CONFESSION
(L) God of wisdom and power, we confess that there are times when we find it difficult to see
beyond the foolishness of the cross to the sacrificial love that ended Jesus’ earthly life.
(C) Help us to see Jesus’ preparedness to die condemned, betrayed and deserted by fol-
lowers and friends, not as evidence of weakness but as a powerful sign of his self-giving
love. He endured the cross so that we would be empowered to live lives shaped by that
same self-giving love. Forgive us when we follow the wisdom of the world and find self-
serving love more to our liking.
(L) The Apostle Paul implores us to understand God’s values as revealed in the outpoured love
and life of Jesus. When we boast, we are to boast in the Lord.
(C) Forgive us when we boast about our achievements, our status, our authority,
our wisdom.
(L) Merciful God, we thank you that your wisdom and power enables us to grasp the true
meaning of the cross for they reveal the great depth of your love for the world. A love made
flesh in Jesus Christ - a love that thankfully will not let us go.
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
(L) Here the good news - the message about the cross is that in Jesus Christ we are empowered
to live new and forgiven lives.
(C) Thanks be to God!
PRAYER OF THE DAY (ALL) Lord God, your loving kindness always goes before us
and follows after us. Summon us into your light, and direct our steps in the ways of good-
ness that come through the cross of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

SONG “You’re My Light and My Salvation” by John Ylvisaker
Verse 1) You’re my light and my salvation, I won’t be afraid!
You’re the stronghold of my life, by you all things were made.
Foes attack me, hassle me but I will never fade,
For I move in the strength of the Lord.
Chorus: Do Lord, O Do Lord, O do remember me.
Do Lord, O do Lord, O do remember me.
Do Lord, O do Lord, O Do remember me,
Look away beyond the blue.
(continued on next page)

Verse 2) Though a host encamp against me, I will never fear!
Even though a war surrounds me you are always near.
One thing I have asked of you that I will seek for sure
Is to live in the house of the Lord.
Chorus
Verse 3) You will hide me in your shelter in the day of strife;
You’ll conceal me in your tent or set me on the height.
Now my head is lifted up above the storms of night,
So I’ll sing to the name of the Lord.
Chorus
FIRST READING: Isaiah 9:1-4 The northern tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali experienced defeat, but they are assured that their condi-
tion will be reversed when God makes a light-filled appearance. The joy they will experience will resem-
ble celebrations of great harvests, because God will deliver them from everything that diminishes or op-
presses them. The people in the northern parts of Israel have experienced "gloom" and "darkness" be-
cause of the destruction wrought by Assyrian military forces. To these people, the prophet announces the
shining of a great light of salvation.
But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into
contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glori-
ous the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. 2The people who
walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness —on
them light has shined. 3You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice
before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. 4For the yoke of
their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as
on the day of Midian.
SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 1:10-18
Paul calls on the Corinthians to end their dissensions and share the unified outlook of the gos-
pel. Discord arises when we forget that we belong not to human leaders or institutions but to
Christ who was crucified for us. Indeed, the unifying word of the cross of Christ is the center of
the gospel and the power of God's salvation.
10Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you
be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same
mind and the same purpose. 11For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there are
quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. 12What I mean is that each of you says, "I belong
to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." 13Has Christ
been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14I thank
God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15so that no one can say that you
were baptized in my name. 16(I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do
not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17For Christ did not send me to baptize but to pro-
claim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emp-
tied of its power. 18For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

GOSPEL FOR THE DAY: Matthew 4:12–23 Jesus begins his public ministry shortly after John the Baptist is imprisoned by Herod. He pro-
claims the nearness of God's reign and calls four fishermen to be his first disciples.
12Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 13He left Nazareth
and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14so that
what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15"Land of Zebulun, land of
Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles — 16the people who
sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death
light has dawned." 17From that time Jesus began to proclaim, "Repent, for the kingdom of
heaven has come near." 18As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who
is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea — for they were fishermen. 19And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fish for people." 20Immediately they
left their nets and followed him. 21As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son
of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and
he called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. 23Jesus went
throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the king-
dom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.
SERMON “Follow Me!” Pastor Jerome Evavold
HYMN “I Will Follow You”
Verse 1: Jesus said He was the way, the only way to God.
All who follow and believe in Him will know God’s love.
Chorus: And I will follow You. And I will follow You.
And I will follow, follow You Lord.
I want to follow you Lord. Follow Wherever You go.
Walk beside You on Your road. I want to follow You, follow You.
Verse 2: Jesus called the fishermen by the shores of the sea.
“Leave your nets,” he said to them, “And come and follow me.”
Verse 3: Jesus said to rich and poor, “Give your lives away.”
The same he says to you and me. “Come follow and obey.”

OFFERING
OFFERING SONG “The Church Song” Jay Beech
We are the Church, the body of our Lord;
We are all God’s children, we have been restored.
1. The church is not a building where people go to pray;
It’s not made out of sticks and stones, it’s not made out of clay.
2. You can go to worship but you cannot go to Church;
You can’t find a building that’s alive no matter how your search.
3. The church is not a business, a committee, or a board;
It’s not a corporation for the business of the Lord.
4. The church, it is the people, living out their lives called,
Enlightened, sanctified for the work of Jesus Christ.
CCLI#1330601
OFFERING PRAYER (All) Lord Jesus Christ, you call us to follow you and to pro-
claim the gospel through word and deed. May these gifts and the service of our lives be
tangible and worthy signs of our response. Amen.
PRAYERS
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those
who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen.

Broken given all to share,

When we hear what God has done,
Reconciled we live as one. (Chorus)

THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY
Follow Me
It's hard not to wonder what was going through the minds of Peter, Andrew,
James, and John when Jesus showed up at their place of work and said, "Follow
me" (Matt. 4:19). Leaving the life you know behind to start something brand
new is a huge deal. If all you know how to do is fish, it must be terrifying to
just abandon your boat and trust Jesus. Might they have asked themselves,
"Why me?"
In Matthew's gospel, this is the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, the first of
his words and actions that shed light on who God is for us. What could it mean
that of all the people he could have chosen, of all the experts and dignitaries
and scholars and priests and nobility he could have recruited, Jesus went to the
Sea of Galilee and picked four everyday fishermen as his first disciples?
Anybody can say that they care about ordinary people. But here's someone who
not only hangs out with regular people, who not only ministers to them, but
who actually invites them to be part of what God's up to in the world. And
here's the best part: God invites you too!
Sometimes we hear God's call to us as an obligation, an additional burden that
we have to carry on top of the hundred other things we have going on in our
lives. It's easy to feel inadequate—like we don't measure up. But being a Chris-
tian is never about measuring up. In baptism, God has already picked you, just
as you are! God has made you a light in the world, reflecting God's own love
and goodness. And at the table God gifts you with everything you need to be a
disciple: forgiveness, sustenance, Jesus' risen life moving in and through you.
Leave behind your doubt and fear, and follow him to freedom.
