Bottom Suitcase

The bottom suitcase consists of a top/lid a box bottom andthe dividing insert pieces.

Bottom: Cut Soft Suede cardstock to 11” x 12”. Score at 2”

on all 4 sides.

Lid: Cut Soft Suede cardstock to 9-1/8” x 8-1/8”. Score at

1/2” on all 4 sides.

Bottom piece - Cut up to the 2 intersecting score lines on 2

Trim the 4 corners off at the diagonal as shown

Add Sticky Strip to the corners and fold it up into a box.

Trimming the corners on the diagonal makes for smooth clean

box corners and eliminates those nasty little edges that sit

above the box sometimes.

Lid piece - Cut up to the 2 intersecting score lines on 2 sides

of the box. Fold on the score lines. Trim the front corners on

the diagonal and cut the back corners off. Add Sticky Strip

to the corners of the front and a long strip to the back piece

as shown.

Tuck in the front corners, seal and fold up the box lid.

Insert the back piece into the box bottom, peel the Sticky

Strip and press together. You can put it on the outside too if

you want, we will be covering it up with DSP later.

Now the bottom suitcase in the trio is made, the rest is

decorating it to look like a real suitcase. I covered mine with

cardstock and DSP, added a decorative trim strip around the

lid, corner decorations, a ribbon handle and straps around the

entire suitcase.

Cut insert/divider pieces for the box from Whisper White

cardstock or whatever color you prefer. This one is 3 pieces

put together like a puzzle to fit in the box.

Large: half of it is for the cards and envelopes and the otherhalf is where the medium insert fits on top. Cardstock is 6” x

10”, score at 4-1/2”, 5-1/2” & 6-1/2”

Medium: for 3x3 post it notes or cards and paper clips.

Cardstock is 3-1/2” x 8”, score at 3-1/2”, 4-1/2” & 5-1/5”

Pencil divider: cardstock is 8” x 3-1/2”, score at 1”, 2” & 3”

Punch four 1-1/4” circles to make the corners of the suitcase.

Method: Fold circle in half one direction to score it, unfold

and fold in half the other direction to score it. Start to foldthe score lines in on each other on one wedge making two pie

shaped pieces in that area as shown in the second circle. Trim

one of those segments out of there and use the remaining

segment to place the adhesive. Tuck that little flap

underneath and seal to create a three sided circle. Set aside.

Cut three strips of Basic Black cardstock for the trim strip on

the lid. One is 1/2” x 8-1/8” and two are 1/2” x 7”. Paper

pierce along one edge and use the Uni-Ball White Gel Pen to

connect the dots and create the look of stitching. Set aside.

Put Sticky Strip on the back of all the pieces and attach to

the suitcase. Add the trim strip last.

Cut 5” of 5/8” Black Grosgrain Ribbon. Fold into shape and

put a mini glue dot to holds the folds in place. Tuck the ends

under so they do not ravel and „seal‟ with a black brad. Attach

handle to suitcase with mini glue dots.

Cut strips of Basic Black cardstock to 1/2” wide. Attach end

to end and fold around the suitcase. Crease on the edges.

When fit, add Sticky Strip and put them on permanently.

Approximately 18-1/2” to 19” are needed.

Peel and stick magnets to the straps. This is how you will open

and close this suitcase.

Here is a photo of the Basic Gray magnets I used but I think

they have new packaging now so it may not look like this.

Middle Suitcase

Box bottom:  Cut a piece of Ruby Red cardstock to 7” x 6” for

the bottom of the box.

Cut two pieces of 12” x 3-1/2”, score at 1/2” along both strips.

You will end up needing about 20“, but assemble the entire

thing for now.

Back piece for the box bottom: 8” x 3-1/2”. Score at 1/2”

on one long side and two short sides.

Box lid: Cut 7-1/8” x 6-1/8” for the lid

Cut two pieces of 12” x 1-1/2”, score both strips at 1/2”. You

will end up needing about 20” of this also, but assemble the

entire length.

Box lid back piece: 8-1/8” x1-1/2”. Score at 1/2” on one long

side and two short sides.

Punch two 1-3/4” circles out of scrap cardstock to use as a

pattern for the corners. Trace with a pencil and hand cut.

Do this for the top and bottom piece, front corners ONLY.

Attach the two lengths of long cardstock for the box

bottom/side with Sticky Strip, overlap by about 1/2”. Cut

1/2” piece out of the under piece so it isn‟t so bulky when

attaching.

Attach Sticky Strip around the box bottom piece in three

separate strips. Lay one down in the front almost corner to

corner. Then place one from the corner to the back of the

box on each side. Mark the middle of the front with a pencil.

Peel the Sticky Strip from the front edge. Fold the long

piece on the score line as you will be attaching the 1/2” edge

to the box. Find the mark you made for the center and line it

up with the center of where you pieced the two pieces

Page 16: Traveling Trio

together. Carefully lay that down all along the front, lining it

up right along the edge. Now the center is attached and you

should have long pieces hanging off each side that are

unattached.-It looks intimidating but it really is pretty straight forward,

 just trust me!

-Try to keep it as straight up and down as possible with little

to no leaning.

-Yes, it will be bulging out and looks like it will never work but

it does!

With your scissors, make about 5-6 little cuts where the

corner starts. Start to fold them in on themselves as you

turn the corner and see how nicely it lines up. You may needto add one or two more cuts but no more. After you size it up

peel the Sticky Strip back and lay the rest of the band/side

in place. Yes, you will have some hanging off, it is way too

long.

Place the hang over pieces in the paper cutter and cut them

off, one side at a time. It kind of squishes the box but it

bounces back. If that makes you nervous, measure them with

a ruler and pencil and hand cut them.

This is what it should look like from the inside now. Are you

there? See that wasn‟t so hard!

Cut off the corner areas, fold on the score lines and apply

Sticky Strip to all three sides.

Peel and stick to the bottom first, then the sides. The box

bottom is finished!!

Middle Suitcase Lid

Mark the center of the front with a pencil. Apply Sticky

Strip in three separate pieces as before. Attach the two long

strips exactly as you did for the bottom. Fold on the score

line and begin attaching, starting in the middle of the front.

Make your little cuts for the corners, fold it around then pull

the Sticky Strip away and attach. You will have long pieceshanging off of this one too. It‟s better to do it this way as I

have no way of controlling how tight you may pull your corners

and I would certainly not want you to end up with a short end

after all that work!!!

This one is shorter so you can put the entire lid in the paper

cutter and cut both ends off.

Fold on the score lines of the back piece, cut off the corners

and apply Sticky Strip to all three edges. This time you are

going to attach it to the outside of the box. Bottom first

then the sides, just like before.

The top of the suitcase has two layering pieces, one of

Chocolate Chip cardstock and one of the dotted DSP from the

pack. Cardstock is 6-3/4” x 5-3/4” and DSP is 6-1/2” x 5-1/2”

Use the same 1-3/4” circles you used for the box to trace on

the corners. Trace both pieces on the front corners only and

hand cut. Tape the layers together and Sticky Strip them to

the top of the suitcase.

Put Sticky Strip on the 1” Double Stitched Chocolate Chip

Grosgrain and place around the edge of the lid. I added a bow

from a separate piece of ribbon and stuck it on with mini glue

dots.

I used Basic Gray magnets on the lid near the back so they

didn‟t stick out.

Darice Craft Design # 9142-21, 1” Brass Latch

I bought this at Craft Warehouse and I‟ve also seen them at

Michaels and Joann‟s craft stores. I paid 99 cents.

Throw away the screws and use gold brads to attach the

pieces. This is for decoration only and serves no function to

the box. In fact, if you open the latch you may tear the

cardstock. It simply is not heavy enough to support it.

After it is attached, push in on the box a bit and it lifts open

easily without using the latch. It just looks like it will do

something but it doesn‟t!!

stick out.

The handle is Chocolate Chip cardstock cut 6-1/4” x 1”. Score

each end at 3/4” and 1-1/2”.

Attach with gold brads

I used one of the cardstock die-cuts in the kit for a label and

backed it on Chocolate Chip cardstock.

Stamp out several flowers to use for the cards on Whisper

White cardstock. I stamped in So Saffron, Ruby Red and Old

Olive. Cut them out and place Stampin‟ Dimensionals on the

backs.

From the cardstock die-cuts in the kit, decide which elements

you want to use on your cards and punch them out of thecardstock sheet. I used the two large ones with scalloped

edges and two with colored edges.

All the cards are basically the same lay-out. I used different

words from Smarty pants on each one and a different ribbon.

If you do not have this kit, cut rectangles to fit the size you

want. Improvise its fun!

Paper Clips: I used Build-A-Brads, 1/2” Circle Punch and

flowers from Little Flowers to create centers for the little

flower die-cuts and attached them to paper clip.
