TRiO SCHOLAR OF THE MONTH

Meet one of our TRiO Scholar Students:
Hi, my name is Crystal Bustos.
I live in Valley Stream, New York, which is located in Nassau County and I
also live with my mom and two sisters. My future plan as of now is to finish
my schooling and become a nurse, so I can help people
who are really sick. In five years I hope to be finishing
the nursing program and looking for a job in a hospital
as a nurse.
In NCC there are many things, but I like the teachers
and how big the place is. I am currently in the TRIO
program. I am an active TRIO participant and TRIO
has helped me in many ways. One of them is how
TRIO offers one-on-one free math tutoring which helped me prepare for my
statistics exams. TRIO also has fun gathering opportunities.
My advice for all new students is that college isn’t scary as it seems. Yes, it
is much more independent responsibility compared to high school. What
helped me was being on the top of the teacher syllabus, so I can be mentally
ready for what I’m expecting and dates I put in my calendar for the course.
Also, you should be able to schedule time to study, take good notes and be
in class for attendance. Finally teachers are understanding. Don’t be afraid
to talk to them.

Secrets towards Success:
Submitted by Karen Granville, TRiO Grant Technician
Knowing what type of learning style you prefer, may help you determine what type of
study skills work best for you. Some additional study skills you can use include:
Acronyms and mnemonics. A mnemonic is a method of organizing and mem-
orizing information, such as the colors in the rainbow: ROYGBIV (Red, Orange, Yel-
low, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet).
Exam strategies. One method developed through the Royal Literacy Fund
was the use of three different colors, such as, Black/Red/Green. BLAck --> BLAtant;
REd --> REference (REquired) Point, and GREen --> GREen Light or how to proceed.
Spacing (distributed learning). Spacing time between learning and reviewing
information, instead of cramming, gives the brain time to decipher and understand
what was heard or learned.
Time management, organization and lifestyle changes. A popular saying is
“life gets in the way” and it is so true. Obligations to family, friends and self, always
seem to get in the way of studying or coursework. Setting aside time daily to work on
homework, studying and reports, will help to keep you on task. Don’t let procrastina-
tion get a foothold in what you need to do. Organize your coursework to what is im-
portant and needs to be studied and worked on first, and can be done quickly. Next,
what needs to be done that is important, but time consuming. Last, what is the lowest
priority, complex, but not vital. Remember to get enough nutrition and sleep, or you
may find your mind not able to focus on what needs to be done. Going for a walk is a
perfect way to destress and think about what you just learned or what you need to do.
Study environment. Where you study is just as important as your learning
style. One person may need to study in a quiet environment such as a library or bed-
room, another may need music, and another may need noise in the background (TV,
radio, coffee shop).
Find which ones work for you. Remember, only YOU are responsible for what you
learn or don’t learn!
