The music program here at Granger has been getting better and better. One of the specific music groups that has seen this improvement are the Madrigals. Mr. Smith took over as the Madrigals director, as well as the rest of the choirs last year.

One thing most people don’t know that Mr. Smith used to work for Warners Bros. Last year, when the 2007-2008 Mads went to region competition, they made them perform first because everyone assumed that they weren’t going to be as good as the rest of the other schools. When they went up to sing, everyone was shocked to hear these amazing voices come out of them. Although everyone was impressed, they were one place away from going to state competition. David Waterbury(12) said, “This year, our goal is to take state and prove

to all who oppose us that the underdogs can win!”

One issue that frustrated the Madrigals was when they had to miss classes for a performance during school time in the holiday season. “Even though we got our absences excused by the district, some of our teachers still whined and complained about us missing. It’s one of the things you have to put up with when being a Madrigal,” said David.

Recently the Madrigals paid a visit to Donna Anderson, who was a member of Granger’s

very first Madrigals when the school opened in 1958.

Recently, Mrs. Anderson was stricken with the devastating news that she had cancer. The Madrigals got word of this through Mitch Wayman, who is in Mrs. Anderson’s church ward, and they decided to go to her house and sing to her in her tough time.

“It was a very spiritual moment, and I’m glad we could somewhat help her in her time of need,” said Rachel Higginson(12).

Just three weeks later, Mrs. Anderson passed away. They will perform again at her memorial service on Thursday, January 30.

The 2008-2009 Mads have done a terrific job singing their hearts out at school assemblies, singing the national anthem at sporting events, and at the Veterans Day Concert

that was held at the U of U.

3… 2… 1… HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Many Granger High students celebrated the upcoming year. Some watched the ball drop from Times Square in New York, some attended parties, and some had parties of their own. We all need an excuse to stay up to at least midnight, so New Year’s Eve was a perfect time for late night fun. “On New Year’s Eve, I went to a play called “Cash on Delivery” at the Hale Center Theater with three friends. It was really fun because the play had a New Years theme, so they gave out food, noise makers, and even tiaras. The play ended around 8 p.m., so then we went miniature golfing afterwards. Then we went to a friend’s house to play games like Phase 10, and watch the ball drop,” said Kathleen Kalmar, (12). When I asked her what they did at midnight, she said, “We used the noise makers and made lots of noise!” Along with the fun celebrations that come with New Years, many people make New Year’s Resolutions in order to change something for the better.

Half of the juniors are not going to graduate… or so you would think if you believed the rumors, but Mr. Murdock says otherwise. It is a problem a lot of students have currently. “I need citizenship make up!” Seniors without a 2.0 CPA are ineligible to walk with there graduating class, and currently that’s a lot of seniors. Lisa Barcelon needs 70 hours plus some, and she is one of those seniors “I didn’t go to school” is the common reason why CPA’s are so low right now either because of seniors just slacking off or because they are almost done with school. getting caught up in the sluffing craze and it is not very smart. Jessica Knight needs 97 plus hours. She says, “I’m going to make up my hours by doing citizenship make up classes.” You can make up citizenship by attending citizenship make up classes basically sit down, be quiet, and sit up straight for about an hour or two and that’ll give you an hour for hour. You can make up citizenship by going after school to the citizenship classes or you can go to night forums which will give you some hours. Go with a parent you will get a lot more, or you can attend the classes that are held at Taylorsville High that will give you a lot more hours. Before school citizenship will most likely double your hours and it’s a good deal, too. Going to games to support school spirit can also give you hours and again take your parents.

“I think it’s important for students to know what opportunities they have, when school activities are and other school related events,” says Ms. Drage. She will help you out anyway she can. She keeps the lists outside of her door about what opportunities students have for citizenship make up. Ms. Drage also has some flyers about scholarships and some other stuff. “Seniors should receive a letter in the mail to tell you how many hours you need to do and we’ll have a meeting for all the seniors again to talk about all of it” says Mr. Murdock. He will help in anyway he can, and he does not have favorites. He believes in fairness. If you’re behind and don’t get to graduate it’s your own fault because you should have went to class in the first place.

Are you looking for new bands? Or are you just looking for a band with the right sound you need? Well, I have one for you! This one has two members right in our school. The band is called Chapman Meets the Devil (CMTD). Two of the band members are Kyle Maynard (11) and Addison Hansen (11). Kyle Maynard has supplied the information for you readers about the band. “Our band plays a deep, dark kind of sound. Our influences are Dallin Bratt and Ville Valo,” Kyle says. “We started our band when I was in 9th grade (2006). We don’t have an exact band; we have different members every day. It just depends on the day.” CMTD doesn’t have a gig coming up but they usually play in back yard gigs or at the Avalon. If you need a band to

Chapman Meets the Devil

play at a party, CMTD just could be that band. Wonder where their lyrics come from? “Our lyrics come from life experiences,” Kyle says. Life experiences are good influences on bands. Bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet for my Valentine are known for their hardcore sounds but once in a while they can play some pretty emotional songs, like “Dear God” and “Tears don’t fall.” “In the band I usually play the guitar and vocals. Addison is our other guitar man. Quan Lamb was originally in our band, but he left,” said Kyle who is really into some deep, dark kind of rock. He uses influences like the ones he described as a type of guideline or example. So CMTD they are a deep, dark kind of sound with influences like Dallin Bratt and Ville Valo. Want to book them for a party? Contact Kyle Maynard or Addison Hansen. They just might play for your party. Hope you enjoyed this profile. Have a great time, Lancers!

In our opinion

I was recently watching the movie “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” and I began thinking, “Damn. I wish our state were as intense as Tokyo. Fast cars, flashy lights…now that’d be a wicked fun time.” I thought about this for a while, silently complaining to myself about how this state is lame. This went on for a few minutes until I began thinking about all the good times I have had doing stuff with my friends at all the events that have gone on. Most of the time, teens find themselves in this predicament, complaining that Utah sucks. Honestly, I’ve noticed the ones complaining are the kids that just want to drink and party, opposed to finding anything else to do, or the kids that are just too lazy to look. Maybe if they got off their butts and found some initiative they would find there are plenty of awesome things to do. I have personally found a few hidden wonders. Let me first start by saying I enjoy flashy lights and “trippy” things, hence why I enjoy things like raves/concerts. These are places that you can enjoy good music and dance to the beat of the music all night long. About a month and a half ago I went to the rave Dreamland held up at the Salt Palace, though that is not the only place they are held. After the rave my friends came and apologized to me, saying that this rave was weak and they were sorry it was my first rave, but I seriously had a blast. Everybody danced to the sounds of the DJ in harmony, while laser lights and glow sticks twirled around the room. It felt like something

out of a Japanese manga. The raves can get

pretty expensive, which is why I haven’t gone to many. If you are into light/laser shows, try hitting up the Clark Planetarium on 110 S. and 400 W. on a Friday or Saturday night. They have live DJs performing songs from techno, rock, and most famously, Pink Floyd, with lasers lights for a price under ten dollars a ticket. Not bad, eh? Concerts aren’t a bad choice, either, and if you hit up a local venue it’s probably going to be a lot cheaper. Even though the venues are local, the music doesn’t suck. One of my favorite concerts, Mindless Self Indulgence, went to the Avalon, and my friends and I had a blast. There are also some decent eateries in these parts if you’re hungry. Next time you’re craving a slice of pizza, head up to The Pie Pizzeria. There are some around here, one downtown on 1320 East and 200 South and one in Union Park on 7186 S. and approximately 1100 East The environment is chill, and the food is delicious. Pizzas come loaded with mass amounts of toppings, piles of cheese, and thick, soft crust. It’s so good it nearly melts in your mouth. Bored but broke? No problem. Take a walk around the city, watch the sunset, and even look at the sky. Yeah, it sounds boring at first, but with a couple of friends, something simple can turn into something amazing. When my friends and I do this, we end up at random places like Wal-mart, chasing each other around and throwing footballs or something at each other. Good times. Seriously, people, it’s not that hard to find something to do. Ask a friend, look in a City Weekly, you can even try to google it. Just be willing to take the time to look before you decide to moan and groan next time.

Salt Lake City doesn’t suck

she will probably at least minor in math, but is still undecided. Samantha is a very active girl. Her hobbies range from reading

and puzzles, to basketball and soccer. She likes Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift, and Carmen Rasmussen. In addition to a wide range of music, she enjoys many movies, but says her favorites are A Walk to Remember and Moulin Rouge. She would like thank her brother and sister for getting her where she is. “(They) got me into math and they’re both awesome and brilliant.” At Granger High, though, she would like to thank the Madrigals and Orchestra, Mr. Clawson and Mr. Bullock, and all her friends that have all been wonderful and supportive.

Dan Brown got the Sterling Scholar music award, because, “Music is my passion,” and wants to attend Berklee College of Music, in Boston, M a s s a c h u s e t t s to become a film

composer, and write in the scores for movies. Along with hanging out with his girlfriend, Dan likes to play the piano and play Fallout 3 in his spare time. Some of his favorite books are Eragon and The Lord of the Rings, which is also one of his favorite movies. His favorite musicians consist of Brian Adams, Harry-Greson Williams, and Frank Wildhorn, and his favorite television show is House. He would like to attribute some of his success to not only himself, but both Mr. Moore and Mr. Smith, through valuable life lessons and their knowledge of music, and Mr. Fuller, for all his sarcastic support. As said by Dan himself, “The most important thing I could ever say is: Never, ever let go of your dreams, or let anyone tell you that can’t do something. Absolutely anything is possible if you try.”

Laurie Carlson wants to get the Sterling Scholar award for Dance,”Because my passion is dancing.” She intends on going to BYU to study this passion, because she would like to help people accomplish things. Along with dancing, Laurie likes to play the piano and hang out with friends. Among these friends, she really appreciates the help and success Adeena Lago and Nicole Rutherford has brought forth. “They have inspired me to never give up.” She would also like to thank her mom for her success, “Because she always made sure that I was able to be involved in dance.”

Noel Vongthongchit obtained the Sterling Scholar award in Business and Marketing, and plans on attending the University of Utah to pursue a career in Business Marketing/Business Management. She would like to thank all of Granger High’s business teachers, and Harjit Kaur, because, “She always encourages me and tells me to never give up.” Among the people who have helped her at Granger, she sees her parents as her ultimate heroes. “They support everything I decide to do. They have worked hard and sacrificed for me to

have higher education.” In her spare time, Noel likes to snowboard in the winter and to hike in the summer. She has “too many” favorite movies, but her favorite television shows are America’s Best Dance Crew, House, and Lincoln Heights. Her favorite books fall under the Twilight saga, and her favorite song is “Brown Eye Blues”, by Adrian Hood. One of the things she loves to eat is “thum-mak-hoong”, or spicy papaya.

Kylee Meryhew received the Sterling Scholar award in Family and Consumer Science (FACS). She has been taking child care to go into a career in pediatrics, beginning at Utah State. “My dream is to be a pediatrician.” She is definitely a girl that enjoys the outdoors, because some of her hobbies include snowboarding, wake boarding, going to her family’s cabin, and camping, not to mention hanging out with her friends and dance. “I love all movies, and I like a variety of music,” but her favorite books are the Twilight series and her favorite television show is One Tree Hill. Many people have attributed to her success. “All of the FACS teachers, Mrs. Paskins, Adeena, and coach (Nicole Rutherford).”

In mathematics, Samantha Krohn took the award at Granger High. She states, “Math is my best subject” She plans on attending Utah State University, and says

Sarah Thorup is striving for the award in the English category. “I chose is because I enjoy English and writing--I had to have leadership and service experience, as well as various rewards.” She plans to study English in college when she transfers from SLCC to either USU or UVU, to become an author and continue writing books. In her spare time, she likes to do art, read, and write. Some of her favorite books are the Firebringer Trilogy and her favorite artists are Enya, U2, and Cherie Call. In times of trouble, she turns to her hero, Jesus, because, “I can always turn to him when I am in trouble.” She would also like to thank all her friends and family for their loving support, and her English teachers here at Granger. “They helped me acquire the skills I needed for writing.”

Because you’ve been running through my mind all day!Are you lost? Heaven is a long way from

here! You know what I just realized? You look an awful lot like my next girlfriend/boyfriend.Are you a parking ticket? You have fine written all over you.I’m invisible! Can you see me? (Yes) GOOD! How about tomorrow night?Life without you is like a broken pencil… POINTLESS!Excuse me- can you empty your pockets? I believe you have stolen my heart.I think you have something in your eye… Just as I thought! It’s a sparkle! If looks could kill you would be a weapon of mass destructionI’m not drunk, I’m just intoxicated by you!Are you from T e n n e s s e e ? ‘Cause you are

the only TEN I SEE!GIANT POLAR BEAR! (What?) Oh, I was just trying to break the ice!Baby, you must be a broom, you just swept me off my feet!Baby, you are so sweet you put Hershey’s out of business!I dropped a tear in the ocean, they day I find it is the day I will stop loving you.If I was Peter Pan and I had to fly, YOU would be my happy thought.

It is almost Valentines Day! Pick up lines are always a favorite any time of the year, If you do not have a special someone this year, here are a few that might just have you win the

heart of someone you have been wanting!

Make this Valentine’s Day one to remember! Whether you are spending it with a loved one or a close friend here are some guidelines, and suggestions:

Although flowers and candy may work for some •girls, others just think they are a “no effort” gift. They are also not very original.Spending the day together is a great idea, but if •you decide to do this have something exciting planned so the day is not just like every other day.If you are on a budget, get creative and make •them something. After all, it is the thought that counts! If you decide to go with the flowers and candy, •DO NOT get low fat candy- it might offend your Valentine. If you are a last minute type and end up being •pressed with time, do not resort to giving money, it is kind of tacky, get thema card. That way they know you are thinking about them.

Today, like every other day, is a new day! But, you need to treat it with caution, stay away from stairs! I

see you falling down a flight today.

The best things in life are truly free! Take that special someone for a walk today, start an epic battle snow ball battle, then go home and drink some hot cocoa.

You’re feeling artistic. Borrow a camera and go take some pictures. They can be of anything! Try to

concentrate on nature, it’s so beautiful out!

Take it easy today; you know the question to every answer up on the board. Let someone else answer for once.

Friends are a key element in your life right now. Let them know how much you appreciate them by taking

them out for hot chocolate!

Your newest homework assignment is stumping you. Ask a friend for help, they know the answer you’re

looking for.

That certain someone you’ve been crushing on doesn’t seem to be interested at the moment. Give them a couple of days and then invite them over to

hang. They will warm right up to you.

You’re a little confused about something in life right now. That’s okay, in a day or two the bigger picture

will come into focus.

It’s time to take the position as the leader in your group. Get to it! Your project will turn out to be amazing!

Don’t you think it’s time for you to get out and make some new friends? Be outgoing today and go talk to

some new people, you won’t regret it.

You’ve been told that your smile could end a war. Lately some of your friends have been feuding, send them each a friendly smile, it will bring your whole

crew back together in no time!

You’ve been working hard all quarter, now it’s time for you to take a little bit of a break. Take it easy;

kick back and just relax, you deserve it!
