Conference Attendee Reimbursement of Expenses Scholarship (C.A.R.E.S.) program

(from United Ostomy Associations of America at www.ostomy.org ) As in past years, UOAA is offering the C.A.R.E.S. Program. As you know, our 7th National Conference is being held this coming August 6th-10th, 2019. UOAA offers C.A.R.E.S. scholarships to current members of UOAA's Affiliated Support Groups (ASGs) who wish to attend a UOAA biennial National Conference and are seeking financial assistance. All appli-cants must be a first time UOAA National Conference attendee. This program financially aides those who have had ostomy or continent diversion surgery and who would like to attend UOAA’s biennial National Conference. This program assists with the travel and lodging expenses that could otherwise hinder a person from attending. The purpose of this program is to address the needs of the new ostomate and/or first time attendee, especially by facilitat-ing the “emotional healing” that is necessary for someone who has recently had surgery. Attending a National Conference is one of the best ways to learn and see firsthand that an ostomy does not change one’s ability to live life to the fullest. A C.A.R.E.S. sponsorship is not an all-expenses paid trip, but a way to help those who need some financial assistance. Please review the program overview and criteria letter that must be met by all applicants. Applicants must submit a completed application no later than April 8, 2019 to apply for UOAA’s 7th National Con-ference that will be held in Philadelphia, PA from August 6-10, 2019. The applications will be evaluated by the C.A.R.E.S Program Selection Committee and up to 6 qualified recipients will be chosen. Applicants who are to receive the scholar-ship will be notified by April 30, 2019. See the following links for information and application form:

Exercise

Exercise is as important for people with ostomies as it is for people without ostomies. But there are some considerations that should be tak-en into account before starting a new exercise routine. Check with your doctor to make sure you are ready for exercise,

especially if you have recently had surgery. Keep yourself hydrated, particularly if you have an ileostomy. Drink

plenty of fluids to keep your stoma healthy and to avoid dehydra-tion.

If you are starting to exercise after surgery or if you are just not used to regular exercise, walking is the easiest and most effective form of exercise.

Talk to your doctor about any abdominal exercises. You may be at an increased risk of hernia around your stoma due to straining or heavy lifting.

Core strengthening for core stability and flexibility is important, but again talk to your doctor about core strengthening exercises before starting them.

Two of our own WOCNs, Lara Leininger and Angela Richardson have a video on YouTube of core exercises for the ostomate. Find it at https://youtu.be/QUEPwYEvbis
