The communities of New Skete will be hosting a Sacred Harp Singing on Monday evening March 8 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The singing will be held at the monastery’s Holy Wisdom church at the end of New Skete Lane, 4 miles East of Cambridge. This event is free and all are welcome to participate in the singing, or come to listen.

Special guests will include Sacred Harp singers from Poland. These students of the American singing tradition will be in the Northeast for two weeks from March 4-18. For part of their stay, Cambridge area residents will host the Poles in order for them to attend Sacred Harp singings in Clifton Park and Cambridge, New York, as well as the Bennington College and Smith College singings.

During the last two years sing-ing masters from the Northeastern U.S. have been travelling to Poland to teach shape note singing from the Sacred Harp tunebook. Among those teachers were singing masters Jesse Pearlman Karlsberg of Troy and Allison Schofield of Chatham.

Allison raised funds to offset the Poles’ travel expenses by selling her artwork.

The largest singing event the Poles will attend is the Western Massachusetts Sacred Harp Convention on Saturday and Sunday March 13 and 14 in Northampton, Massachusetts. Last year more than 400 Sacred Harp singers sang both days in one of the largest singing conventions in the country.

the Bennington Banner: top of page, “Yankee should be closed”; at the bottom of the same page, “Obama to announce loan for new nuke plant.” I have heard a few people spouting the clean power produced by nuclear power. None of them talk of the by-product left behind. Vermont Yankee has a few spent fuel rods it doesn’t know what to do with and they should be protected so our enemies can’t get them. I have a solution for them. If this power is so clean, store the rods in the basements of the White House, the Capital building, the FBI, CIA headquarters and the Pentagon. Hopefully these places are well protected.

Senator Sears has long been a champion for the rights of women, especially sur-vivors of domestic and sexual violence. His deliberate, mea-sured approach to controversial issues has resulted in some of the most important new laws in our state’s criminal justice sys-tem. He has been a leader on issues ranging from prevent-ing domestic violence to cre-ating the sex offender registry, and his work and leadership has impacted the lives of countless survivors of violent crime. The bills in question have generated intense debate, drawing attention away from Senator Sears’ original intent in introducing S.273: to acknowledge the terrible trauma to a woman of losing a pregnan-cy as a result of a violent crime. I hope that in the future we can continue a civil, compassionate conversation about how best to protect the rights and safety of all Vermonters.

Sacred Harp singing, a non-denominational community musical and social event, empha-sizes participation, not perfor-mance. The four-part a capella singing is a lively and unique American tradition, with roots in colonial New England and more recently the deep Southeastern U.S. This event is free and open to the public. No prior musical training required. Any type, qual-ity, or range of voice will find a comfortable and important place within the harmonies.

MAU Lights Out Against Hoosick Falls

The Mount Anthony high school boys’ basketball team defeated the Hoosick Falls Panthers on Monday, February 15 by a score of 58-39 as Mount Anthony’s outside game proved to be too much for the visitors. The Patriots were led by senior guard Kyle Callanan, who scored a game-high 32 points from seven 3-point field goals. Alongside Callanan, Tanner Darwell converted three shots from the outside for nine points throughout the night. Leading the Panthers were Kevin McMahon with 15 points and Tanner Williams with 11. The win for the Patriots hopes to build momentum after a tough loss to Burr & Burton last week. The boys follow up at home on Wednesday against the Rutland Red Raiders, who beat Mount Anthony earlier in the year, and again on Friday at home against the Brattleboro Colonels.

Lady Patriots in Unfamiliar Grounds

The Mount Anthony Lady Patriots basketball team saw their season come to an early end with a loss to the visiting Hartford on February 12. Not qualifying for the post-season is a first for the Lady Patriots since Leo Reynold’s reign began. The final score was 64-52, which pushed the Patriots to a final record of 4-16. The Patriots were led by sophomore Abby Iannotti with 19 points and seven from Kourtney Hewitt. The visiting Hartford Hurricanes were led by three scorers in double-digits: Stacey Schellong, Stephanie Parker, and Sarah Illingworth. The loss brings high school basketball to an end for six seniors as the Patriots look to rebound for next year.

Chamber Breakfast MeetingPlease join us on Wednesday, February 24 for our first Breakfast

Mayor Alcombright will be speaking about his vision for collabora-tive development and growth efforts here in Northern Berkshire, along with what is happening in the business scene in North Adams.

The breakfast menu will include coffee, decaf, tea, orange juice, break-fast breads and muffins, scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, assorted toast and fresh cut fruit.

MASS MoCA will be offering free tours of the LeWitt exhibition and/or the galleries to anyone who can stay for a little bit after the break-fast. No need to sign up in advance.

Cost for the breakfast is $15 for members, $20 for non-members and will be held at Lickety Split at MASS MoCA from 7:30 - 9 a.m.

Firehouse Breakfast BenefitThe Bennington Fire Department is offering a Pancake Breakfast on

Sunday, February 28 and Sunday, March 14 at the Bennington Firehouse to benefit 11 year old Sierra White, who is in need of two new hips.

Serving time is from 8 to 11 a.m. for this all-you-can-eat breakfast. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. All proceeds will go to the Sierra White family.

Please join the Village of Hoosick Falls, HOORWA, and Landworks for a community workshop to discuss and share your ideas for the future of the Greenway through the 2.5 mile segment in Hoosick Falls on Wednesday, February 25, at 6 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 70 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, New York.

Your continued support is needed in this time of economic troubles. Monies have been set aside for this endeavor so its a matter of getting on board, starting the ball rolling, and adding some “stimulus” to our Community. This park will be a major attraction to our Hoosick area and is only a “win-win” situ-ation.

...park it...New York Governor

Patterson is climbing out on a limb and he has placed the saw in the wrong place...behind him! First, he wants to hold back state tax refund checks to New York State tax-payers. That is outrageous. Folks depend on those checks to pay bills, and spend some of it, in the state! I’d be surprised if he can get away with that.

The second thing he wants to do to help balance the budget is close many state parks. This in a time when the only way so many folks can get away for an afternoon or weekend is to take the family out for a camping trip or picnic due to cuts in salaries, the high cost of gasoline, food, lodging, etc.

The two closest State Parks he wants to close are Thatcher Park in Albany and Bennington Battlefield Park in Walloomsac. I know this might not bother you if you are a Vermont resident, but the names of your ancestors might be on those bronze plaques that visitors from all over the country come to visit. It benefited Bennington tourism to have the Battle Monument located in Bennington, and I don’t want to start another border war over this. But the battle did take place in Walloomsac, New York. Prisoners were marched to the Dewey House, now the Walloomsac Inn in North Bennington, and jailed in the barn. It’s all very historic, and were it not for the success of the Battle of Bennington perhaps the success at Saratoga, often referred to as the “turning point of the Revolutionary War,” might have been different. I am very sad that the Governor of New York wants to close down this historic park. Perhaps he and the State Legislature are unaware of its importance in the history of our country.

Harking back to much more lean times for my own family when our children were growing up, we spent many weekend afternoons packing a picnic basket and taking hikes in the foothills behind our house in Pasadena or up at Mount Wilson; camping for three or four days at a time in Death Valley, or at the beach. It was very inexpensive and we were out of the house.

Again, it seems to be the guy with less to spend who has to make the biggest sacrifice. He or she can’t afford to fly the family to Disneyworld. Instead the family plans a get-away close to home, and now even an afternoon picnic in a local state park is cut off from their access.

If the governor and state legislature are serious about cutting “fat” from the New York State Budget, then they should look into the vast number of state employees who are adept at conning the system with exorbitantly high salaries and padded pensions for themselves and their buddies.

Susanism: You know it’s time to clean the refrigerator when you don’t recognize what’s in some of the containers (it smells bad and is probably all blue and fuzzy) and you have run out of storage dishes.

St. James Lenten Film SeriesSt. James Episcopal Church is offering a full schedule of Friday eve-

ning movies and discussion throughout Lent. These films are all “movie theatre” films dealing with atonement, with themes of reconciliation and return. The series begins on February 26 with the film “Life as a House,” a story of reconciliation of broken relationships. Nominated for a Golden Globe, this is a heart touching film of family relationships and so much more. It stars Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas, Mary Steenburgen and other greats, and is rated R. The evenings begin at 5:30 with a light supper, followed by the movie at 6:30. These movies and discussion are free and open to the public. Rotary Four-Way Test Speech ContestHigh school students have an exciting opportunity to tell people what

they think and win cash prizes!The Bennington and Catamount Rotary Clubs are holding the Four-

Way Test Speech Contest on Wednesday, March 17 in the Rotary Room of the Bennington Free Library from 7 to 9 p.m.

High school students in grades 9 through 12, living in Arlington, Bennington, North Bennington, Pownal, Shaftsbury, and Woodford are eligible to enter. Home-schooled and exchange students are welcome.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three speakers; $300 for first, $200 for second and $100 for third. The first place winner will be eligible for the District competition on Sunday, April 18.

The contest is based on the Four-Way Test, a set of values that Rotarians use to set high ethical standards. The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions:

“Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all con-cerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be benefi-cial to all concerned?”

Students choose their own topics, and deliver a short five to seven minute speech on the chosen topic. However, speeches must address the values of The Four-Way Test.

Midwinter Celebration and Live Auction

Don’t miss this fun evening out – The School of Sacred Heart St. Francis is hosting its second annual Live Auction and Midwinter Celebration on Saturday, February 27, at the Bennington Elks Club.

Free Meals in CambridgeFebruary 27 will be the second time this year that free meals are held

in Cambridge. Meals are held on the last Saturday of each month with the exception of November and December at First Baptist Church in Cambridge from noon to 1 p.m. This month’s menu will be ham, creamed potatoes, vegetable, rolls, New Skete cheesecake (of course) and beverages. The meal will be provided by New Skete Parish. The monthly meals are organized by First Baptist Church of Cambridge,

First Baptist Church is located on West Main Street between Glens Falls National Bank and the IGA store. Reservations are not necessary. Take-outs will be available for those unable to attend at 1 p.m. provided everyone has been fed. If there are questions or in case of inclement weather with possibility of cancellation, call Beverly at 518-677-3327. The next community meal will be held on March 27.
