Dear Trenton Freedom Fans,

On behalf of everyone at the Freedom, welcome to the Sun National Bank Center and to the Tren-ton Freedom’s second season.

In 2014, a new era of indoor football hit the red and blue turf. Your Trenton Freedom took to the turf like William Wallace took to the battlefield in the movie “Braveheart.” We quickly compiled the best record in our division and finished in first place in the National Division. Not too bad for an expansion team that started two months late in preparing the team to play professional football. Unfortunately, our goal of a PIFL championship was cut short in the National Division championship game. But not every story has a sad ending. We are back for our second season with some of the same great players and coaches, along with a few more sponsors than we had last season. We added some needed people to our front office and we have all been working tirelessly to get our fans and sponsors the PIFL championship they cheer for on every play.

The Schubiger and Williams family want to acknowledge an important ingredient to the Freedom’s success last season, you the fans. It was through your extraordinary support and, in particular, our season ticket holders that we are able to have a second season here at the Sun National Bank Center. At every home game, the enthusiastic cheers of thousands greeted our players and staff. The energy created by our fans not only motivated our players, but helped undermine the opposition.

We’ve had a great offseason, but we’ve only just begun. Our players and coaches will continue to work tirelessly to return the Freedom to the level of play that you deserve. We are building a team you will be proud of in 2015 and hopefully for many years to come.

Our mission from day one has been to assemble the talent we need to be consistent and competitive in every quarter in every game. We have been focused and disciplined as an organization, acquiring the right players for the positions who will represent our organization exceptionally, both on and off the field. Step-by-step, we are building a smart, tough, disciplined football team that will play this game with the passion and energy the fans deserve.

On behalf of our entire organization, we would like to personally thank you for your unwavering support of our team and the commitment you have shown to our players, coaches and staff. It means everything to us. Our collective expectation is to put ourselves in position to compete for the PIFL title every year and I’m confident we are taking the necessary steps to do just that.

This second season promises to be even more thrilling and action-packed. We are glad you could be part of this football season.

Sincerely,

The Schubiger and Williams Families

A Trenton Freedom fan’s guide to

Learning the Professional Indoor Football League

T his season, the Trenton Freedom will be playing their second season in the Profes-sional Indoor Football League (PIFL). The

rules of play can be a little tricky for fans to adjust to as opposed to the NFL or college football. Like last year, let’s give you a refresher on the rules.

Field of Play Take what you know about football and con-fine it into the size of a hockey rink. Instead of 100 yards in length, the PIFL field is 50 yards long by 28 yards wide. The endzones are between five and eight yards in depth and can be rounded because of hockey board configurations. Like any other football field, lines are marked every five yards parallel to the endzone and num-bered 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 (midfield) to indicate field location and goal-line proximity.

Formations On offense, instead of eleven players on a field per NFL/College team, each PIFL team is required the following:• Eight players on field.• Two offensive guards and a center must be on the line of scrimmage (LOS) prior to snap. (Note: One of the two guards can report as an elligible tight end and therefore be capable to receive passes)• No more than a quarterback and a running back may line up in the backfield (also known as offensive box). • One player must be in motion prior to the snap, but cannot be in the offensive box or be-yond the LOS when the ball is snapped. For teams on defense, they are required the following:• Eight players on field• Three defensive linemen on LOS.• Two linebackers, only one is blitz-eligible per play. The other helps in coverage, but cannot cover beyond five yards from the LOS.• Defensive backs may line up across LOS from an eligible receiver, whom is not in backfield, and one safety helps in coverage.

Scoring Just like the outdoor game, when the team crosses the endzone with possession, whether by passing, rushing, returning or intercepting a pass, it’s a touchdown worth six points. Ad-

ditionally, a Point After Touchdown (PAT) field goal is one point, and an additional pass or rush into the endzone gives a team two points. A safety is also worth two points, while a field goal attempted not following a touchdown is worth three points.

Differences in the Game Though there are a lot of similarities in scor-ing between the PIFL and the outdoor game, there are ways teams can score points unlike the outdoor game because of the smaller field. One change is an uno —a kickoff that goes over the crossbar and between the uprights. A result of that is one point for the kicking team, and the ball is then placed on the receiving team’s five-yard line. A second word to add to your indoor foot-ball dictionary is rouge. Whenever a kickoff is tackled by the receiving team in its endzone, the kicking team gets one point. The football is then placed on the receiving team’s five-yard line and the receiving team begins possession. Another difference to the game is with the PAT. In the NFL or college football, if a defense blocks an extra-point kick, intercepts a pass on a two-point conversion or recovers a fumble, the play is dead and no team receives points. In the PIFL, defenses can capitalize on the failed PAT attempt and be awarded two points when the following occurs:• When the offense tries to pass for a two-point conversion, the defense intercepts the pass and returns to the opposing endzone.• When the football is fumbled whether on a run, or any exchange from the center to the quar-terback, the defense recovers and returns it to the opposing endzone.

Overtime Both teams receive the same amount of pos-sessions starting at the 25-yard line and whoever scores more within the same amount of posses-sions will win. In the first overtime (when each team com-pletes one possession) the PAT may be a one or two point attempt. In all succeeding overtime pe-

riods, teams may only attempt a two-point PAT by passing or rushing the football. 2

Your Broadcast Team in the Booth

Mike Samsel is in his 2nd year as a member of the Trenton Freedom broadcast team and in his first season as the team’s Play-by-Play An-

nouncer. He was the Color Commentator last season. Samsel is no stranger to the listeners of 107.7 FM The Bronc. He has called several State Championship games in New Jersey on 107.7 as a part of the WBCB Sports Network. He is currently the lead play-by-play announcer at West Chester University. Along with that, Samsel can also be seen on SFBN Talks High School Sports, which is televised on the Comcast Network, as a Co-Host and Feature Reporter. “Being the play-by-play announcer of the Trenton Freedom is very exciting for me personally and profes-sionally,” Samsel said. “I’ve had a lot of opportunities to call high school championships in Mercer County. Now I’m really hoping to call a professional championship.” A 2006 graduate of the Connecticut School of Broadcasting, Mike has worn several hats throughout the broadcasting world and continues to today. Mike’s full-time job is the Production Director of 1520 WCHE in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He also works several freelance jobs including as a Spotter for Compass Media Networks’ coverage of NFL Football. Samsel, known for his high energy style, along with analyst Sean Lerman are sure to provide an entertaining broadcast throughout the 2015 Freedom football season. Mike will also host the Trenton Freedom Coach’s Show with Kevin O’Hanlon for the 2015 season.

Sean Lerman joins the Trenton Freedom broadcast team this year to do the color commentary along-side play-by-play announcer Mike Samsel.

Lerman is from Philadelphia and grew up as an avid fan of local professional sports. He graduated from Bloomsburg University in 2013 with a degree in tele-communications. Following his graduation, he moved started working as a play-by-play announcer, radio en-gineer and news anchor for 1490 WBCB in Levittown, Pennsylvania. Like Samsel, with his time at WBCB, Ler-man is no stranger of broadcasting on 107.7 The Bronc. Lerman was named Sports Director at 1490 WBCB in April of 2014 and continues to serve that position to-day. Recently, he began doing play-by-play for the West Chester University women’s basketball team, and has called numerous games in all sports at nearly every level. He has worked closely with Freedom Head Coach Kevin O’Hanlon in the broadcast booth. Last fall, Ler-man did play-by-play for Neshaminy High School foot-ball games, and Coach O’Hanlon served alongside him as his color commentator for each game. For the 2015 season, Lerman looks forward to being a part of the Trenton Freedom broadcast crew. “The Freedom provide one of the best experiences for a fan that I’ve ever seen,” he said. “The team’s rela-tionship with the community is incredible, and I abso-lutely can’t wait to be a part of it. Some special things

are going to happen this year at the Sun National Bank Center.”8

each ranked third in the PIFL in scoring. He coached quar-terback and PIFL MVP Warren Smith and boasted three first-team All-PIFL selections (QB Warren Smith, Iron-Man Melik Brown and DL Gerrard Bryant) along with two second-team selections (FB Melik Brown and OL Lavon McCoy). He also coached Offen-sive Rookie of the Year Roger Jackson, who led all

downs and 10 interceptions. After 2005, Vena went back to the Albany Conquest. Vena had his most suc-cess playing for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers from 2007 to 2009. During that time, the Pio-neers played in ArenaCup VIII and ArenaCup X. The Pioneers went 41-7 in his three regular seasons at the helm. Recap: In the franchise’s first-ever game and win, the Freedom put forth a stellar first impression to the 1500-plus fans in atten-dance. Plenty of other firsts occurred for the Freedom as Kevin O’Hanlon coached, and won, his first-ever PIFL game, and QB Warren Smith played in his first game against his PIFL team of 2013. Trenton would outscore its National Conference foes 34-3 in the first half and maintain the dominance throughout the rest of the game. In fact, if it hadn’t been for a TC Stevens field goal as time expired in the second quarter, Richmond would’ve been shut out in the first half. Smith would throw for 171 yards and four touchdowns (all to different receivers), while rushing for 63 yards and two touchdowns. The 17 points given up by the Free-dom defense remains a franchise low as Defenive Coordinator Bob Kohler’s troops would register three sacks, and an intercep-tion returned for a touchdown by DB Dominic Joseph.

Recap: It was Kevin O’Hanlon’s first road trip to Lehigh Valley to face the team whose defense he coordinated the past few seasons. The Freedom lost their first game ever after blowing a 12-point lead with just over three minutes left in the game. Despite two touch-downs apiece from Freedom receivers Antoine Rivera and Roger “Spiderman” Jackson, Steelhawks’ WR Brandon Renford caught six passes for 83 yards, and three touchdowns, including the game-win-ner with just 33 seconds left in the game to completely overcome the deficit. The Freedom had more first downs (23-15), more total yards on offense (297-174) and over 12 minutes more of possession time. However, the last two Freedom drives on offense ended with a turnover on downs and a Warren Smith interception. The Freedom would fail to convert on fourth downs twice, and Smith threw his first two interceptions of the season in the loss.

Recap: Two words that best describe this game would be “offensive shootout.” In the second home game of 2014, the Freedom would score their season high of 66 points in a back-and-forth game to barely edge the Lions. The key highlights of the game came from Freedom WR Landis Williams as he caught five passes for 81 yards and three touchdowns. Williams caught a 45-yard pass from his fellow U of Maine college teammate Warren Smith to give the Freedom a 52-49 lead to end the third quarter. In the fourth, Williams followed with a leaping one-handed touchdown to give the Freedom a 10 point lead with under 50 seconds left in the game. Both QBs Smith and the Lions’ Antwon Young combined for 469 passing yards and 13 touchdowns, while both teams would each rush for over 60 yards, and five touch-downs combined.

Recap: It was the second trip for the Freedom to Lehigh Valley in three weeks. No love lost as penalties between both teams were frequent. The Freedom would start strong. A fumble recovered in the endzone by LB Jeffrey Morgan and a kick return touchdown by WR Jaquan Bryant gave Trenton an early two-score lead. Three touchdowns by Steelhawks’ WR Scott Pillar catapulted Lehigh Valley to a four-point lead at halftime. The second half started with a touchdown run by Steelhawks’ QB Adam Bednarik and the Freedom needed to play catch-up. A touchdown by Freedom WR Roger Jackson, followed by a pick-six by Morgan, gave the Free-dom a 36-35 lead after three quarters. Steelhawks kicker Michael Barnard kicked two field goals, and an uno in the fourth quarter, but Trenton would fail to score in the frame. A late false start pen-alty near the goal line hindered the Freedom’s chance at overtime.

Recap: The Freedom scored just 16 points in the first 58:13 of the game, and found no consistency on offense. The final 1:47 of the game started with amazing, highlight-reel touchdown catch by Roger “Spiderman” Jackson over the dasher pads to finally spark life into the Freedom offense. A four-yard touchdown reception by Landis Williams and a field goal by kicker Shawn Leo helped the Freedom outscore Richmond 17-0 in the fourth quarter. The Freedom defense put the team on its back as it tallied six sacks, four fumble recoveries, and seven tackles for a loss to give the Raiders’ new QB Phil Konopka a difficult time under center. Also having a difficult time under center was Freedom QB Warren Smith who after a touchdown on the first drive of the game, threw two interceptions and did not throw another touchdown until he found Jackson over the dasher pads in the fourth quarter.

Recap: The final score may not show exactly that, but it took anoth-er fourth quarter scoring outburst to seal another Freedom victory. The Freedom took a 14-6 lead after one, but the visiting Stampede outscored Trenton 23-10 in the second quarter. They tallied two unos from the leg of kicker Cap Poklemba, two rushing touchdowns by QB EJ Nemeth and a blocked kick returned for a touchdown. The Free-dom responded with a goose egg in the third quarter—which marked the team’s third straight game failing to score a point in a quarter. In the fourth, touchdown passes from Freedom QB Warren Smith to receivers Mo McDonald and Roger Jackson, followed by rushing touchdowns by Smith and FB Melik Brown sealed the 13-point vic-tory. The Freedom defense continued their strong play with six sacks on Nemeth.

Recap: It was a tale of two halves for the Freedom offense—first half rushing, second half passing. FB Melik Brown rushed for two of the three touchdowns in quarters one and two, while Raiders FB Kenny Jones found the endzone twice on the ground as well. The first half would end with the Freedom leading 24-21. Both teams scored seven points in the third quarter to maintain the three point difference. In the fourth, Freedom QB Warren Smith would throw three touchdown passes. But the Freedom would have their 45-28 lead narrowed to a 45-42 lead before one of the boldest plays of the year. With OL Lavon McCoy eligible as a tight end, a play action fake to the FB Brown resulted in a wide-open McCoy in the endzone for a three-yard touchdown in the final minute of the game to finalize the game’s score at 52-42. The win extended the Freedom’s win streak to three games.1st 15:00 RIC - Stevens uno TRE 0 – RIC 1 10:58 TRE - Leo, Shawn 27-yd field goal TRE 3 – RIC 1 06:47 RIC - Stevens 29-yd field goal TRE 3 –RIC 4 03:40 TRE - Brown 4-yd run - (Leo kick) TRE 10 – RIC 4 01:56 RIC - Jones 2-yd run - (Stevens kick) TRE 10 – RIC 11 2nd 14:14 TRE - Jackson 13-yd pass from Smith - (Leo kick) TRE 17 –RIC 11 14:08 TRE - Leo, Shawn uno TRE 18 – RIC 11 10:32 RIC - Jones 1-yd run - (Stevens kick) TRE 18 –RIC 18 01:43 RIC - Stevens 20-yd field goal TRE 18 –RIC 21 00:09 TRE - Brown 2-yd run - (kick fail) TRE 24 – RIC 21 3rd 07:57 TRE - McDonald 13-yd pass from Smith - (Leo kick) TRE 31 – RIC 21 07:07 RIC - Bryant 25-yd pass from Konopka - (Stevens kick) TRE 31 – RIC 28 4th 12:49 TRE - Williams 13-yd pass from Smith - (Leo kick) TRE 38 –RIC 28 05:19 TRE - Bryant 28-yd pass from Smith - (Leo kick) TRE 45 – RIC 28 02:30 RIC - Konopka 2-yd run - (Stevens kick) TRE 45 – RIC 35 01:26 RIC - Hector 30-yd pass from Konopka - (Stevens kick) TRE 45 – RIC 42 00:52 TRE - McCoy 3-yd pass from Smith - (Leo kick) TRE 52 – RIC 42

Recap: With two losses this entire season, both to the Lehigh Val-ley Steelhawks, this was one of the most important regular-season games of the year for the Trenton Freedom. The most ideal way for the Freedom to start the game was to get off to an early lead and maintain it. Freedom WR Roger Jackson would catch a touchdown pass from QB Warren Smith to give Trenton a 7-0 lead after one quarter. The Freedom would go on to lead 28-14 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Steelhawks would score two straight touchdowns to tie the game at 28, but the Freedom would score three-straight touchdowns to regain a large lead and keep it. The third time was the charm as the Trenton Freedom finally came away victorious against the Steelhawks, while building on an exciting rivalry. Smith threw for 170 yards and three touchdowns, while FB Melik Brown also added three trips to the endzone on the ground.

Recap: The first contest between both teams in Harrisburg, the Freedom were able to run their winning streak to five-straight games. After six points in the first quarter, and eight in the sec-ond, the Freedom went on, yet, another second half scoring surge with 43 points, as opposed to just 28 for the Stampede. With the starting FB Melik Brown out, Josh Kamenas took the reps at fullback and did not disappoint. He carried the ball eight times for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Both scores came in the fourth quarter at times when the Freedom needed it the most. Kamenas also added a 36-yard scamper up the left side of the field to become one of the highlights of the Freedom’s 2014 sea-son. It set up a Warren Smith touchdown with 15 seconds left in the game to finalize the score at 57-48.

Recap: Freedom FB Melik Brown provided the shoulder for the Freedom to lean on because the passing game was ineffective. Brown started the game with a 26-yard touchdown run, followed by two more touchdown runs in the first half to keep Trenton competitive. Two interceptions by QB Warren Smith in the first half led the Ham-mers to a 27-point second quarter and a nine-point Freedom deficit come halftime. Smith would find his groove with a touchdown run, followed by touchdowns passes to WRs Antoine Rivera and Roger Jackson to set up fourth-quarter drama. Down 47-46, the game came down to the kicking leg of Shawn Leo from 30 yards out. Leo would drill the field goal through the uprights to give the Freedom a sixth consecutive victory against the 2013 PIFL champs.1st 13:50 TRE - Brown 26-yd run - (Leo kick) TRE 7 – ALA 0 10:20 ALA - McClain 4-yd pass from Hill - (kick fail) TRE 7 – ALA 6 05:30 TRE - Brown 1-yd run - (kick fail) TRE 13 – ALA 6 01:17 TRE - Leo 29-yd field goal TRE 16 – ALA 6 2nd 13:23 ALA -McSwain 3-yd pass from Hill - (Cuko kick) TRE 16 – ALA 13 10:50 ALA - Williams 32-yd interception return - (Cuko kick) TRE 16 – ALA 20 04:35 ALA - McSwain 28-yd pass from Hill - (Cuko kick) TRE 16 – ALA 27 01:23 TRE - Brown 3-yd run - (Leo kick) TRE 23 – ALA 27 00:52 TRE - Leo, Shawn uno TRE 24 – ALA 27 00:20 ALA - McClain 3-yd pass from Hill - (kick fail) TRE 24 – ALA 33 3rd 09:00 TRE - Smith 9-yd run - (Leo kick) TRE 31 – ALA 33 08:17 TRE - Leo, Shawn uno TRE 32 – ALA 33 00:45 ALA -Shipp 10-yd pass from Hill - (kick fail) TRE 32 – ALA 39 4th 13:15 TRE - Rivera 33-yd pass from Smith - (Leo kick) TRE 39 – ALA 39 08:15 ALA - Shipp 25-yd pass from Hill - (Cuko kick) TRE 39 – ALA 46 07:47 ALA - Cuko uno ALA 39 – TRE 47 05:08 TRE - Jackson 21-yd pass from Smith - (Leo kick) TRE 46 – ALA 47 00:05 TRE - Leo 30-yd field goal TRE 49 – ALA 47

Recap: Fire kicker Lindsey Wolfe would end the Freedom’s six-game win streak with a 33-yard field goal as time expired. The game start-ed with a Freedom fumble on the first exchange between center Neil Brown and QB Warren Smith. That and a turnover on downs on Trenton’s ensuing drive resulted in a 14-0 Fire lead after one quar-ter. The Freedom tied the Fire twice, but they never took a lead. With injuries to receivers Antoine Rivera and Landis Williams, the Free-dom’s Smith still ran for two touchdowns while throwing five touch-downs—three to Roger Jackson. Jackson would have the best game of his young, professional career with nine catches, 177 yards, and three touchdowns, but the Freedom would still come up short.

Recap: If there was a team that the Freedom didn’t want to face fol-lowing a loss to end their six-game win streak, it was the Nashville Ven-om. Head Coach Billy Back and the Venom had scorched opposing defenses with their high-powered, high-volume offense. AJ McKenna would get his first start for Nashville, and it was as if he played with his receivers for weeks. Like in Week 10 against Alabama, Freedom QB Warren Smith and the offense showed inconsistency, and it would harm them immediately. Nashville would get off to a 21-0 start after the first quarter with the help of receiver Phillip Barnett’s two receiving touchdowns. The Freedom would fight back to within eight points, but a late interception and the high volume of the Venom offense proved too much for the Freedom to handle. After a six-game win streak, this game marked a second straight loss going into the playoffs.1st 11:52 NAS - Barnett 12-yd pass from McKenna (Reed kick) TRE 0 –NAS 7 11:19 NAS - Reed uno TRE 0 – NAS 8 09:20 NAS - Ogletree 5-yd run (kick fail) TRE 0 – NAS 14 03:49 NAS - Barnett 16-yd pass from McKenna (Reed kick) TRE 0 – NAS 21 2nd 14:33 TRE - Brown 1-yd run (kick fail) TRE 6 – NAS 21 12:35 NAS - Bradley 5-yd run (2 pt. conv fail) TRE 6 – NAS 27 07:50 TRE - Smith 5-yd run (kick fail) TRE 12 – NAS 27 05:35 NAS - Jolly 11-yd pass from McKenna (Reed kick) TRE 12 – NAS 34 01:56 TRE - McDonald 9-yd pass from Smith (2 pt. conv) TRE 20 – NAS 34 3rd 15:00 NAS - Reed uno TRE 20 – NAS 35 10:40 TRE - Smith 16-yd run (Leo kick) TRE 27 – NAS 35 08:26 NAS - Jolly 45-yd pass from McKenna (Reed kick) TRE 27 – NAS 42 06:21 TRE - Bryant 37-yd pass from Smith (2 pt. conv) TRE 35 – NAS 42 04:21 NAS - Jolly 21-yd pass from McKenna (Reed kick) TRE 35 – NAS 49 03:46 NAS - Reed uno TRE 35 –NAS 50 01:07 TRE - Smith 15-yd run (Leo kick) TRE 42 – NAS 50 4th 13:01 NAS - Murray 12-yd pass from McKenna (Reed kick) TRE 42 – NAS 57 08:21 NAS - Stewart 39-yd interception return (Reed kick) TRE 42 – NAS 64 02:59 TRE - Bryant 6-yd pass from Smith (2 pt. conv fail) TRE 48 – NAS 64

Recap: The Freedom played their first playoff game and started the game versus their rivals on a high note. Two first quarter touchdown passes from QB Warren Smith to WRs Roger Jackson and Maurice McDonald paved the way to a 17-7 start after one quarter. The Freedom secondary would get torched in that frame by the Steelhawks’ Troy Pascley on a 40-yard bomb for the Steelhawks’ only score. They would respond to the Freedom in the second with a 38-yard TD pass from QB Shane McSweeny to Pascley, a Mike Barnard field goal and a pick-six by DB Dwayne Hollis. A Smith-to-Jackson Freedom touchdown tied the contest 24-24 at the half. Neither team scored in the third quarter, and the fourth quarter was up for grabs. It began with another Pascley receiving score, plus a Barnard uno and 27-yard field goal giving the Steelhawks 11 unanswered points. Both teams would alternate touchdowns, but who but Troy Pascley would put the game out of reach in the late stages of the game? Pascley scored on a 42-yard bomb giving him his fourth touchdown of the game and third score of 38-plus yards. The Steelhawks would advance to play the winner of the game between the Nashville Venom and the Columbus Lions for the PIFL Championship.
