This week I came across a quote by Jacques Derrida: “Religion is responsibility, or it is nothing at all.” That’s appropriate for a day like today, when Trinity Sunday and Father’s Day coincide.

Father’s Day is both a beautiful and painful day for many. I am fortunate to have a loving father and two wonderful fathers-in-law. I have been blessed with many wonderful male mentors and role models throughout my life. And yet, it has been men, hands down, who have caused the most pain in my life as well.

This is a difficult tension to hold on Trinity Sunday and Father’s Day. In my Baptist heritage and upbringing, we talked a great deal about God and even more about Jesus. The Holy Spirit was oddly left out of the conversation most of the time.

After college, I had an opportunity to live in Manchester, England, for two years while serving with a missions organization. It was there that I met Ian, a vicar with the Church of England. The Church of England has a robust understanding of the Trinity and incorporates the Trinity into its liturgy in ways I was not used to as a Baptist. Ian helped deepen my

understanding of the Trinity, reframing the image as Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer.

Ian had a challenging relationship with his own father and struggled to refer to or see God as father. Ian asked me questions like, “How is God as Creator creating or revealing something new, even today? In what ways do we need to look to Jesus as Redeemer to redeem or restore what is distorted? How might the Spirit as Sustainer sustain us when we feel we just cannot go on or no longer have hope?” His reframe of the Trinity was healing for me during a difficult season of life.

One of the hymns we will sing today is Rescue the Perishing by Fanny Crosby. A theme I hear throughout this song is that of responsibility. God is holistically at work in the world and invites us to take part in this holistic work.

As we prepare for worship today, what might the Triune God seek to create, redeem and sustain in our lives? And how is God inviting us to be a creative, redeeming and sustaining presence in the world?

Trinity Sunday

Chiming of the HourThe people of Wilshire gather this morning to worship God.

In order for this service of worship to be focused upon that purpose, please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches.

Prelude Fantasia on nicaea arr. James Pethel

Opening Sentences Jessica Capps / Tiffany Wright

The divine mystery is that God is one and yet God is three. We worship God in oneness today and experience God in the fulness of the Trinity. You may speak of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Or as Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. Some Christians speak of God as Source, Word and Spirit. Or as Parent, Child and Love. Whatever words you use to give voice to the mystery of God’s presence among us, you are invited into this hour of exploration as we give praise to the God who has made us, give thanks to the God who has redeemed us and pray through the God who comforts and guides us.

Giving of Tithes and Offerings

Through Wilshire’s Unified Budget, we as a congregation share our gifts for God’s work at Wilshire and far beyond. Rather than having to make hard choices about each person’s favorite ministry or pet cause, we have agreed to share together in our generosity so that all the church’s identified needs are met. When you give to the Unified Budget, you empower our missions and ministries in a trusted and verified manner.

+Gospel Reading — John 16:12–15 Gayle Lawson / Phill Martin

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

“Aún tengo muchas cosas que deciros, pero ahora no las podéis soportar. Pero cuando El, el Espíritu de verdad, venga, os guiará a toda la verdad, porque no hablará por su propia cuenta, sino que hablará todo lo que oiga, y os hará saber lo que habrá de venir. El me glorificará, porque tomará de lo mío y os lo hará saber. Todo lo que tiene el Padre es mío; por eso dije que El toma de lo mío y os lo hará saber.”

Esta es la palabra del Señor.Gracias a Dios.

Postlude Guide Me Ever, Great Redeemer arr. J. Bert Carlson

Candy McComb, guest directorBill Jernberg, guest organist

Today’s hymn story: Fanny Crosby, author of today’s hymn “Rescue the Perishing,” has been called the queen of gospel songwriters. She did not begin writing gospel songs until she was 44, yet she produced more than 8,000 before her death at age 95. She wrote the following account of writing “Rescue the Perishing”: “It was written in the year 1869. Many of my hymns were written after experiences in New York mission work. This one was thus written. I was addressing a large company of working men one hot summer evening, when the thought kept forcing itself on my mind that some mother’s boy must be rescued that night or not at all. So I made a pressing plea that if there was a boy present who had wandered from his mother’s home and teaching, he should come to me at the end of the service. A young man of 18 came forward and said, ‘Did you mean me? I promised my mother to meet her in heaven, but as I am now living that will be impossible.’ We prayed for him and he finally arose with a new light in his eyes and exclaimed in triumph, ‘Now I can meet my mother in heaven, for I have found God.’ A few days before, Mr. Doane had sent me a theme for a new song, Rescue the Perishing, based on Luke 14:23. While I sat in the mission that evening, the line came to me “Rescue the perishing, care for the dying.” I could think of nothing else that night. When I arrived home, I went to work on the hymn at once, and before I retired it was ready for the melody.”

The flowers on the chancel today are given in honor of all of the fathers in our congregation with a prayer that each may feel the spirit of our heavenly Father as you serve your families.

All guests are invited to a coffee reception in the James Gallery immediately after the service.

Welcome to Wilshire today. If you are a guest with us today, we welcome you warmly to our congregation. We would like to get to know you and tell you more about our church. Please take a Response Card from the pew rack, fill it out and place it in the offering plate when it comes by.

This Is My Story

The summer “This Is My Story” series for Wednesday noon resumes this week, June 19, with a presentation by Associate Pastor Mark Wingfield on “Castles and Cathedrals,” drawn from his sabbatical travels in Wales, England, France and Italy. The following week, June 26, Mark will present a program on biblical (and non-biblical) art with faith inspiration also gleaned from his recent travels. Everyone is invited to lunch in Community Hall beginning at 11 a.m., followed by the program at noon.

Youth Choir mission tour

Wilshire’s Youth Choir is gone this week on a mission choir tour to Memphis, Tenn., and Birmingham, Ala. They will sing at the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship General Assembly Commissioning Service in Birmingham on Thursday, June 20. As in years past, the choir will present its home concert next Sunday night, June 23, after tour. Everyone is invited to this concert in the Sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. Youth Choir alumni will be invited to join the Youth Choir in singing Psalm 139.

Menu for June 26 (in James Gallery): Chicken cacciatore, grilled Italian sausage, egg noodles, red potatoes and carrots, green beans, Parmesan baked tomatoes, salad bar, dessert bar. Food on the Move cancelled Despite Wilshire’s best efforts, the management at the Verandas apartments decided they no longer want Food on the Move at their site. Therefore, all summer missions activities scheduled there have been cancelled, including donation collections and weekend food bag packing days. “A huge thank you to those of you who have volunteered your time and resources to this ministry over the course of the last five years,” said Heather Mustain, minister

of missions and advocacy. Wilshire’s summer missions focus will turn toward the Dallas Responds Respite Center, serving asylum-seekers passing through Dallas on their way to sponsor homes across the country.

Dallas Responds Respite Center

Wilshire is a leader among local faith communities seeking to bring a message of hope to asylum-seekers passing through Dallas on their way to sponsor homes across the country. The new influx of arrivals in Dallas has happened because of overflowing conditions at the detention centers along the Texas-Mexico border. Most asylum-seekers coming through Dallas are here for less than 60 hours before traveling to their next destinations. While here, a coalition created by Faith Forward Dallas greets them at the Dallas Responds Respite Center, which is housed at Oak Lawn United Methodist Church. Volunteers (with existing background checks on file at Wilshire) are needed for a variety of tasks, and certain donated items are needed. Because the needs are changing rapidly, watch Wilshire’s Facebook page for regular updates. To learn more, contact Abbey Adcox at [email protected].

WOW! Family Day at the Lake Women of Wilshire are invited to bring themselves and their families to Cedar Creek Lake on Saturday, June 29, at 10:30 a.m. Hosted by Sheri Brooks and Sue Fisette. Hot dogs and burgers will be provided. Bring a side dish and drinks. Please bring life vests for kids 12 and under. Directions will be sent to those attending before the event. Sign up by June 23 at wilshirebc.org/registration.

Condolences to: Barbara Gass and Joan Gass on the death of their grandmother, Mamie English, June 5. Sarah and Allan Stafford on the death of Sarah’s sister, Betsy Brown of Houston, June 6.
