Perhentian The islands of Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Perhentian Kecil are one of Malaysia’s top tourist attractions. They are surrounded by turquoise blue sea and lined with palm trees and white sand beaches providing an idyllic tropical island getaway.

The Perhentian Islands consist of the 2 main inhabited islands and a few smaller uninhabited islands, Perhentian Besar being the larger of the two. Both islands are very popular with tourists are still not yet very built up. Perhentian Besar is the more expensive of the two islands with the more upmarket accommodation and resorts, while Perhentian Kecil is cheaper and caters more for backpackers.

Climate

The climate in this area is tropical so although most of the year is it lovely hot beach weather it does have a monsoon season. This is from the end of October to the end of March and during this season all accommodation and tourist businesses shut down and most people leave the islands. So the dive season runs from Early April to Late October.

Water temperature during this time varies from 27C-32C with the coldest water temperature being during the middle of the monsoon and raising back up to 30C plus for the start of the dive season. This means that it is comfortable to dive in board shorts and a rash vest, or if you are prone to the cold then a 3mm shorty wetsuit. This beautifully warm water lasts all the way through the season and only starts dropping back down at the start of the monsoon at the end October/beginning of November.

Marine Conservation

The islands are home to many nesting hawksbill and green turtles, this number has drastically reduced over the last few years due to oil spills from oil tankers and oil platforms not too far away. The Department of Fisheries have started a turtle hatchery on the island to help with this problem. There are also Turtle conservation volunteer programs which you can take part in whilst on the island which monitor and protect nests and also educate local children about the need to save our oceans and marine life.

Many dive schools conduct regular reef clean up days and also take part in other larger reef check and conservation efforts.




The Sugar Shipwreck « Union Star » Sugar Wreck is a sunken freighter located at the west of Pulau Perhentian Kecil and resting 18m below the surface. It sank in 2000 during the monsoon period. As the name suggests, it was previously used for transporting sugar and currently, it is the house for many marine life.

Reef adaptation can be seen here as already there are corals and shells growing on the hull. Big schools of snappers, jacks and trevally circle the hulk and myriad smaller fish shelter inside. In its walls and deck, you can find many scorpion fish.

You can also see bamboo sharks and blue spotted sting rays underneath the cargo doors, located in the back side of the wreck.




It's a very easy wreck that allows easy penetration in the cargo bay. For experienced divers, penetration is also possible in the engine room, wheelhouse and cabins.

It's one of the farthest spots in the Perhentian, so many dive centers will not go if the boat is not full.

GENERAL INFORMATIONS

- Tariffs do not include the National Park fees. Admission for Thai: 40 Baht (0.90 €). Admission for foreigner: 400 Baht (8.80 €). Admission for child (Thai & Foreigner alike): 50% discount. Extra for Diver (Thai & Foreigner alike): 200 Baht (4.40 €) per diving day. - Discount will be made only from our published brochure prices. - No discount on hotels and tours. Our prices are already discounted. - Discounts are not accumulative. - Thailand Diving reserves the right to change discounts, exchange rates and prices without prior notice as well to correct mistakes in printing and pricing. BOOKING PROCEDURES AND CANCELLATION POLICY

Booking procedures: All reservation MUST be confirmed to Thailand Diving Co Ltd, by letter, voucher, fax or Email. Thailand Diving Co Ltd will confirm all reservation requests within 24 hours. In case immediate confirmation is not possible, principals will be informed of the booking status. Option: A booking will be temporarily reserved for 7 days to arrange travel. After 7 days of non-deposit or full payment of service fee, we may consider NULL and VOID the confirmed reservation and be free of the allotment space. Reservation and deposit: A reservation is only final after the receipt of a 50% deposit or the full payment in the case of bookings within 60 days before commencement of services. Full Payment: The balance of 50% is due no later than 30 days prior to commencement of services and must be paid to Thailand Diving Co Ltd in Euros or Thai Baht by cash, credit card or “Swift Telex transfer”. Cancellation policy: More than 60 days before the commencement of services we retain the 30% deposit, between 60 and 30 days 50% of the total service fee and within 30 days we retain 100% of the total service fee. We strongly recommend obtaining cancellation insurance and travel insurance covering the activities and sports they intend to undertake.
