Trinity Book Club

As I get ready to write this article for August, it has been an-other beautiful summer day- Sunny, warm and wonder-ful! Wow!! Interesting to think that August is right around the corner. And so as we enjoy summer to its fullest, we may miss out on other activities like book club we didn’t meet in June as we couldn’t make our book night work. We will be reviewing Father’s Day (June book) and The Mountain Be-tween Us at our July 18

th book night. So as you look for Au-

gust activities come and join Trinity Lutheran Book Club. Even if you have not attended before, everyone is welcome at all times. We meet at Jacobsen Hall at 6:30pm and we usually have something yummy to snack on too!

Ok, Here is some neat news! I had contacted Albert Lea li-brary a few months back and asked if the we could get anoth-er Minnesota author to come to Albert Lea and speak with the local book clubs. I gave them a recommendation of an author living in Rochester and crossed my fingers. So put on your calendars –Albert Lea Library is hosting Habibo Haji, author of “Conquering the Odds, Journey of a Shepherd Girl” on Au-gust 15, Monday at 6:30pm in the Albert Lea City Hall Cham-bers. There is no cost to attend this event.

Sooo…. On August 15th at 6:30pm Lets all meet at the Albert Lea City Hall Chambers and enjoy hearing from another Minnesota Author.

Men’s Breakfast and Bible Sharing will resume on

Saturday, September 10th at 7:00 AM. Meet at Hardee’s for

breakfast and then to Trinity for Bible study.

Mark your calendars...

Sunday August 21st when “The Raiders of the Lost Art” lead

us in worship at 10:30 a.m..

The Raider’s of the Lost Art originated in the spring of 1988. They are made up of 7 incredible musicians and a wonderful vocalist. This group has served as the host band for the Lakeside Dixie Fest in Clear Lake Iowa since its inception in 1993. In addition, they have performed at numerous festivals, private functions and are a popular addition to many church services in the area.

The service is compiled of scripture and very familiar hymns which we will join in singing. A children’s sermon will also be incorpo-rated. The music is set in a Dixieland style and very spirit filled. I had the pleasure of worshiping with them at Trondheim Lutheran when they celebrated their 125 anniversary. It was so fun and very meaningful and I am excited to introduce my fellow church family to a great service giving Glory to God. This service is geared for ages 1-100. Please make an effort to attend and bring family and friends with you, I know you will be blest and leave with a huge smile.

Watch the Bulletin and our Trinity web page for reminders. The band will start playing earlier with fantastic toe tapping music so come early.

I am available for any questions you may have.

Challenges the Congregation

We have a grocery shopping cart in the entry of the church. Our goal is to collect 525 pounds of food donations by Septem-ber 30, 2016. Please help us meet the goal. A few sugges-tions from the Salvation Army are: soup, canned or a pouch of tuna or chicken, canned fruit, canned stew, cereal, peanut but-ter and jelly. Any donations are very much appreciated.

The other challenge is to receive enough supplies to pack 60 school kits for the TLCW. The balance of the supplies will be given to area schools. We have a red wagon in the entry of the church for these supplies to be put in. The supplies are now on sale at the local stores and have to be exactly what is on the list. Our goal is to fill the wagon as many times as possible.

School kit supplies: notebooks 8” x 10-1/2” ruled paper, 70 sheets

blunt scissors

rulers (inches and centimeters)

pencil sharpener

new pencils with erasers

ballpoint pens (no gel ink)

2-1/2” eraser

box of 24 count crayons

Worship at 9:00 AM with Teacher Installation. After worship meet in Trinity Hall to register for Sunday Faith Formation (Sunday School) classes. Then the festivities will begin with food, games, fun and fellowship.

Call Committee Report

We are so pleased with the last 2 months and the wonderful out-come we have had. All the information follows this report. I personally want to take this opportunity to ‘Thank’ the awesome people on this committee, the dedication, thoughtful conversation and prayerful time together will stay with me for a lifetime. These people put so very much time and energy into this process. We followed the Synod’s Call Process to the letter and were in con-stant contact with our Synod whenever a question came up. Pas-tor Susan Miller and Cheryse Sloan were tremendous assets to us. This is something most people only do once, so you feel over-whelmed to start with and without the Holy Spirit to guide you, you would be lost. We felt all the prayers from the Congregation and always started and ended with prayer, so we truly felt the pres-ence of the Holy Spirit. We received the 5 candidates’ names on May 17th, and contacted all to set up interviews. Those initial inter-views were conducted here at Trinity within a 2 week period, with 2 Churches visited, and then 2 second interviews set-up. As Lau-rie said on Sunday the 17th, we met with Pastor Eileen for our first interview on Memorial Day evening, and we actually had a 2nd in-terview here at Trinity on Father’s Day evening, so you can tell the dedication of this group. They all knew how important this was to our Trinity Congregation to find the right person to shepherd us into the future. After our second interview with Pastor Eileen, we met again and went over all the references, previous notes and talked about our personal feelings. We took a secret ballot vote and on the very first time it was unanimous. That was truly amaz-ing to me to have all 7 of us in total agreement and said to us we knew we had found the right Pastor for Trinity. So in an exact span of 2 months, from May 17th when we received these great candidates from Pastor Susan to this past Sunday July 17th when we had the Special Congregational meeting and voted to call Pastor Eileen, so much has happened and been accom-plished. Now we go forward into a great future for our Trinity family and this committee thanks everyone for their prayers and patience during this exciting time. s/Andrea Jensen, Chair, Jean Pestorious, Ron Petersen, Laurie

"“She opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy."

Proverbs 31:20

We hope you are enjoying the beautiful summer days! It's go-ing by much too fast. We're slipping closer to the days of fall.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Adeline Biedermann for organ-izing and all ladies that donated cakes for St. John's Sunday coffee. Heritage Luncheon chairmen, Liz Skov, Katie Jacobsen and Marlene Wright for chairing, Deborah and Eunice Circles for serving, Greg Andersen for cooking and Michael Cotter and Bev Jackson-Cotter for sharing wonderful stories with us.

Our Trinity Wednesday Quilters are enthusiastic and willing to spend one day every month cutting, arranging, pinning, tying and sewing quilts that are sent around the world to people in need. This ministry is part of the ELCA church that we are proud to be a part of. The TLCW Board originally planned to serve our quilters morning coffee and lunch in July, but because of church scheduling it's been changed to August. How many quilts have been made at Trinity in this ministry? Thousands! Thank you, quilters for your dedication and hard work!

Undie Sunday is planned for August 7 and 14. There will be bas-kets near the church sanctuary to collect underwear for children en-tering school this fall. This is such a basic need for children in our community! The Salvation Army will distribute the "Undies" making them available for back packs, special needs classes and other are-as selected by the Army.

Summer combined Circle Bible Study will meet on Wednesday, August 17 in Jacobsen Hall at 2:00 p.m. Jo Meyer leads the Bible study and this is a special time of sharing together.

Family Faith Formation

As I write this I think back on two experiences that the FFF/

Education committee orchestrated this summer.

The first was Vacation Bible School. At VBS kick-off on Sunday

June 19th the families and their children got to meet all the counse-

lors from Okoboji. The counselors came from many different back-

grounds and colleges across the country. You could tell by looking

at their faces they wanted to have a positive Christian impact on

the children under their care.

The theme for this year's VBS was "Released". Which pertains to

all of us being captive to sin.

There were many activities that week. Children in the younger age

group started the day off with a Bible story. During one activity the

young campers took shoe boxes and built a tower. Hidden in some

of the boxes were hand puppets representing prisoners. When the

tower was built the children knocked it down and let the puppets

out of the box to symbolize releasing the prisoners.

Another activity for the younger campers involved being blindfolded

and led through an obstacle course by one of their friends. This

relates to Jesus putting mud on the blind man's eyes and releasing

him from his blindness.

The older campers decorated empty soup cans with words cut out

of magazines that were good thoughts.

On the last night of VBS the councilors and children put on a

presentation showcasing what they had learned that week. There

were skits and singing.

An important fact about VBS: This is the first big chance for us as

adults to introduce children to Jesus and our Christian culture. How

many of you can remember sending your children to VBS and hav-

ing them ask if they could bring a friend with. A few weeks later

their friend decides to start attending church with your family. May-

be their parents decide to go to church because your child's friend

has told them great things about the pastor or the people at that

church. Whatever the reasons, it all started in VBS.

Page 13: Trinity Lutheran Church August 2016 Newsletter · 2017. 8. 18. · Jeremiah 23:23-29 God’s word is like fire, like a hammer that breaks rocks Psalm 82 Arise, O God, and rule the

The other experience the FFF committee was involved in was

escorting the residents of St. John’s from their rooms to

church service Sunday July 10th. The first sight a visitor is

greeted with at St. John’s is the garden. It had different sec-

tions. Each sect ion had a sign designating that area to a dif-

ferent section of St. John’s . In the middle is a beautiful foun-

tain of a child holding an umbrella. The garden area has a

calming effect on most who visit it.

The residents of St. John’s were happy to have visitors and

were even happier when we escorted them to the chapel.

They had the place in mind where they wanted to sit, and

there was room for everyone.

After the service it was time to return them to their rooms. It

was interesting to see the residents looking out for each other

and making sure they got back to where they needed to go.

One final memory of St. John’s was the bird cage in one of

the waiting areas. It was filled with canaries of many different

colors, each going about their lives making people happy with

singing and other actions.

One upcoming date to remember:

Como Zoo trip, August 20th. Please sign up on the opportunity

table.

Have a good summer.

Life & Missions

What a fun weekend July 15th and 17th was. Thank you to Scott and Cindy Golbuff and Bob and Patti Yaw with help from Corky and Trish Stanley for continuing the Summer Splash. The location was changed due to street construction at the Stanley’s. It was a beautiful afternoon and evening enjoyed by all members. There was swim-ming, kayaking, pontoon riding, good food and much fellowship.

Then on Sunday, following the services and the meeting, we had our planned Volleyball/picnic at Snyder Field. Due to the puddles on the courts we did not have any Volleyball games played, but that did not stop the fun and the picnic. The kids found other games to play. Of course we had ice cream treats thanks to Mary Ann Martinson. It all made for a busy fun weekend.

We have our Pelican Breeze ride set for August 12th with the ride starting at 5:45 p.m. There is a sign up sheet on the Opportunity Table. The first 50 signatures will be on the ride. We will provide pizza for all. Riders need to bring their own beverages. Come join us.

We will start our summer Food Shelf collection in August and contin-ue through September. We will have a shopping cart in the upper entrance. Our baskets on the lower level by the office can also be used. Our goal this year is 525#. WE CAN DO IT!

We again have a wagon in the upper entrance area to be filled with school supplies. The TLCW has a list of specific items they need for their kits that they pack for World Relief. Let’s fill the wagon many times for their kits and the balance will be delivered to Freeborn County Schools to be given to their students.

We again will help with Undie Sunday. The collection Sundays are August 7th and August 14th. Please do some extra shopping and ex-ceed the 586 packages we collected last year.

We continue to be Welcome Ministers. Anytime a group or an individ-ual needs something announced let us know during the week or prior to service. We also send Thank You cards to deserving members and Get Well cards when appropriate.

Our next meeting is August 2, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. Join us.

Premise committee is looking into the rerouting of the roof drains where they meet the ground on the north side of the church to have them under the side walk to resemble the Washington street drains. This would help elevate the water on the sidewalk that lends it self to freezing in winter. Less salt would be used to help promote a longer lasting sidewalk.

The trees will be removed from the Washington street side as they are continuing to disrupt the parking lot adjacent to that area. Still awaiting on quotes as some people are interested in the trees for lumber.

Three doors left to replace then the church will be closer to being secure from rain and snow.

The street curb on the north side of the church will be painted BLUE to signify handicap parking, this will be the length of the church property which in turn will allow for easier access to the elevator for those requiring curb service.

There are other smaller projects that are taking place through out the church. If at any time someone has a want, care, de-sire or concern about a church item that needs some attention please bring it to any premise or council member and I will look into it.

Worship and Music

This committee is so excited to be getting a new Pastor, we have been working on our own for a while now and doing okay, but it will be great to again be led. We will be having a wonderful event here at Trinity on Sunday Aug. 21st when we will have a second service that day. We will be having our regular 9:00AM service, but we have a Bluegrass Gospel group coming to lead our 10:30 second service. Every-thing will be the usual at the 9:00 service, scriptures, Commun-ion, sermon all the same. At the second service there will be a Children’s sermon and a little more, but a lot of great music and according to Gayle Neist who has been to a service they have done, you can’t stop your toes from tapping. She is actually the one who brought this to us and I mentioned just a hint of this in my last article. The name of the group is ‘Raiders of the lost Art’ and they are from different areas in Iowa. Gayle has been in con-tact with them and has graciously agreed to take this over and we are thankful for that. Watch your bulletins and it will be in the announcement time also. Another thing we are looking for is a group of people that would be willing to be greeters at weddings and funerals here at Trinity. It seems many years ago this was something that happened reg-ularly, but over the years it has gone away. We need it back! This is a large, sprawling Church and if you are unfamiliar with it you can get lost. If you come in the South entrance and don’t know where the Sanctuary is you could be wondering for a while. If you did this before or now have the time to volunteer for this, it would be very much appreciated. We have come up with a list, but time has been filled with other things right now, so if you would give me or anyone else on the committee a call, as I said it would be much appreciated. Our next meeting is on Tues. the 2nd of Aug. at 5:30 and all are welcome with their positive input. ‘O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.’ Psalm 136.1 s/Andrea Jensen, Chair
