TheCLAREFoundationisanonprofitorganizationprovidingcompassionatetreatmentandrecoveryservicesforalcoholismandsubstanceabusetoindividuals,families,andthecommunity.

Localeffortsbyconcernedcommunitymembersbeganinthelate1960sinresponsetothelackofrecoveryservicesforalcoholicsandaddictsgatheringonthebeachesofSantaMonicaandVenice.In1970,thefoundinggrouprentedasmallstorefrontandsleepingareaonPicoBoulevardandbeganprovidingeducation,resources,andasafeplacefordetoxification.

Eachyearover26,000peopleturntoCLAREforhelp,andover2,600areadmittedtooneofCLARE’s11comprehensiveprograms.Ourcontinuumofcareincludeslong-andshort-termstrategiesthatfocusonhealingthewholepersonthroughprofessionalcounselingandcompassionatesupportbyourtrainedandcertifiedstaff.

JeffMcFarlandhasbeenapracticingCalifornialawyerfor20years,andisapartnerintheLosAngelesofficeofQuinnEmanuelUrquhart&SullivanLLP.Heisafamiliarfaceintherecoverycommunity,havingbeeninvolvedwithandasupporterofanumberofdrugandalcoholrecoveryprograms“forfunandforfree”forover25years.HeheadsTheTimminsFoundation,anon-profitentityfoundedinmemoryofformerCLAREboardmemberBobTimmins,whosemissionistohelppersonswhocannotaffordtogettreatmentfordrugandalcoholaddiction.

Inadditiontohislawpracticeandworkwithintherecoverycommunity,inhisfree(?)timeJefftrainsforandcompetesinfullandhalfIronmantriathlons,havingcompetedinandfinishedIronmanCanada,IronmanChinaaswellasthe2006and2009FordIronmanWorldChampionshipsinKona,Hawaii.Jeffandhiswifeof23years,Melanie,liveinManhattanBeachandaretheparentsoftwoboys—Spencer18andEthan12.InadditiontoCLARE,theMcFarlandsaresupportersofTheTimminsFoundation,MusiCares,TheTonyHawkFoundation,ThePromisesFoundation,andExceedingExpectations.

SARGEisanextraordinarytriple-threatentertainer,whohasperformedworldwidetoadoringaudiences.Hissidesplittingcomedy,touchingvocalsandstunningdisplayofdexterityasapianisthavewowedcrowdsfordecades.ButSARGE’sroadtosuccesshasnotbeensmoothlypaved.

HewasborninMiamiBeach,FloridaduringtheCivilRightsMovementtoaJewishmotherandblackfather,butgivenupforadoptionsoonafterbirth.Fortunately,hewasquicklyadoptedbyacouplewhothenraisedhiminGreatNeck,LongIsland.AlthoughSARGEattendedthebestprepschoolsintheregion,allthewhile,helivedwithsomesenseofconfusionbecausehisadoptedparentshadraisedhiminaJewishhousehold

withoutmuchexposuretohisblackheritage.Thisledtosomeinternalconflictasachildandateen—feelingshetriedtonumbwithalcohol,drugsandgambling.

Hespentpartofhisyoungadultlifeasahomelessman,severelyaddictedtoseveralvices,andcoppingdrugsathishangoutundertheManhattanBridgeinNewYorkCity.Withawealthoftalentunrealized,onDecember26,1990,hehadanepiphanythatwouldchangehislifeforever.Asstrangeasitmaysound,onthatdayhemadeadecisiontocommithimselftosobriety—coldturkey—andneverlookedback.

SARGEhasbeencleanandsobersincethen,andhehasdedicatedhimselftoassistingotherswhoarefacingthesamebattle.

Hisartistictalentssurfacedonhis6thbirthdayafterhisparentstookhimtosee“TheSoundofMusic”onBroadway.Whentheyreturnedhomefromtheshow,andwithoutanyprompting,SARGEsatdownatthefamilypianoandbegantoplaysongsfromtheshowentirely“byear”.Hedidthiswithoutevertouchingapianobefore,anditwasatthispointthathisparentsknewtheyhadsomethingspecialontheirhands.

SARGElaterattendedBostonUniversity’sSchoolofPublicCommunicationwherehegraduatedwithaconcentrationinAdvertisingandMassCommunication.Afterashortstintasatalentrepresentative,thestagewascallingandSARGEenrolledatTheLeeStrasbergTheaterInstitute.Fromthispointforward,hewouldnolongerrepresenttalent–rather,hewould“be”thetalent.Tomakeendsmeet,SARGEwrote,producedandperformedforFOX’swildlysuccessful“BestDamnSportsShowPeriod”,asanationallysyndicatedradiohostforFOXSportsRadio,andworkedextensivelyforABCWideWorldofSportsandCBSSports.

Butsometimeswhenoneisatacrossroads,therehastobean“all-in”proposition.Sowhen“TheNFLToday”hostGregGumbelencouragedhimto“beacomedian,you’retoofunny,toocreativeandtoobrightnottogoforacomedycareer,“SARGEmovedtohisbestbuddy’spull-outsofainNewYorktoembarkonacareerinstand-upcomedy.AfterplayingclubsandcollegesalloverAmericaforthreeyears,SARGEfoundhimselfopeningforsomeofthebiggestnamesinmusic–ArethaFranklin,PaulAnka,TheBeachBoys,andWayneNewton,justtonameafew.

WorkingthesehighprofilegigshelpedSARGElearntoweavehisownmusicaltalentsintohiscomedyshows.Notonlyastand-upcomedian,SARGEsingsinhisownvoiceandinadozenothers,includingHarryConnickJr.,SammyDavisJr.,LionelRichieandStevieWonder.Additionally,hisdead-onimpressionsofMarvAlbert,MikeTyson,KermittheFrogandGilbertGottfriedleaveaudienceshowlingandclamoringformore.

Triplethreatswhodon’tdancearehardtofindinshowbusinesstoday.Withhismixofcomedy,singingandpianoplaying,SARGEisalegitimatetriplethreatandararefind.
