FAther’s Day in Fort Lauderdale!

DID YOU KNOW? Our 2019 conference inspiration comes from the 1960 comedy film ‘Where the Boys Are’ (based on the 1960 novel of the same name by Glendon Swarthout) about spring break in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The title song “Where the Boys Are” was sung by Connie Francis who also co-starred in a supporting role. The film featured sun, sand and romance. Released in the wintertime, it inspired many American college students to head to Fort Lauderdale for their annual spring break. Visit the iconic Elbo Room Dive Bar that was established in 1938 at 241 South Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, and became a landmark for Fort Lauderdale Beach. The bar was prominently featured in the 1960 film Where the Boys Are.

Our 2019 conference artwork inspiration is the Fort Lauderdale Rain Tree (Albizie saman). The tree was declared a Florida Champion in 1982 by the Florida Division of Forestry, currently measuring in at 61 feet tall, 127 feet wide, 19 feet in circumference, and is around 100 years old. The Fort Lauder-dale City Commission officially designated the tree as protected which means it can only be moved upon the commission’s specific approval. A Commission Protected Tree is a tree, which due to its size, shape, character, age, aesthetic value, species, historical value or any combina-tion thereof declared by the city commission to be a locally unique example of the species. The Rain Tree is so named because its leaves curl during precipitation. An even larger Rain Tree served as the site where castaways built an elaborate tree house in the Disney film Swiss Family Robinson, the highest grossing movie of 1960. The Fort Lauderdale Rain Tree commands a 6-acre plot located at the 400 block of SW 4th Avenue along the New River.
