What happened at Boxford 'lastman standing' hmm! Sidge

likened it to 50’s trials and enjoyed, see his result, Roger Finch alsocame to the fore, very well doneboth of you I'm sure the rest of en-try will agree! Close in theh/weight's, they’re pilots got thro'to the grippy! Well done lads! Also aworthy score by twin shocker Rich-ard Palmer. On 50/50 Rob Clarkemust have been quite surprised(pleasantly) after all the leg wav-ing!! Easy routers who finished, you did well hope you recoveredsufficient to consider the festiveseason offerings! I heard Raydonattracted a sizeable entry, amongthe pre65's Greg Radley, am notparty to any results. He was outagain at Rendlesham (Butley ed.)along with John Ruth who l believetopped easy route, a shorter coursethan previous years. Several other

happenings within the centre hopesome other members could pro-duce some articles to help our wor-thy editor along! Come on chapseveryone has a story to tell!!Where have decompressers gone?Considered very useful on slippydeclines in yesteryear, I would bepleased to be updated! Raydonpractice proved worthwhile, 35 tak-ing advantage, a rather limited ladhas appeared with his home builtbike and l'm sure would appreciateany assistance/encouragement ifyou should see him struggling, ok!Here's wishing you what you wishfor yourselves in 016 especially ourobservers/officials who do it with asmile. Be lucky all! A big thank youto our ed. Chris!

Due to a couple of unavoidabledrop outs we only had six

bikes in the Hall. Steve Webb haddestroyed the suspension bushesin the Greeves and Chris CookesTriumph was sparkless. Howevernew member Mark Chester broughtalong a tidy TY 250, this plus DaveField’s Bantam, Tony Sargeant’sT100 sprinter, Gary’s shiny Wassell, plus a short stroke Manx and Rog-ers photo display made for a goodline up. Plus of course we had forthe second time in 3 years the besttrials bike in show, the lovely Ban-tam brought along by the almosttoo modest Geoff Challlis. Add tothat Geoff’s friend Bob Mills alsotook a prize with his immaculateManx. Is he the same Bob Millsthat used to work for Greeves Iwonder? Roger and Heather could’nt getthe T110 in the van for all the dirtand oil. I do hope there was no re-

peat of the language I heard at theBeamish when some poor unfortu-nate (me) got in their way. Howev-er they were very welcome andarrived early to help out.

Many thanks to all who helpedout in all sorts of ways, I realizesome are not all that keen onshows (I know I was’nt when Iused to race —– they came acrossas a bit showoffy. But it get’s theEFA in the eye of lot of people whootherwise would not know we exist-ed. I personally would like to seethe Thumpers in particular given alot more publicity so as to pull inmore big four stokes and will liaisethe matter with the committee tosee what can be done.

Happy New Year,Donal.

Why ? It’s been done before, buthay-ho, why not.

Owning at the time a 500ccClassic Indian Bullet which per-formed extremely well, back in2007 I decided as an engineeringexercise to build a diesel poweredbike and what better machine tochoose as a basis than another Roy-al Enfield.

The reasons for wanting tobuild such a machine were econo-my, potentially 150mpg, and notwanting to be held to ransom byfuel suppliers, given the option ofrunning on bio-diesel.

How difficult could it be? Wellnot too challenging actually, with abit of research and planning priorto accumulating the parts.

The internet produced a lot ofvaluable information, one source in

particularhttp://www.altmann.haan.de/riding_on_salad_oil/ produced by anengineer in Germany was mostinformative, even providing draw-ings of some of the unique partsneeded for the installation.

First requirement was to find asuitable bike, an Enfield, as theyare pre-unit cost effective andparts availability is excellent. Awell known auction site produceda ‘C’ reg 350 Enfield Bullet from aLincolnshire barn for very sensiblemoney, complete with tax and test. However, having later given it agood look over it was so originaland low mileage, even down to thesupplying dealer’s stickers, I couldnot bring myself to adulterate this

machine. So that machine was puton hold and is actually currentlybeing refurbished. I was thenlucky enough to come across anoth-er 350 Bullet with some issues inLondon; basically the owner, asmallish fellow had trouble startingit and after falling off it in the wetpushed it into his garden and left it.Cash changed hands and I had myproject bike. Interestingly a thickfolder of paperwork accompaniedthis 1992 machine, and it turnedout it was privately imported by thelate owner of the Body Shop chain. It even still has the Indian registra-tion number painted on under-neath the UK plate.

Next what engine? Loads ofoptions, but given the costs of

A DIESEL ROYAL ENFIELDMOTORCYCLE!

Page 7: TRIALS · trials bike in show, the lovely Ban-tam brought along by the almost too modest Geoff Challlis. Add to that Geoff’s friend Bob Mills also took a prize with his immaculate

7

some, the choice was fairly straightforward - a Chinese copy of the10hp 400cc Japanese Yanmar type. There are many Chinese companiesproducing replicas of this enginetype as I witnessed for myself on aprevious trip to China, so I was nottoo concerned about quality, whichrumours had suggested may bequestionable. A suitable used unitwas sourced from an importer outof a warrantee returned waterpump for a very reasonable price.

The installation, which tookabout 1 year to complete, was aid-ed by Mr Altmann’s notes from theweb, but centred around that ofmotor/transmission alignment andreplacing the strength in the lowerframe structure.

The latter matter beingcritical as the Enfield petrolengine forms part of the low-er frame structure, whereasthe diesel engine does not. Iam happy to say the lowerframe structure/enginemounting I developed is builtlike the proverbial ‘brick outhouse’ and ties things togeth-er very firmly indeed.

Significant changes to the biketo achieve the installation wereamongst others , a longer gearboxmainshaft and primary casings, allowing the primary drive line toclear engine, a new left to right ex-haust and development of what Iwill describe as a ‘throttle’ controland engine stop.

So how does the completed ma-chine perform? Very well actually,so well in fact I sold the 500 petroland now use the diesel as onewould any bike. Other than the

diesel engine noise to which youbecome accustomed, you would behard pushed to tell you were notriding a petrol Enfield, everythingfeels and goes like you would ex-pect. It even starts on the kickstart with no need for glow plugs oreasy start. The only improvement Iwould like would be variable injec-tion timing on the engine, as unfor-tunately this engine, beingintended for applications requiringconstant speed running, is de-signed with a fixed advance. How-ever after much experimentation Ihave set it to a happy medium forboth low and high speed engineoperation. Not perfect for either, but quite acceptable.

So how can I sum up a smalldiesel motorcycle? All in all, verysatisfactory, 160 mpg if ridden verycarefully, 50-55mph max at3600rpm if you want to keep upwith traffic. Ideal for ‘B’ roads butnot quite quick enough for the mo-torway, or perhaps that’s just me!In use since 2008, engine showingno sign of wear in the 7 years ofuse, and still running fine to thisday.

Wozzat, oh no it's the alarm, s'posewe'll have to try and show someenthusiasm, a cuppa should do thetrick, the world'll look a betterplace then. After a quick breakfastand throwing a few bits together forlunchtime we climbed into the vanand headed for the A12 and M25.

One advantage of being on the roadearly is that you don't have toshare it with too many othervehicles.

We arrived at Kempton in good timeand went to find Don & Co. on theEFA Stand. A variety of bikes wereon display including two Bantams,

a Manx Norton, the ever sparklyWassall, a Triumph in sprint trimand a TY 175Yamaha.

There were plenty of Trade Standsto check out but you needed to bewell wrapped up if you were doingbusiness outdoors 'cos there was a

really mean wind whistling around.

Every off-road discipline was inevidence, time flew by and beforewe knew it the names of the ShowWinners were being announced -guess what - that green Bantamwas a winner with third in the BestBike Class ! PTO.

JACK THOMPSON TRIAL

Not such an early start today andnot so far to go, just the other sideof the river. Three routes. hardest, easier and easiest, two laps of 20sections all arranged around theMX track at Canada Heights.

Quite a few from the EasternCentre were in action with JamesWilliams only dropping 1 mark toclaim the Jack Thompson Trophy,Mark Fletcher was second on 4,Matthew Skeet on 8 and TrevorBaker on 11. Kevin Hood did wellto keep his concentration and goround clean to win a PremierAward in the 2-stroke Class withTerry Sewell only losing 5 marks fora First Class Award on the 2-strokeyellow route.

BOXFORD BASH

Or Last Man Standing Trial as itwas subsequently named. Onelook at the Results Sheet says it allreally - it was a tough one. Don'tthink we've ever seen so manybikes and riders rolling around onthe ground. Enquiries were beingmade as to where the nearest Pubwas….. A certain Triumphrider was happy with his day, mainly 'cos the bike kept going !Thanks to Bob Wreathall andChris Chapman for their efforts intrying to get us parked.

Happy New Year Everyone andremember - never test the depth ofthe water with both feet !
