    WHAT IS GIDEON'S PROMISE?

Mass incarceration is thisgeneration's greatest civil and humanrights challenge, and Gideon'sPromise believes public defenders arebest positioned to transform theculture of efficiency over justice anddehumanization that prevails in ourcriminal justice system.

Named after Gideon v. Wainwright, the landmark 1963 case thatguaranteed the right to counselregardless of one's ability to pay,Gideon’s Promise is building amovement of public defenders todrive indigent defense reform.

Gideon’s Promise works with publicdefender offices across the countryto raise the standard ofrepresentation for poor people in ournation’s most broken systems. Eachof our partner offices is led by a chiefdefender who shares this reformvision and is committed to supportingthe next generation of publicdefenders to usher in change.

    BECOME A CHANGE AGENT

In their graduation year, LSPP Fellows enterinto the 3-year CORE 101 program that trainsyoung public defenders to be change agents intheir jurisdictions. Core 101 begins with anintense 2-week Summer Institute that bringstogether early career pubic defenders inpartner offices across the country to buildcommunity, inspire public defender pride, andreinforce client-centered values while learningvaluable trial skills, pretrial litigation strategies, and storytelling and persuasion techniques.Core participants return every 6 months for aweekend of training until their graduation fromthe program after 3 years. Upon the completionof Core, our attorneys are able to participate inprogramming for Gideon's Promise alumni tostay connected to the network of publicdefenders seeking to create change.

LSPP provides graduating 3Ls committedto public defense with employment in aGideon's Promise partner office, 3 yearsof training from leaders in publicdefense, and a network of support injurisdictions across the country. Partnerlaw schools agree to financially supportfellows for up to one-year through agrant, fellowship, and/or stipend in anamount determined by the participatinglaw school.

The fellowship program grants lawgraduates the unique opportunity to joina public defender office working toimprove criminal justice in areas wherethe need is greatest. LSPP Fellowsbecome part of a broader movement totransform indigent defense. Together,we are driving change in our nation'smost broken systems. We hope you willjoin us in this effort!
