SAFE DRIVING TIPS FOR
SMALL-BUSINESS OWNERS
(NAPSI)-If youre a business owner whodepends on a vehicle for work, reliabletransportation is a must. Commercialauto insurance group Progressiveoffers these tips for keeping yourvehicle running smoothly and safelywhile youre on the road:
Keep your vehicle maintained.Schedule regular professionalinspections, and repair or replace partswhen necessary (not when you havetime to get around to it).
Keep a safe distance. I f youre driving
a truck, you might be carrying moreweight than other drivers, so try to keepa two- to three-second distance betweenyour vehicle and the car in front of you. This will give you enough room to cometo a complete stop in case the car infront slams on the brakes.
Pull over. When you need to checkyour map or change your destination, take the next exit or stop at the nearestrest area.
Be ready for the unexpected. Makesure your vehicle and your businessare properly insured. You should have
liability and physical damage insurance, which covers damage you cause toyour vehicleor someone elsesin
case of an accident.
For more information or tfind a local agent, visit www.progressivecommercial.com.
PROTECTING YOUR
SPRINKLER SYSTEM ON
COLDER DAYS
(NAPSI)-While it may be time to headindoors for the colder months, theresstill one more gardening task you maywant to take care of.
To ensure a healthy lawn and gardenin the spring, take a few simple stepsto ensure that your sprinkler system isready to withstand the colder months.
If they are not properly protected, inground irrigation systems can bdamaged by harsh winter weather.Protecting them is easy enough. Herare a few tips to help:
Turn off your timer. Automatic systemshave a controller or timer. Moscontrollers have a rain or off modthat shuts off the signals to the valves. The controller continues to keep time, the programming information (startimes, valve run times, etc.) isnt losand the clock continues to run. Thonly change is that the valves will no
activate.
You can also shut off the power to thcontroller, but if you do, youll need treprogram the time and potentially allthe other settings when the weathewarms up.
Shut off the water. You can protect thmain shutoff valve against freezing byshutting off the water supply. Make surthe valve is wrapped with insulation(foam insulation tape and a plasticbag). If your system doesnt havemain shutoff valve, install one to protecyour investment.
Aboveground piping also needs to binsulated and you can use self-sticking,foam-insulating tape or foam-insulatingtubes found at home supply stores.
Keep the pipes from freezing. If you livin a very cold area, consider removingthe water from the pipes and sprinklersso the pipes dont freeze and burst. There are several ways to drain pipes:manual drain valves, automatic drainvalves or the compressed air blowoumethod. But proceed cautiously. Sincthere could be potential safety risks, contacting an irrigation specialist is
good idea.
Insulate backflow preventers andvalves if they are aboveground. Youcan also use insulation tape for this, bube careful not to block the air vents anddrain outlets on backflow preventers.
Before winterizing your system, you maywant to consult an irrigation specialist, such as those at Rain Bird.
Learn more. For more irrigation tipsas well as information on where to finda specialist to help you winterize yousystem, visit www.rainbird.com or call
(800) RAINBIRD.

JOIN THE TREND TOWARD
INDEPENDENCE
(NAPSI)-According to a Direct Sellingssociation survey, more than 16illion Americans are direct sales
epresentatives these days and they sellearly $30 billion worth of products andervices, despite the down economy.
here are many ways to get in on thisrowing opportunity to become anntrepreneur-and a surprising reason.
oing Well And Doing Good
In some cases, you can not onlyake money, set your own hours andaintain your independence, you canelp others as well. Thats becausef another trend in business: themergence of entrepreneurs takingocial responsibility to new levels. These
orward-thinking business owners haveoven the concept of giving into theery fabric of their companies from dayne. While its generally expected thatompanies make charitable donationsnce they have made it big, it takes anntirely different mind-set to create arofitable business model strategicallyased on the premise of helpingthers.
or example, one cause-oriented,or-profit business has expanded thisoncept further by putting giving powern the hands of its customers.
pecializing in the in-home purchase of
recious metals, the company donates a
minimum of 2.5 percent of all purchasesto charitable organizations selected byparty hostesses. As a result, in just twoyears, its given more than half a milliondollars to thousands of charities acrossthe country.
The expertly trained professional buyerswho join Golden Girls are given thelatest technology to assess, measureand certify the gold they purchase.
Party attendees can sell their unwantedjewelry in a pressure-free environmentand get paid on the spot while enjoyingthe company of friends.
Charities across North America canuse gold-buying parties as fundraisingopportunities for their members, supporters and other contacts. Theseorganizations can even create a networkof parties to maximize their rewards.
For more information on how to host aparty or train to become a buyer, pluslearn about other ways to make money, visit www.golddoesgood.com or call(866) 995-2008.
FARMERS HELP BENEFIT THEIR
COMMUNITIES
(NAPSI)-Among the more than 50million rural American residents isa special group of people-a groupresponsible for feeding, fueling andclothing the world, stimulating theeconomy and caring for the land. Theyare a group deeply committed to their
hometowns, and they grow much more
than corn, soybeans or cotton. Theyare Americas farmers, and they aregrowing their communities.
These dedicated farmers are making adifference thanks in part to a program
from Monsanto Fund called AmericasFarmers Grow Communities. Thisprogram provides farmers with achance to win $2,500 for their favoritelocal nonprofit organization.
For Iowa farmer Jerry Varenhorst, hisrural community has been a greatplace to live and raise a family.
Varenhorst farms 600 acres of cornand soybeans on his family operationin Le Mars, Iowa. He was named thePlymouth County, Iowa, winner for apilot program.
I chose the Good Samaritan Society, a
nursing home facility where many localretired farmers are residents, includingmy father, Varenhorst says.
We need to remember that these retiredfarmers were the ones supporting ourgroups when we were younger, andthey shouldnt be forgotten, he says. After all, one day I will be a retiredfarmer, too.
Third-generation family farmer AllenBerryman, winner from Hobbsville,N.C., elected to direct his prize to theFFA youth agriculture organization.
I chose the Chowan County FFA chapterbecause my 17-year-old daughter,
Emily, is the local secretary, he says. The FFA has done so much good fomy daughter and she absolutely lovesit. Because of it, she has been able ttravel to a lot of different places andmeet new people.
The chapter plans on using the fundsto help students pay their FFA dues, which have gone up in recent years.
Now farmers in more than 1,200counties across 38 states will be ableto help grow their communities by morethan $3 million.
Eligible farmers can sign up online awww.growcommunities.com or call(877) 267-3332 until Dec. 31, 2010.Farmers age 21 and over who areactively engaged in farming a minimumof 250 acres of corn, soybeans andor cotton or 40 acres of open-field
vegetables or at least 10 acres otomatoes, peppers and/or cucumbersgrown in protected culture are eligible. One winner will be randomly selectedfor each eligible county.
As a bonus for each eligible farmewho signs up, Monsanto Fund will alsdonate $1 to the United Way to helpfight hunger in their community.
Our rural communities are the hearof America, says Deborah Patterson, president of the Monsanto Fund. Webelieve in rural America, and we want thelp these dedicated farmers continueto grow their local communities.

Putting into Practice
After completing a unit about house
plans and how to create a good flowthrough a home including a workablekitchen space, John Caskey's 2ndhour Architecture class put whatthey learned to practice. By cookingin a room with a kitchen that is usedfor the Skills For Living classstudents got to experience what it islike to prepare food, cook, and clean
in the kitchen space. Theyalso learned about eatinghealthy. The class tried their
hand at making breakfastskillets, which is a specialrecipe of Mr. Caskey's. Moststudents' skillets' turned outvery tasty. The students alsoagree that having a worktriangle in a kitchen is veryimportant.
Preparing for Spring
New Directions students prepared garden beds and plantedbulbs in a project to beautify the school grounds. Austyn,Cody, J.R., and Jesse removed sod from the beds, andMichelle and Jesse dug holes and planted tulip and daffodilbulbs. About 200 bulbs were planted. New Directions shouldbe a colorful place this Spring!
StudentsHonored by Veteran
On Veterans Day students in Ted Alberts'4th Grade class at Brookside Elementarywere visited by Erica Waring, a veteran ofthe war in Iraq. Ms. Waring, a paraprofessional at Brookside, was dressed in her uniform and answered questions from theclass about life as a soldier. "To have a person on staff that isknowledgeable about a veteran's commitment to protect ourcounty and to explain some of the things that a soldier doesand encounters, is amazing and beneficial to our students. Theclass really enjoyed it", said Alberts. One student in the classsummed it up perfectly, "we love people like Ms. Waring forbeing a soldier and protecting us!"Erica spent 2-3 days talking to classes not only at Brooksidebut also at Riverview.

Its a common misconception that only car dealerships can perform the
maintenance services on a new vehicle that is under warranty. Clearly,
consumers can have their maintenance done by their local independent
repair shop without affecting the warranty.
