Nusa Penida is an island southeast ofIndonesia’s island Bali. There are someneighbouring islands near to Bali. Thereare 3 most famous located away fromBali to the south-east known as NusaPenida Island, Nusa Ceningan Island andNusa Lembongan Island.

Each of these Islands shares their own unique tourism destination and arts. For many peoples, these three Islands might not be recognized as parts of Bali’s dis-trict. Somehow, they give a great contri-bution to the tourism development in Bali area. Among these three islands, Nusa Penida Island is the largest one, and also well known as the best destination for scuba diving.

Although the two others islands, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan is lo-cated separated, they’re still administra-tively belong to the Nusa Penida area. Administratively, the islands is a district of Klungkung regency. The Badung Strait separates the islands and Bali.

In this archipelago, specially Nusa Penida Is-land, you will find beautiful pure tropical beach-es and some conservation places protecting plants, Jalak Bali birds sanctuary , and also tur-tle. When you are diving in Nusa Penida Island, you will likely to see the large pelagic, such as Manta Ray’s at some locations and Mola Mola (Oceanic Sunfish). If you get lucky, you will sometimes see the whale-shark too.

The following brief explanation of three main Balinese Dances should help to understand the meaning of Legong, Barong, and Kecak Dances.

Balinese Dancean important part of the culture

Legong DanceTheir dance education can start as early as four years old while the body is still very flexible. For some special temple ceremonies, that occur only every thirty to fifty years, only young girls or boys that have not yet reached puberty can perform a special dance for the Gods. The Balinese believe that before puberty, it is easier for these young innocent boys and girls to enter a trance.

Performances in restaurants are for entertainment only and can be performed by dancers of all ages.

The Legong Dance is the most feminine dance on Bali and can contain different stories. Eighteen different kinds of Legong Dances have developed and depending on the story the dancers tell, 2-5 girls may perform at the same time.

In the most popular form of Legong, knows as Legong Kraton, three female dancers perform together. Every dance has several things in common; the intricately made and decorated costumes, the headdress with frangipani flowers, and the dancers wear beautiful elaborate makeup. Dancers are accompanied by a gamelan orchestra.

Many young girls want to become popular Legong Danc-ers, however only the most talented girls are allowed to perform on stage.

The Kecak Dance, also known as the Ramayana Monkey Chant, is an absolute must see for visitors to Bali. This unique dance is performed by a hundred or more men using their voices as percussive musical instruments. The men sit in a circle just in front of the audience. They sway, stand up, or lie prone as the story develops. The chanting men wear checked cloth around their waists, leave their chests bare, and throw their arms upwards with their fingers outstretched to the skies. This gesture drives out evil. Some of the men become actors in the drama being unfolded by the dancers who enter the stage and depict a battle from the Ramayana.

Kecak Dance

Barong Dance

As the performers chant, dancers stage a battle in which the monkey king, Sugriwa and his army of monkeys help Prince Rama fight the evil King Rahwana. Kecak has its origins in sanghyang, an exorcism dance in which some dancers go into a trance. The Kecak is so popular among tourists that you can find performances almost anywhere on Bali.

One of the best places is at the cliff-top temple of Ulu Watu. However, Kecak can be seen in Ubud, Batubulan, and all over the island. Any place you choose, you are sure to enjoy the drama.

Barong then cast a stronger spell that helped the soldiers’ bodies resist the sharp keris. In the end, Barong’s powers proved to be stronger, thus Rangda ran away. A partici-pant can die or get seriously injured in a Barong dance. It is said that if Rangda’s spell is too strong, a weak sol-dier may not be able to resist it. Even with the help of Barong, he may end up hurting himself with his own keris.The masks of Barong and Rangda are considered sacred items, and before they are brought out, a priest must offer blessings by sprinkling them with holy water taken from Mount Agung. As well as the priest’s blessings, offerings must be presented. Balinese Dances are impressive and were originally not performed to entertain tourists. The meaning is based on beliefs in the Bali Hindu Religion. In these dances you will still find much of Balinese traditions. Even though the performances have changed to entertain tourists, they keep still the original basic meanings.

Barong is probably the most well known Balinese dance. This dance tells the story of the fight between good and evil. The Barong Dance is a good example of the Balinese way of acting out the relationship between mythology and history being blended into one reality.Rangda, the mother of Erlangga, the King of Bali in the tenth century, was condemned by Erlangga’s father because she practiced black magic. After she became a widow, she summoned all the evil spirits in the jungle to punish Erlangga. A fight occurred, but she and her black magic troops were so strong that Erlangga had to ask for the help of Barong. Barong came to help Erlangga’s soldiers. They began to fight. Rangda cast a spell that made Erlangga’s soldiers all want to kill themselves. The soliders then pointed their poisoned keris, a sharpened sword like knife, into their own stomachs and chests.

Nyepi – The Day of SilenceOne of the major ceremonies for the Hindu Balinese is Nyepi, usually falling around the end of March or early April. It celebrates according to the Caka Calendar. The cel-ebrations are great to see, but we cannot related the Day of Silence.

Before we celebration Nyepi, Balinese Hindu community making Ogoh – Ogoh “Buta Kala” Symbol-ic ( monster dolls ) mostly with scary faces, one day before Nyepi, in the af-ternoon, the villagers, all dressed up in tradi-tional garb, gather in the centre of the village combination playing music and offering gifts of food and flower to the ogoh ogoh. Then comes to Pengrupukan action the great processing where the ogoh – ogoh figures are lifted on bamboo poles and car-ried through the streets around the village, to frighten away all the bad evil spirits.

This is followed by prayers and speeches and then, with flaming torches and bon-fires, the Ogoh – Ogoh are burnt, and much revelry ensues. The biggest ngru-puk procession are mostly in Denpasar, Sanur, Kuta, and Jimbaran but any large town will have pretty impressivevparade.

NYEPINew Day Of NyepiThe day of Nyepi itself officially lasts for 24 hour from sunrise, and is one of complete inactivity, so when the evil spirit descend they decide that Bali is uninhabited and leave the island alone for another year. All human activity stops – All shops, bars and restaurants are close, no – one is allowed

to leave their home and foreigners must stay in their hotels, and

even Bali’s International Air-port is closed down. No

fires are permitted and at night all buildings must be blacked out – only emergency services are exempt.

the day before Nyepi.And-some shops remain closed

the day after. For visitors, Nyepi is a day for catching up on sleep,

writing letters or washing.

Most hotels with a restaurant will arrange for simple buffet meals to be served of guests. Otherwise, stocks up on snacks for the day. You could make a side – trip to Lombok or Java, which is predominantly Muslim, and won’t close for the day, but you’d miss out on the festivities prior yo Nyepi. While some may resent this interruption to their travel plans, the Balinese ask that you respect their customs for this short time

Melasti Ceremony is conducted once a year in con-junction with the big Hindu Holiday called Nyepi Day/ silent day. The Melasti event is generally done three-day before Nyepi day or depends to the local custom countryside rule. At the Melasti celebration, all Hindu people in Indonesia especially in Bali troop to carry the holy symbol of Hindu religion to the sea to be cleaned and looked at the alongside road the parade of Umbul-umbul symbol and others. It is also accom-panied by the gamelan traditional enliven this event.

It is a beautiful view in Melasti celebration that you can find in Bali if you pay a visit to Bali Island be-fore the Nyepi Day where entire Hindu people in Bali come trooping to local temple and carry the symbol of the infinite and other Hindu religion to sea. This celebration is very amazing where Hindu people with their typical clothes walk to the sea accompanied by the traditional gamelan the same time bring the pen-non (Umbul-Umbul) and other holy symbols. The road form Denpasar to Ubud can be described very easily with four words, “The Road of Art “.

On the trip from Denpasar to ubud, about 26 kil-meters, you will see a big selection of traditional arts and crafts. Many of the crafts people work outside and invite visitors to watch their sakillful hands as they carefull make beautiful creations. Stonemasons, silversmiths, goldsmiths, puppet-eers, woodcarvers, painters and dancers and dancers can all be seen on this almost magical trip through an artistic dream world.

Batubulan, the vilage of stonemasons, providesan interesting first stop on your trip. Figures carved from stone can be seen averywhere on the road. The stone carvings, all of highest quality, require-nastrong hand to carve images out of a block of stIn Celuk, the work of the goldsmith and silver smiths is outstanding. In some shops, you can watch the designers working on their artistic crea-tions. Many of their ancestors were once commis-sioned to work for Balinese Royalty.

A stop n the art market in Sukawati is a must .Among many other fine arts nd crafts, this art market features a selection of traditional Balinese temple umbrellas known as “Payung”. The mar-ket also has fine hand carved detailed puppets, known as a “Wayang”. The carefully carved de-tailed puppets are made from buffalo leather.Some of the more exclusive puppets are usually owned by the local dalang dalang, or puppet mas-ter master. Sukawati offers a variety of souvenir that make perfect gifts to take home to a friend or of yourself. Next on the road is Mas, the village of woodcarvers. Status of Gods or more playful im-ages of big eyed frogs highly filigree carved doors or just simple window frames are all lined up for the visitors to see. For the master woodcarvers in Mas nothing seems impossible to carve. The villages of Pengosekan dan Peliatan are both nter-esting places to see Bainese paintings.

In Pengosekan, the Community of Young Artists, a group founded in 1969 helps poor families to give their children a good art education. When they become artists, they make money to help their families.

The Place With Highest Temple Density In The World!

Without a doubt, there is no other place in the world with a temple density higher than the one in Bali. Even for Balinese it is partially very hard to fig-ure out the history or meaning of a special temple as we have many myths and stories behind them, from time to time 3 and more.

This has something to do with the fact that differ-ent villages have shared bigger temples and every village has developed over a longer period of time an own story.

As soon as he had started to damage the temple,the King and his soldiers were attacked by thou-sands and thousands of bees and their mission failed. Serious documentations about temples can be found in “Lontars”, which are palm leaf manu-scripts in Asia. The oldest existing ones dateback to 500 BC, the oldest ones in Bali, shown at Lontar Museum Gedong Kirtya, are… years old. Gedong Kirtya is the only museum in the world which shows a Lontar collection. It is interesting to hear that some names are always mentioned inthe Lontars when it comes up to temples.

Regarding to these old manuscripts Dang Hyang Nirarthais one of them. Dang Hyang Nirartha was a chief counselor of a Javanese King. He felt in Love withone of the patrons wife and had to leave Java in 1537.

After arriving in Bali he was the founder of the three temple system in Bali. Every village still follows this philosophy and the temple for Brahma (the god of creation) is facing the mountain, the Vishnu temple (the maintainer and protector) is based in the mid-dle of the village and for Shiva (the destroyer) the temple is facing the ocean.

Also the Lontars tell about Mpu Kuturan, a travel-ling priest. Batukaru Temple, the Shrines at Ulu-watu temple or Bat cave temple are attributed to him. If you are now interest in temples and a Bali Newbi, we highly recommend to see Bratan Teple. It is located on the shores of Bratan lake about 1240 meters above the sea level. Mother Temple, also named Besakih Temple or Pura Besakih Bali, is located in the village of Be-sakih (Rendang Sub-district, Karangasem) right at the foot of Mount Agung, in the eastern part of Bali.

As its name already states, it is the mother of all temples and not just one of Bali’s most impor-tant temples; it is the most important one in Bali! Besakih Temple is located about 1,000 meters above sea level and finally it is the highest sub-stantial public temple complex.

Besakih Temple dates back to about the 10th century (the same age as Tirta Empul Temple) and is actually a complex consisting of about 30 singular temples, with hundreds of shrines, dedi-cated to the helpers of the gods.

When you have finally reached Pura Penataran Agung Besakih, the highest temple of the Mother Temple complex, you will be rewarded with un-imaginable views and a fabulous, spiritual feeling.

Obviously, the most marvellous things in Bali also have a reverse side to the coin. As the Mother Temple is a very popular tourist place, you will be asked for money at every single corner. A guide offers his knowledge here, a seller his products there and obviously you have to pay for the en-trance as well. Additionally you will probably get forced to buy a Sarong for 50 USD which is 3-4 times of the real value.

Before you enter the temple complex, Besakih Temple can easily become annoying, especially if you can’t handle pushy people. As Besakih temple plays such a big role in Balinese tradition and it is a tremendous and imposing complex it is therefore hard to say:

“If you can’t handle these situations, stay away from Pura Besakih and see other major temples on Bali such as Pura Luhur Uluwatu (Uluwatu Tem-ple) or Tirta Empul Temple (Pura Tirta Empul) just to name a few” but unfortunately this is a fact. Al-though for those who don’t mind at all and make this tour to Bali’s holiest temple will explore a terrif-ic complex with stunning views from the top level!

Balangan Beach is located in the Bukit, in the south west of Bali. This place is a real hidden gem and “The Golden Sand Area” is well worth a visit. Situated under a massive cliff, Balangan Beach is not easy to find but precisely for this reason this wonderful beauty offers nearly full privacy. Apart from some surfers who enjoy the fantastic waves in this area you will only meet some other tourists who found this place by coincidence.

A public parking place on top of the cliff is pro-vided and the access to Balangan Beach is very

easy, you just have to handle the stairs down the cliff to the beach. Because of the massive waves, Balangan Beach is not highly recommended for swimming but offers another opportunity which is rare to find somewhere else in Bali, a romantic cliff edge wedding with stunning sunset views!

In case you plan to get married, Balangan Cliff will make the most important day in your life simply unforgettable. Wedding agents in Bali offer cer-emonies in every price class. In case you are travelling with kids it has to be mentioned that the cliff around Uluwatu Temple is partially unsecured. On the way back it is highly recommended to make a stop in Jimbaran Bay for a seafood dinner.

The local warungs (restaurants), nestled in be-tween the area of Four Seasons and Interconti Hotel, offer real value for money. A 1.5 Kilo Red Snapper, coming with rice, soup, vegetables and different sauces only adds up to about 10 USD and it is enough for two.

In addition to this, Jimbaran Bay is a very romantic place and offers a great sunset. Be there at the latest around 6.00 pm.

The Double Edged Keris (sword) of Bali

Every fast developing tourist destination in the world has two sides to its blades.

The first area, and surely the most popular one, is known asa mass tourism place such as Kuta or Seminyak. Everyone who has stayed in Bali will have experienced at least one of these area sand seen the Bali Lifestyle in that region. On the other hand what about the other side of the Keris’s blade? Has everyone that has stayed in Kuta, made a trip to Bali’s northern part to see the National park or have they been to Singaraja, Lovina or Candi Dasa?

In the regency of Karangasem in the north west of Bali, lies Candi Dasa, it’s a great place to stay overnight and the perfect place to start explorations of the many cultural highlights which are nestled around this area. In addition to this, Candi Dasa has some extremely charming restaurants, such as the “Lotus Sea view Restaurant”, which offers a won-derful ocean view and the perfect place to have Din-ner. Close to Candi Dasa, nestled in the hills around this area, you can find Tenganan village.

The traditions and practices of this village may sound very strange to you but isn’t it worth seeing a village where only the inhabitants are allowed to marry each other andvisitors of the village are pro-hibited from staying overnight?

Even if youhave already booked your hotel in Bali, it is worth taking a driver and staying overnight in Candi Dasa, a wonderful place located on the northeast coast of Bali.

Gunung Kawi TempleGunung Kawi Temple (Pura Gunung Kawi) is a very unique Balinese temple complex, carved into the mountain and located on Pakerisan River, close to Tampak Siring village in the regency of Gianyar. Pura Gunung Kawi bears a resemblance to the South American Maya Temples as it is surrounded by a lush green tropical rain forest and situated on a mountain river.

Gitgit Waterfall is located in a plateau, about 300 me-ters above sea level. It is the height of about 40 me-ters, surrounded by tropical trees and a lush green environment. The way to Gitgit Waterfall is paved with lots of stalls and on either side of the path you can find some lush plantations (coffee and cloves). The sellers are not aggressive at all and you can finally enjoy a 15 minute walk without getting hassled by anyone.

Penglipuran Village in the traditional Balinese country-side is located in the Bangli regency, about an hour and 30 minute trip from Kuta. See the original Balinese way of living, visit traditional houses and talk to the locals. To keep this outstanding cultural attraction going, the family agreement is that the oldest family member has to move back to Penglipuran after both parents have passed away. Sukawati Art Market is the biggest local market in Bali to purchase traditional handicrafts and traditional handmade products, spanning over many blocks on the main road of Sukawati. The Trip from Kuta to Sukawati Art Market on average takes one hour.

About a 45 minute trip away from Kuta, in the regency of Tabanan, you are able to find a very interesting but widely ignored attraction; The Subak Museum. Subak stands for a very ingenious water irrigation manage-ment system which was developed in Bali hundreds of years ago but is still in use. Puppies, cats, bats, monkeys and other exotic creatures can be bought too. Warning: Most of the cages are inappropriate for the species.

Seminyak Beach is very well known. It perfectly com-bines relaxation, dining and nightlife. As with plenty of other places located on Bali’s west coast, it is a great spot to see Bali’s wonderful sunsets. Plenty of restau-rants and beach bars in every price category stretch along the area known as ‘double six’. The most popular beach club there is called Cocoon, it’s very well known for its sophisticated parties such as the Splash Party.

It is a myth that religions can’t live in peace and harmo-ny next to each other. See a Protestant and a Catholic Church next to a Buddhist or Hindu temple as well as a Muslim mosque nearby. Some of these prayer houses are open for public for a little donation and if you are in Nusa Dua or Jimbaran you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to see, maybe the only place in the world where religions are ‘that close’ to each other.

Lovina has more or less the same attrac-tions as Singaraja; Dolphin Tours, Snorkel-ling and Diving. Although in addition to these things you can find the trekking to waterfalls, Banjar Hot Springs (Air Panas – Hot Wa-ter), diving or snorkelling around Menjan-gan island, home to the best preserved coral reef in Bali and the Banjar Buddhist tem-ple, the biggest one in Bali close to Lovina. A very moderate nightlife has started to de-velop here, especially on weekends and it’s getting a little bit busier outside of the hotels. Apart from the high Season (around August) Lovina is a very quiet area and action seek-ers, apart from Divers and Surfers who like the ocean calmer, should only come for a day trip to enjoy the black sand beaches. Just two and half hours drive from the hus-tle and bustle of the busy tourist areas in the south, you will enjoy a relaxing Bali holiday.

Candi Dasa is located in the Samuh neigbor-hood of the Bugbug Village, 12 kilometres southwest of Amlapura, the main town and capital of the Karangasem regency, seaside town in eastern Bali that rests on the edge of a fresh water lagoon. It was formerly known as Teluk Kehen (Kehen Bay), but since the tour-ism industry was introduced the name was changed to Candidasa. Only one thing is for sure, Candidasa is a tran-quil coast offering varying accommodation, from basic to five-star resorts and few good restaurants in between.
