interiores y la máxima luminosidad y continuidad visual

con el exterior.

Todos estos aspectos que el concepto arquitectónico consigue

de por sí en horas diurnas, se cumplen en condiciones de luz

natural insuficiente, con la aplicación de sistemas de iluminación,

para el proyecto y ejecución de los cuales se ha contado con el

asesoramiento de Troll que basa su propuesta en:

Aeropuerto de Tenerife Norte, estética y funcionalidad

Ahorro energético, con la utilización de fuentes de luz de bajo

consumo al tiempo que permitan conseguir un muy elevado nivel de

reproducción cromática.

Mantenimiento, mediante la aplicación de luminarias de alto

rendimiento y alta estabilidad térmica, que proporcionen un alto

nivel de confort visual y mayor duración de las fuentes de luz.

Confort visual, con la aplicación de niveles de iluminación óptimos

para cada uso y un alto control del deslumbramiento.

Técnica y estética, con la instalación de luminarias que,

integradas en el entorno, cumplan su función combinando ambas

características.

El Aeropuerto de Tenerife Norte es un ejemplo de cómo la

arquitectura actual puede combinar espectacularidad con

racionalidad, estética y funcionalidad, y de cómo el estado actual de

la técnica puede apoyar el concepto de sostenibilidad.28 29

Tenerife North Airport, aesthetics and functionalityThe New York Museum of Modern Art, MOMA, recently selected the Tenerife North Airport as one

of the most representative works of current Spanish architecture, a work being carried out by the

architectural team comprised of Antonio Corona, Arsenio Pérez and Eustaquio Martínez. The building

has a great richness of shapes and volumes that set apart the different zones and uses. The central dome

merits special mention, whose imposing height, glazed glass roof and the fact that the ticket counters

and check-in areas are in the open, imbue the building with a warm and expansive ambience, making the

–often- stressful and harrying experience of catching a plane more natural.

This same concept has been applied to the rest of the zones of the airport, seeking the maximum

transparency possible between the different interior volumes and the maximum luminosity and visual

continuity with the outside.

All of these aspects that the architectural concept achieves through

daytime hours are fulfilled when there are insufficient natural light

conditions, with the application of lighting systems. The project

design and execution of these systems have been carried out with the

consultancy of Troll, which based their proposal on:

Energy savings, through the usage of low consumption lighting

sources while simultaneously permitting an extremely high level of

chromatic reproduction to be obtained.

Maintenance, through the application of high yield luminaries with

high thermal stability, which provide a high level of visual comfort

and longer-lasting light sources.

Visual comfort, through the application of optimal lighting levels

for all types of usages and a high level of lighting control.

Technique and aesthetic, through the installation of luminaries that,

integrated with the surroundings, fulfil this function by combining

both features.

The Tenerife North Airport is an example of how modern architecture

can combine spectacular visuals with rationality, aesthetics and

functionality, and how the current technical conditions can support

the concept of sustainability.

En el entorno del forum internacional de las culturas Barcelona

2004 y de la recuperación urbanística del extremo mar de la

avenida Diagonal de Barcelona, los arquitectos Herzog y De Meuron,

ganadores del premio Pritzker, diseñaron un edificio triangular,

estrella del conjunto, llamado Edificio Forum.

El edificio, caracterizado por la simplicidad de líneas, la utilización

de materiales y acabados poco habituales y el dominio creativo de

nuevas tecnologías de forma triangular, combina formas geométricas

básicas con roturas de perspectiva. Todo ello, junto con el juego de

colores y la iluminación consigue unos espacios únicos.

El auditorio está unido al centro de convenciones por un amplio

corredor al que los arquitectos han dado una excepcional importancia,

que se define como una rambla, un espacio multifuncional de

comunicación y paseo, de líneas rectas con roturas de perspectiva y

con entradas de luz a través de grandes claraboyas.

Edificio Forum, iluminación “a la carta”

Para un entorno tan particular pensaron en una luz anaranjada que

pudiera teñir de color el blanco del interior, aumentando el contraste.

La luminaria, de forma hexagonal, incorporaría además unos puntos

de luz en su interior que debían ofrecer una imagen, según las

explicaciones del equipo de arquitectos y los lighting designers de

Isometrix , de “luz rota, como un cubo de hielo con puntos brillantes

en su interior”. Basándose en esta idea, Troll diseñó una luminaria

hexagonal que incorporan tecnologías de última generación, junto

con un juego de materiales difusores que consiguen el efecto. Cada

una de las 800 luminarias incorpora tres sistemas de iluminación de

última tecnología, controlados por protocolo DALI. En la elección

de materiales, fuentes de luz y equipos de alimentación, así como

en el diseño de la luminaria, se han tenido particularmente en

cuenta criterios de ahorro energético y facilidad de instalación y

mantenimiento.

El conjunto final proporciona un aspecto realmente espectacular y

cambiante que hace que en TROLL ILUMINACIÓN nos sintamos

The Forum Building, a tailor-made lighting

Within the setting of the 2004 Barcelona international forum

of cultures and the urban recovery of the sea end of the Avenida

Diagonal in Barcelona, architects Herzog and De Meuron, winners

of the Pritzker prize, designed a triangular building, the star of the

entire structure, which is called the Forum Building.

The building, characterised by the simplicity of its lines, the usage

of uncommon materials and finishings and the creative mastery of

new triangular-shaped technologies, combine basic geometric shapes

with breaks in perspective. All of the above, along with the play of

colours and the lighting, make them into unique spaces.

The auditorium is linked to the convention centre by a wide corridor

that the architects have imbued with an exceptional importance,

which is defined as a pedestrian boulevard, a multifunctional space

for communications and journeys, with straight lines with breaks in

perspective and the entry of light through large skylights.

For such a unique environment, an orange-coloured light was

conceived that could wash the white of the inside with colour,

increasing the contrast. The lighting system, with a hexagonal shape,

would also incorporate points of light in its interior that would offer

an image, according to the explanations of the architectural team

and the lighting designers of Isometrix, “broken light, like an ice-

cube with shining, brilliant points of light inside it”. Based on this

idea, Troll designed this hexagonal lighting system using the latest

generation technologies, along with the play of diffusive materials in

order to achieve the desired effect. Every one of the 800 luminaries

incorporated three avant-garde lighting systems, controlled using

a DALI protocol. During the selection of materials, light sources

and feeding equipment, as well as the actual design of the lights,

electric savings and ease of installation and maintenance have been

especially kept in mind.

The final system as a whole provides a truly spectacular and changing

appearance that makes all of us at TROLL LIGHTING feel very
