Troemner Calibration

Services – Mass Precision & Balance Matched Only By Nature.

Troemner is the country's largestindependent commercial massmetrology laboratory offeringcomplete, full-time masscalibration services. Troemner'smass calibration laboratories andprocesses are ISO/IEC 17025compliant. Troemner’s CalibrationLaboratories have the capability ofproviding mass calibrations from0.050 mg to 2000 kg (0.00001 ozto 5000 lb).

Troemner has earned dualaccreditations for performing masscalibrations from the NationalInstitute of Standards andTechnology (NIST) -administeredNational Voluntary LaboratoryAccreditation Program (NVLAP)and the United KingdomAccreditation Service (UKAS).These accreditations, as well as ourISO 9001 registration, requireTroemner to routinely undergorigorous audits assuring ourcustomers that their precisioncalibration weights and mass

standards meet the highest qualitystandards around the world.Troemner has the added distinctionof being the only United StatesMass Metrology Laboratory withboth NVLAP and UKASaccreditations.

Facility and Environment

Troemner's Mass Laboratories areconstructed to meet the strictenvironmental guidelines listed inNVLAP Handbook 150-2. In fact, our Level I Laboratory exceeds theEnvironmental Cleanliness Systemaccording to Class 1,000requirements. Troemner's Level ILaboratory has been accredited formass calibrations by both NVLAPand UKAS since 1995.

Troemner's Level I Laboratory iscomprised of two rooms, theCalibration Laboratory and theAutomated Mass ComparatorLaboratory. The climate in the

Level I Laboratory is strictly monitored andcontrolled. Temperature in the laboratory ismeasured to 0.01 degree C and controlled towithin 0.2 degree C, with no more than a 0.2degree C change per hour. Humidity is measuredto ± 2% with no more than a 5% change per hour.Barometric pressure is measured to 0.01 mm Hg.Multiple Hepa-filtered air vents comprise 50% ofthe ceiling. This reduces air velocity and aircurrents in the laboratory, which increases masscomparator performance while maintaining closeenvironmental control.

Troemner's Level III Laboratory is also accreditedby NVLAP. Here weights are calibrated to NISTClass F tolerances in the range from 300 g to1,000 kg (0.05 lb to 3,000 lb) as outlined inNIST Handbook 105-1, Specifications andTolerances for Reference Standards and FieldStandard Weights and Measures.

Equipment

All mass comparators used in Troemner'sCalibration Laboratories are state-of-the-art withthe highest precision possible. Troemner currentlyhas 34 mass comparators, four of which areautomated for calibrating ultra precise massstandards. All mass comparators are positioned onmarble tables. Troemner’s most recent acquisitionis a Mettler Toledo, Inc. AX64004 AutomatedMass Comparator for large precision weights from10 kg to 60 kg. Troemner is the only independentcalibration laboratory in the United States thatcan provide calibrations with this type of balance.

Each mass comparator has its own temperatureprobe mounted within the weighing chamber tomeasure the temperature at the time of calibrationin order to make an accurate air buoyancycorrection. Comparators are interfaced to a fileserver outside the lab for processing calibrationdata. Custom software programs ensure theaccuracy of the data collection process andeliminate transposition errors. The laboratory stafftakes many precautions to ensure that thesesensitive instruments work to their maximum levelof accuracy. Measurements for OIML Class E1 andASTM Class 0 Weights are made in the AutomatedMass Comparator Laboratory, as well as thesurveillance of Troemner's primary standards.

Staff

Troemner’s four person metrology staff hasreceived training in mass calibrations at NIST andhas extensive experience in mass calibration. Many of the calibration technicians have alsoreceived training from NIST in addition toextensive in house training.
