Colorado Silver Crash of 1893: Colorado experienced an economic boom with the establishment of the Bland- Allison Act in 1878 and the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1890, both of which required the federal government to purchase Colorado’s plentiful silver reserves. However, in 1893, President Grover Cleveland advocated for the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, and thus Colorado was no longer protected from the Coinage Act of 1873, which established gold as the standard. Colorado experienced an economic tragedy as silver prices plummeted. John Leonard “jack” Swigert, Jr. (1931-1982) A Colorado Native, Jack Swigert was the command module pilot on the Apollo 13 moon mission. Madeleine Albright (1936-) Born into a Jewish family in Czechoslovakia, Hitler’s rise forced Albright’s parents to take exile in the United Kingdom. In 1948, her family moved to Denver where her father was a professor of political science at the University of Denver. Albright later became the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and triumphed to become the first female Secretary of State under President Bill Clinton. Nikola Tesla in Colorado Springs (1899-1900) Tesla set up a laboratory in Colorado Springs in 1899 to experiment with electricity at high altitudes.
