Roosma has graduated from the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and earned a master’s degree in Strategic Studies. The college is the Army’s senior educational institution.

The 10-month curriculum of the Army’s senior officer school is designed to prepare and train offi-cers of all the U.S. military branches of service, foreign military officers, as well as senior civilian officials of federal agencies, to serve in top-level command and staff positions with the U.S. Armed Forces worldwide.

Roosma is a deputy chief assigned to the Defense Integrated Military Human Resources System Lifecycle, Management Division at Alexandria, Virginia. The lieutenant colonel has served in the military for 25 years.

She is the daughter of Garret G. Marguerite Roosma, Sr. of Wilcox Road, Arlington, Vermont.

The colonel earned her master’s degree in strategic studies from Army War College.

Army Staff Sgt. Jeremy R. Stocker has arrived for duty at Headquarters U.S. Army North, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas.Stocker is an operations battalion non-commissioned officer in charge, has served in the military for 16 years.

He is the son of Bruce and Susan Stocker of Route 125, Bridport, Vermont. His wife, Jessica, is the daughter of Charles Alexander of Burlington, Vermont. The sergeant is a 1993 graduate of Middlebury High School, Vermont.

Nearly 200 Participate in Hoosic River Ride

A bicycle ride through the Hoosic River watershed in Massachusetts, New York and Vermont attracted 186 riders and 20 volunteers on August 21, a record-setting number. According to Hoosic River Ride organizer Lisa Carey Moore, a combination of good weather and widespread, positive word-of-mouth about the event, in its sixth year, was responsible for a crowd that was half again as large as the previous high. “This is a lovely ride along the Hoosic River, through beautiful farmland mostly on lightly traveled roads,” said Carey Moore. “Once you do it you want to do it again, so the numbers increase.” The ride ben-efits the Hoosic River Watershed Association, a tri-state, Williamstown, Massachusetts-based river advocacy group.

Riders had a choice of 75-mile, 50-mile, 28-mile or eight-mile loops, crossing three covered bridges, passing the Bennington, Vermont Battle Monument, the Old First Church and other historic sites — as well as, on the longest run, climbing to Petersburgh Pass on the New York-Vermont border.

Lead sponsor for the ride was Heleocentric, Inc. of Williamstown. Other major sponsors were Cobble Hill Farm, Donovan & O’Connor, Greylock Animal Hospital, Mark A. Pullano DMD, and Jack Miller Contractors. Several other area businesses contributed as well.

Along with gorgeous scenery and river views, the ride, headquartered at Southern Vermont College in Bennington, featured aide stations, technical support, and a huge post-ride picnic. Volunteers are needed for the 2011 Hoosic River Ride.

Training for Cashiers Selling Beer, Wine or Liquor in Retail Outlet

The Vermont Department of Liquor Control (DLC) will be holding training for cashiers. The training is for anyone who is responsible for selling beer, wine or liquor in a retail outlet. The seminar is scheduled for Monday, September 13 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the VFW in Manchester Center. The VFW is located at 180 Depot Street in Manchester Center (across from Price Chopper). It is held on a first come, first served basis. Nominate an Outstanding Young PersonThe Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3)

is seeking nominations for its annual Youth Recognition Ceremony. Outstanding young people in the Hoosick community are recognized by HAYC3 each year for their volunteer service, community spirit and positive leadership abilities.

The recognition ceremony will take place during the 2nd Annual Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza. Recipients will be presented with an award certificate at the gazebo in Wood Park on Saturday, September 25 at noon. The public is welcome to attend to help honor these outstanding young people.

Explore Coves and MarshesExplore the coves and marshes of one of the Berkshires’ most beauti-

ful lakes on Sunday, September 5 from 8 a.m. to noon as you paddle across Lower Goose Pond to pristine Upper Goose Pond in search of ravens, hawks, herons, and a variety of songbirds. Eat a snack onshore and search for interesting plant and animal life along the Appalachian Trail. Your instructor is Rene Laubach, Sanctuary Director of the Berkshire Wildlife Sanctuaries.

Albany Berkshire Ballet Announces 2010 Nutcracker Auditions

The Albany Berkshire Ballet is holding open auditions for its 2010 Annual Nutcracker Tour of the Northeast. The Nutcracker tour will run from November 21 through December 19. Performances will take place at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, Burlington, Vermont; Collins Center for the Performing Arts, Andover, Massachusetts; Colonial Theatre, Pittsfield, Massachusetts; The EGG-Center for the Performing Arts, Albany, New York and City Stage and Symphony Hall, Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Pittsfield auditions will be held on Sunday, September 12, at the Cantarella School of Dance located at 116 Fenn Street Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Auditions are open to all local boys and girls age 4 and

up. The times for auditions are age-based: ages 8-11 runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., ages 12 and up runs from 1 to 3:30 p.m., and ages 4 to 7 runs from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The audition fee for children ages 4 to 5 is $10, and the audition fee for children ages 6 and up will be $15.

— by Susan J. Coons...looming in the distance...I can feel its approach...it’s loom-

ing off in the distance, but I know it’s coming! I know because the days are getting shorter. You know what I’m thinking about, don’t you? Yes, you do. First fall and then...and then winter! Oh, no! This week and for the next couple of weeks, I’m going to begin my summer wind-down and make the necessary phone calls for furnace cleaning, filling the tank (I only use one tank of oil for the winter since I have been using my pellet stove), and ordering pellets.

I have to paint the cellar door this week and take care of some trim-ming in the yard. I want to get the outside of my house and yard secure before the leaves fall and the snow flies.

In a few weeks the early mornings will be covered with blankets of fog along the streams and rivers as their warmth evaporates into the cooler morning air. And before you know it, we’ll be picking apples on brisk September afternoons and enjoying hot cider as we sit around the wood stove.

I enjoy autumn. The crisp air is invigorating and the colors are beautiful. It’s just that what follows is not my favorite season! About the only good thing about winter is that there’s wall-to-wall football on television! I start to count the hours of daylight in each from the winter solstice to spring.

I’ve tried many ways to keep the dark and gloomy days of winter from getting me down. I turn on my happy lights (soft, warm lights), I light all the candles, I play the Beach Boys, Abba, Frank, Rolling Stones, Beatles, symphonic and classical music, I draw and paint, and I work.

I like to bake in the winter. The wonderful aroma of pies or bread baking in the oven fills the house on those closed-in afternoons, while I lie back on the sofa and read my New Yorker.

I won’t think about having to bundle up and dig myself out to get to the trash can. I won’t think about what would happen if the power went out. I won’t think about how cold the kitchen is when I get up in the morning (sometimes 36 degrees). I won’t think about having to warm up the car every morning. I won’t think about the car not starting when the temperature is 20 below! I won’t think about falling on the ice! I won’t think about having to keep my dog, Jill, company when she goes out to do her business because she doesn’t like the cold any more than I do. I won’t think about boots on and boots off. OMG! I just remem-bered! I have to get my coats cleaned! CYA!

NeighborWorks of Western Vermont, a nonprofit housing organiza-tion will offer Homebuyer Education workshop at Bennington Free Library located at 101 Silver Street, Bennington on September 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The workshop is for anyone who is thinking about buying their first home, or just wants to know more about the home buying process.

The class, taught by NeighborWorks’ housing councilor, will walk participants through the process of purchasing a home. Topics covered include budgeting for homeownership, repairing credit, and assessing your readiness to buy. Participants also learn about grant availability for closing cost assistance, and special mortgage products. Expert guest speakers also talk to the class.

Participants are entitled to a free follow-up one-on-one counseling appointment to personally assess your credit report.

Young Anglers Fishing TournamentProvides Fun Morning of Family Fishing

On Sunday morning August 22, the Lake Lauderdale Improvement Association Inc., hosted their 14th annual young anglers fishing tourna-ment on beautiful Lake Lauderdale. Despite the threat of rain, 56 young anglers age 2 to 14 years old lined the county park shoreline for a fun morning of fishing, face painting, food and prizes. A total of 110 fish and one 24” stick were caught and released. The largest fish was a 14” large mouth bass that was caught by Reegan Muller, who also went on to win first prize in the 5 and under age group.

Thanks to the generosity and support from individual donations, Cambridge area businesses and several nationally known fishing com-panies, all young anglers received a prize for participating in this event. This annual event hosted by the Lake Lauderdale Improvement Association, Inc. provides a wonderful opportunity for families to enjoy a fun morning of fishing and fun. The 14th annual young anglers fish-ing contest also provided an opportunity for 11 little anglers to catch their very first fish!

Please take a moment and mark your 2011 calendar for the L.L.I.A. Inc., 15th annual young anglers fishing tournament which will take place on Sunday, August 21, 2011. The 2011 event will run from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and will feature the usual fun morning of fishing and face painting by mother and daughter team Patty and Gretchen Burch.

Local Clogging Company Seeks New Students

Wild Country Dance Studio, Inc. (also known as the Wild Country Cloggers) is pleased to announce that they are currently holding sign-ups for fall clogging classes.

Clogging is a traditional folk dance that descended from Irish step dancing and is the dance form that tap dancing originated from. What’s Old is New Again The Car Show Steering Committee of the Bennington Area Chamber

of Commerce, Bennington Rotary, and the Green Mountain Car Club are pleased to announce to the public that the Bennington Car Show will be returning to Bennington in 2011. This will be our last year down at the Track in Pownal. We want to thank all the wonderful people in Pownal who have made it such a pleasure. The Pownal Rescue Squad, Winchester’s Market, the Pownal Select Board, Stewarts, Chick and Doug, the Shriners, Tornabene’s, Jelley’s, John Armstrong, and all the rest of the businesses.

The Car Show move is a return to its roots. The fields at Willow Park have been restored by the Town of Bennington and will be ready for September 2011. We are very excited to be able to come home. There will be plenty of parking, room for cars, vendors, and food. The infrastructure that the Car Show had built in to the park will supply a lot of our logistical needs. Everyone is familiar with the site and remembers it fondly. It will be accessible to local restaurants and lodg-ings. Our wonderful volunteers will be able to get back and forth eas-

ily. Abutting neighbors like Nemer Automotive, Vermont Composites, Grace Christian School, NSK, and others are welcoming us back with much excitement. This will also place the Car Show back in close prox-imity to the Quilt Show now being held at the Mt. Anthony Middle School during the same weekend – always two weeks after Labor Day.

We want to thank Colgate Park who offered their gorgeous property. If only it had been a bit larger I think the Committee could have made it work. It was a tough decision for everyone. Melissa Morrison at the Holden Farm also would have worked with us to expand the Car Show Site out on Route 9 West. I have to say how nice everyone was to help us in our quest for the ultimate location. It’s good to know that so many people want to help keep Bennington on the map with community events.

Register Online for theHoosick Pumpkinpalooza 5K

Online registration is now being accepted for the Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, September 25, 2010. The race is sponsored by Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics and will be held rain or shine. Start and finish is in Wood Park on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. The course runs through the Village of Hoosick Falls and includes hills, turns and a lovely stretch along the Hoosic River.

To register online, visit www.hoosickyouth.org and follow the links to the Pumpkinpalooza event page. Online payment can be made via PayPal. To register by mail, print a registration form and send it in with your payment. Forms are also available at the Hoosick Area Youth Center, 115 Church Street, Hoosick Falls, during normal operating hours.

There is a discount for registering in advance and the first 50 paid registrants will receive an official race T-shirt. Only those who register by September 10 will be guaranteed their choice of shirt sizes, so regis-ter as soon as possible.

Race-day registration opens at 7:30 a.m. The race will begin at 9 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in both the walk and run categories. Medals will be awarded to top run-ners in several age categories. All participants are required to sign a waiver/release form.

Youth Fun RunFollowing the 5K race, a fun run for youth ages 12 and under will be

held. Participants will run along Main Street from Wood Park to the Town Athletic Fields. All finishers will receive a ribbon. Pre-registration is not required for the fun run.

PumpkinpaloozaHoosick Pumpkinpalooza is a pride and tradition initiative organized

Second Annual Apple Festival in Cambridge

Celebrate autumn, apples and award-winning pies at the Second Annual Apple Festival organized by the Cambridge Valley Chamber of Commerce. This outdoor event is set for Saturday, October 2 in Railroad Park on Main Street in Cambridge, New York, just east of the historic Cambridge Hotel.

Beginning at 10 a.m., the park will be filled with the scent of apple pies being tasted, gobbled and admired. The Chamber is organizing an Apple Pie Bake-off, open to all amateur bakers, budding chefs and chef wannabes (no professional bakers or chefs please). The winning contestant’s name will be placed on the Fall menu of the Cambridge Hotel and the recipe to be used by the Hotel for the season as the famous Pie ala Mode. The winner will be chosen by a combination of public voting and professional judging. Meet Jill and Alexandra

The story of Jill and Alexandra is heart-warming. Jill is less than one year old, a very happy, affectionate and unusually sweet cat. She came from a low income family who could not keep her but gave her plenty of affection. Alexandra is a 13 week old kitten rescued from a trailer park in Bennington. She is shy, very sweet and loving. Jill and Alexandra met at their foster home. Jill has taken the little one under her care and with her gen-tle, sweet personality managed to make Alexandra feel secure and loved. As a consequence, Alexandra is less shy and a happy kitten ready to be adopted. It would be great if both could go to the same home, but they are also available separately as well. Jill and Alexandra are being fostered by Celeste O’Malley at the Handsome Hound on Route 7A, and can be seen during the day by calling 802- 447-2333 for an appointment.

Francis of Assisi currently also has five other kittens available for adoption; Sonya, Chip, Bonita, Little One and Nicole.

Realtor of the YearThe Realtor of the Year is an

award given by the Southern Vermont Board of Realtors each year to a Realtor nominated by their peers.This year, that honor was bestowed upon Troy Richardson of RE/MAX Maple Leaf Realty in Bennington. “It is an honor to be recognized for volunteering within the community,” said Troy.

The realtor of the year recogniz-es realtor spirit defined as the faith-fulness and willingness to support the articles and principles designed to distinguish realtors, activity within the Southern Vermont Board of Realtors, activity within the state and national association, civic activity and business accomplishments.

Troy has demonstrated accomplishments in all of these areas. Troy has co-owned RE/MAX Maple Leaf Realty since late 2007, is the cur-rent President and past Treasurer of the Bennington Catamount Rotary, is President-Elect of Catamount Rotary Charities, serves on the Board of Directors of the Southern Vermont Board of Realtors, Northern New England Real Estate Network, Career Development Center Building Trades Department, and was appointed by the Bennington Select Board as Commissioner representing Bennington on the Bennington County Regional Commission.

Through his career in real estate, he has also served on the Board of Directors of the Vermont Association of Realtors, the Vermont Real Estate Information Network and has served as a voting delegate to the National Association of Realtors in New Orleans.

Troy has been involved in fundraising in the area by bringing the RE/MAX hot air balloon to Bennington twice to raise funds for American Cancer Society Relay for Life, participating in Bowl for Kid’s Sake for Big Brothers and Big Sisters, volunteering at the 100 for $100 art event downtown, Catamount Rotary Pancake Breakfast, and assisted with the Catamount Rotary Moonlight in Vermont event in 2008 and this com-ing October 2010. Troy has also raised funds for the past three years for a New Orleans based program called Food for Friends, which provides meals to those afflicted with and affected by HIV and AIDS.

Other volunteer activities include participating in Spirit of Sharing, Warm the Children and serving as a moderator for online real estate discussion forums, sharing and exchanging ideas with real estate prac-titioners nationwide.

In the interest of educating the public about realtors, Troy has co-hosted over 75 weekly broadcasts of a radio show called Real Estate Today on WBTN-AM in Bennington.

Troy has achieved the professional designations of Accredited Buyer Representative, e-Pro and gained his broker license in 2008, providing further proof that continuing education is so important in this busi-ness.

The Realtor of the Year from each regional area in Vermont is then nominated for the State Realtor of the Year recognition awarded in September at the annual convention, held this year in Stratton.

Fish Available for Pond StockingThe Rensselaer County Soil & Water Conservation District’s Annual

Fish Stocking Program is currently taking orders for Rainbow and Brook Trout, as well as Largemouth Bass, Channel Catfish, Fathead Minnows and Crayfish!

Call the Conservation District at 518-271-1740 for an order form with more information on stocking.

Orders will be taken up to September 24, with the distribution to be held on October 1, at 1:00 p.m.

The fish will be distributed in the parking lot of our Agriculture & Life Sciences Building in Troy. A fish-stocking permit is required through NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. This per-mit is available free of charge and will last for five years. Fall is a great time to stock your pond!

Trout do best in spring-fed or deeper ponds. Bass and Catfish can tolerate a lot of conditions. With trout you can expect to restock every three years, with bass usually reproducing on their own. Again this year we have fish food. With fish pellets you can get a tremendous increase in growth rates. Don’t wait, call for an order blank! The Fish Stocking Order Blank is online again this year.
