What do I do in Church? Last month in our newsletter I shared my surprise in the full service nature of gas stations in New Jersey. I couldn't do it myself! It's against the law to pump your own gas in New Jersey. You must be served. I compared this to how God gives us everything we need in the Divine Service. God does the work in the Service. Forgiveness, of sins, life and salvation fly at us from the Word of service. This month we set out to answer the question what do I do in church also known as the Divine Service? The quick answer is "receive God's gifts." The less quick answer is found in a lifetime of spirituality and training in right-eousness -- God's righteousness that He gives us. We listen. When God speaks, something happens. He called the world into existence and things are always as He says. In our services we hear God's promises. This is the primary thing we do, is hearing, or listening. But it isn't just listening with our ears, it is listening with our minds as we take all we know of God as He reveals Himself to us through the Word and we live it in our minds. This takes place in worship services. We tell God what He has told us. Our services are filled with singing, prayers, psalms and responses. These are most often us reminding God of what He has promised us in His Word. In the story of the Canaanite woman (Matt 15:21-28) we see this. We see an undeserving person calling God to ful-fill His word. The woman, called a dog by Jesus, says (basically), "Ok, I'll be a dog, just give me a scrap!" God loves to give us the scraps and more than the scraps, He sets a table before us where our cup overflows. He loves to be re-minded of that which He has done and has promised to do for us. We thank God. Part of our telling God what has told us, is thanking Him for doing what He said He would do. Our response to the love of God is fueled by the love of God. It flows naturally from the filling we receive at the Divine Service. The undeserved grace brings in us unexpected responses. We give thanks with our words, our songs, our prayers and our offerings. Offering back to God these things we are really giving Him things that are already his. Like a child bringing a toy back to a parent and thinking it's the best thing in the world. God receives our unnecessary thanks and our unnecessary things with love. The length of this article would become bookish to begin to unpack and enu-merate what takes place in the Divine Service. Consider joining in one of our Bible study opportunities including our new Wednesday morning class on Romans starting September 3rd at 9:45. The main thing to remember is that God is the doer; we are the ones who receive and respond with the love with which He has first loved us. Come be filled to overflowing. See you in Church.

News from Mr. Landskroener, Principal Off to a Great Start

The 141st year of Lutheran Education at Trinity began on August 25th with 163 students enrolled for the year. We welcomed Miss Shidner and Miss Butler as newly called church workers to teach 1st and 2nd grade. Mrs. Underwood and Mrs. McDonald joined us as aides in Preschool and Kindergarten. Mrs. Higgins and Mr. Tucker are sharing duties in the kitchen. Families are still contacting us to enroll and we are looking forward to a growing enrollment. Thank you Trinity congregation, for all of your prayers, good will, financial support, and the commitment of providing a Lutheran education for the children of our congregation and the Toledo vicinity. We are working hard to “Share Christ at all times and in all places”. Trinity Night @ American Table

Our first family night of the year will be held on Tuesday, September 23, from 4-7pm at the American Table on Glendale across from WalMart. Coupons will be available on Sunday, September 21st that will give 10% from your bill back to Trinity. Make plans now to join us at American Table. Accreditation Update

Our accreditation team will be visiting on November 17th and 18th. They will checking us out and will determine if our self-study and goals will lead us to be a stronger and more vibrant school. Our four main goals are: enhancing our academic curriculum, expanding our extra curricular opportunities, operating in a sound fiscal manner, and marketing ourselves both within the congregation and the community. Information please

If you know of a community event or gathering that Trinity could be involved with please let me know. We are putting together our marketing calendar and want to plan for these events, parades, fairs, etc. Just give me a call in the office at 419-385-2301 or email me at [email protected]. If you ever have a question about the school, feel free to contact me or stop by and chat. I want our congregation to be well informed so you feel comfortable talking about Trinity with your friends and neighbors and recommending Trinity for a church and school home.

Greenrose Property

Update

Here is a quick update on the Greenrose property. During the June Voter’s meeting a resolution was made to solicit closed bids to sell the Greenrose property. A bid was received and accepted on July 8th from a Trinity member for $59,001. The closing for the property was completed on July 30th. The following is a summary of the financial resolution for this property (amounts rounded to the nearest $10).

$119,430 - Amount of outstanding loan owed to District $ 59,000 – Amount of accepted bid $ 60,430 – Remaining Trinity loan obligation before closing costs 5,130 – Real estate back taxes and closing costs incurred by Trinity $ 65,560 – Total amount Trinity owes for loan and closing $ 16,440 – Expenses incurred by Trinity since acquisition of the property $ 82,000 – Total of new loan refinanced

The district agreed to allow Trinity to finance the incurred expenses and then reimbursed the $16,440 back to Trinity. This money will be used to help with the general budget cash flow. The refinanced loan from the district is at 3.533% rate amortized for 7 yrs and 10 months which equates to a payment of $1,000 / month.

Respectfully Submitted,

Brian Leimkuehler, Church Vice President

Newsletter September 2014

LUTHERAN WOMEN’S MISSIONARY LEAGUE MITES and MISSIONS

• LWML MITE SUNDAY is September 21st. Gathering Mites for Missions has been one of the objectives of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League for 72 years. Your Mite offerings actually reach out and personally touch the lives of others. Be a joyful giver! Your mites—coins or “quiet money” or a check made payable to Trinity LWML, may be placed into an envelope before depositing the gift into the large Mite Box in the narthex or near the gym door. Reuse the Mite Box you have at home or pick up another Mite Box and Ingathering envelopes for your gifts near the large Mite Box in the narthex or near the gym door. Mites received in July totaled 213.80 and in August the total received was $201.00. Pray for God’s blessings on all the national LWML and LWML Ohio District mission grants. • The LWML TOLEDO ZONE FALL RALLY will be held at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 13101 Five Point Road, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551, on Saturday, October 4, 2014. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., Opening Devotion at 9:30 a.m. and we will close about Noon. A brunch will be prepared by the ladies of Shepherd of the Valley to be served until 9:15 a.m. The program theme is “I am a Missionary or AM I a Missionary?” Our speaker is Mary Anne Hibbard, Deaconess, who along with 15 members from Trinity, recently returned from a short-term mission trip to Guatemala. The team held eye glass clinics and VBS while there. Ingatherings at the rally will be for Mites and the following items for MOST (Mission Opportunities Short Term) Ministries, Ann Arbor, Michigan: Dishtowels and Dishcloths, School Supplies (pens pencils, crayons, markers), Flashlights and Batteries (all sizes), and JOY Dish Detergent. (The Joy detergent works best to clean eye glasses.) Used eye glasses may be brought to church at any time. Mark your calendar now and plan to join us. • DONATION DAY at FORT WAYNE SEMINARY: Each year the Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, holds a Donation Day. This event is sponsored by the Seminary Guild and the LWML Indiana, Michigan and Ohio Districts. This year, Donation Day will be held on October 14, 2014. There is a registration fee which includes lunch. More information will be in the weekly News and Notes as it becomes available.

The following items will be accepted for the Seminary’s Food and Clothing Bank and delivered on Donation Day: for Deaconess Students, new or gently used Navy Blue jackets, skirts, slacks and cardigan sweaters; for our future pastors and their families, gently used and clean clothing, baby items (diapers, etc.), household goods and canned, boxed food items, paper products and hygiene items. NATIVE AMERICAN OUTREACH TRAINING CENTER-FAIRBANKS, ALASKA

For more than 25 years, the Lutheran Indian Ministries, a ministry of Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots U.S., along with volunteers from the lower 48 states, have been reaching out to Alaska natives, bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ through VBS and servant projects. Seeds have been planted, relationships have been watered, and God is giving the growth. Pastor Dave and Rosemary Sternbeck moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, after making regular trips for two years to lay the groundwork for mission expansion. He is the first Native American LCMS pastor to graduate from the Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology (EIIT) program through Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. With a large home, the Sternbecks provide food and lodging for volunteers heading to villages. This home, the Alaskan Mission Training Center, will also serve as a center for cross-cultural training as well as for debriefing when the volunteers return. This grant will provide for the purchase of a vehicle to transport volunteers; to help furnish the Center with a conference table, chairs, large television, white boards, refrigerator/freezer, washer and dryer; and provide travel and lodging funds for Pastor Dave and Rosemary to make trips to the villages. Pastor Dave understands the challenges faced by Native people. Most do not come from families or marriages that are intact. They did not grow up in the Church or have spiritual leaders or mentors and most are very familiar with abuse. As Pastor Dave and Rosemary work with volunteers and build connections to the villages, they plan to bring Native men to their Center during the winter months for a time of encouragement, renewal and equipping so these men may return to their villages with a message of hope to their people. Pastor Dave has developed a program to address the devastating problems of domestic violence, abuse, and neglect in the Alaskan Native community. Another program is suicide awareness, especially among the young people. These young people are finding faith and a reason to continue living but, many struggle with being Christian and Native and this program helps them address and understand this issue and become more attuned to the warning signs of suicide. Pastor Dave says, “The fields are ripe for harvest.” The mission of Lutheran Indian Ministries is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with Native North American Nations, encouraging them to proclaim Christ’s kingdom to their own and to others.

1. with thanksgiving for a new school year. Please pray that students would return to their studies refreshed and with renewed dedication.

2. for students starting their first year of college, that they would find Christian friends and make good decisions while living away from home for the first time.

3. for recent college graduates, that they would find gainful employment as well as a church home where they can learn about God’s holy Word in all of its truth and purity.

4. for the Rev. Marcus Zill, who accepted the call in May to become the Synod’s full-time director of LCMS Campus Ministry. Please pray that God would give him wisdom and joy as he faces new challenges and opportunities.

5. for the parents of college students, especially those who have an empty nest for the first time. Pray that they would find joy and contentment in the midst of life’s changes.

6. for the approximately 175 LCMS U chapters around the country, that they would receive the support they need to effectively reach out to America’s college students.

7. that more congregations and individuals would become involved with their local LCMS U chapters or be led by God to start new ones.

8. for the 800,000-plus foreign students studying at American colleges and universities. Many come from countries where the Gospel is not freely preached. Pray that their time in the U.S. would provide the oppor-tunity for them to learn about Jesus.

9. that Lutheran college students would be bold witnesses to their faith in Jesus Christ, even when faced with pressure from peers and professors.

10. for our college students, who are pulled in many directions with the demands of school, work, friends, family and other activities. Pray that they would make their relationship with God a priority by setting aside time for group worship, Bible study and Christian service.

11. that young people would hunger for the absolute truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, instead of the empty things of this world.

12. for the growth of LCMS U on ur-ban college campuses and at commu-nity colleges, two fertile mission fields. Pray that the Lord would open doors to the spread of His Word in these places.

13. for the development of campus ministry programs at institutions of higher education around the world.

14. for all the dedicated staff and volunteers involved in campus minis-try, that God would energize them for their work and use them to plant seeds of faith that will continue to grow.

15. that God would bless and guide the work of all students involved in mis-sion work and volunteer opportunities both at home and abroad. Please pray that this time would be a blessing to them and others.

Remember God’s work through LCMS Campus Ministry as you pray:

Campus ministry — september 1–15 The challenges to Christians on the nation’s college campuses are well known. On practically every campus there are objections to the biblical worldview, doctrine, ethics and practices. Through The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s (LCMS) new campus ministry initiative, known as LCMS U, the ministry aims to encourage, support and help students, faculty and staff in their response to these challenges so they can boldly bear witness to Christ.
