Overview

V iscaldi was a small hamlet near the ruined town of Lumbrosco (renamed Mordini) that sat upon the then Mordini-Lucini road. Shortly after the

downfall of the cursed town, the residents hired a small company of soldiers under the command of the eccentric Hermandal Kazrakson to lead their defense. Kazrakson set about fortifying the outlying areas and the key to his defenses was a large stone tower which stood on the outskirts of the town.

As the dwarf finished his preparations, the undead sent a force to reconnoiter the area in force. Incidentally, a

band of greenskins was in the area under the same assignment as they approached from the Badlands.

What was to take place was a short but brutal conflict which left the town’s defenders decimated and a fraction of the skeletal force hanging onto the tower. The  greenskin force remained largely intact, unable to get into the thick of the fray due to their contentious and squabbling nature.

Pavises (by ZeroTwentythree)

W hat follows is a quick little tutorial showing

how I made some extra pavises to roughly match the ones that come with the Besiegers

from the Warhammer Dogs of War range. Most of thismay seem obvious, but I just wanted to show that it’srelatively easy to do.

In Photo 1 we have a hobby knife, small straight edge,a shield of polystyrene “plasticard,” one of the originalcast shields, and one example of the basic form thatI’ve cut out. It may be a bit difficult to see, but all Idid was trace the original onto the card, then cut it

out. I believe the card size I used was .030 mm thick, which is thin enough to be easy to cut on anarc/curve. A new, sharp blade is recommended.

The spaces between the main shield forms were usedfor the reinforcing rib along the center. I trimmedthem down at an angle, as on the original, and left

them longer than the main shield form. In Photo 2

you can see that they overhang a bit at both the topand bottom. I used a liquid, brush-on plastic cementto glue them down.

When they were completely set, I flipped them overand trimmed off the excess rib with a hobby knife.

Photo 3 shows 7 of my scratch build pavises, along with the original, and a plastic pavise from Zvezda’s“Royal Infantry” set. This could be an alternate designbuild the same way, using a bit of plastic tube, woodendowel, or even a twig from the back yard as the stake.

I’ve glued them to bases in Photo 4. The Besiegerspavise gets glued to the figure, but looks a bitawkward. By gluing them to a separate base, thecrossbow figures can be used with or without them.I’ve put some of them on group bases forconvenience.

Photo 5 shows my 7 scratch build pavises, along withthe model from Zvezda, painted up. From the front, they should be virtually indistinguishable from theoriginals.

Photo 6 shows a couple of alternate designs, based onillustrations from WRG’s Armies of the Middle Ages,

Vol. 1, by Ian Heath. They were my first, ultra-simpleflat plastic attempts at cutting my own pavises.

I’ve included photos of both my own pavises, one of the Besiegers, and the one from Zvezda with a few possibilities for crossbowmen suitable for thecampaign.

The Front Rank figure is from their Wars of the Rosesrange, and is close in scale to the GW figures. TheZvezda figure is a multi-piece plastic figure from theirRing of Rule game. It comes from a boxed set of figures with various arms and armour called “Royal

Infantry.” They’re not quite as detailed as GW figures, and a bit leaner. Next to him is a heavily armouredBesieger from GW, with his own (non removable)pavise. He has a prop for the pavise cast across his legs, making separate basing of the pavise impractical. Very nice sculpt, though, and easy to paint with all thatarmour. Between the two GW figures is a Black TreeDesign crossbowman from their Hundred Years Warrange. His appearance is a little earlier in history thanthe rest, but this is a fantasy game after all, and he fits

well with the Bretonnian range. Perhaps he’s amercenary from that land? Nicely sculpted andinexpensive, the only problem is getting Black Tree toship your order (buyer beware.) After that is thearchetypical Tilean, a GW Marksman of Miragliano.Last is a Mirliton (formerly Grenadier) crossbowman.

A little thinner than the GW figures, he still fits (in my opinion) and is cleanly sculpted and easy to paint.

I’ve missed quite a few other brands of figures.Foundry, Old Glory, and Kingmaker come to mind, and may be worth looking into. Good luck!

A tale of two halves:an account of the

adventures of Captain Adalberto(By Finlay)

Captain Adalberto was uneasy. He did not fare well atsea, especially on a voyage as long as this one. A further cause of exacerbation was the required co-operation of a Trantian with Sartosan pirates. Thisarrangement was highly unorthodox and Adalberto

had to use a great deal of self restraint when he was“told” of the operation, although given his recentfailings he had little choice. To make matters worse, he had been forced to use agreat part of his personal wealth, meagre though that

was, to ensure the loyalty of the Trantian troops underhis command while they travelled on the Sartosan

 vessel.

This unpleasant situation had been forced upon himby his uncle, Lord Grimaldi of Trantio, who was

working as part of the Marienburg alliance. Beinglandlocked, Trantio had no ships of its own, and the

rest of the alliance was unwilling to provide any transportation for this risky venture: the end result wasa deal with the Sartosans, weighed heavily against theTrantians. Indeed the returns of their operation wouldbe focused upon increasing the prestige of theGrimaldi Family, and proving a thorn in the side of the Kislevite allies of the Otillian Empire. TheSartosans, on the other hand, would be claiming morethan their fair share of any material spoils.

Captain Adalberto had little say in the matter. Beinga bastard son of a now dead (and infamously successful) Trantian lord, he had long come to rely on

the support, and coffers, of his uncle. Without alegitimate claim, his place in Grimaldi family lent itself strongly upon doing what he was told, especially dueto the recent failures. He had lost almost his entirefighting strength in what should have been a brief skirmish with the Barak Varr dwarves, proving unableto utilise the superior manoeuvrability of his cavalry and light infantry.

Regardless of any past issues, Captain Adalberto wasnow half way to the Sea of Claws, intent upon raidingthe coast surrounding Erengrad. They needed tocause as much devastation as possible, with the aim of drawing the attention of the Kislevites and causing

them to divert a considerable part of their strength todeal with this menace, thus diverting a part of theOtillian’s power and providing a small advantage tothe Marienburgers.

_____________________________________________

The fighting had not been going well. Captain Adalberto’s remarkable inability to utilise the differentstrengths of the troops under his command wasresulting in his strength gradually being whittled away,

while the Kislevites were using little more than theirtown and village garrisons to counter him. In truththis was not totally his fault. The Sartosans wereproving less than willing allies, refusing to utilise thecannon from their ships in any land battles for fear of

weakening their own defensive position, and theirmoral while fighting was so low that the only thing

you could count on them achieving was a tactical withdrawal. Furthermore, after the long journey, thesupplies on board were growing short. Adalberto hadcounted on raiding Kislev stores, but so far he hadbeen able to recover little of use.

He had however come across some valuable

information. The Ogre settlement near Erengrad,Jihlava, was supposedly full of plunder, which he wascertain could be used to sway the Sartosans intoaction. They had been facing Ogres in almost every battle which they had fought since arriving at the coastof the Sea of Claws, with small units of Mercenariesevidently being drawn into many garrisons, with achance to gain experience of combat before beingrecruited into a more orthodox Kislevite force.

Adalberto was sure, after having personally driven hislance deep into the side of one such Ogre merely tosee the Ogre roar with displeasure and cleave his horse

in two with one mighty blow, that if he was able tocause enough devastation and damage to dry up thesupply of Mercenary Ogres for the Kislevites, he

would be providing a much needed respite for theMarienburgers. He also had his own aims for such an action. Havingheard tales of the extraordinary aptitude of Ogres forbodyguard roles, he could not stop imagining his

Uncle’s pleasure when presented with such a gift. Theimpact of being able to take an Ogre bodyguard toTrantian councils would be dramatic indeed._____________________________________________

Adalberto was unsure how to go about this raid, sofor several weeks he kept his idea to himself Heattempted as best he could to draw the Kislev forces tothe sea shore and to maintain a level of suppliesnecessary for his troops. During a particularly successful attack, they had managed to procure a largesupply of strong Kislevite liquor. While not necessarily essential for sustenance, it had provided a muchneeded boost to both the Sartosan’s and his owntroops moral. Adalberto, while not a naturally talentedgeneral, was certainly a quick witted and intelligentman, and to him this liquor represented more than apleasant warming draught, but his one chance to strikeagainst the Ogres. Adalberto started to formulate hisplan, and was quickly left in little doubt that this

would prove to be the crowning glory of his military career, if he was able to accomplish what he planned.Much to the chagrin of his troops, he managed toconvince them to take the liquor and some othersupplies, and to build a makeshift camp near thesettlement. Adalberto was only able to achieve this by revealing his plan to the forces under his command. The Sartosans in particular, when they learned of thepotential gain of an entire settlement worth of Ogreloot, were keen for the plan to go ahead, and

Adalberto found them to be willing and helpfulparticipants of his army.

He placed about half his fighting strength in hidingbehind a thick wooded copse, comprised mainly of theSartosans who he suspected would prove highly skilfulat raiding and sacking Jihlava, and he drew up the restof his troops, on a plain in front of the settlement.Knowing that the Ogres, being generally willing tofight, would engage him almost at once Adalbertoordered his troops to withdraw to their main campalmost as soon as they had started to fight the Ogres.

The trick, and most complex part of his plan, was toengage the Ogre forces enough to lure them intopursuit, without needlessly sacrificing his fightingstrength. Much to his displeasure, a unit of lighthorsemen strayed too near the chieftain of the Ogres, and underestimating his speed, were unable to

withdraw. Slaughtered to a man, this action spurredthe rest of Adalberto’s forces into a quicker retreat,

and acted as bait to the Ogres, who having spilledblood, were eager for more.

The Ogres pursued them vigorously, until they cameupon the makeshift camp. Ogrish lust for battle is

second only to their lust for plunder, and the lure of food and drink proved stronger than their desire topursue the invaders. Adalberto had counted upon thefact that the Ogres would plunder their supplies andtake them back to Jihlava and would then celebratetheir victory with a feast. This became evident whenhe took his own knights and the remaining lightcavalry back to meet the hidden soldiers. Despite theirposition, sounds of revelry could be hear emanatingfrom the Ogre settlement, and so hidden by darknessand by the Ogre’s own shouts, he ordered his soldiersto advance upon Jihlava.

Little known to the Marienburg allies, the stolenliquor was having an even greater effect than they could have wished for. Not only were a large portionof the Ogres now so drunk they could barely stand, content instead to sing and doze in the firelight, oneparticularly large specimen was filled with a sense of self grandeur, and drunken confidence. He hadchallenged the chieftain and their bloody and brutalfight had seen the newcomer skewered like a pig uponthe chieftain’s massive spear. Ordinarily Ogres wereused to these type of leadership challenges, but withOgrish anger fuelled by the liquor, the fighting spread

throughout the settlement like wildfire.

The levels of noise issuing from the settlement were sodeafening that Adalberto was sure that a great deal of disruption had been sown. He ordered his troops toattack, and they quickly broke through the poorly constructed barricades (Ogres generally relying ontheir own strength as defense, and not the strength of

walls), and immediately fell upon the Ogres, overcoming the scattered resistance as they easily slainthose passed out from over indulgence, or woundedfrom their own fight. As the Marienburg troops spreadthrough the settlement, the looting in earnest began.

As Adalberto suspected, the Sartosan’s provedparticularly adept at seizing what was valuable, andthen setting fire to the ramshackle buildings.Soon it seemed to Adalberto that the wholesettlement was raging with flames, and he ordered histroops to withdraw, less they push their luck too far.Confident that a great deal of plunder had been taken, and the settlement almost completely destroyed, his

thoughts once again turned to his idea of an Ogrebodyguard. The first two burnt out houses which heand his knights searched had been empty, but in thethird they found an Ogre the size of an adolescenthuman, lying face down upon the floor with an ugly

wound upon his head. Sure that he must be quite young, and aware of the pressing nature of his search, Adalberto ignored the wound and bid his men to tiethe infant Ogre, and sling him over a horse. With this,

Adalberto led his troops from the settlement and victorious, marched back to the ship.

_____________________________________________

With the liquor and the majority of their othersupplies used in Adalberto’s trap, the Trantian Captain

was unable to persuade either the Sartosans or theTrantians to remain in the Sea of Claws any longer. He passed the blame onto the pirate captain, sure thatLord Grimaldi would wish him to stay, but in truthhe was pleased. His planned attack of the Ogresettlement had worked perfectly, and while the foodand drink were running low, the ships stores were now crammed full of gold coin as well as weapons of allsort. With a light heart Adalberto consented, and thelong journey home was started.

There was only one issue clouding his return, much tohis displeasure, the Ogre which he had taken had stillnot awoken, although he seemed to be improving

every day. The wound to his head had proved to be alot worse than Adalberto had first feared, and theSartosan ship doctor had affixed a metal plate onto itshead to replace part of the shattered skull which hehad removed. Adalberto was unsure how anything, even an Ogre, could survive such procedures, but hehad noticed that the Sartosan doctor had created aTattoo on the Ogres back, which glowed with anunnatural light. Adalberto questioned the doctorabout this tattoo, but suspecting and fearing

witchcraft, and seeing as it seemed to provide theOgre with strength, he did not push his inquiries toofar.

Instead, he focused on his glorious reception when hereturned to Trantio. Not only had he filled the ship

with plunder, he had managed to cause quite adisturbance among the Ogre settlement, and he hadhis chief prize: the gift for his uncle.

Making mounted crossbowmen (by warhammerlord_soth)

How to make cavalry out of Crossbowmen ?

First you’ll need to assemble the necessary components:

A head (I chose a Bretonnian head with the flathelmet)

A missile trooper body (Empire missile troop box.)

Crossbow arms ( Duh..)Mounted legs (Pistolier/outrider legs)

And lastly, and not necessarily : a cape(Pistoliers/outriders)

Step 1 : Remove all bits you don’t need (the legsfrom the missile trooper and the arm on the cape inthis case. To do this, I used a razor saw and a hobby knife. Remember these things are dangerous, andcut away from your body. Also, a dull knife is farmore dangerous than a sharp one : it will make youslip and hurt yourself.

Step 2 : After cleaning up, you’ll need to assemble theparts. Notice that I didn’t glue the head or cape on.This makes sure I can access all parts of the modeleasily with the paintbrush.

Step 3 : Then, after having basecoated your model,it’s painting time ! Yes, it’s that easy really. From thisstep onwards these guys are just like the models youbought in the shop, with one major difference :They are unique and you created them. For the painting, Iused black basecoat, followed up with earthen tonesfor the horses : Well covering shades of brown. Afterthat, it’s magic bottle time : wash liberally with DevlanMud. When that has dried, paint everything that isnot horse black (again), like the saddle and reins.

While your horse are drying, I bet you want to start work on the riders, so let’s do just that. Again, Istarted off with earthen tones washed with DevlanMud. Then, I put a basecoat of foundation + mediumtone red were needed (cloaks and saddlecloths). The

red will need 2-3 layers to cover.

After that, making use of the products in theback(matte medium, thinner and flow release), I madea dark red wash, which I used on the horses in thepicture. The wash needs to be gloopy-fluid (theconsistency of dishwasher liquid) for best results. Afterthat I painted the leather straps dark red, almost

brown. The horses hooves were painted with deneb stone, and then inked with sepia ink.

After that, I painted everything left to be done black (cleaning up previous steps) and painted everythingin its base colour : natural steel for iron parts, mediumbrown for wood, different browns for other parts,

bronze for decorative metal parts. When dry, all this got a wash with my shading grey  wash (same formula as red wash, but without thinner, since the shading grey I use is an airbrush colour,

which I apply by brush) Some highlighting and this isthe result :

Only thing left is basing... Have fun building these !

Early in the war that ravaged Tilea, after the sack

of Marienburg, the Pirate king of Sartosa had

dispatched one of his trusted lieutenants, the

wizard lord Casper, to the west of Tilea. He was to hire

an army and control the usually unprofitable area of

the border to the Princedoms. This area had new

potential as a gateway for mercenary companies coming

from the Empire to earn their coin in the wars.

As such Casper was tasked with exacting a toll on these

armies while they were weary from the long, hostile

march to the region and less potent. A ‘reasonable’

tariff was set, and merchants also brought in to supply

the armies, once the toll was paid — and to take a bitmore of their money.

One of the first forces moving into this area was sent

by the Otillian Emperor of Talabecland. Not

expecting a toll and unprepared to pay one, the

general of this army tried to force the toll road and

push through to Tilea to re-supply.

Casper was ready for this, and had his mercenary army

drawn up to resist the arrogance of the Talabec noble.

Thus one of the first battles of the war occurred: the

Battle of the Unpaid Toll.

With little shooting left and no magic it was combattime. The EC, ASB and other knights managed to kill6 of the heavy cavalry and with only 1 KoWW killed

in return they break and escape, the EC elects to notpursue and the KoWW follow up and engage the HA.

Turn 4Casper: The heavy cavalry flees off the board afterfailing to rally. The centre continues its advance andthe pikes turn to face the 2 units of cavalry that haveover run the right. In the magic phase Casper continues his magic assaultand spirit of the forges the EC’s unit again. The hitsare distributed and afterward only the EC with 2

The KoWW enter the field and goafter the rangers. The ogres destroy the brigands but leave themselvesopen to be charged by the marauders with GW.

Turn 5Casper: the marauders all charge, the GW armed into

the ogres and the main unit into the halberdiers withthe bowmen protecting their flank by charging the FCdetachment. Casper flies over to deal with the KoWW.In the magic phase the KoWW as blasted fromexistence by another spirit of the forge. The combats all go in the marauders favour with theogres all killed, you have got to love 12 WS4 S5attacks. They overrun into the halberdiers behind. Themain marauders make short work of the halberdiersand even the bowmen mange not to run from the FCthough lose the combat.Talabecs: With little left unengaged we move to thecombat phase. The FC beat the bowmen and chase

them down. However the GW marauders dish outsome more hurt and kill the entire fighting rank and

WP in the unit, breaking them and running themdown! At this point the Talabecs called it a day as thesole model on the right flank was the EC and he wasin line for some serious magic in turn 6 so with a muchlower toll to pay now most of his army was dead, hepaid up and went on his way.

Massacre to Casper’s Mercenaries.

Casper had to be man of the match dispatching bothIC knight units with the spirit of the forge spell

followed by the GW armed marauders who killed theogres and an entire halberdier unit in combat over asingle turn.
