Each member of this Lodgeneeds to step up and do hisart, in whatever way he

can, to make Yucca ValleyLodge be the best it canbe.

Last month, I included a smallessay on a brother that does

not return to the Lodge whenhe felt like no one caredwhether he was there or not.The difference betweengrowing a Lodge and havingthat same lodge atrophyingmay well come down to anactive, involved mentorshipprogram for young (or new)Masons.

    Masonic retention doesn't just

"happen". It is the duty of theMaster of the Lodge to fill anyvoids in the members'Masonic education. An activeMasonic Mentor Program isthe key to Masonic retention.Masonic education is one ofthe most valuable assets that alodge can possess. Teach andbe taught. Help and behelped. Share information.Print an appropriate lesson and

hand it to a new member ... bethey an Entered Apprentice, aFellow Craft or a newly raisedMaster Mason.

The Editors CornerBro. T.C. Dowden 32

    Our Newest Entered Apprentices

    Learning about Free-masonry's history, its

symbolism and its spirituallight is necessary for theirongoing progress.

All Lodge Members (not justthe Master) should also beencouraged to think abouttheir new members and askthose new members if theyhave any questions they mightbe able to help him with.Soon, the new member feels

that he has attained theknowledge so that he, too, canbecome a valued member ofthe lodge.

The future of our Lodge isentirely dependent upon newmembers finding, joining, andassimilating into the Lodge.New men come to thefraternity with a set ofexpectations, gleaned fromwhat theyve read, seen on the

History Channel, or learnedfrom their fathers orgrandfathers. We need tolearn what those expectations

are help the new brother them.

    Masonic Working Grou

Something I have wanteddo for some time, and havreceived approval from thWM, is to establish aMasonic Education WorkGroup. This group woultogether to learn, exploreshare Masonic informatioand thereby help each othlearn those things thatseparate our fraternity frosocial clubs. There will nbe a restriction on the levmason who may attend. will meet the third Thursof the Month at the LodgThe WM plans on servinglight dinner as well to rouout the experience. If yowish to join in, come to thLodge at 6:30 on the thirdThursday!

In the past month, weve welcomed two new

Entered Apprentices to our Lodge. On the left isD.J. Ross and on the right is Joe Jaynes. These two

young men have sought us out, petitioned, beeninvestigated, voted on by the Brethren, and beenobligated. Young men like them are the life-bloodof our fraternity.

Welcome them, assist them, and keep theminterested in finding what they have joined us tofind. Do you know who the other EAs and Fellow

Crafts are and how theyre doing?

    THE MASONIC LODGEDUES CARD

I hold in my hand a little scrap of paper2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches in size. It is of nointrinsic worth, not a bond, not a check

or receipt for valuables, yet it is mymost priceless possession. It is mymembership card in a Masonic Lodge.

It tells me that I have entered into aspiritual kinship with my fellowMasons to practice charity in word anddeed; to forgive and forget the faults ofmy brethren; to hush the tongues ofscandal and innuendo; to care for thecrippled, the hungry and the sick, and tobe fair and just to all mankind.

It tells me that no matter where I maytravel in the world, I am welcome tovisit a place where good fellowshipprevails among brothers and friends.

It tells me that my loved ones, myhome, and my household are under theprotection of every member of this

When I was informed that thetheme for this months

Trestleboard is mentoring, and was asked for anyanecdotes, articles or ideas, the first thing that came tomind was a podcast Idlistened to several months agoentitled Kinds of Masons. Its something of an

enthusiasm of youth meetswisdom of experience story;its not about history,Masonic symbols, or regalia -but about people. Its alsosomething of a humorous talethat sticks with you.

great Fraternity, who has sworn todefend and protect mine as I have swornto defend and protect theirs.

It tells me that should I ever beovertaken by adversity or misfortunethrough no fault of my own, the handsof every Mason on the face of the earthwill be stretched forth to assist me in mynecessities.

And finally, it tells me that when myfinal exit from the stage of life has beenmade, there will be gathered around mylifeless body, friends and brothers whowill recall to mind my virtues, thoughthey be but few, and will forget myfaults, though they may be many.

It tells me that, and a great deal more, this little card, and makes me proud yethumble, that I can possess this passportinto a Society of Friends and brothersthat are numbered in the millions.

    SO MOTE IT BE!!

This months theme also fitsin very well with something Iwould like to get startedwithin the lodge: a mentoringprogram for new Masons, which takes the currentcandidate training we dobeyond just teaching themtheir proficiency. Theres aprogram for it already

developed but to make thishappen it takes mentors,Master Masons willing tocommit to the task, and ableto spend at least one night(perhaps day) every weekworking with candidates fordegrees and those seeking

further light. If you areinterested in becoming parof the Mentors program, seek me out and make sureadd your name to the list omentors for Yucca ValleyMasonic Lodge. If you are willing to workbut Dont think you knowenough to be a mentor?,then add your name to thelist. We can learn togethe

Famous Mason: Did You Know?Three future Commandants of the U. S. Marine Corpsbecame Freemasons in Overseas Lodge No. 40 during itsshort existence: General John A. Lejeune, probably themost outstanding Marine of the Twentieth Century for

whom Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune NC, and John ALejeune Lodge No. 350, Quantico, VA, were named;General Wendell C. Neville; and General Lemuel C.Shepherd.

General Shepherd tells this story of General Lejeunesinitiation as it originated with fellow U S. Army officers inthe second Army Division when General Lejeunecommanded it:

General Lejeune is reported to have called his driver andtold him he was going to Coblenz. When he named thehour of departure, the drivers face fell. I was going to ask

if I could get off this afternoon, sir, he said. No, you hadbetter come along, the General replied, You will haveplenty of time to yourself in Coblenz. Yes sir, said thedriver, although he was not wholly cheerful. Where to,sir? he asked as he was entering Coblenz about threeoclock that afternoon. The driver gave his chief a peculiarlook as he nodded that he understood. At the gate in frontof the Temple, General Lejeune tarried a moment to tell thedriver to be back promptly at seven oclock. But, sir, wasthe smiling reply, I also have been notified to report herethis afternoon, and together they entered the Temple totake their First Degrees. Generals Lejeune and Shepherd

were raised in this same Lodge on the same night.

When General Shepherd, then a company commander, submitted his petition, he was sponsored and coached bythe company gunnery sergeant of his company. Heelaborated and evaluated much later saying, Thus didOverseas Lodge develop and strengthen a fellowshipbetween men of all ranks in the Army and the MarineCorps.

New and Improved Yucca Valley Lodge Web Site!

    Brethren,

I am pleased to announce that thenew lodge website is up and

running athttp://www.Masons802.org.Although it is not complete, it isentirely functional. I envisionthis site to be a living breathingrepresentation of our lodge. Itwill provide a format for ourlodge, as a whole, to both keepthe membership of the lodgeinformed and engaged but alsoprovide a way of interacting withthe public. By allowing the

brethren to post articles andpapers that they have written, poste-books and papers by otherauthors on Masonry as well asmaintain an archived collection ofthe Trestleboard, we can ensurethat the lodge membership andthe public can have a better, moreinformed idea of what we, as alodge, are doing.

    Brothers who perhaps can not

make it to lodge due to health ortransportation issues can stillactively engage with our lodge

through the site. I also hope thatthis website will begin to serveas a recruiting tool. Bro.Dowden has already set up and

begun maintaining a Facebookpage for the Lodge. Along withongoing social networking andthe maintaining of an activewebsite we should be able toinspire more men withoutmasonic affiliation to requestinformation and hopefullypetition.

Through some basic research Ihave found that very few lodges

are taking steps like these tobecome more technologicallysavvy and relevant. I hope thatwe, as a Lodge, throughproactive efforts will be able toexpand Freemasonry to ourcommunity, state and country.

Additionally, I would like toextend an offer to any brotherwho is an affiliate member ofYucca Valley Lodge #802 or

may hold an affiliation withanother lodge. I will design anddevelop a website for any

    B2B Brother to Brother Section

Masonic lodge, free of chargewould just ask that therespective lodge pay for hostiwhich would be no more than

$70 per year. I also will needsupport from the Secretary ofthe respective Lodge to set upthe site and would then ask ththe lodge elect a "webmaster"regularly update it. I wouldmake myself available forupdates and technical supportbut could quickly find myselfoverwhelmed without help.

    You can make these requests

offer suggestions to me viaphone at 760-343-8175 or viaemail [email protected]
