Day 1Leymebamba – Laguna de los Cóndores

06:30

After breakfast we will start our walk and

/ or ride from the hostel. Leymebamba

community is located 2200 meters above

sea level, along the route will cross pre-

Hispanic trails with typical cloud forest

vegetation. In this habitat is possible to

see birds like the Andean Condor, Andean

Toucan, Golden-headed Quetzal,

Tanager, among others. We will walk up to

the 3800 m high, called The Row. Here you

can see Northeast Mountains of the

Peruvian Andes, to get there we will pass

the natural view of San Miguel, the

beautiful gorge of Atuen river, Toronjil

stream (where we will rest and have a

picnic), Jalca of the Wall; and finally

descend to the cabin near the Lake of the

Condors, between mountains and

canyons with lush vegetation.

Day 2 Llactacocha – Mausoleos de Laguna de

los Cóndores

08:00

After breakfast we will walk 10 minutes

uphill from the cabin. Here you can admire

the magical Lake of the Condors,

surrounded by lush vegetation, with an

area of 1km wide and 3km long. We can

observe the cliffs where the mausoleums

of the Chachapoyas culture hide, to go

there we will cross the lake by boat and

climb 100 meters reaching the

archaeological site. It consists of 6

mausoleums that housed mummies and

they are now preserved in the museum of

Leymebamba. Near here we will have a

picnic.

A few minutes walking from the cabin, we

can also observe the ancient

archaeological site of Llaqtacocha

residential or "village of the lake", the site

covers about 33 acres and includes the

remains of about 130 structures, mostly

circular, an elaborate network of drainage ,

paved canals and small bridges of stone

slab. Probably this place was inhabited by

the people buried in the mausoleums.

At the end of the day, if you wish, you can

enjoy riding a boat on the lake and go

fishing for trout for dinner.

Day 3Laguna de los Cóndores – Museo Mallqui o

de Leymebamba

06:30

After breakfast we will come back to

Leymebamba. On the route we will rest

and enjoy a lunchtime picnic. Before we

arrive to Leymebamba, we will visit the

Leymebamba Mallqui Center, that houses

more than 219 mummies and over 2500

burial offerings, recovered from the Lake

of the Condors in a magnificent state of

conservation through archaeological

Project directed by Mallqui Center.

Furthermore this museum has the best

collection of preserved Quipus of Peru that

were found in this area.

Travel tips

Equipment recommended for trekking:

trekking boots, sun hat, hat for the cold

(polar and / or wool), gore tex

windbreaker jacket, short pants gore tex

wind, sunglasses with UV protection,

backpack 40-70 L, water bottle, sunscreen

cream, headlamp with extra batteries, first

aid kit, camera, sleeping bag - 15 ° C, wash

bag and towel, sandals, trek poles.

Climate: In the cloud forest climate is

generally humid with variations of

cloudiness and sunshine in the

morning. You can submit short and

even long periods rains. During the day

we can reach 24 ° C and at night to 5 ° C.

Time zone: Peru is 5 hours behind

Greenwich Mean Time. It has the same

time zone as the Eastern Time Zone of

the United States, but no time setting

between summer and winter.

Immunizations: a vaccine against

yellow fever 10 days before travel is

recommended.

Electricity: No electricity in the cottage
