Waste Collection
Service
If you’ve had problems with the roll out ofthe new waste collections service and stillhave trouble getting through on the 01352
703350 number, please phone or email me and I will email the officer and driver whohave been appointed to help with trouble shooting in our area. Flintshire CountyCouncil Waste service had 5,000 calls in the first week and it was difficult to getthrough so many residents were contacting me and I was emailing the problemsdirect to the relevant people. Also let me know, if you need assisted collection fromyour property and I can arrange for the bins to have yellow stickers. A man calledKeith has been helping with this, visiting some of the residents who are strugglingwith the new service.
The white, hessian sacks that are used for tin and plastic have been available onrequest over the last 18 months and still are available, by request only, they werenot rolled out to everyone with the new bins. Blue bags are also available for paperand card. If you do not have a blue box, that can also be requested, if you use yourown container that should be fine. Some properties in Treuddyn such as Ffordd yFelin have never had brown bins for garden waste so some have ordered those forthe new rounds. I believe the brown bins are currently out of stock but should beavailable soon.
After the initial pilot areas, the council rolled out the new collection service to 42,000properties which was a huge task. Rounds were changed and new rounds havebeen added and learned by the operatives this has caused problems with the crewhaving to get used to the rounds while dealing with the new service. Sometimesinformation has not been passed on about assisted collections. The lorries also haveto be emptied more frequently because of the increased amount of recycling beingcollected, something else the operatives have had to get used to.
The recycling has had to be introduced because of statutory targets set by theWelsh Government to reduce waste going to landfill. The county must reach a
10
recycling target of 52% by March 2012. For every tonne going to landfill there is acost of £400 that’s £200 in taxes, plus £200 penalty.
Any extra rubbish that won’t fit in the black wheelie bin will not be collected. Thecrew will put left over black bags and rubbish into the bins to be collected next timeand a sticker will be left on the bin explaining to the householder what is happening. They are doing this to encourage people to recycle. The only things that aresupposed to go in the black bin are nappies, hard plastics such as yogurt pots andfruit punnets (best advice is just recycle any bottle shaped plastic without the lidson), cigarette ends and dust from vacuums. Over Christmas, from the middle ofDecember to the middle of January, the black bin collections will change to weeklycollections. Recycling centres will also be open every day except Christmas day.
The Welsh Government gave the authority a grant of £3.38m to help with thetransition to the recycling scheme.
Regarding the old black bins, you can keep these for your own use, return them toany recycling site, our nearest ones are Nercwys and Hope or ask for them to becollected by phoning the department (703350).
If you have any queries, the number for waste collection and recycling is currently01352 703350, if you have trouble getting through contact me, Carolyn Thomas on01352 770946 or email [email protected]

Street lighting
Scottish Power contractors `Freedom’ have been carrying outsome upgrading work to the street lights in Treuddyn.Unfortunately, this caused a problem to a cul-de-sac along MaesGlyndwr where the lights were out for a few days. Theupgrading work needs to be done to bring the street lights up tostandard and the community council are working with FlintshireCounty Council Street lighting (who took over as contractorsfrom NWP) to do this work while it is being offered at asubsidised rate. It will also reduce the annual street lighting billas the lamps will be more efficient.
Fees & Charges
The Council is currently looking at possibly increasing fees andcharges and the introduction of some new ones, eg: transport toplaces of further education for students 16+ and applying a strictcharging policy for those students under 16 who have hadconcessions and would normally have to pay £55 per term.
They’re also looking at increasing this to £75 per term. Because nothing hasbeen set and it’s just preliminary discussion the report was markedconfidential but it was leaked to the press so it’s no longer confidential. Ihave made strong representation against this and also about increasing thecost of school dinners. Other topics up for discussion were the introductionof car parking charges to make it consistent across Flintshire.
Winter Fuel Payments Hotline – 0845 915 1515

Topics
Years 5 and 6 are currently studying World War 2. If anybody
has any wartime artefacts or childhood memories they wish to
share with us then please contact Mrs Eleri Harper (class teacher)
at the school (770304). We will be very grateful for any help.
The children from years 3 and 4 had a crime day as part of their
Forensic Science topic. A laptop was ‘stolen’ by a member of staff
and the pupils had to work in small groups to examine evidence and
solve the crime.
Jeremy Edwards, a member of the Crime Scene Investigation Unit,
came to the school to show the children how fingerprints and
evidence is gathered at crime scenes by the police.
PC Debbie Barker arrested the culprits-Mrs Alison Lewis and Mrs
Kate Harding during Friday’s assembly!! The children had a
fantastic experience using CSI techniques and worked well in small
groups to solve the crime!!
The children in the Foundation Phase are looking at celebrations in
various faiths such as Divali and Hannukah. This will lead to them
looking at Advent in the run up to Christmas.
Mrs Kate Harding
The Governors and Staff wish to express their thanks to Mrs Kate
Harding who has been our Acting Headteacher for the past 12
months and will leave us at the end of December. She has worked
very hard to move the school forward. We are very grateful for
all her efforts and would like to wish her well in her future
career.
Headteacher
The Governors are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr
Michael O’Grady as the permanent Headteacher of Parc Y Llan,
who will take up his post in January 2012. He is currently working
with Mrs Harding, Staff and Governors, attending meetings and

♪ Auld Lang Syne ♫
Words adapted from a traditional song by RabbieBurns (1759 – 96)
“Should auld acquaintances get forgotten and (how on earthdoes it go?) we’ll drink a cup of something or other…..”
It gets belted out in millions of homes, pubs, clubs andrestaurants at midnight on New Year’s Eve but hardlyanyone knows the correct words.
The first line will probably come out right because aroundone in five can get that far. But after that it’s downhill allthe way wi’ Robert Burns’ Scottish phrases.
The end result is a mixture of the right words, mumblingand people making up their own version as they go along.
Many sing “for the sake of auld lang syne” – a line whichdoesn’t exist at all in the song – or put in “for auld lang syne,my friend” instead of “my dear”.
The title literally means “Old long since”, but is taken torepresent the phrase “days long past” or “times gone by”.
Burns sent the words to the British Museum around 1788and suggested a tune. The words survived but his tune didnot. Luckily, for midnight singers a different tune becamethere version used today.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?
CHORUS
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp,
And surely I’ll be mine,
And we’ll tak a cup o kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!
We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou’d the gowans fine,
But we’ve wander’d monie a weary fit,
Sin auld lang syne.
We twa hae paidl’d in the burn
Frae morning sun till tine,
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
Sin auld lang syne.
And there’s a hand my trust fiere,
And gie’s a hand a thine,
And we’ll tak aright guid-willie waught,
For auld lang syne

Mistletoe
How to cultivate your
own mistletoe.
“Save some mistletoe berries in a matchbox until March, whenthey will be fully ripe, then cut a shallow groove in the
underside of a branch of fair-sized apple tree, squash a coupleof berries into it and smear them very lightly over with amuddy finger to help hold them in place. Do this several
times, using different branches on more than one tree, sincenot all your berries will take. If they do, you should start to
see signs of life 12 to 18 months later, but it’s very slowgrowing – a decent bunch of mistletoe takes about sevenyears. It’s also a bit hit and miss; it works best if you use
berries from British-grown mistletoe – and ideally taken froma bunch that itself grew on apple.”
Mistletoe plants grow on a wide range of host trees, and commonly reduce theirgrowth but can kill them with heavy infestation. All mistletoes are hemi-parasites,using the host mainly for water and mineral nutrients. However, the mistletoe firstsprouts from bird feces on the trunk of the tree and in its early stages of life it takesnutrients from this source
Most mistletoe seeds are spread by birds, such as the Mistle Thrush in Europe. Theseeds are excreted in their droppings and stick to twigs, or more commonly the birdgrips the fruit in its bill, squeezes the sticky coated seed out to the side, and thenwipes its bill clean on a suitable branch
Ecological importance
Mistletoe was often considered a pest that kills trees and devalues natural habitats, but was recently recognized as an ecological keystone species, an organism thathas a disproportionately pervasive influence over its community. A broad array of
30
animals depend on mistletoe for food, consuming the leaves and young shoots, transferring pollen between plants, and dispersing the sticky seeds.
A study of mistletoe in junipers concluded that more juniper berries sprout in standswhere mistletoe is present, as the mistletoe attracts berry-eating birds which also eatjuniper berries Such interactions lead to dramatic influences on diversity, as areaswith greater mistletoe densities support higher diversities of animals. Thus, ratherthan being a pest, mistletoe can have a positive effect on biodiversity, providing highquality food and habitat for a broad range of animals in forests and woodlandsworldwide.
Mistletoe is commonly used as a Christmas decoration, though such use was rarelyalluded to until the 18th century. According to ancient Christmas custom, a man anda woman who meet under a hanging of mistletoe were obliged to kiss. The custommay be of Scandinavian origin.
"The mistletoe is still hung up in farm-houses and kitchens at Christmas, and the young men have the privilege of kissing the girls under it, pluckingeach time a berry from the bush. When the berries are all plucked theprivilege ceases."

Coed Talon was often known as `The Black’ or `Black
Diamond’ because of its coal mining history. A Pontybodkin
resident showed me her birth certificate and she was registered as
being born in `The Black’
I was recently told the following ditty which is very true!
- Often I’ve been caught out thinking it’s a warm day in
Pontybodkin and then gone to Treuddyn and wished I’d put a
jacket on! Also, you can often see the rain turn to snow as you
get to by the chimney at the old works in Coed Talon.
“When it’s raining in PontblyddynIt’s snowing in The Black& When you go up to TreuddynIt’s enough to blow you back!”

Twas the Night before Christmas Poem
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!
"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.
34
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.
His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"
