    FIFAWorldCup,tobeheldinSouthArica.AndaccordingtoHorni,thereareotherdevelopmentsaoot,unrelatedtothesoccerthatcouldcontribute

    towardspropellingthelocaltyreproducertothenumberonespota

    positionhebelievesthebrandrichlydeserves!Overcoeeatapopular

    Sandtonhotel,withanimpressivecommandotheEnglishlanguagegiven

    hisGermanheritage,heexplainedhowhehopedtomakeadierence.

    Dieter, virtually your entire career was spent in Europe. What prompted

    you to accept a position in a foreign market, ve years away from

    retirement?

    IbelievemyascinationwithSouthAricainparticular,beganduringmy

    schoolcareer,inthe1960s,whenIwasrstaskedbymyGeography

    teacherto compilean assignmentonSouthAricantownships.Suceit

    tosay,assistanceromtheSouthAricanEmbassyorthistaskhasyetto

    materialise(chuckles),butinthecourseomyresearch,Idevelopedan

    interestorthispartotheworld.

    AtervisitingPEwithmyamilywedecidedtoembracethischallenge.

    Onaproessionallevel,theopportunitiesandchallengesthisnewassignment

    wouldentailwereequallyappealing.HavingenjoyedastrongOEpresence

    andbrandimageormanyyearsinthiscountry,CTSAhadbeenearmarked

    orcapitalinvestmentbywayoplantcapabilityandnewtechnologytoboostcurrentcapacityorthelocalproductiononewpassengerandtruckproducts

    allowhichweplantointroducetothemarketduringthecourseonextyear.

    Im particularly pleased to hear of the impending release of new truck

    tyre products?

    Overthepastsevenyears,weveinvestedtothesumoR350millioninthe

    modernising,upgrading,R&DandproductionacilitiesothePortElizabeth

    actorysoastogearuportheproductiononotonlythenewtrucktyrerange,

    butalsotoimprovetheenvironmentalriendlinessoourproductsandplant

    andtoensureweareoperatingwithstateotheartmachinery.

    Overthenexttwoyears,weplantoinvestaurtherR100millionintheplant,

    AnewerahasheraldedinorContinentalTyreSAandallatthe

    hands o a new man at the helm. A devout Conti Man, as he

    likestodescribehimsel,DieterHornihasspent31yearsinthe

    tyrebusiness,26othemexclusivelydedicatedtotheGerman

    manuacturinggiant,ContinentalAG.Havingspentthegreaterpart

    ohisworkingcareerimmersedinallaspectsothetyrebusiness,

    hisrstandmostlikelylastoverseasassignment,willndhim

    takingoverromClaudioBoezioasMDotheSouthAricanarm

    oContinentalsglobaloperation.

    thelong-termaimbeingorustomanuacturelocallyandcompetitively,to

    successullymeetthedemandothereplacementandOEmarkets.

    Wealsoneedtoensuretheseproductsarewellreceivedandthattheysellor

    anappropriatepriceinthelocalmarket.ApremiumbrandsuchasContinental

    mustbemarketedandsoldresponsiblyinthemarket,inkeepingwiththequalityimageandreputationthebrandhasestablishedglobally.Wearenot

    abouttostartcompetingwiththecheapestothecheapest.

    Thechallengenowisorustosuccessullyrelaythismessagetoourdistribution

    partners,toinstilnewoundcondenceandprideinourbrand,andtospur

    themontoachievinggrowthandprotabilitytothebenetobothparties

    noeasyeatwhenyouconsiderthatCTSAdoesntowndistributionchannels

    in thiscountry,but relies on loyalty partnerships and key

    accountsoritssurvival.

    Would you say the ContiPartner Programme could

    benet from the addition of more truck tyre oriented

    dealers? It seems to me that a large number of CPs is

    reluctant to dabble in this market segment?

    While I can understand their reluctance to diversiy into

    the truck tyremarket or a number ovalid reasons such

    ascapital/peopleinvestment,creditrisksandsoon,parto

    beingan entrepreneurand thisiswhatourContiPartners

    undoubtedlyareisbeingpreparedtotakecalculatedrisks

    anddevelopingonesmoneycollectionskills.Theseconcerns

    arelegitimate.ThetrucktyremarketinSouthAricaisanimportantoneandwe

    needtobeproactiveinsecuringourrightulshareothissegment.So what strategies are in place for the continuance and enhancement of

    the ContiPartner concept?

    TheContiPartner stores, now146 strong across SouthArica,remain our

    primarydistributionpartners,withaliateddealersstandingtobenetroman

    associationwithCTSAbywayosignage,marketing,advertisingandaboveall,

    accessibilitytoaworld-classproduct.

    During the course o next year,we will be outlining our strategy or the

    ContiPartner loyaltyprogramme,with newinitiatives andsystemsplanned,

    alongsidearepositioningotheContinentalbrandthroughtheFIFAWorldCup

    tournament,aswellasindependentlyoit.

    TheContiPartnerprogrammecanonlygrowandfourishwithcompletebuy-

    inromtheindependentdealerswhorecognisetheneedornewbusiness

    modelsandwayso streamliningtheirbusinessesromIT-basedsolutions

    anduptodatecomputersystems,toregularaudits.

    Themajorityhasheededtheclearcalltomovewiththetimes,inkeepingwith

    currentmarketdynamicsanddemographics,butimplementationwilllikely

    requireagreatdealoeortandnegotiationonbothsides,andmayeven

    seesomealiationsdrawingtoanend.However,ithisiswhatisrequiredto

    preservethelongevityotheContiPartnerbrand,thenwerepreparedorit.

    You spoke of key distribution accounts I assume by these, you mean

    the likes of Tiger Wheel & Tyre, Malas and Kwik-Fit? How would you

    respond to allegations that these groups are meted out preferential

    treatment by CTSA, sometimes at the expense of the ContiPartners?

    AlthoughImarelativenewcomertothismarket,Imawarethatthisperceptionexists.IwillbeginbysayingthatstrengtheningtheContiPartnerprogramme

    remainsintegraltostrengtheningourownbrandpositioninthemarketandas

    such,ourCPscanrelyonusorassistanceasandwhentheyseet.AsIsaid

    earlier,weintendhoningourattentiononourprimarydistributionchannelin

    lightoa2008marketsurveywhichshowedacleardiscrepancybetweenthe

    ContinentalandtheContiPartnerbrands.

    OnthesubjectoTigerWheel&Tyre,bearinmindthatthestructuresand

    operationalsystemsbywhichtheirstoresabide,makeor

    ease o management. We negotiate exclusively at head

    ocelevelonly,whothendisseminateandcommunicatethe

    inormation throughouttheircompany-ownedbranches.In

    contrast,whenitcomestotheCPconcept,wearerequired

    totakeintoaccounttheindividualneedsandrequirements

    o each independentoperator, each owhich run their

    businessesvery dierently to thecompany-owned stores,

    suchasTigerWheel&Tyre.

    AnotherreasonwhyCTSAmaybeperceivedasavouring

    TigerWheel&Tyreisthisretailerscommitmenttomaintaining

    responsiblepricingoourbrandinthemarketplace,astrategy

    whichisclearlyinlinewithours.TheydonotprostitutetheContinentalbrand,

    butrather,positionitasthepremiumbranditis,despiteeconomicpressures

    andsticompetitionromcheapertyres.

    Yes, but what of accusations that TWT stores are advertising Continental

    products for considerably less than what your own CPs can sell them for?

    TWTsalesmenaretrainedtosellupromtheentryleveltyrestoultrahigh

    perormancetyresandperhapsournewrimstoo.Theyselllittimeandthe

    protonamoreexpensivehighperormancetyreplusanewrimtakesupthe

    samelittimewhiletheprotissomuchmore.

    So, in other words youre suggesting that its not so much a case of what

    CTSA is perceived to be doing wrong, but more a case of what groups

    like TWT are doing right?

    Exactly!

    That said,our associationwith other key accounts such as those already

    mentionedwillnevertakeprecedenceoverourownimmediatechainoloyal

    dealersandthisissomethingIwouldreiterate.Yes,theCPcomesrst,but

    Imsurethattheyllagreewithmethatitmakesgoodbusinesssensetonotput

    allyoureggsinonebasket,henceourrelationshipswithotherindependent

    keycustomers.

    What effect has the global recession had on the operation, particularly in

    light of OE performance?

    perormancehasobviouslyslowedbuttheeconomiccrashhascorrectedour

    brandthatisapprovedorOEtmentbyallthevehiclemanuacturersanaccomplishmentwereextremelyproudo.

    The FIFA World Cup will go a long way towards rmly entrenching the

    Continentalbrandon aglobalscale,butitsalsoimportantorusto identiy

    ourselvesoutsideothisworldevent.Wemustmakethebrandevenmore

    visibleandcommunicatethatqualityothisnaturecomesataprice.

    We believe our new brandmessage soon tobe launchedin SA will

    successullypavethewayorusinachievingouraimsinthisdirection.

    What do you view as your biggest challenge in achieving these goals?

    Iwouldsaythesilothinkingthatissometimesprevalentinternallyaswellasexternally.Imnotheretopointngersatanyoneinparticularbutitsvitalthat

    asamanuacturingconcernandasadistributionchain,webeginchallenging

    ourmindsetinordertothinkoutothebox.Breakingdownwallsisnevereasy

    butIwouldliketobelievewevebeguntoopensomedoorsatleast,inthis

    direction.

    Our own people are asking or change which is a positive thing, but

    eectivechangecansometimesrocktheproverbialcomortzonetheynd

    themselvesin.

    How would you sum up your vision for CTSA?

    MyvisionisorContinentaltorankasnumberoneintermsotheoverall

    package,i.e.productquality,service,marketshare,andtoberecognisedasthebenchmarkinthemarketplace.Wemuststrivetoprotectandpreservethe

    imageothebrandatallcosts.

    Will you be running incentive programmes to coincide with the 2010

    FIFA World Cup?

    Wearedenitelyplanningtocapitaliseonourpositionasanocialsponsorby

    wayoincentivetrips,matchticketstoourhospitalitysuiteatSoccerCityetc.

    Finally Dieter, what impression have you formed of the SA market thus far?

    ThisisnotspecictothetyretradebutIhavetosaythatImappalledand

    horriedbythewaySouthAricanmotoristsbehaveontheroads.Wemustall

    worktowardsmakingthedrivingexperienceasaerandmoresecureone,and

    notonlythroughourchoiceotyres,butmostimportantlyperhaps,through

    ourbehaviour!

    tyrepurchasesconstitutingasizeableportiono

    thoseoperatingcosts,weaskedthemhowthey

    believedthetyreindustrywasmeasuringupto

    particularlyinlightothecurrenttradingclimate,whileothersarguethatthe

    sellingpricehaslittleornobearinginthelongrun,especiallyithewhole

    cradle-to-gravepackagereapstherequiredresults.

    SaysFrancoisEhlers,TechnicalDirectoror ImperialLogistics: Whatwere

    ultimatelyconcernedwithisachievingthedesiredcpkwhichiswhyweremain
