I ing Herod failed to empoweranyone; in fact, heRdrained power from people in a continual grabfor power. Check out the ugly symptoms we see inhis leadership tlrat every one of us should avoid:
1. He felt disturbed and threatened when helearned of a coming king (v. 3).
2. He leveraged his power against any possible
L He used people to serve his own purposes(w.7 8).
He lied in order to proiect the right image (v. g).
He reacted with fury when he didnt get hisway (v.15).
He concerned himself onlywith his own benefit(v.16).
He sought to destroy any potential threat tohis leadership (w. 16-18).

A ,o: is sometimes called the angry prophet. Most of his words express heated emotion. He condemnslaleaders who fail to.provide justice for their people. Amos 5:7-17 contains his lamentation and call for
repentance to those who turn justice into bitterness.
J6. when leaders act unjur,l, ;ffi ;;;;;;;;;; rippte effect. God hates injustice. but especialty amongleaders whose crooked influence infects an entire nation! Note the leadership abuses in Amos's day:
1. They abandoned morality (v.7).
2. They confused values (v.10).
3. They taxed the poor for selfish gain (v. 11).
4. They were corupt and oppressed citizens (v. 12).
5. Theytook bribes (v.12).
. 6. Theydeprived peopleofiusticein court(v.12).
i<th. ,.u,y part of this sad story is that these leaders could not see their own corruption. Amos 5:LB warnsagainst longing for the day of the Lord, for it will be a dreadful day of judgment, not a joyful celebration.
Jhe Edomites violated an important use of.l power: to protect the powerless. Even thoughtf Edomig: did not directly violate the fews, thly
did stand idly by when another country abusedthem. When leaders have the power to do goodand dont use it, God holds them equatty iuitty(lames 4:U).
