TRMA 585 P1: Developing A Professional Online Identity Spring
2012
ONLINE IDENTITIES, PERSONAL BRANDING, SOCIAL MEDIA
• Linked In is a great way to network with other people in your field as well as join groups like the AAMFT and Oregon branches of counseling • I plan to join more groups once internship starts
as well as after graduation • It would be a great place to keep up with alumni
of the program by creating a group• This was my Linked In page:• http://www.linkedin.com/pub/wendy-seiber/40/1

ONLINE PRIVACY
• Online privacy is a big thing for me as well as probably for a lot of people because we put some of our faith and trust into websites and the general internet by accessing it
• We have to be concerned not only for our own privacy but also for the privacy of our clients and our colleagues/peers
• I trust that when I go on a site like Amazon, my data will actually be encrypted and not sold to scammers….our clients should feel the same way
• I particularly liked this tip sheet for social media privacy: • https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_0Fn6B0sB1xNzRh

TWITTER #TRMA585
• Twitter was a new experience for me and I am still not sure what I will really use it for
• It is great for following companies, especially when you have a certain product or are waiting for the release of something
• It is also a great way to lead clients to a website of blog that you would like them to check out
• One of my favorite posts from more recently, regarding trauma resiliency• RT @SGRegina: Resilience is the ability to adapt
over time to life-changing situations & stressful conditions http://bit.ly/Hz6ezY#cmhchat
GOOGLE PLUS (G+)
• I had Google+ prior to this class but never really used it. Probably won’t after this class either as blogging sites and facebook is easier to handle
• Like how easy it is to get on Google hangouts and chat with people
• This was a great guide for better understanding G+• http://mashable.com/2011/07/16/google-plus-guide/
• Another plus about Google: They are upfront about their privacy policy changes • We’re making things simpler and we’re trying to be upfront
about it. Period
PROFESSIONAL FACEBOOK PAGES
• Facebook for me is mainly used for social networking with friends
• I will most likely never use Facebook with clients or peers. LinkedIn is a more trusted source for that
• Great Link:• http://blogs.psychcentral.com/private-practice/2011/08/fa
cebook-pages-for-therapists/• Some of my tweets from about Facebook Prof:• Just checked out the facebook page for Project
happiness:https://www.facebook.com/projecthappiness and found the quotes expiring #TRMA585
• Visited Stephanie's page on FB and was glad to see my privacy settings match how hers' ishttps://www.facebook.com/stephanieameagher?sk=wall #TRMA585
LEARNING FROM MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS & ORGANIZATIONS
• Absolutely Loved http://www.juliehanks.com/ for her layout and all the amazing tips she had on her page
• I really liked looking at the different twitter accounts and web pages that the professional counselors have. Their twitter accounts linked to some really great articles, especially ones that we could use with couples and with families.
• Clients can use an online secure form to contact the counselor rather than just using email which can not be confirmed 100% as confidential
BLOGS: BLOGGER, WORDPRESS, TUMBLR, POSTEROUS
• Haven’t done much so far with blogger but it is a great way to share our own personal thoughts and opinions with a lesser risk of offending someone
• We can use twitter to link people over to our blogs • Great way to talk about controversial and in-study treatment
ideas, new medications, and changing theories • Best sites• Blogger• Tumblr
• My main concern about blogging as a professional would be the same concern that I have about using any social networking site, and that is privacy.
PORTFOLIOS & PROFILES

MANAGING YOUR ONLINE IDENTITY
• Came across this during that week:• http://www.androidcentral.com/why-pr
ivacy-matters #TRMA585
• Use Google Alerts to have Google send you relevant information about a topic that you are really interested in, which for me was PTSD
• Hoot suite is a great tool for managing your social network, but it is not for everyone
• Looking for a particular tweet about a topic? • Use Topsy
WEBSITES & DOMAIN NAMES
• We all agreed that GoDaddy.com needs to change their commercials to be more relevant to what it is they actually are
• Super easy way to make a website and domain name: • http://www.thesitewizard.com/
gettingstarted/startwebsite.shtml• After graduation, these tools will be great
assets to have in order to create a website for a private practice and to get your name out there…..and you can use twitter to link people over to it
HAVING AN IMPACT
• “It isn’t who you know, but who knows you”• Ask yourself: “What impact do I want to make in the lives of
the people around me, for my clients, for my family, and for my friends?”
• We can all have an impact, just by having a presence online and through the variety of social networks • But are we prepared for the “fame” and the lack of
privacy• Extremely powerful – Kony 2012 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc&feature=youtu.be• Great article to read on what the internet is turning into• http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc&feature=youtu.be
GOALS & STRATEGIES
• Expand your networks on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter
• Great Tips:• http://alainawiens.wordpress.com/2012/01/26/a-social-
media-strategy-in-5-steps/• What is my goal for this coming year?• What is my goal after graduation?• How can social media help me to achieve those goals?
• Simple: HAVE A STRATEGY AND PUT IT USE!!
SLIDESHARE
• Slideshare is quick and simple to use and post your powerpoint presentations
• More classes should use it instead of passing around flashdrives
• Can be easily used with businesses and private practices and not just for sharing powerpoint presentations
• Check out this presentation : The Social Media Struggle for Nonprofits http://www.slideshare.net/Griner/the-social-media-struggle-for-nonprofits via @slideshare #TRMA585
FINAL THOUGHTS
• I learned a lot in this class. Even though I was already very familiar with computer technology and most of these sites, I had never used tumblr or blogger before and had never heard of slideshare.
• I will probably create a personal website after graduation, once I am settled down into an office somewhere in the great Pacific Northwest.
• Blogging is not only great for us as professionals to share our ideas but I think it would be an amazing tool to share with clients for self care and to de-stress…..one I think I will take up
