The white skin, red lips and expressionless face are a beauty

trademark.

Geisha in Japan are almost a conscious anachronism nowadays.

However, geisha still exist in modern Japan. The kind of music

and dance they perform, the kimonos they wear, the hair and

make-up that create their distinctive look: all hark back to 19th-

century popular culture and traditional Japanese ideals of femi-

nine beauty and deportment.

Back then, geisha were fashion leaders — all fashionable women

used to whiten their skin. The kimono was the common style

of dress, and adjusting the collar at the back of the nape was

considered sexy, so the geisha pulled theirs back further than

anyone. An obi, or sash, worn low on the hips, was considered

chic, so, of course, the geisha’s were worn lowest. Not only did

geisha accentuate everything that was feminine and erotic in

popular culture, they started most of the trends in clothing, hair

and make-up.

THE LOOK

Western fashion has taken considerable

direction from geisha style over the years.

On the spring/summer 2006 catwalk, Val-

entino had mask-like geisha visages, with

pomegranate lips floating on porcelain

faces, and Dries van Noten had geisha

hair, sculpted into curvilinear rolls and

adorned with oriental ornaments.

10

Page 11: Trend 2011

The growing interest in geisha and their exotic appearance have spawned various popular culture phenomena both in Japan and in the west. Geisha always wear kimono. Apprentice geisha wear highly colourful kimono with extravagant obi.

THE LOOK

Equestrian style, there’s something

incredibly chic about such a pulled

together look.

Usually, it’s associated with some-

thing slightly pretentious but there’s

definitely room to have fun with it.

So saddle up and sport this.
