From the artist: This work is based from a solo “Art Walk” that I did in the summer of 1999 from Queenstown to Timaru. I painted as I journeyed through the high country, camping out or staying in huts and avoiding roads and people and focusing on the spectacular scenery. I was confronted by this extraordinary landscape one day and painted it from memory and a photograph years later (2006/7).

Aho are interwoven threads. They refer to the collective strength of diversity, suggesting unity in tension. I have juxtaposed the mechanical sureness of my aho motif with gestural, discordant colour across a grid that contains and releases painterly control. The grid itself comprises aho, modernist and cultural threads that converge in paint.
